SUMMARY:January Jams: Sam Bush Band with Special Guests The Blue Eyed Bettys
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 12th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 12th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Ricky Skaggs\, NewGrass Revival\, John Cowan \n \nTickets: $40-30 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \n \nOpening Act: \nThe Blue Eyed Bettys \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSam Bush Band\nwith Special Guests The Blue Eyed Bettys\n\n\nIf joy were a person\, he’d bring both peace and frenzy. He’d be full of music\, light\, and energy that soothes even as it stirs us up. Eyes closed\, wire-rim glasses in place\, mandolin pressed against his ribs\, joy would be Sam Bush on a stage. \n“I feel fortunate that when it’s time to play\, no matter how I feel physically or mentally\, once the downbeat starts\, my mind goes to a place that’s all music\,” says Bush. “The joy of the music comes to me and overtakes me sometimes––I just become part of the music.” \nThat rapt merging of life and art fills Bush’s new album Storyman\, a freewheeling collection that gleefully picks and chooses from jazz\, folk\, blues\, reggae\, country swing\, and bluegrass to create a jubilant noise only classifiable as the Sam Bush sound. Many of the songs are stories––several of them true––and the legendary mandolin player co-wrote every one of them with friends including Guy Clark\, Emmylou Harris\, Jon Randall Stewart\, Jeff Black\, and others. \n“I’m hoping it just kind of flows for people and makes them go\, ‘Hey! It’s a Sam record. It sounds like Sam and the band\,’” Bush says. “But for the first time ever\, I also find myself thinking\, ‘I hope you enjoy the stories.’ It’s my singer-songwriter record.” \nThe Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride has long since established himself as roots royalty\, revered for both his solo and sideman work\, which includes time with Harris\, Lyle Lovett\, and Béla Fleck. But instead of kicking back and soaking up honors such as an Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award and suite of Grammys and International Bluegrass Music Association trophies\, Bush still strives relentlessly to create something new. \nRaised on a farm just outside of Bowling Green\, Kentucky\, Bush grew up plowing tobacco fields in the Southern summer heat alongside his family. He started playing mandolin when he was 11 years old. “I believe growing up on a farm probably helped me channel my energy into learning music and being so interested in it\,” Bush says. “Me and my sisters\, we all loved it. I’ve often wondered if that’s because growing up on a farm\, you couldn’t go ride your bike all over town and horse around like the other kids.” \nFor Bush\, a lifetime of channeling his energy has led to stylistic innovations that have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike. \n\n\nSpecial Guests The Blue Eyed Bettys\n\n\nWith Ben Mackel on guitar\, Sarah Hund on fiddle\, and Daniel Emond on banjo\, The Blue Eyed Bettys delight with their folky-bluegrass sound.\nBut what always seems to grab audiences immediately are their powerful vocals in three part harmony. All actors by trade\, The Blue Eyed Bettys met while doing a new play together at the Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota\, FL. They are singers and storytellers first; therein lies their ability to turn boisterous bars into attentive\nlistening rooms and sleepy pubs into raucous parties as they weave stories with their exuberant performances.