SUMMARY:Exchange Place: Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Exchange Place Living History Farm will welcome in the beautiful season of autumn when it hosts its annual Fall Folk Arts Festival.  Always eagerly anticipated\, this celebration of pioneer arts and crafts and the harvest season will be held on Saturday\, September 29\, from 10 am until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 30 from noon until 5 pm.  Admission is $5\, with those under the age of 12 admitted free.  Proceeds go towards the care of the farm’s animals and the continued restoration and preservation of the site\, located at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nFor the 47th consecutive year\, artists from the region will gather to demonstrate 19th century crafts\, as well as to sell a wide array of traditional folk arts and hand-crafted arts of today.  Pumpkins and other autumn produce\, dried flowers\, and plants for fall planting\, as well as a wide range of baked goods and goat milk cheeses\, will be available. \n  \nFestival visitors will be able to learn about\, and purchase\, some centuries-old crafts\, such as hand-made oak rockers\, cuckoo clocks\, paintings on slate\, dough bowls carved from one single log\, and jewelry and utilitarian household items created out of wire (popularized in the 1800’s by tinkers).  With cooler weather on its way\, socks will definitely be a necessity\, and you can see them being crafted on a 19th-century knitting machine.  Other artisans will be offering a wide range of wares\, from framed photographs to primitive dolls to handmade soaps to paper quilling to unique hand-thrown pottery. \n  \nThis year’s featured Heritage Artist is acclaimed basket maker George McCollum\, from Athens\, TN.  A long-time member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild\, Mr. McCollum has been making his award-winning miniature white oak baskets for almost four decades.  (Please note that Mr. McCollum will only be present on Saturday\, September 29.) \n \nGuilds have thrived over many centuries.  These associations of craftspeople from a particular trade of craft will be well-represented at the Festival as the Overmountain Weavers’ Guild will demonstrate spinning and weaving; the Tri-State Basket Guild teaches basket-making to children and youths; and the Senior Artisans\, the First Frontier Quilters\, and the Renaissance Wood Artists demonstrate their skills. \n  \nIntroduced at last year’s Fall Festival\, sorghum will be cooked once again\, in a special area located behind the blacksmith’s shop.  Sorghum cane planted earlier this year will be cut\, stripped and washed in preparation for the time-consuming task of making sorghum.  Mules will turn the mill to squeeze the juice from the cane on Saturday\, September 29\, beginning with the opening of the gates at 10:00 am and continuing until around noon.  (We request\, by the way\, that the mules be observed from a distance; no one will be allowed to ride them or pet them.)  The juice will then be boiled until the water has evaporated\, to the point where only pure sorghum is left in the pan.  This process will take most of the afternoon\, with the sorghum likely be taken off the fire around 4:00 or 5:00 pm.  On Sunday\, September 30\, with the milling and cooking completed\, volunteers will be on hand during the afternoon to talk about the mill\, the cane\, and the process of making sorghum.  Guests may visit the cane patch and compare the sorghum cane with the sugar cane to see the differences up close.  (Please note that the syrup we produce is for demonstration purposes only\, but we will be offering for sale some 100% pure sorghum syrup\, made fresh this year by the Guenther family in Muddy Pond\, TN. \n \nHistory\, as always\, comes alive throughout the farm.  In the log kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, and our energetic Junior Apprentices\, will prepare some of the foods the Preston family would have eaten in the mid nineteenth century\, and outside – weather permitting\, of course – they will fire up the newly-covered bread oven to bake sweet potato biscuits.  Nearby\, apple butter will be cooking\, and everyone will be invited to take a turn stirring the kettle.  The blacksmith’s shop will be open\, demonstrating the various tasks that made the “smithy” such a valuable crafts person in antebellum America.  Kendy Sawyer will be on hand on throughout the weekend with her working steers\, Cannon and Cole.  She will be available to answer all questions\, and explain\, for instance\, that a “working steer” means the animal is trained to work but is not yet old enough to officially be classified as an ox. \n  \nChildren’s activities are always prominent during the Festival\, and this year’s focus is on heritage toys and games.  Modern-day youngsters (and their parents and grandparents!) will learn that\, in the years prior to the War Between the States\, toys and games were usually made from scraps of materials left from things that were built or made around the farm.  Kids will be able to make and take home “buzz saws\,” and they will have the opportunity to hand-crank a jump rope on a machine that was typical of the kind used at that time.  