DESCRIPTION:Monday\, April 9\, 7 p.m.\nVoices from Chernobyl\, documentary film\nBall Hall Auditorium\nA film adaptation of Svetlana Alexievich’s book of the same title\, Voices from Chernobyl reveals the stories of the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster from the perspective of the people affected by it – from innocent citizens to firefighters. Alexievich’s 1997 book won the Nobel Prize. The remnants of the catastrophe are seen in the abandoned\, dystopian landscapes that now mark the Ukrainian city of Pripyat\, near where the reactor was located\, and are heard through the words of survivors recalling the short- and long-term horrors of nuclear meltdown. Voices of Chernobyl is part of ETSU’s Earth Month festivities.

SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Association: Author and Historian Michael Shaffer
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Virginia – Author and historian Michael Shaffer will present a program for the Bristol Historical Association on Monday\, April 9 at the Bristol Train Station on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Shaffer’s presentation is entitled “Bristol’s Gray Ghost: Colonel John S. Mosby”.   The meeting will begin at 6:30pm and is open to the public. \n\nShaffer is a Civil War historian\, author\, instructor\, and frequent lecturer.  A member of the Society of Civil War Historians\, Historians of the Civil War Western Theater\, and Georgia Association of Historians\, he serves as a Civil War consultant for the River Line Historic Area.  He is a native of Bristol and holds BA and MA degrees\, with honors\, in Military History – Civil War Studies from American Military University.  Shaffer is currently teaching a series on this topic at Kennesaw State University. \n\nIt is Shaffer’s contention that during the American Civil War\, “perhaps no other soldier approached the actions of Colonel John Singleton Mosby. The daring partisan ranger led his small body of troops on several raids\, capturing Federal troops\, destroying supplies\, and drawing the attending of Northern soldiers needed elsewhere.” \n\nMosby is of immense interest of Civil War historians. Before the onset of the war\, Mosby was a resident of Goodson\, now Bristol Virginia\, and operated a law office on Main Street. He drew acclaim in the South during the war\, and drew ire following the war with his support of President U.S. Grant. He also served as the American consul to Hong Kong and in the U.S. Department of Justice. \n\nThe April 9th meeting is in partnership with the Bristol Train Station Foundation and the Bristol YWCA.  The program is free to the general public. Come hear these stories and more at a performance hosted by the Heritage Alliance on Sunday\, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. inside the Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum. \n\nThis Readers’ Theatre piece will share firsthand accounts of the lives of Washington County citizens during World War One. “While doing the research for this piece\, I was struck by the similarities between now and then\, even though a century has passed\,” shares Special Projects Coordinator Anne Mason. “It was a time of suspicion in America\, where neighbors spied on one another and turned each other in for un-American activities. World War One was a devastating war overseas\, and its chaos was definitely felt across the Atlantic.” Join the Heritage Alliance on April 8\, and hear the struggles from overseas and on the home front as century old newspaper headlines come to life. DESCRIPTION:Carter Mansion Celebration\n \nSaturday\, April 7 & Sunday\, April 8\n \n \nHave you ever wondered what it would be like to travel back in time? You can do just that during the Carter Mansion Celebration. Step back to the 1780s\, when the Revolutionary War was raging in the colonies and hardy frontiersmen had crossed the mountains in defiance of British law to carve out homes in the wilderness.  One such man was John Carter\, a wealthy trader who built his beautiful house along the banks of the Watauga River. Known as Carter’s Mansion\, the elegant frame house stood in stark contrast to the log homes used by the settlers of the region. This event will celebrate that historic home and the early settlers that gave us our rich heritage and history.\n \nVisitors will have opportunities to take a guided tour of the mansion built ca. 1775-1780. Known as the oldest frame house in Tennessee\, the Historic John and Landon Carter Mansion boasts beautiful over mantle murals\, hand carved moldings and raised panels making it one of the most treasured sites in Tennessee history. The house is the only surviving link to the famed Watauga Association\, the democratic government set up by the early settlers in the Watauga Valley. The home’s builder\, John Carter\, served as a chairman of the Association.\n \nGuests can also enjoy visiting the camps of The Washington County NC Militia\, Sycamore Shoals’ host living history organization. There the militia members will be presenting demonstrations of the daily lives of 18th century backwoods settlers. These skills and trades will include weaving\, knitting\, sewing\, 18th century woodworking\, rope making\, natural dyeing\, flint knapping\, butter churning\, medicinal plants\, and much more. Also enjoy colonial games\, militia drill and training\, musket and rifle demonstrations\, and 18th century military music by the Watauga Valley Fifes & Drums.\n \nA highlight of the weekend will be the re-creation of a small skirmish between Patriot militia and British loyalists\, known as Tories. The Plot Against John Carter is a dramatic representation of actual events that occurred at the Mansion in the summer of 1781. The battle re-enactment will be presented Saturday at 1:00 pm and Sunday at 1:30 pm.\n \nExperience the life of early settlers\, smell the campfire smoke\, hear the rattle of muskets\, and see the 18th century come to life at the Carter Mansion Celebration. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, April 6 at 7pm in the museum’s Performance Theater for “Strong Mountain Women: How Ballads Power People – Songs and Stories from the Appalachian Collections of Cecil Sharp\, Maud Karpeles\, and Olive Dame Campbell.”\nFrom 1916 to 1918\, English ballad collector Cecil Sharp traveled the Appalachian region to document variants of ballad songs and photographed some of the singers who shared their music. The special exhibit – The Appalachian Photographs of Cecil Sharp\, 1916 to 1918 – highlights 26 rare photographs that offer a stunning window into the lives of Appalachian people of the period.  This exhibit will be on display at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum from March 17 to May 31\, 2018.\nThis related program will feature a talk by Donald Hughes\, exhibit curator\, and a performance by eighth-generation North Carolina ballad singer and storyteller Donna Ray Norton.
