SUMMARY:An Evening with Travis Tritt
DESCRIPTION:No sky is bluer\, no air crisper\, no leaf greener than after a storm\, and Travis Tritt is adding a musical addendum to that list with the release of The Calm After …. Part metaphor and surprisingly literal\, the title is reflective of a fresh and focused start for one of the most successful and acclaimed musical creators of his era. The tumult his music has come through to get this point\, however\, is very real.\n“I feel so humbled and blessed to be where I am right now\,” says Travis\, who will release the album on his own Post Oak Records. “My voice has never been stronger\, I’m constantly playing and working to become a better guitar player\, banjo player\, vocalist and songwriter. I am honestly as excited about the creative process and performing now as I was the day I signed my first record deal.”\nThe highly abbreviated Tritt timeline has the young Georgian incorporating lifelong influences in Southern Rock\, blues and gospel into his country during a honky-tonk apprenticeship that led him to Warner Bros. His 1990 debut Country Club and its succession of hits put him in the vanguard of the genre’s early ’90s boom. At the same time\, his conspicuous lack of a cowboy hat and musical aggressiveness set him apart. The next eight albums and scores of hit singles led him to amass more than 25 million in career album sales\, two Grammys\, three CMA Awards and a devoted fan base that filled venues coast-to-coast.

SUMMARY:Hometown Stars: Southwest Virgina's Recording Legacy\, 1923-1943
DESCRIPTION:“Hometown Stars:\nSouthwest Virgina’s Recording Legacy\, 1923-1943”\nFebruary 7 – June 4\, 2017\nBirthplace of Country Music Museum\nThe talents and repertoires of Southwest Virginia musicians proved to be a deep musical well for the nation’s growing recording industry. Few other parts of the country produced so much commercially recorded music in the pre-World War II era. Still\, only a handful of Southwest Virginia performers saw real fame or money. Most were simply hometown stars\, playing music locally and living average lives.\n“Hometown Stars\,” an exhibit produced by the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum\, tells the stories of these artists — including the Powers Family\, Dock Boggs\, Carl Martin\, The Roanoke Jug Band\, and Jack Reedy & His Walker Mountain Stringband — through text\, photographs\, and artifacts.\n“Hometown Stars” will be on display in the Special Exhibits Gallery at the Birthplace of Country Music from February 7\, 2017 through June 4\, 2017. Visitors may also take in “A Place for All People\,” a historic poster exhibit created for the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) at the museum through Feburary 28\, 2017.

SUMMARY:AAME Speaker Series: Banjo Romantika
DESCRIPTION:AAME SPEAKER SERIES: BANJO ROMANTIKA\nFEBRUARY 07\, 2017 | 7 PM\nBIRTHPLACE OF COUNTRY MUSIC MUSEUM\n(423) 573-1927 | MAP | WEBSITE \nThe Arts Alliance Mountain Empire has partnered with the Birthplace of Country Music Museum and the William King Museum of Art to present its 2016-2017 Speaker Series. Five speakers will present six talks around the common theme: “Art in Appalachia\, Appalachia in the World.” A number of events will be held over the course of the series including a film screening of “Banjo Romantika: American Bluegrass Music & The Czech Imagination” at the museum on Tuesday\, February 7 at 7:00 p.m.\nFilmmaker and ETSU professor Shara Lange will lead the discussion of the documentary “Banjo Romantika\,” which broadcast on PBS across 40 states in the country. Czechs first heard bluegrass during World War II when the Armed Forces Network broadcast American music for soldiers. The music represented freedom to dissatisfied Czechs living in a communist state. Inspired by classic American bluegrass sounds\, an assortment of musicians from across the formerly communist Czech Republic have melded the past\, the political\, and the present into a lively musical tradition entirely its own.\nClick here to view the entire listing of AAME’s Speaker Series events.

Quantifying vegetation on Roan Mountain ’s Western Balds over the last 80 years (1936 -2016) * The Appalachian Trail first brought Jamey to Roan\, where he began doing balds restoration in 1992\, botanizing in 1993\, leading Naturalists’ Rally hikes in 1994\, and goat herding in 2008. He has been a botanist since 1992\, the ETSU John C. Work done by Dr. Dalton Milford Brown\, who did the first quantified plant ecology on Roan\, is a special interest of his.\n Cindy Barrett: Range -wide Prevalence and Impacts of the Lily Leaf Spot Disease on Gray ’s Lily with an Assessment of Turk ’s Cap Lily and Michaux ’s Lily as Disease Reservoirs * Cindy received two bachelor ’s degrees from Tusculum College in Biology and Fine Art. She is currently a master’s of Biology candidate at East Tennessee State University. Cindy ’s research focuses on the Lily Leaf Spot Disease and its effects on four regional lily species: Canada lily\, Gray’s lily\, Michaux’s lily and Turk’s Cap lily. Her work will characterize the overall disease burden of the Lily Leaf Spot Disease acting on Gray’s lily throughout its range and investigate whether other Leaf Spot Disease. Cindy ’s study is comprised of studies of each species in the field and experimental inoculations in the lab.\n Dr. Jay Franklin: Late Prehistoric Towns and Cherokee Archaeology in the Upper Reaches of the Tennessee Valley Jay Franklin is a Professor of Archaeology in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology at East Tennessee State University. He is also Curator of Archaeology at the ETSU Natural History Museum in Gray and Curator of the ETSU Valleybrook Archaeological Education and Curation Center. He was awarded his BA\, MA\, and PhD from the University of Tennessee. His research interests include the prehistory of Southern Appalachia\, cave and rock shelter archaeology\, stone tool and pottery technologies\, and French Paleolithic and Medieval archaeology. Dr. Franklin ’s program description A 1958 TVA report held that the upper reaches of the Tennessee Valley along the Holston\, Watauga and Nolichucky rivers were not suitable for permanent Native American villages. However\, archaeological research conducted by East Tennessee State University from 2006 to the present indicates that our region contained dozens of large\, vibrant Native American towns from at least AD 1350 to 1650. Jay will discuss his recent work at several of these sites. His research suggests that the upper reaches of the Tennessee Valley were not marginal hinterlands but rather newly discovered and well -connected cultural centers. It appears that at least some of these communities came into direct contact with early Spanish explorers. 16th century Cherokee house floor\, Nolichucky River\, Washington County\, TN.\nLUNCHTIME PROGRAM  Bob Estep: Flint knapping demonstration Bob has always had a fascination with Stone Age cultures worldwide\, especially the skills they used to live and thrive. One of these skills is flint knapping\, the art of making tools from stone. From this fascination he began flint knapping 24 years ago.