\n \n“The Blue Eyed Bettys are easily the most exciting Americana act to\nhit Sarasota in the past year…. Their sweet harmonies drive smart\noriginals and judiciously chosen covers.” – Wade Tatangelo\, Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Taking place Jan. 17-19\, 2019\, join the Dollywood Entertainment\nteam\, The International Storytelling Center and Bandtwango\, Dollywood’s newest partner\, for a\ncaptivating weekend event. \nLyrics & Lore brings together some of the country’s most talented storytellers and\nmusicians to celebrate the rich traditions of songwriting and storytelling in the Appalachian\nregion. Audience members have the opportunity to enjoy internationally recognized\nstorytellers as they share their stories and learn about the most popular songs heard on the\nradio. Guests do not have to be a performing or speaking to attend. Additionally\, everyone can\nsit back and enjoy listening to these hit songs on Friday and Saturday evening when the\nsongwriters that created these chart toppers perform. \nBeginning with registration on Thursday\, Jan. 17 and running through the weekend\,\nnationally-recognized storytellers and hit songwriters from country and gospel take center\nstage. On Thursday night\, an opening reception features performances by the duo Thom\nShepherd\, CMA Texas Songwriter of the Year\, and artist Coley McCabe. As an Austin-based\ntouring artist who spent many years as a songwriter in Nashville\, Shepherd now performs\nregularly with his band\, solo and as a duo with McCabe. \nFriday’s songwriting workshops feature discussion and instruction from Sam Tate\, Cole\nTaylor and Chase McGill. Tate is a Grammy-nominated songwriter whose songs have been\nrecorded by a Who’s Who of country artists from Reba McEntire to Rodney Atkins. Taylor has\nquickly become an in-demand country songwriter for a multitude of country artists including\nLuke Bryan\, Jason Aldean\, Cole Swindell and Florida Georgia Line. Songwriting newcomer McGill\nhit his stride in 2018; in October\, he topped the Music Row Songwriter chart at #1 with songs\nby Swindell\, Bryan\, and Kane Brown on the charts simultaneously. \nStorytelling experts Barbara McBride-Smith and Michael Reno Harrell headline the\nstorytelling segment of this year’s Lyrics & Lore on Friday and Saturday. McBride-Smith\ntransports audiences from the ancient world of the Greek gods and goddesses to the eclectic\nshenanigans of her Baby Boomer generation. She is said to interpret folklore with the style of a\nTexas-born cheerleader and has been featured on NPR\, authored two books\, and contributed\nto the multi-volume series\, The Storytellers Companion to the Bible. She is the recipient of the\nNSN ORACLE Circle of Excellence and the American Library Association’s ‘Top Ten Titles’\nawards. \nHarrell is an award-winning songwriter and veteran storyteller/entertainer from the\nSouthern Appalachian Mountains\, where storytelling is as much a part of the culture as\nmusic. Five decades of performing have taken him to more than 40 states and several\ncountries. A consummate performer\, Harrell’s combination of music and storytelling is based in\nexperience – sometimes very funny\, sometimes a bit scary\, often heartwarming and always\nentertaining. \nOn Friday night\, the first evening of the Songwriter Keynote and Concert begins with\nRegie Hamm\, a multidimensional writer and storyteller. Penned as an artist\, producer\,\nsongwriter\, novelist and more\, Hamm has received multiple Grammy Award and Dove\nnominations\, as well as being noted for his 21 #1 hits in the Christian market and one American\nIdol finale song\, “The Time of My Life\,” recorded by David Cook. \nSaturday night\, the final evening’s concert features Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman\, the\nduo who wrote the chart-topping Tim McGraw song “Live Like You Were Dying” that won Best\nCountry Song at the 2004 Grammys. Combined\, these songwriters have penned songs for\nperformers such as Dolly Parton\, Kenny Chesney\, Faith Hill\, Blake Shelton and more. In 2009\,\nWiseman was awarded “Songwriter of the Decade\,” and in 2015\, he was inducted into the\nNashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. \nA full schedule and registration details for Lyrics & Lore is available at\nwww.dollywood.com. Please note that some of the music concerts are separately ticketed\nevents. To stay at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa for the event\, visit\nwww.dollywood.com or call (800) DOLLYWOOD.

