SUMMARY:Balsam Range
DESCRIPTION:Orchestra: $25 | Mezzanine: $20 | Balcony: $15 \nBalsam Range is a group of five outstanding acoustic musicians and singers from western North Carolina. For their band name\,  they thoughtfully and respectfully adopted the name of a majestic range of mountains that surround part of their home county of Haywood\, NC where the Great Smoky Mountains meet the Blue Ridge\, the Great Balsam Range. \nThe group’s ascent to the top of the Bluegrass world has left a well-marked trail of success since the band’s inception in 2007. One of the genre’s most award-winning artists in recent years\, they have garnered 10 International Bluegrass Music Association awards on the heels of six critically acclaimed albums. Balsam Range has left audiences spellbound while headlining major festivals from coast to coast\, selling out venues across the nation and appearing multiple times at the Grand Ole Opry. \nElements of jazz\, country\, gospel\, swing\, and old-time music are all infused into the fresh sound of this unique Southern band. It’s five distinct personalities creating one remarkable musical experience.\n \nPapertown from Mark Skoultchi on Vimeo.

SUMMARY:Bristol: Reading Appalachia: Voices from Children's Literature" Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Birthplace of Country Music Museum will hold the opening reception for the new special exhibit “Reading Appalachia: Voices From Children’s Literature” on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in the Special Exhibits Gallery at the museum. \nWalk through the pages of your favorite storybook in Reading Appalachia: Voices from Children’s Literature\, a groundbreaking exhibit on Appalachian children’s books and stories. \nSporting life-size characters from Appalachian children’s books\, this exhibit looks at the seminal titles from the late 1800s through the modern story of Appalachia – you’ll feel like you’re walking through the pages of a storybook. Children can stand eye-to-eye with characters from Journey Cake Ho\, A Mountain Rose\, When Otter Tricked the Rabbit\, When I Was Young\, and others. \nThe exhibit also includes representative clothes and toys from Appalachia\, music\, and hands-on activities that bring the subject to life for kids of all ages. Children are encouraged to try on masks of storybook characters and find themselves in a story. They can create their own story of childhood set in Appalachia and hear the voice of old-time storyteller Ray Hicks along with some of their favorite authors and illustrators. Each panel includes an interpretation of the text from a child’s perspective. \nAll are invited to walk into the pages of a story of childhood in Appalachia! \nReading Appalachia was organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society and the Knox County Public Library; it is made possible through the generous support of Clayton Homes\, the Jane L. Pettway Foundation\, Friends of the Knox County Public Library\, and the University of Tennessee’s Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature. \nThe exhibit will be on display in the museum’s Special Exhibits Gallery from February 1 to June 30\, 2019. It will be complemented by a variety of engaging public programs and can serve as a wonderful educational resource for school groups and educators.

SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Yarn Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Yarn Exchange Kicks-Off Eighth Season with Tales of Childhood \n\nThe Yarn Exchange Radio Show is set to return to the stage and the airwaves in January to kick off their eighth season of stories and music. The Jonesborough Story Initiative’s original storytelling radio show brings to life the true (mostly) tales of the region’s most interesting characters in an old-style radio show format that is a great occasion for audiences of all ages. To kick off the new season\, the cast is bringing “Tales of Childhood” to the stage- filled with misadventures\, teenage antics\, and even grown-ups who remain children at heart. Stories hearken back to the days when news of antics at school reached home before you did\, and where praise (or punishment) was ready to greet you at the door. Stories include the Overbay identical twins pulling the big switch in school (and on dates!)\, sibling rivalries\, and practical jokes. \n\nAudience musical favorites Freddie Vanderford and Brandon Turner\, bringing their Piedmont Blues music from Buffalo\, South Carolina\, will once again kick-off the new year. Vanderford has been inducted into the South Carolina Folk Music Hall of Fame for his unique style of playing blues harp and harmonica. He studied under famous blues musician Sam “Peg Leg” Jackson\, and from there\, created a style all his own. Brandon Turner\, with his rich resonate voice and artful guitar playing regularly astounds audiences with his renditions of Deep Ellum Blues and other classics. \n\nThe radio show is performed live at the International Storytelling Center on January 28th at 7:00 p.m.\, and performs monthly throughout the year. Tickets are $5. Season Passes are available now\, too\, and ensures a seat all year long at the often sold-out productions. Season passes are $55. All tickets may be purchased online at Jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitor Center at 423-753-1010. The performances are aired on the last Wednesday of the month at 8PM on WETS 89.5 FM and streams online at the same time at wets.org/listen. The radio show is funded in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:January Jams: Dustbowl Revival
