SUMMARY:Graphic Novels and Under-Represented Stories: A Talk About Persons of Color in Comic and Graphic Books
DESCRIPTION:Programming is part of the Museum’s Special Exhibit\, For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights. \nOn Thursday\, November 15 at 6:30 p.m.\, Thomas Bryant will discuss images of persons of color in comics\, particularly the recent\, growing trend of Afrocentric graphic novels focused on historical figures and events. This presentation is part of the programming to accompany the special exhibit For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights\, which examines the role that visual culture played in shaping and transforming the struggle for racial equality in America from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s. During the Civil Rights era and beyond\, that visual culture has also included comic books with superheroes such as Black Lightning or focused on topics like the Harlem Hellfighters\, where graphic design helped to make these heroes and stories part of the wider popular culture and also to bring awareness to and understanding of various social issues and histories. \nThis event will be held in the museum’s Performance Theater\, and it is free and open to the public. \nThomas Bryant is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Highlands Community College. He has an undergraduate degree from King College and a graduate degree from Hollins University. His stage play Level to the Ground was selected for the Henri Edmonds’ New Works Festival in Washington\, D.C.\, and his screenplay Our Moon was a finalist in the Canada International Film Festival script contest. He is an avid superhero comic and film buff.

SUMMARY:The Pinnacle Speedway in Lights
DESCRIPTION:  \nA family-favorite holiday spectacle that showcases dazzling Christmas lights returns to Bristol Motor Speedway with the 22nd edition of The Pinnacle Speedway in Lights. \nThe Pinnacle Speedway in Lights serves as the premiere holiday display in east Tennessee spread across a five-mile route illuminated by more than 2 million lights among 250 displays. The popular event serves as the main fundraiser for SCC-Bristol. A trip through the display sends guests down alongside the famed Bristol Dragway quarter-mile and all throughout the property\, culminating with a lap around the historic Bristol half-mile oval. \nSpeedway In LightsBristol Motor Speedway\, Bristol\, TN USATuesday 12 December 2017World Copyright: Barry CantrellNKP\n“The Pinnacle Speedway in Lights started out as a simple fundraiser for children and has turned into so much more\,” said Claudia Byrd\, executive director of the Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities. “It’s a place for loved ones to gather together and enjoy the Christmas spirit. While you enjoy the millions of lights and displays\, you also help those children in need in this region. Nothing could be better than that.” \nMany of the popular displays are back this year to fill the route with cheer. The Symphony in Lights presented by Grand Home Furnishings\, located in the Darrell Waltrip Grandstand\, features approximately 300\,000 lights – 10 times more than the average number on the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree in New York. The lights flash and flicker to the beat of popular Holiday music. \nRace to Space presented by Mycroft Signs\, a galaxy themed tunnel\, is back to provide guests with an out of this world experience. Other guest favorite displays that are returning include: Dueling Dragsters\, The Twelve Days of Christmas\, Dinosaur Village\, Ripley’s Penguin Playhouse\, and Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies. \nSpeedway In LightsBristol Motor Speedway\, Bristol\, TN USATuesday 12 December 2017World Copyright: Barry CantrellNKP\nAt the end of the route\, guests can visit the Appalachian country-themed Christmas Village presented by Eastman Credit Union. The Christmas Village is filled with holiday vendors\, family-friendly midway rides (including a merry-go-round\, pirate ship\, bumper cars and more)\, arts and crafts\, hot chocolate with marshmallows and as always\, the kids will get to visit with Santa Claus. \nOn five special nights this year guests can take “Santa’s Shortcut” for direct access to Christmas Village without having to tour the full light display. Those nights are Nov. 29\, Dec. 6\, Dec. 13\, Dec. 27 and Jan. 3. “Santa’s Shortcut” is $5 per car and those guests will enter at the North Entrance and proceed to ticket booth #9. \nThe Pinnacle Speedway in Lights runs through Saturday\, Jan. 5. The event costs $15 for cars from Sunday through Thursday and $20 on Friday and Saturday nights. For $45\, guests can take advantage of Jingle Bell Lane\, the “fast pass” option that offers a shorter wait time to enter the attraction on select nights. \n11 December\, 2016\, Bristol\, Tennessee USA. Speedway in Lights©2016 Alan Maller / NKP\nTwo other fun options for enjoying Speedway in Lights are “The BMS Express\,” which transforms a local school bus into the Polar Express\, and “Santa’s Speedway Sleigh” sponsored by Tri-Cities Airport\, an open-air tram ride decked with cozy blankets and a BMS staff member along for the ride who serves as host and tour guide. Each attraction runs on select evenings. For reservations\, guests can call 423-989-6900. \nFor those who love ice skating\, the Ice Rink at Bristol Motor Speedway presented by HVAC will open Thursday\, Nov. 15. Skating costs only $6 per session with skate rentals available for $2. \nFor more information\, visit www.speedwayinlights.org. As always\, all proceeds for The Pinnacle Speedway in Lights will be used by SCC to give to numerous organizations that serve children in the 18-county area surrounding BMS.