SUMMARY:January Jams: Reverend Shawn Amos with Special Guests Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 18th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, January 18th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Keb Mo\, Dom Flemons\, modern blues with a nod to the past \n \nTickets: $22-18 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpening Act: \nBen Hunter & Joe Seamons \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReverend Shawn Amos\nwith Special Guests Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons\n\n\nFrom West Coast clubs\, to Deep South joints\, to European festivals\, to YouTube\, to the podcast universe\, the Reverend Shawn Amos’ message of joyful blues is reaching an ever-increasing flock. The Rev’s distinctive blend of black roots music\, R & B\, and stripped down rock n’ roll brings a bracing\, soul-deep musical experience to audiences starved for authenticity\, for connection. “I derive a lot of satisfaction bringing people joy\,” he says. \nHis third studio album\, The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down\, expands that mission. This time out\, he spices up the mix with 21st century Freedom Songs\, socially conscious soul\, a stripped-down cover of Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” that slyly reveals the glam nugget’s blues bones\, and an austere version of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace\, Love\, and Understanding?” that turns the post-punk gem into modern gospel. At the center of James Saez’ (Social Distortion\, The Road Kings) no-frills production\, the Rev’s voice and harp tie everything together in a stirring\, celebratory whole\, both beholden to history and refreshingly timely. “It’s the oddest birth of any album I’ve made\,” the Rev says. “It has a particular depth.” \nThis sonic evolution is partly the result of over 100 dates in 2016-17\, supporting his chart-topping The Reverend Shawn Amos Loves You. On the road\, the Rev took risks\, listened to his heart\, and honed his chops. In the midst of that came the seismic election of 2016\, and the subsequent altering of the American landscape. All of the above significantly impacted the Rev as a father\, citizen\, musician\, and African-American man\, and all of it can be heard on The Reverend Shawn Amos Breaks It Down. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith Special Guests: Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons\n\n\nSeattle songsters Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons give life to voices that have long been silenced in American culture. Their award-winning performances are highlighted by story-telling that\, rather than bringing the past to life\, vividly shows how the past still lives in the present. \nThrough their songs\, audiences witness current issues crop up again and again in folk songs\, dance tunes\, acoustic blues\, and prison ballads. Ben & Joe bounce from fiddle & banjo breakdowns to a cappella field hollers\, early jazz to gospel songs featuring Piedmont guitar style and rattlin’ bones. \nWith the same versatility that won them the International Blues Challenge in 2016\, and allowed them to record with National Heritage Fellow Phil Wiggins\, the duo celebrates the ways Americans have triumphed over oppression through the vitality of their art. Audiences walk away from Ben & Joe’s concerts and workshops inspired to learn more of their own history and engage more deeply with their communities. \n

DESCRIPTION:Cult Classic \nBeer and Concessions available. \nDoors will open at 8:00 PM\, with the movie starting promptly at 9:00 PM. \nThe Capitol invites you to take a walk on the wilder side of movies with our Cult Classics at The Capitol Film Series. Highlighting those films that live outside of the “mainstream”\, but have found a devoted audience through word-of-mouth\, home video\, streaming\, or TV experiences. \nFor our first film\, we present one of the most outrageous films of the 1990s – the lone\, big-screen outing by Canadian comedy troupe\, The Kids in The Hall: Brain Candy. \nA pharmaceutical company rushes a new anti-depressant to the market before testing the drug could be fully completed. The pill makes people remember their happiest memory\, and although it’s successful\, it has unfortunate side effects. See what happens to the populace\, the drug’s inventor\, and the company when the side effects hit in this roaring comedy! \nWe recommend this one for those who enjoy movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show or have attended our Rocky Horror movie night before. Brain Candy is rated R and those under 17 will not be admitted without parent.

SUMMARY:30th annual Winter Garden Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Come discover your garden’s innate personality and encourage Tennessee’s nature to blossom!\nOur guest Speaker this year is Margie Hunter\, author of Gardening with the Native Plants of Tennessee. She share her wisdom and knowledge of our native plants\, their habits and habitats. Margie gives presentations on native plants and natural history\, serves as a board member for the Tennessee Native Plant Society and Tennessee Invasive Plant Council\, and volunteers with the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Smokies. Margie is a founding board member of the Tennessee Naturalist Program and works with the Tennessee Plant Conservation Alliance. She contributes articles to The Tennessee Conservationist magazine and writes a blog featuring trail and natural history accounts for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park\, Appalachian Trail\, and Tennessee State Parks and Natural Areas.\nAt the seminar\, Margie will teach us about the essential connection between natural communities and gardening. We gardeners often plan only for appearance\, and ignore how nature functions in the landscape. And so we find ourselves fighting nature\, instead of working with nature. Natural communities develop around specific geology\, topography\, soil\, water\, and climate. When we understand nature’s principles of organization\, we can design a more successful and satisfying home landscape. With native plants as primary components\, gardens can be beautiful and can also provide practical benefits. Your yard and garden can conserve resources\, support wildlife\, and highlight regional differences through sense of place.\nMeet at the Warriors’ Path State Park – Recreation building.\nIMPORTANT NOTE – You MUST preregister for this event\, and there will be a small registration fee to help cover expenses.