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 26th\n\n\nDustbowl Revival\n\n\nDustbowl Revival is an Americana Soul band with eight full-time members who mash the sounds of New Orleans funk\, bluegrass\, soul\, pre-war blues\, and roots music\,into a genre-hopping\, time-bending dance party that coaxes new fire out of familiar coal. Dustbowl is touring behind their self-titled\, fourth studio album which spent three weeks on Billboard charts\, hit #1 on Amazon Americana-Alt-Country\, #2 on Amazon Folk\, and spent 16 weeks on the Americana radio chart peaking in the Top 20. The band was founded in 2008 in the bohemian enclave of Venice Beach\, California. Over the last five years Dustbowl has become known for their free-flowing and joyous live shows\, combining their funk rhythm and brass section with a fast-picking string band section -opening for bands as diverse as Lake Street Dive\,Trombone Shorty and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, touring China as a guest of the state department and headlining festivals like Delfest\, Floydfest\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, and recently Bergenfest(Norway) and Tonder Festival(Denmark). The band received a big wave of attention with their music  video that featured famous actor Dick Van Dyke for “Never Had to Go”\, which garnered over 10 million cumulative views. That video is now airing in an HBO Doc titled “If You’re Not in the Obit\, Eat Breakfast” starring Jerry Seinfeld\, Mel Brooks\, and Dick Van Dyke. While the band has been known for their old-time and bluegrass roots\, they have departed from those styles and evolved more into modern soul music. Now\, with Producer Grammy Award-winning Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show\, Gaslight Anthem\, Dropkick Murphys) who collaborated on the recent album. \n Dustbowl Revival brings it on\, in the good company of neo-Soul contemporaries such as Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and St.Paul & The Broken Bones. The album delivers eleven hot tracks\, dominated by love-triangle funk & soul\, tenderized with a nod to the unlikely possibility of true love –i.e. “Honey I Love You”\, with Grammy Award-winning blues artist Keb’ Mo’ sitting in.This exhilarating new sound jumps out on the album’s opening tracks\, “Call My Name” and “If You Could See Me Now.” Drummer Joshlyn Heffernan and bassist James Klopfleisch lay down a righteous groove that trumpeter Matt Rubin and trombonist Ulf Bjorlin supercharge with their big blasts of horns. This Stax-style soul builds to a pair of showstoppers: “Good Egg” and “The Story.” The former is a dynamic number that showcases Liz Beebe’s sexy\, full-throttled vocals as well as Bjorlin’s dirty trombone solo. On “The Story\,” Beebe teams with band founder Zach Lupetin for an emotionally charged love song that features some infectious interplay between the horn players and the string-men (mandolinist Daniel Mark and fiddler Connor Vance). \nFrom an Outside Lands Music Festival review\, Rob Sheffield\, in Rolling Stone\, hailed them as a great band “whose Americana swing was so fun I went back to see them again the next day.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 26th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats\, St. Paul & The Broken Bones\, \nLake Street Dive \n \nTickets: $25-30 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpening Act: Seth Walker \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Guest: Seth Walker\n\n\nOver the past 10 years\, Seth Walker has become recognized as one of the most revered modern roots artists in the United States; a three dimensional talent comprised by a gift for combining melody and lyric alongside a rich\, Gospel-drenched\, Southern-inflected voice with a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. His latest studio album\, Gotta Get Back\, produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers\, is yet another masterwork that further expands upon this reputation. \n \nIn addition to extensive recording and songwriting pursuits\, Seth is consistently touring and performing at venues and festivals around the world. Along with headline shows\, he’s been invited to open for The Mavericks\, The Wood Brothers\, Raul Malo\, Paul Thorn and Ruthie Foster\, among others. \nSeth Walker is currently splitting his time between New Orleans and New York City after previously residing in Austin and Nashville. He’s used those experiences wisely\, soaking up the sounds and absorbing the musical lineage of these varied places. With a bluesman’s respect for roots and tradition\, coupled with an appreciation for—and successful melding of—contemporary songwriting\, Seth sublimely incorporates a range of styles with warmth and grace. Perhaps Country Standard Time said it best: “If you subscribe to the Big Tent theory of Americana\, then Seth Walker –with his blend of blues\, gospel\, pop\, R&B\, rock\, and a dash country—just might be your poster boy.”