SUMMARY:Educator Preview Visit of For All the World to See Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE educator visit to the special exhibit For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights on Monday\, November 12\, 4:00—5:30pm. \nFor All The World To See examines the role that visual culture played in shaping and transforming the struggle for racial equality in America from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s. The content of For All the World to See addresses a wide range of issues and includes a few images that are graphic in nature. Some works in the exhibit may be too sensitive for very young children\, and therefore the exhibit is more appropriate for Grade 6 and above\, though a visit could be adapted for Grades 4 and 5. \nYou will have the chance to explore the exhibit; learn about related educator resources\, lessons and activities that are available; hear about the free public programming that goes along with the exhibit; and find out more about booking a school group visit. You can drop in at any time from 4:00 to 5:30pm; there will be a brief curator-led introduction to the exhibit and its resources at 4:15pm. \nFor more information about the exhibit\, please check out the exhibit page here. You can also see the related public programs on our Events page. \nIf you are a teacher or educator and would like to attend this preview visit\, please RSVP to Rene Rodgers at rrodgers@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org. \nThis exhibition has been made possible through NEH on the Road\, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It has been adapted and is being toured by Mid-America Arts Alliance. For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights was organized by The Center for Art\, Design and Visual Culture\, University of Maryland\, Baltimore County\, in partnership with the National Museum of African American History and Culture\, Smithsonian Institution.

SUMMARY:5th Annual Jonesborough Student Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center will be rolling out the red carpet on Thursday\, November 8 at 6PM to welcome the young film students who will debut their films for the public for the first time. This year will mark the fifth annual Jonesborough Student Film Festival\, a night to celebrate the achievements of students in the McKinney Center’s Film Classes from the spring and fall of 2018. \n \nAll of these films are student written and directed. This year\, the students in both classes focused their attention on Jonesborough’s historic people and places. A series of “History Minute” films\, news programs\, and documentaries will take a look at such subjects as Ella Russell\, an African American hospital-trained nurse\, and the first hospital trained nurse to serve East Tennessee. Other subjects include the Chuckey Depot; Elihu Embree and his newspaper\, The Emancipator\, the first publication solely dedicated to the abolitionist movement; Captain Christopher Taylor and the Christopher Taylor Cabin; the Historic Chester Inn; train wreck in Jonesborough during the 19th Century; a feud between Andrew Jackson and Parson Brownlow that spilled into the downtown street; Jonesborough’s own Buffalo Soldier\, Alfred Martin Rhea; and a wide perspective of the Civil War\, and its effects on Jonesborough before and after. \n \nStudents in the classes learned how to create a story board\, develop a film concept\, and write a simple script. They learned how to operate a high-definition video camera\, how to operate studio lightning\, how to use sound and music\, and basic film direction. They also learned how to speak and act for film. They gained a new awareness of the vital role Jonesborough has played in the history of Tennessee and of the United States\, as they did “location shots” throughout town as well as studio shots. \n \nFilm teacher Jules Corriere\, who also serves as the McKinney Center’s Outreach Programming Director\, said\, “The students this year were really hard-working and dedicated to learning about their subjects. It was exciting for me\, as their teacher\, to watch them find creative ways to bring this history to life\, in their own way.” \n \nCorriere also noted that the Heritage Alliance played an important role in these classes\, providing archival photographs and information\, stating\, “Whenever a student asked for a certain photograph or newspaper clipping or other artifact\, Anne G’Fellers-Mason was always there\, providing the resources the students needed.” \n \nThe Film Festival is a way to acknowledge the hard work and creativity needed to make these films. Students will be picked up in a Limo Van\, and driven through town. When they arrive at the McKinney Center\, they will each have their own red carpet walk. Popcorn and drinks will be served\, and the films\, ranging from 2-6 minutes in length each\, will be premiered to the public for the first time. The event is free and open to the public\, and the community is encouraged to come and celebrate these young film makers\, and their contribution to telling Jonesborough’s stories. \n \nThe Film Class is part of the broader Jonesborough Story Initiative\, and a program of Jonesborough Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center. For more information\, contact the McKinney Center at 423-753-0562. \n