Children of all ages will also be encouraged to try their hands at some of the “chores” that were expected of them on the farm.  New this year will be the first annual Tom Lane Top Challenge.  Tom was a very active volunteer at Exchange Place\, as well as a gardener and wood crafter\, who passed away unexpectedly this summer.  In his honor\, a Top Challenge has been devised\, with a large top scheduled to be given to the winner. \n \nEven with all of the new features\, many popular Festival traditions remain.  Visitors can still see the heritage breed of animals living on the farmstead.  The Sullivan County 4-H Club will again be organizing the popular Scarecrow Challenge\, which encourages individuals\, groups and families to be creative as they continue the tradition of making a scarecrow. To be judged Scarecrows must be on site by 11 am Saturday.  A variety of food items will be available for purchase\, including kettle corn\, funnel cakes\, fried pies\, lunch items\, and more.  And as always during festivals\, the grounds of the farmstead will be alive with music.  Old and new favorites will be playing throughout the weekend; a complete schedule is listed below.  (Please note\, however\, that this list is always subject to last-minute changes.) \n  \nOne of Exchange Place’s most popular events every year is Witches Wynd\, a Halloween-based storytelling adventure\, which will take place on Friday\, October 26 and Saturday\, October 27\, beginning each night at 8 pm. Tickets go on sale for the first time during the Fall Folk Arts Festival.  Only a limited number of tickets are available every year and they sell out quickly\, so we encourage people to purchase them at the Festival.  Tickets are $10 apiece and will be found at the Museum Store. \n  \nFor more information\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, write to exchangeplacefestivals@gmail.com\, or visit our website at https://www.exchangeplace.info. \n  \nExchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of mid-nineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit organization maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and is supported by donations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants. \n  \n  \n  \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 29 \n  \n10 – 11 am                 KINGSPORT COMMUNITY BAND \n  \n11 am – noon           STRING BREAK \n  \nnoon – 1 pm              STATE STREET STRING BAND \n  \n1 – 2 pm                     CHARLOTTE AND ART ELLIS \n  \n2 – 3 pm                     ABINGDON THUMB STRUMMERS \n  \n3 – 4 pm                     STRAWBERRY JAM    \n  \n4 – 5 pm                     RENAISSANCE STRINGS \n  \n  \n  \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 30 \n  \nnoon – 1 pm               \n  \n1 – 2 pm                      \n  \n2 – 3 pm                     NINA KETRON PLUS TWO    \n  \n3 – 4 pm                     RED AND GREY      \n  \n4 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:THE EARLS OF LEICESTER
DESCRIPTION:Orchestra: $35 | Mezzanine: $30 | Balcony: $25 \nThe Earls of Leicester have discovered a kind of magic that allows moments\, once relegated to memories\, to roar back to life. Conjure images of a bygone era when Lester Flatt\, Earl Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys were at the peak of their electrifying showmanship. \nAt an Earls’ show\, straightman intros and sly asides transform the spaces between songs into a tap-dancing combination of context\, comedy and history lessons\, inspired by their bluegrass predecessors. The six-man band includes dobro master Jerry Douglas plus acclaimed writer\, producer and solo artist Shawn Camp on lead vocals and guitar; renowned banjoist Charlie Cushman; veteran bluegrasser Jeff White on vocals and mandolin; Barry Bales on vocals and bass; and fiddler extraordinaire\, Johnny Warren. In 2015\, the Earls amassed more IBMA awards than anyone\, including Entertainers of the Year\, Instrumental Group of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year to name a few. \n

SUMMARY:The Earls of Leicester Concert
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated bluegrass super group The Earls of Leicester will perform at Niswonger Performing Arts Center on September 29th\n\nGREENEVILLE\, Tenn. – Grammy Award winners The Earls of Leicester presented by Jerry Douglas\, will perform on Saturday\, September 29th at 7:30 pm at Niswonger Performing Arts Center. \nThe Earls of Leicester was born out of dobro master Jerry Douglas’ lifelong passion for the music of Lester Flatt\, Earl Scruggs & the Foggy Mountain Boys. The Earls’ mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Flatt and Scruggs\, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing their self-titled debut\, the Nashville-based band far surpassed their own expectations\, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. \nThe six-man band includes Douglas plus acclaimed writer\, producer\, and solo artist Shawn Camp on lead vocals and guitar; renowned banjoist Charlie Cushman; veteran bluegrasser Jeff White on vocals and mandolin; Barry Bales (Douglas’ longtime Union Station bandmate) on vocals and bass; and fiddler extraordinaire\, Johnny Warren. The Earls of Leicester have discovered a kind of magic that\, when