SUMMARY:Greeneville: Folk Soul Revival Concert
DESCRIPTION:DOORS OPEN AT 7:30PM. \nFOLK SOUL REVIVAL STARTS PROMPTLY AT 8:30PM\, BUT WILL PLAY TWO SETS. \nBEER AND CONCESSIONS AVAILABLE WHEN THE DOORS OPEN. \nADVANCED TICKETS ARE $12.00 UP UNTIL 7:00 PM ON JANUARY 25TH. TICKETS SOLD AT THE DOOR WILL BE $15.00. \n  \nA modern band rooted in old-school southern sounds\, Folk Soul Revival whips up its own version of amplified Americana on the band’s self-titled fourth record. \nThe name says it all. Folk Soul Revival\, like the band that created it\, is an album that celebrates the sounds\, stories\, and small-town values of an earlier era\, modernizing their approach with sharp songwriting and electrifying instrumental work. There’s country twang\, bluegrass bounce\, hillbilly hell-raising\, chicken-pickin’ guitar\, and roadhouse roots-rock\, all sandwiched into a tracklist that mixes heartbreak\, honesty\, and humor in equal doses. Recorded in Nashville and road-tested on stages across the country\, this is Folk Soul Revival’s finest work — an album that nods to the glory days of the past while still pushing the band forward. \nFormed in southwestern Virginia in 2008\, Folk Soul Revival has spent a decade growing a wide audience both at home (where they’ve become a regular presence at local institutions like the Carter Family Fold\, FloydFest\, and Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion) and on the road (where they’ve shared shows with Dr. Ralph Stanley\, Old Crow Medicine Show\, Jason Isbell\, Eric Church\, and others). They’re road warriors\, logging roughly 100 performances a year. For Folk Soul Revival\, though\, those tours always lead back to Bristol: the group’s birthplace\, home\, and muse. Many of the life lessons that lurk inside Folk Soul Revival’s 12 tracks can be traced back to that place. \n“These are stories of home\,” says frontman and chief songwriter Daniel Davis\, who shares the band’s lineup with Justin Venable (baritone guitar\, vocals\, occasional songwriting duties)\, Brandon Sturgill (upright bass\, bass guitar)\, Chad Light (guitar\, pedal steel\, banjo)\, and Justin Louthian (drums\, vocals). “We’re all backwoods country people who grew up in this area\,” he adds\, “listening to bluegrass and country. That’s where we come from\, and that’s where this album comes from\, too.” \nWith songs about blue-collar jobs\, long workweeks\, wise-ass bartenders\, messy breakups\, and richly-deserved weekends\, Folk Soul Revival sources its material from the everyday lives of rural Americans. This is biographical music\, and while the stories may be specific to Folk Soul Revival\, they’ll sound familiar to anyone who hails from the country’s forgotten pockets . On songs like “Small Town\,” Davis sings about front porches\, back roads\, and Friday night football games\, sketching a picture that’s quintessentially Southern. In the background\, the rest of the band chimes in with banjo\, slide guitar\, and vocal harmonies. The result is both fresh and familiar — a new take on a classic idea. \nElsewhere\, the guys duet with folksinger Leah Blevins on “Dance with Me\,” wink their way through the double entendres of the country two-step highlight “Horrible Girl\,” ride a rowdy groove with the kickoff track “Other Side\,” pay homage to Little Feat with a cover of “Willin’\,” and even make room for swooning strings and thick harmonies (the latter provided by the McCrary Sisters) on their most layered song to date\, “Broken.” Produced by Grammy Award winner Chad Brown (Ryan Adams\, Hayes Carll\, Patty Griffin) with additional production by Grammy Award winner Barry Bales (a longtime member of Alison Krauss and Union Station\, as well as the producer of Folk Soul Revival’s previous album\, Out of the Box)\, these songs shine a light on the band’s strongest lineup to date.  Crucial to the group’s soaring progress are two new members — Justin Louthian\, a versatile percussionist capable of train beats\, rock patterns\, and everything in between; and Chad Light\, whose electric guitar riffs take center stage on multiple tracks — whose talents help Folk Soul Revival bridge the gap between the organic punch of a string band and the electrified stomp of a country-rock act. \nReleased years after the band’s third release\, Prompting the Dapperness\, rose to Number 12 on iTunes’ country chart and Number 10 on Billboard Magazine’s Heatseekers chart (South Atlantic Division)\, Folk Soul Revival takes the band to new heights\, merging the band’s classic influences and timeless twang with a modern\, musical approach. Bring on the revival.
