SUMMARY:Lies\, Exaggerations and Tall Tales Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Lies\, Exaggerations and Tall Tales Workshop Set for Aspiring Storytellers\nEver wonder if storytellers have any type of training\, or are their way with words a natural talent?  After winning the 2017 South Carolina Hagood Mills Festival Liars Competition\, local storyteller and former President of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild Jeff Stratton came up with the idea to host a Lies\, Exaggerations and Tall Tales Workshop for folks interested in cultivating their ability to share memories and stories.\nThe workshop will take place on Saturday\, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Jonesborough United Methodist Church’s Fellowship Hall.  Sessions will include training in the history and definitions of tall tales\, the American storytelling culture\, story techniques and how competitions are judged.  The sessions will be followed by a question and answer discussion with representatives from the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild (the longest running group of storytellers in the nation)\, and an opportunity to create your own tall tale.\n“I enjoy sharing the art of story a lot\,” Stratton said. “I’ve been competing and telling stories for a while and I’m also realizing there’s no formula for telling tall tales.” People tell jokes\, but they aren’t spinning them into stories.  I’ve never seen a workshop on this and want to explain necessary ingredients and steps to be successful and entertaining.”\nThe Lies\, Exaggerations and Tall Tales Workshop is free and open to adults\, but reservations are required by emailing jxx2@comcast.net or calling 423-447-7696.

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: James Gregory
DESCRIPTION:For over two decades\, the unforgettable caricature of veteran comedian James Gregory has stood grinning: his shirt untucked\, his arms outstretched\, a carefree welcome to a down-home\, hilarious comedy experience. It’s storytelling at its best. The trademark caricature is the essence of humorist James Gregory’s comedy: rib-tickling reflections on life from the front porch.\nJames is constantly touring. He’s on the road about three days a week\, forty six weeks a year. He continues to entertain sold-out crowds in theaters and comedy clubs and remains in demand for corporate events. James has been the featured entertainer for over 200 corporations\, including the Coca Cola Company\, Kimberly Clark Corporation\, Hewlett Packard and Kroger. James has also been the featured speaker for events sponsored by various civic and church groups.\nJames is heard weekly on syndicated radio shows such as Rick and Bubba\, John Boy and Billy and Bob and Tom. Combined\, these shows are broadcast to people in over 220 cities nationwide. As a result\, he now has a grass-roots following that numbers in the millions.\nJames was born in a rural area about twenty five miles east of Atlanta\, GA. He got his first job at the age of twelve at a small country grocery store. By the time he was fifteen\, he was working thirty-seven hours a week\, as well as going to school. As an adult\, James has worked for the U.S. Postal Service\, the Department of Defense\, and spent almost ten years as a salesman before discovering the wonderful world of stand-up comedy.\nJames does not “tip-toe” through life as if he’s walking on broken glass or egg shells. That style is evident on stage as well. He is not politically correct. Much of his humor is centered on brilliant observations of crazy relatives and people obsessed with the slightest change in weather conditions – now referred to as global warming. He delights in poking fun at modern sensitive parents and out-of-control environmentalists. Gregory has been quoted as saying\, “If you want me to be concerned about endangered species\, you need to convince me that we’re about out of chickens.”\nThe James Gregory show turns the clock back to a time when life was simpler; to a better time\, before the death of common sense; a time when people sat on the front porch and actually talked to each other without a cell phone in their ear.\nJames’ success\, like his comedy\, is the direct result of the values he grew up with. And now\, twenty something years later\, it is this unique brand of humor that packs the crowds into his sold-out shows. The absence of vulgarity sets James apart and his stories are carefully crafted art. “I have lived long enough to know people\, know life”\, Gregory reflects. “My comedy is based on my life experiences. It’s real\, it’s funny and the audience loves it. That’s why I’m still in business.”\n\n\nVenue Information:\nParamount Bristol\n518 State Street\nBristol\, TN\, 37620\nhttps://www.paramountbristol.org/

SUMMARY:Jonesborough Potter Workshop: Bill van Gilder
DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough to Host World Famous Potter\, Bill van Gilder\nA three-day demo-workshop May 11-13\, 2018\n \nThey say every potter has a list of what they want to make. How to make it\, is often the question.\n \nThe McKinney Center in Jonesborough Tennessee will be hosting a three-day demo-workshop led by master potter\, Bill van Gilder. Some 50+ making techniques will be demonstrated in answer to these ‘how-to’ questions; techniques participants will want to use and adjust to fit their own future work. Shortcuts\, tips\, and tool-use at the wheel will be shared through demo after demo.\n \n“Making pots is a puzzle.” Said Kerry Porché \, a local artist one of van Gilder’s students and close friend. “As a potter\, we’re always trying to figure out the secret to that puzzle. Whether it’s the right clay\, the right design\, the right glaze or the right firing technique- and Bill gives you more pieces to that puzzle. For yourself and for the world out there.”\n \nA discussion about glazes will take place during the workshop\, as requested. van Gilder’s ^6 oxidation\, ^8-9-10 gas\, and salt/soda wood-firing slips & glaze recipe sheets will be provided to each participant. Participants are welcome to take photos and are encouraged to bring a notebook. A selection of Bill van Gilder’s hand-tools (van Gilder Clay Tools) and a sampling of his current work are made available for participant purchase.\n \nvan Gilder is described as approachable\, knowledgeable\, fun and really skilled- and an all-around excellent maker. van Gilder’s journey as a potter has created quite the experience. He is a graduate of Harrow School of Art\, Studio Potters\, London\, U.K. He was the Creator & Host\, Throwing Clay television series on DIY Network\, Owner/Director of the Frederick Pottery School Inc.\, he was a featured artist on the PBS Network television broadcast\, Crafting America—The East Coast. He’s sat on the Board of Directors for the Frederick Festival of the Arts\, he has owned Pottery and Craft Galleries\, and he Established Mantenga Pottery\, Swaziland\, Africa\, for World Bank.\n \n“As a potter\, I can only set-up parameters – from the choice of clays and materials to the making and finishing – allowing the nature of the flame to complete the process.” van Gilder said. “My best work seems to make itself\, when the acquired knowledge and intuition of material and fire is allowed to take over. The process is complete when the pot is held in the hand\, connecting the maker to the user – a subtle form of communication and enough reason for me to make pots again.”\n \nThe workshop registration fee is $175.00. The Thursday evening workshop is free and open to the public. You’ll also have the opportunity for the McKinney Center to provide lunch both days for one fee of $20.00. Lunch will consist of assorted sandwiches\, wraps\, dessert bars\, cookies\, sweet tea and water.\n \nThe workshop will be held on May 11th through the 13th at the McKinney Center located at 103 Franklin Avenue Jonesborough\, TN 37659. For more information please contact Theresa Hammons at (423) 753-0562 or send an email to Theresah@jonesboroughtn.org.