harnessed\, allows moments once relegated to memories to roar back to life. Douglas describes his and his bandmates’ hotfooting in vivid detail\, from Cushman “creeping up the middle” to Warren’s deep-rooted antics. “Johnny will come swooping in from the side singing the quartet or come around the back and go between the singers to play a solo\,” Douglas said. “There’s a lot of choreography employed on stage. Johnny does that because that’s the way his father did it\, and that’s the way he’s going to do it.” \nThe Earls of Leicester will release a live album the day before their concert from the recordings of their two-night run at Country Music Hall of Fame’s CMA Theater. The new album offers up a selection of songs that fully capture the pure joy and supreme musicianship that propel their every performance. The album follows the band’s 2016 release “Rattle & Roar” and their eponymous 2014 album. With “Rattle & Roar”\, the Earls conjured up a fresh batch of Flatt and Scruggs songs\, delivered with the Earls’ now signature blend of homage\, virtuosity and perspective. It is overwhelmingly clear that 21st century listeners can’t get enough of the Earls’ re-creations of songs deep rooted by a pioneering duo more than half a century ago. \nSee The Earls of Leicester presented by Jerry Douglas at Niswonger Performing Arts Center on Saturday\, September 29th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for orchestra level seating\, $30 for mezzanine seating and $25 for balcony seats. Tickets are on sale now for all performances for the entire 2018-2019 season and may be purchased online at NPACgreeneville.com\, in person at the NPAC box office\, or by calling 423-638-1679. \nNPAC offers online seat selection with no processing or delivery fees. There is an additional $1.50 ticketing fee per ticket regardless of purchase method. The box office hours are Monday through Friday\, 10 AM until 5 PM. The 1150 seat performing arts center is located adjacent to the campus of Greeneville High School. For venue information\, and to purchase tickets\, please visit www.npacgreeneville.com.

Sally McCoy tells a harrowing and deeply personal story which takes a hard look at how women’s stories and perspectives are too often excluded from our historical narratives. Set in August 1882\, Sally’s three eldest sons are captured by the Hatfield clan. Sally defies her womanly place in the home and crosses miles of Appalachian wilderness in the dark of night to save her children from certain death at the vengeful hands of the Hatfields. After traveling all those miles alone\, she arrives at the home of the Hatfield patriarch\, “Devil” Anse Hatfield\, and refuses to let anything stand in her way until she has seen the “Devil” face to face.

SUMMARY:Tennessee Craft Week
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 Tennessee Craft Week (TCW)\, supported by Tennessee Craft and the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development\, connects and celebrates craft artists\, the work they create and the businesses that support them during the week of October 5-14\, 2018. \nTennessee craft artists are encouraged to participate by creating and submitting an original event\, or by adding an established community craft event into TCW. Additionally\, artists can host an individual Open Studio Day or a reception at a gallery as part of the week’s spotlight on craft. As the statewide advocate and educator for the art of handmade craft\, Tennessee Craft urges all craft artists to be a part of this successful campaign\, branding and promoting their skills\, as well as building the reputation of handmade products “Made in Tennessee.” \nSUBMIT EVENTS HERE: https://tennesseecraft.org/tennessee-craft-week/submit-your-event/ \nDeadline to be included as a Featured Event and included in the printed brochure is July 15. \nAll submitted events will be included on the Tennessee Craft Week website’s event calendar and TNvacation.com\, and promoted on Tennessee Craft’s social media platforms. Events entered after the July 15 deadline cannot be guaranteed the same level of promotion\, due to the increased number of events projected this year. \nThis fourth celebration of TCW is held in conjunction with the annual American Craft Week\, honoring and promoting fine craft across the nation. Hundreds of accomplished artists showing and demonstrating their art (at more than 75 craft-based events across the state) exemplify the impact that the “Made in Tennessee” craft culture brings to our communities\, economy and quality of life. \nThe partnership between the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development and Tennessee Craft garnered national attention earning top honors with American Craft Week Star Awards in the last three years for its engaging artist demonstrations at fifteen Tennessee Welcome Centers. SUMMARY:46th Annual National Storytelling Festival
