SUMMARY:Virtual Visit: Gray Fossil Site and Museum
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for another “Zoom” through East Tennessee! If you would like to learn more about the Gray Fossil Site and Museum\, join us for a “virtual visit” led by Science Communication Specialist David Moscato. David will provide the audience a peek inside the museum’s fossil labs and explain the paleontological process of preserving\, storing\, and researching East Tennessee fossils. \n  \nThe Gray Fossil Site and Museum\, located in Gray\, Tennessee\, is an active site of paleontological excavation\, research\, and education\, dedicated to exploring ancient ecosystems of East Tennessee and elsewhere. They are committed to sharing the results of paleontological work and research with the public. Visitors can view and learn about an active Pliocene-era fossil dig site that scientists believe was formed by an underground limestone cave. When it collapsed and created a sinkhole\, it left a vast fossil deposit dating back approximately 5 million years. Animals that have been unearthed so far include: a saber tooth cat\, alligator\, tapir\, rhinoceros\, short-faced bear\, and a mastodon\, as well as hundreds of plants and other animals. To learn more about Gray Fossil Site and Museum\, please visit https://gfs.visithandson.org/. \n  \nDavid Moscato is the Science Communicator at the Gray Fossil Site and Museum. He earned a Master’s degree in paleontology at ETSU in 2013\, where he participated in excavations and research at the Gray Fossil Site. From those beginnings as a research scientist\, he shifted his focus to science education and outreach through online efforts as a science writer and podcaster\, as well as in-person positions at places of public education\, most recently returning to the Gray Fossil Site. \n  \nThe visit will take place on Thursday\, September 17\, at 1 p.m. EDT. Join via Zoom or watch live on Facebook. To receive an invitation to the interactive Zoom session\, please email eths@eastTNhistory.org by Thursday\, September 17\, at 9 a.m. EDT.

SUMMARY:StoryTown Radio Show
DESCRIPTION:StoryTown Radio Show Honors First Responders \nThe StoryTown Radio Show will honor first responders from many fields with a live stream production on Monday\, September 28 at 7 p.m. The performance includes stories of local firefighters\, police officers\, Emergency Room nurses\, EMTs\, Red Cross workers\, civil defense volunteers from the cold war\, and volunteer community responders during World War II. \n\nThe stories from this program come from oral histories collected from community members from the region. As Jonesborough has a population consisting of families who have been here several generations as well as many transplants\, the scenes in this show go beyond the boundaries of Washington County\, Tennessee\, and reach as far as England in the 1940’s. Each story represents the important contributions of those brave individuals who show up first\, often placing their own lives at risk\, in order to keep their communities safe. This show explores the many different kinds of “first responders” and include some unexpected heroes. \n\nThe production can be found on the StoryTown Radio Show  Facebook page as a Facebook Live stream at 7 p.m.\, and will be saved on that page for future viewing. \n\nFor safety concerns\, The StoryTown Radio Show has continued to tell the stories of the community during the pandemic as radio and live-stream performances\, without their usual live studio audiences. However\, audiences during the live stream will have a chance to “chat” online with the cast and crew during the show\, as the live-stream page will be moderated during the performance.https:///drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RyV-ev10omUsZGYDH-AyqU1Bx2-7XEMN?usp=sharing

SUMMARY:Jonesborough: 7th Annual Bell Ringing
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 13th\, the State of Franklin Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)\, are hosting their Seventh Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School\, located at 214 East Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library. The program will include history on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution that prohibited denying citizens the right to vote based on gender. Linda Good with the Johnson City Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebration will be honored for her work in commemorating local history. Several groups will be participating\, including the Kings Mountain NSSAR\, the Town of Jonesborough\, Fort Watauga Society Children of the American Revolution\, and the Overmountain Victory Trail Association.  Bring your chairs\, your bells\, and your face coverings that Sunday and “make a joyful noise” as America celebrates the 233rd Anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. \n\nThe event will include a proclamation from Jonesborough Mayor Chuck Vest\, a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem on the cello from Thomas Donahue\, a special presentation from the Fort Watauga Society Children of the American Revolution\, and much more. This year’s celebration will include special\, pop-up bell ringings at specific sites throughout the week of September 17-23. Watch for these pop-up bell ringings on the Heritage Alliance’s social media. \n\nThe bell ringing on September 13th will follow all CDC guidelines. Washington County is currently under a face covering mandate. Social distancing will be observed on the lawn of the schoolhouse\, and there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. Please bring your own chair and your own bell to ring. Seating will not be provided on site. \n\nThe Daughters of the American Revolution began the tradition of celebrating the Constitution.  In 1955\, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.  The resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into law on August 2\, 1956\, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  The State of Franklin Chapter of the NSDAR has been based in Jonesborough since 1929. \n\nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences.  For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information can also be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/.

