SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Stories 'n More
DESCRIPTION:If you’re looking for the heart of storytelling in the town that basically invented the modern revival of the art\, Stories ‘n More is where the magic happens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild\, this weekly event is a staple of Tuesday nights in Tennessee’s oldest town. It’s less of a formal performance and more of a warm\, communal gathering where the oral tradition truly breathes. \n\n\nThe Atmosphere\nThe vibe is intimate and authentic. Held at the International Storytelling Center (or occasionally nearby local venues like the  McKinney Center)\, the evening feels like sitting in a very large\, very talented living room. \nWhat to Expect\n\n\nDiverse Tellers: You’ll hear from seasoned professionals who have graced national stages\, alongside guild members honing new material. \n\n\nThe “More” in the Name: While the focus is on spoken-word stories\, you’ll often find the night peppered with poetry\, acoustic music\, or personal tall tales. \n\n\nA Living Art: Unlike a recorded podcast\, these stories change based on the energy of the room. It’s interactive\, raw\, and deeply human. \n\n\nThe Details\n\n\nWhen: Every Tuesday night. \n\n\nTime: Usually kicks off at 7:00 PM. \n\n\nLocation: International Storytelling Center\, Jonesborough\, TN. \n\n\nCost: Generally\, a small donation is suggested at the door to support the Guild’s mission. \n\n\n\n\nPro Tip: Jonesborough takes its storytelling seriously\, but the Guild keeps it accessible. Whether you’re a local or just passing through\, it’s one of the most “authentic” Appalachian experiences you can find without needing to hike a trail.

SUMMARY:Nancy\, an original\, award-winning historical play
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge Builders of Kingsport\, in partnership with the Heritage Alliance\, will present Nancy\, an original\, award-winning historical play by Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, on Thursday\, February 26\, at 6:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Church\, 301 Carver Street\, Kingsport. A panel discussion will follow the performance. \n  \nNancy explores the untold story of an enslaved woman owned by abolitionist Elihu Embree\, founder of The Emancipator\, the nation’s first newspaper devoted solely to ending slavery. While Embree’s life is well documented\, the play asks audiences to consider Nancy’s thoughts\, emotions\, and fate during a pivotal year in her life. Set between January 1820\, when Embree wrote his will\, and January 1821\, when it was read before the Washington County Court\, the play draws heavily from documents housed in the Washington County Archives. Embree attempted to free Nancy and her five children in his will—but whether those wishes were honored remains uncertain. \n  \nThe role of Nancy will be performed by Taleah D. Rogers\, M.Ed.\, a Johnson City native\, Science Hill High School graduate\, and 25-year veteran educator. Rogers is active in numerous community organizations and previously appeared in the McKinney Center’s 2023 production of Crowns. \n  \nWritten specifically for the Heritage Alliance\, Nancy has received an Award of Excellence from the Tennessee Association of Museums and an Award for History in the Media from the East Tennessee Historical Society \n  \nDonations from this performance will support the history education and preservation missions of the Heritage Alliance of Kingsport and Jonesborough. \n  \nFor more information about the Heritage Alliance\, visit www.heritageall.org. \n  \n#### \n  \nAbout the Heritage Alliance: The Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. SUMMARY:The First and Last Town in Tennessee
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center will debut a new play in February that is 250 years in the making. The First and Last Town in Tennessee shares stories from Jonesborough’s past and present to commemorate America’s Semiquincentennial. Written by Program Manager Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, the play takes the audience on a journey from 1779\, the year of Jonesborough’s founding\, to present day. \n  \n“The title of the play is a combination of a nod to the Oldest Town in Tennessee as well as a report from 1801 that referred to Jonesborough as\, ‘the last town in Tennessee\,’” Mason explains. “For a moment\, Jonesborough was the edge of the Western frontier. We have such a rich history right here with amazing stories that are a part of the American dream and experience\, and we wanted to combine all that into this production. Where else do you get a chance to include stories about Governor John Sevier and President Andrew Jackson alongside Alfred Greenlee\, who was known as a friend to all\, Beverly Jenkins of Main Street Café & Catering\, and Jimmy Neil Smith\, the founder of the National Storytelling Festival. All the major American events\, the Revolutionary War\, the Civil War\, the Civil Rights Movement\, and so on\, each of these played out on the local level\, and this play will capture that.” \n  \nThe show includes a large cast of multiple ages. Characters in the play include the Shanks Oak (Jonesborough’s Heritage Tree)\, Julia Bullard Nelson (teacher at the Warner Institute and a suffragette)\, longtime resident Jimmy Rhein\, Marat Moore (journalist/miner/advocate)\, David Deaderick (Jonesborough’s first merchant)\, Jesse Walton (Revolutionary War soldier)\, Ella Russell (only hospital trained nurse in town in the early 1900s)\, Elihu Embree (editor and publisher of The Emancipator)\, and so many more. The play will include music and dancing and will be an experience for the whole family. The play will serve as the kick-off to the 250th celebration in Jonesborough. \n  \n“Want to feel connected to your community\, country\, and past? You’ll want to come and see this play. It’s the perfect opportunity to commemorate and think about where we’ve come from and what we’ve overcome as a country\, and to look ahead to the next 250 years. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you won’t want to miss\,” Mason assures. \n  \nThe First and Last Town in Tennessee will run February 27\, 28\, and March 1. There will also be a second weekend of shows on March 6\, 7\, and 8. Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $20.00 for general admission and $18.00 for seniors 55 and over\, as well as groups of 8 or more. The matinee on March 1 is a special\, “Pay What You Can” performance with a $2.50 suggested donation. Seats must be reserved for all performances\, including the “Pay What You Can” performance. Tickets can be purchased at Jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitors Center at 423.753.1010. \n  \nThis project is supported in part by the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. \n  \n##### \n  \nAbout the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington: The mission of the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington is to provide a comprehensive program through Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts\, which teaches various art skills to all participants through a quality program of instruction open to all segments of Jonesborough’s population. SUMMARY:Tab Benoit with Paul Thorn
DESCRIPTION:Paramount Bristol Presents\n\n\n\nTab Benoit with Paul Thorn\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSun\, March 1\, 2026\n\n\nDoors: 6:30 pm / Show: 7:30 pm\n\n\n$34.53 – $91.50 (prices include all applicable fees and taxes) / Members save at least $5 per ticket\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\nTAB BENOIT \nTab Benoit is a 4x Grammy nominated singer\, songwriter and guitarist who has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues\, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way\, as well as 5 Blues Music Awards\, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. \nPAUL THORN \nWhen it comes to songwriting\, less is more\, and simplicity is strength. Just ask Paul Thorn\, who’s spent three decades turning soulful grooves and small syllables into songs that pack a big wallop. Maybe he learned the power of minimalism from his years as a pro boxer; maybe it just comes naturally. But whether he’s targeting heads\, hearts\, hips or the occasional funny bone\, he somehow manages to condense large nuggets of wisdom into tight little mantras\, the kind embroiderers stitched onto pillows before internet memes existed. \nOur Box Office opens 2 hours before showtime. For shows not already sold out\, tickets will be available at the door on the day of show for an additional cost of $5 (+tax and service fee). BUYER BEWARE! Third party tickets (StubHub\, eTix\, VividSeats\, etc.) will NOT be honored. Tickets are available via paramountbristol.org or our Box Office ONLY.  All sales are final.