DESCRIPTION:(Jonesborough\, Tenn.) – Tickets are on sale now for the nation’s premier storytelling event\, the National Storytelling Festival\, held October 5-7. In the age of fast-moving technology\, it seems unlikely that thousands of audience members could spend a weekend spellbound by storytellers\, but that’s exactly what happens in Tennessee’s oldest town during the first full weekend of October each year. A beloved tradition since 1973\, the three-day celebration of the world’s oldest art form is expected to draw more than 11\,000 fans from across the country. \n \nThe Festival’s core programming consists of meticulously produced storytelling shows held beneath big-top tents scattered across downtown Jonesborough. Those performances will run from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The diverse lineup includes Japanese-Korean storyteller Alton Chung\, who grew up with the stories\, superstitions\, and magic of the Hawaiian Islands; Brazilian born dynamo Antonio Rocha; Cowboy poet Andy Hedges; and Chirine El Ansary\, internationally known for her performances of The Arabian Nights\, the Banu Hilal epic\, and Sufi tales. \nThis year’s featured tellers also include perennial southern favorites such as Donald Davis\, Connie Regan-Blake\, and Bil Lepp. By showcasing oral traditions from the South and all over the world\, the Festival inspires unexpected connections and promotes cultural understanding.\nTo complement the Festival’s signature storytelling concerts\, many of the special events scheduled throughout the weekend are included in the price of the ticket\, including Exchange Place\, a concert focusing on new talent; the Swappin’ Ground\, where anyone can tell a story; and a Story Slam competition that offers cash prizes. \nSeparately ticketed events include two pre-Festival concerts also held on the Festival grounds: celebrated storyteller Donald Davis\, on Wednesday\, October 3\, and internationally-known and locally loved band The Black Lilies on Thursday\, October 4. A blend of folk\, soul\, country\, blues\, and rock\, the band’s sound crosses both generations and genres. Both all-ages shows begin at 7:30 p.m.\, and tickets can be reserved in advance or purchased on site for as long as supplies last. \nVisitors can also expect two nights of ghost stories\, which are told in the open autumn air beneath the stars. On Friday night\, our Midnight Cabaret will feature award-winning raconteurs of mountain life\, Sheila Kay Adams and Josh Goforth\, for an evening of toe-tapping music and tales. \nThree workshops led by nationally-known artists will also be held on Thursday\, October 4\, in Mary B. Martin Storytelling Hall: Collecting and Preserving Family Stories with Elizabeth Ellis\, Essential Stories for Effective Communication with Tim Lowry\, and Rock the Flock\, a workshop aimed at motivating others through story with Geraldine Buckley. \n \nAll tickets for the National Storytelling Festival\, including separate ticketed events\, can be purchased online at www.storytellingcenter.net\, at the International Storytelling Center (ISC) in downtown Jonesborough\, or on the Festival grounds. The National Storytelling Festival is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, the Tennessee Arts Commission\, Dunkin’ Donuts\, and Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa. For more information or to make reservations\, call ISC at (800) 952-8392\, ext. 221. \n###

SUMMARY:BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY 2018
DESCRIPTION:Orchestra: $35 | Mezzanine: $30 | Balcony: $25 \nTogether for over 25 years\, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has appeared in concert venues across the world\, sold millions of records and their music has appeared in hundreds of movies and television shows. With sold-out concerts from the Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center\, appearances with many of the country’s finest symphony orchestras\, and television appearances ranging from Dancing with the Stars to Superbowl XXXIII\, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy continues its decades long mission to celebrate and revitalize jazz and swing music — America’s original musical art form — and bring joy to audiences around the world. \nEarly on\, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles\, they reminded the world\, in the midst of the grunge era no less\, that it was still cool to swing. The band\, co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren\, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time\, blending a vibrant fusion of the classic American sounds of jazz\, swing and dixieland\, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture. \n

SUMMARY:Sabine Hill Bicentennial Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Sabine Hill Bicentennial Celebration\n \nOctober 12\, 13 & 14\, 2018\n \n2018 marks the 200th anniversary of Sabine Hill\, the beautiful Taylor family home in Elizabethton\, TN. Perched atop a prominent knoll at the west entrance of Elizabethton\, Sabine Hill stands as a welcoming beacon to one of Tennessee’s most historic areas. Built by the widow of Brigadier General Nathaniel Taylor\, Mary Patton Taylor\, this beautiful surviving example of Federal architecture is a must see. Restored by the Tennessee Historical Commission\, the house has been returned to its 1818 splendor and has been described as one of the finest examples of wood framed Federal architecture in the State of Tennessee. The operation of Sabine Hill is managed by Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park\, and the park has a full weekend of activities