SUMMARY:Andrew Scotchie at Usa Raft
DESCRIPTION:With two full length releases under his belt\, a festival all his own\, and his band’s 10 year anniversary approaching\, it’s hard to believe that songwriter\, guitar prodigy\, and event producer Andrew Scotchie hasn’t even hit 30. On his latest studio venture\, the Asheville\, NC native packs a punch with six new tracks that boast some of the most electrifying arrangements you’ll hear all year. \nOn the heels of his 2018 LP release “Family Dynamo\,” Scotchie is set to unveil his most mature and sonically diverse collection entitled “Everyone Everywhere” on Friday\, June 26. With heavy themes like corporate greed and inequality prominently featured in the condemnatory track “Funny Money\,” more playful tunes like the sweet retro-rock inspired “Natural Romantic” offer listeners a much needed respite from thinking about these turbulent times. An anthem in its own rite\, leading single “Stepping Stone” sets the stage for a short yet pungent magical mystery ride of psychedelia\, funk\, and jam-adjacent rock that is nothing short of enrapturing. The standout “Fear Mongers\,” starts with a hardy sample of Charlie Chaplin’s famed “The Great Dictator” speech (which required official approval from the late filmmaker’s rights-holding office in Paris)\, declaring that “the misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed” and segues perfectly with Scotchie’s “don’t wait / don’t hesitate / ‘cause the poor man can’t give what the rich man always takes\,” artfully encapsulating the current climate. \nWith such timely social commentary embedded into every track\, the new EP could easily be mistaken for a response to the ongoing pandemic\, though the album was actually recorded months prior. Still\, Scotchie welcomes the serendipity\, and encourages his listeners to adopt their own takes on the lyrics\, especially when they can be utilized to reclaim hope. Scotchie concludes the album with a universal offering in the title track “Everyone Everywhere\,” imploring “Even if you feel lonely / when this world is unkind / call on me\, I’m sure you’ll find / even when you feel you got nothing / everyone everywhere’s got something. \nThis is a socially distanced event. Policies will be enforced to enhance safety of all participants\, staff and performers.

SUMMARY:Long Journey Home
DESCRIPTION:Just about as far northeast in Tennessee as you can get\, you’ll find a place where folks still get together and play Old Time music on their front porches. Every year a celebration takes place honoring the iconic Old Time mountain music style that shaped country music as we know it. \nThis year’s Long Journey Home festival on September 4th and 5th might look a little different\, but even a global pandemic can’t stop the celebration. The anticipated events will be enjoyed virtually: \n· An exclusive one-time community preview of the new film Short Life of Trouble: The Legend of G.B. Grayson\, will be shown Friday\, September 4th at 8pm \n· The largest mural yet A Day in the Life of a Song will be unveiled in Downtown Mountain City- Saturday\, September 5th \n· Authentic Old Time music from heritage music sites throughout Johnson County- September 5th \n· An exclusive guided virtual tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile in Downtown Mountain City- September 5th \n· An online visit with best-selling Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb-September 5th \nAll events will be presented online at www.longjourneyhome.net and on the Long Journey Home Facebook page. \nThe excitement begins on Friday\, September 4th with an exclusive one time online community preview of Short Life of Trouble: The Legend of G.B. Grayson. This film tells the long overdue story of the blind mountain fiddler G.B. Grayson\, whose short career produced The Ballad of Tom Dooley\, Train 45\, Handsome Molly\, and about 40 other songs that became the standards of Bluegrass and early country music. The film was created by Appalachian Memory Keepers in partnership with Johnson County Center for the Arts and funded by Tennessee Arts Commission. \nOn Saturday\, September 5th\, the Musical Heritage Homecoming Tour goes live at 11:30. First\, you can watch the unveiling of A Day in the Life of a Song\, the newest addition to downtown Mountain City’s Musical Heritage Mural Mile. Artists Cristy Dunn\, Temple Reece\, and Lewis Chapman created scenes that celebrate music as a part of everyday life\, from singing while making biscuits to ‘Lassy Making and Sawmillin’ and ending with a family gathered around an old fashioned radio listening to The Grand Ole Opry. \nThe Kody Norris Show will entertain with the songs of G.B. Grayson at noon\, and then two more virtual sites will celebrate the music of Clarence “Tom” Ashley\, Clint Howard and Fred Price with video segments ‘Sawmillin and ‘Lassy Makin’ and My Home in the Mountains. \nAfterwards\, viewers are invited to go for a guided tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile. This virtual tour through beautiful downtown Mountain City will give you an in-depth look into the inspiration behind the musical heritage murals. \nFinally\, acclaimed Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb will join us for an online talk and share her insight into ballads and murders in Johnson County. Wherever you are this year\, you can tune in and share in the sites and sounds that make Johnson County such a special place at www.longjourneyhome.net. \n  \n“It’s about as real as it gets. If you were wondering whether authentic Appalachia still exists\, look no further.” -Evelyn Cook \nFor more information\, please contact Cristy Dunn at 423-957-6346 or Evelyn Cook at 423-727-8700 \ncdunnoriginals@hotmail.com \nor go to www.longjourneyhome.net

