SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum on June 15th at 6:30 pm as we welcome Katherine N. Banks\, University Archivist & Information Resources Librarian at Milligan University for this month’s History Happy Hour! \n\nMrs. Banks will be presenting on the history of co-education at Milligan University. According to Mrs. Banks\, “Milligan has always permitted men and women to study at the school from its beginning\, which was rather unusual for the late 1800s. My presentation will look at the reasons why Milligan allowed this and what the reality was for the students and faculty in its early years\, through the early 1900s. This presentation was developed from an exhibit and the accompanying research for the Holloway Archives at Milligan University. The title is ‘“No Distinction”’: Coeducation in Milligan’s Early Years\, 1881-1917.” The program will begin at 6:30 pm in the Chester Inn Museum’s Board Room. The program is free and open to the public! \n\nThe 2023 season of History Happy Hour will run from April through November with a new program every third Thursday of the month. The full lineup includes Presidential history\, Jonesborough’s historic front porches\, deed research\, and much more. The full schedule is available on the Chester Inn’s Facebook page and the Heritage Alliance’s website. If you can’t attend History Happy Hour in person\, each program will be livestreamed to the Chester Inn Museum’s Facebook page. \n\nThis project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation\, Tennessee Historical Commission. For more information on the Chester Inn Museum\, History Happy Hour\, or the Heritage Alliance please call our office at 423.753.9580 or the Chester Inn Museum at 423.753.4580.  You can also contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information about the Heritage Alliance and its mission can be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/. SUMMARY:Watauga Valley Railroad Museum Dining Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Watauga Valley Railroad Museum hosts unique dining opportunity on historic railroad dining cars \nThe Watauga Valley Railroad Museum will host a special dining experience on restored vintage railroad dining cars on Friday\, June 23 and Saturday\, June 24 at noon\, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Watauga Valley Historic Railroad yard. \n\nThe nostalgia of a bygone era will be relived in these beautifully decorated railroad dining cars.  The Watauga Valley Railroad Museum will provide a unique opportunity for fine dining and entertainment on the restored Moultrie dining car. The dining car will not move during the dinner. \n  \nThe highlight of the evening will be a dinner followed by storytelling by an authentic Railroad Storyteller. \n\nLunch tickets are $30 per person and dinner tickets are $60 per person. Please specify time and menu option when purchasing tickets. All tickets must be purchased in advance of the event\, and there are no refunds. Diners may choose a table for two or four. Tickets are available by calling the Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423.753.1010 or visiting Jonesborough.com/tickets. \nDue to limited parking at the rail yard\, all patrons for lunch each day will park at the Washington County Library\, located at 200 Sabin Drive in Jonesborough. All patrons for dinner each day will park at the Jonesborough Senior Center\, located at 307 East Main Street\, and will be shuttled a short distance to and from the dining cars at no charge. Map will be sent to you for your assigned parking location. \n\nPlease note that both vintage heritage passenger cars were built before the American with Disabilities Act. Due to their historic significance and age\, they are exempt from ADA Compliance requirements. Please consider suitability when ordering tickets. \n\nThis event is a fundraiser for the Chuckey Depot Museum and the restoration program of Watauga Valley’s historic rail passenger cars. \n\nThe Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum (WVRHS&M)\, the town of Jonesborough\, Tn. and the Heritage Alliance have partnered to preserve the former Southern Railway train depot from Chuckey\, Tn. It was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 for its historic architectural significance. Built by Southern Railway in 1906\, the depot had been privately leased since 1959\, but was situated on land owned by Southern successor Norfolk Southern\, who notified the building’s owners of its plans to demolish the historic structure because the lease had expired. The owners of the building gifted it to the town of Jonesborough\, and it was moved from Chuckey to Jonesborough. It now serves as a museum. Although the railroad is still prominent in Jonesborough\, the town’s depot was razed in the 1970s. \n  \n### \nAbout the Chuckey Depot Museum: The mission of the Chuckey Depot Museum focuses on regional railroads in its exhibits\, like the Southern\, Clinchfield\, and East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. This exhibit gives the Museum a chance to showcase items that come from all over the country\, including a map of railroads in Ohio and a stock certificate for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. The Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, Tennessee\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. The Chuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 South 2nd Avenue. For more information\, please call 423.753.1010. The Depot’s regular hours are Thursday-Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society. \n\nAbout the Town of Jonesborough: A unique 18th century town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee\, Jonesborough’s natural beauty\, charming architecture\, and storytelling heritage have attracted visitors worldwide. Stay a day\, a week or forever\, and create your own stories in beautiful Historic Jonesborough. Visit www.jonesborough.com for more information.