SUMMARY:The Battle of the Lost State of Franklin
DESCRIPTION:Bristol\, Virginia – The Bristol Historical Association will be offering a program led by Judge David Tipton on Monday\, February 13 at 6:30pm at the Bristol Public Library.  The topic of the program is about the most historic series of events in upper East Tennessee\, The Battle of the Lost State of Franklin.  The conflict was between the forces led by Franklinite Governor John Sevier and the authorities of the State of North Carolina led by Colonel John Tipton.\n \nIn 1784\, four counties in western North Carolina declared their independence as the State of Franklin. These counties today would include Sullivan\, Washington\, Hawkins and Greene\, Tennessee.  Earlier the state of North Carolina had ceded its western land to the United States Congress but North Carolina retracted its cession with concern that it would be sold to Spain or France to pay off the government’s war debt.  Simultaneously\, representatives from these four counties petitioned for statehood as “Frankland” to the United States Congress.\n \nThe conflict ensued between the authorities of the State of North Carolina and the independent state of Franklin.  As a result\, North Carolina retracted its cession and began to organize an administration for the territory.  A simple majority of states favored acceptance of the petition in Congress\, but it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass\, even after the counties’ changed their proposed name to “Franklin” in an attempt to curry Benjamin Franklin’s and others’ favor.  The state effort lasted for four years\, between 1784 and 1788\, when Franklin rejoined North Carolina to protect the settlements from Indian attacks.\n \nDavid Tipton was an attorney and partner with the law firm of Tipton & Jones and in 2013 was appointed as Municipal Judge for the City of Bristol\, Tennessee. In 2014 he was appointed by Sullivan County Commission to serve as General Sessions Judge to fill the unexpired term of Judge William A. Watson\, a position he was later elected for an eight-year term.  He is a member of Tennessee Bar Association and involved with numerous community organizations\, including as trustee and past President of the Rocky Mount Historical Association and member of the Tipton-Haynes Historical Association\, Tennessee Historical Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.\n \nThe February 13th meeting is in partnership with the Bristol Public Library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”. The program is open to the general public to attend. Contact Tim Buchanan\, President\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, by e-mail; buchanan03@bvu.net.  Visit our Facebook page for details\, BRISTOL HISTORY.

The reception begins at 6 p.m. and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. The event includes dinner and a performance of the Pioneer Jazz Band\, along with special guests.\n \nThe Valentine’s Day event is a fundraiser to raise money for much-needed equipment for the entire Tusculum band program\, according to David A. Price\, director of music at Tusculum College.\n \n“This will be our fourth year for this event and it has proven to be a popular and enjoyable way to celebrate Valentine’s Day\,” said Price. “Each year we have had tremendous feedback on the quality of the food\, as well as the fun of dancing the night away to the sounds of jazz standards.”\n \nTicket prices for the event are $55 per person or $400 for a table of eight guests. Both ticket and table purchases provide dance tickets\, free dance lessons\, an opening reception\, dinner and a special dessert. Please call in advance to request a vegetarian substitution. The Pep Band quickly became a much-enjoyed feature of the 2010 Pioneer football and basketball seasons as it performed at the Pioneer Club tailgate parties before each home football game and during pregame and half-time festivities.\n \nSince that auspicious beginning a concert band\, jazz band\, marching band\, handbell choir and several small ensembles have been added to the college’s original band program. These groups perform on campus several times each year in addition to the community events at which they perform.\n \nTusculum College\, the first college in Tennessee and the 28th oldest in the nation\, is a liberal arts institution committed to providing a liberal arts education in a Judeo-Christian and civic arts environment\, with pathways for career preparation\, personal development and civic engagement. Approximately eighteen hundred students are enrolled on the main campus in Greeneville and two off-site locations in East Tennessee. The academic programs for both traditional-aged students and working adults served through the Graduate and Professional Studies program are delivered using focused calendars.