SUMMARY:MOONLITE DRIVE-IN THEATRE Disney's Mary Poppins
DESCRIPTION:Based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time and the Broadway musical that played for over 2\,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Awards nominations\, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect Broadway musical at the Moonlite Drive-In! \nThe jack-of-all trades\, Bert\, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense\, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures\, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” \nDisney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

SUMMARY:International Storytelling Center’s Freedom Stories “What You Don’t Know (But Should) About Appalachian Slavery"
DESCRIPTION:International Storytelling Center to Host Virtual Freedom Stories Event  \n     \n(Jonesborough\, Tenn.) – The International Storytelling Center (ISC)\, home to the world-renowned National Storytelling Festival and Storytelling Live! Teller-in-Residence series\, will host a free virtual event titled What You Don’t Know (But Should) About Appalachian Slavery on Saturday\, September 5th\, from 1-2:30 pm as part of the Freedom Stories project. \n  \nFreedom Stories is an ongoing series that illuminates the underappreciated and neglected stories of African Americans in Appalachian history and highlights the role that face-to-face storytelling has played in both African and Appalachian cultures. Through Freedom Stories virtual events\, the project marries performance and discussion\, connecting prominent African American storytellers\, artists\, humanities scholars\, and community experts to trace the rich history of African Americans in Appalachia—from the first African arrivals in Appalachia\, to the shaping of a distinct culture\, to the struggles for freedom and equality. The project will also produce multi-media resources that will be made accessible to a national audience. \n\nAs the nation learns to grapple with difficult truths\, this free public event will serve as a model for how to engage in productive discussions around complex topics. The distinguished panel will feature Frank X. Walker\, a self-identified “Affrilachian” poet and author; author and historian\, Anne Mason\, Executive Director of the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee & Southwest Virginia; West Virginia storyteller and humanities scholar\, Ilene Evans of Voices from the Earth; and Dr. Dinah Mayo-Bobee from East Tennessee State University Department of History. The panel will be moderated by ISC Freedom Stories Project Director\, Dr. Alicestyne Turley. \n\nThe live panel discussion will take place on September 5th\, from 1-2:30 pm EST on the International Storytelling Center’s Facebook timeline and will be followed by a public Q & A. The event will be recorded and made available to watch with closed-captioning post-event. \n\nAlicestyne Turley\, Director of the Freedom Stories Project states of the September Freedom Story\, “Today’s audiences have very limited\, generalized knowledge of American slavery\, a knowledge informed primarily by American entertainment media. Which of course means many audiences have even less information about Appalachia or its history of slavery. Slavery in Appalachia was like the region itself\, unique in its form and application. The September public discussion will be a brief look at this overlooked aspect of American and regional history.” \n\nKiran Singh Sirah\, President of ISC\, says these Freedom Stories discussions are important to the region in the context of the national movement of storytelling. “For example\, how many of us know that in Appalachia\, more people identify as African American than Scots-Irish?” asks Sirah. “The project is not meant to neglect or subdue the stories we do know\, but rather to bring forward\, in public conversation\, the untold stories that contribute to the uniqueness and rich traditions of Appalachia. These stories are integral to the history of the region\, and Appalachia (while often othered) is integral to the story of our entire nation.” \n\nThe project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Discussions Grant\, an award based on projects that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for general audiences. ISC would like to thank the following organizations for their support of the Freedom Stories Project: National Association of Black Storytellers (NABS)\, Appalachian African American Cultural Center\, Black in Appalachia\, Black/White Dialogue\, Green McAdoo Cultural Center\, Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee & Southwest Virginia\, Langston Centre\, Leadership and Civic Engagement at East Tennessee State University\, McKinney Center\, Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association\, and the Town of Jonesborough. \n\nTo learn more about the International Storytelling Center and upcoming Freedom Stories programming\, please visit www.storytellingcenter.net.