planned to commemorate the bicentennial of this significant historic home. \n\n\nThe celebration kicks off at 6:00 PM on Friday\, October 12 with “An Evening with Andrew Jackson” presented in ‘The Gathering Place’ of the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park is proud to welcome historian and renowned living history figure Grant Hardin as he portrays one of America’s most well-known historic characters\, General Andrew Jackson. Jackson was not a stranger to Elizabethton. It is said that when he served as a Tennessee Superior Court Judge from 1797 to 1803\, Jackson held court under the sycamore tree where the Watauga Association had been established 25 years earlier. During the Creek Indian War and the War of 1812\, Jackson was a contemporary of Brigadier General Nathaniel Taylor who may have begun the construction of Sabine Hill as early as 1811. The evening program will begin with a presentation of early 19th century music followed by General Jackson as he recounts his days as a youth during the American Revolution\, his rise in military leadership\, and his finest hour at the Battle of New Orleans. There will be a reception with light refreshments following the presentation. Admission to the event is $8.00. Pre-registration is required. \n \nPlease log on to the following website to register and purchase tickets – www.tnstateparks.com/parks/events/sycamore-shoals.\n \n“An Evening with Andrew Jackson” Schedule:\n6:00 – Doors Open\n6:15 – Early 19th Century Music\n7:00 – General Andrew Jackson\n8:00 – Reception and Light Refreshments\n \nThe celebration continues through the weekend with guided tours of Sabine Hill giving visitors the opportunity to take in the colorful and architecturally detailed interior while learning about the Taylor family who called Sabine Hill home in the early 19th century. Street\, \nElizabethton\, TN 37643.\n \nAs part of your weekend experience be sure to take in these additional interesting and informative programs. \n \nHere in East Tennessee we are taught from youth about the significance of our region and its inhabitants in the American Revolution and the American Civil War. However\, few people understand the crucial involvement that East Tennesseans had in the War of 1812. Melanie Storie\, a lecturer with ETSU’s Department of History and former seasonal interpreter at Sycamore Shoals\, will be presenting a fifty-minute lecture on East Tennessee’s role in one of America’s most important and most-oft-forgotten wars as part of the Sabine Hill Bicentennial Celebration. Her expertise lies within East Tennessee in nineteenth century history and her publications include\, “The Dreaded Thirteenth Tennessee Union Cavalry: Marauding Mountain Men”. The lecture will take place in the Gathering Room within the Sycamore Shoals visitor center from 11:00-11:50 on Saturday\, October 13and is free to the public. \n \nUpper East Tennessee carries a strong legacy of traditional southern music. From bluesman Brownie McGhee to world-renowned singer Tennessee Ernie Ford\, a wide array of music has spread from Tennessee’s mountains abroad. The Taylors of Elizabethton so too produced music that charmed the hearts and ears of locals and foreigners alike. Brothers Bob and Alf Taylor who at separate times held Tennessee’s highest office\, brought mountain music to the national stage by ‘fiddling around’ on the campaign trail\, even fiddling together when they ran against one another in the 1886 gubernatorial contest. Miraculously\, links to the Taylor’s music such as phonograph records\, eye-witness accounts and even Alf Taylor’s fiddle survive to today. Thanks to ETSU’s Reece Museum and director Randall Sanders\, Alf’s fiddle among other Taylor related treasures will be on display at Sycamore Shoals for the Sabine Hill Bicentennial Celebration. Ranger Corbin Hayslett will present a program on East Tennessee fiddling and the Taylor brother’s influence and legacy on Saturday\, October 13th in the Gathering Place within the Sycamore Shoals visitor center. The program will last from 12:00 – 12:50 and is free to the public.\n \nAdditionally the Sabine Hill Social Society will be offering opportunities throughout the weekend for visitors to take a glimpse into the social atmosphere of the early 19th century. These free programs will take place in the ‘Gathering Room’ of the Sycamore Shoals Visitor Center. Playing cards was a very common pastime in the early 1800s. On Saturday\, October 13 from 1:30 to 4:00pm join in the fun\, and learn some early 19th century card games. On Sunday\, October 14 from 1:30 to 4:00pm join Sabine Hill Social Society members to learn about early 19th century dance styles and practices. Dancing was a highly popular social pastime\, so come to learn or just to watch. No partner or prior experience required.  \n \nThere will be plenty of opportunities this particular weekend to get the entire family out for a fun\, entertaining and educational experience while celebrating 200 years of one of the area’s most historic homes. \n \nFor more information and a detailed schedule please contact Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park at 423-543-5808 or visit these websites; www.sycamoreshoalstn.org and www.tnstateparks.com/parks/sycamore-shoals.
