DESCRIPTION:JOHNSON CITY\, TN — Milligan University ESports Team and Visit Johnson City are collaborating to bring a video gaming tournament back to our region for the second year in a row. ESports\, or competitive video gaming\, is growing worldwide. Our great partnership with Milligan University and Sharp Business Systems of Tennessee is a strong foundation and set us on a trajectory to build a world class event\,” said Gavin Andrews\, Director of Sport Development for Visit Johnson City. \n  \nThe event will take place April 9th through April 11th\, 2021. SUMMARY:Conversations That Matter
DESCRIPTION:“Conversations that Matter” is a monthly on-line series from the McKinney Center. In each “Conversation” two local guests will explore their own culture and perspective\, and talk to each other about what makes them unique\, discover their similarities\, and explore their differences. They will look at where their lives might intersect personally and in the community. The goal of each “Conversation that Matters” is for guests and participants to hear real stories\, from real neighbors. \nThe next event in this series will feature Adam Dickson and Felipe Fiuza. This conversation will be moderated by Katelyn Yarbrough and Michelle Treece. It will take place via Zoom on April 8\, at 7 p.m. Register at mckinneycenter.com. \n\nAdam Dickson currently works for the City of Johnson City\, TN as Supervisor of the Langston Centre (Langston)\, a facility promoting multicultural awareness through community arts\, education\, and leadership. Langston sits on the site of the former Langston High School\, Johnson City\, TN’s black high school from 1893-1965. Adam is an Adjunct Instructor of Political Science at East TN State University.  For 15 years he has taught the course “Black American Political Thought” which examines black political ideology and the role of race in American political development. Adam currently serves as Vice-Mayor for the Town of Jonesborough\, TN\, and he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Carson-Newman University. He received a Master of Public Administration degree from East TN State University in 2004. \n\nFelipe Fiuza is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at East Tennessee State University (ETSU)\, where he is also the Director of ETSU’s Language and Culture Resource Center. As director of the center\, he works towards closing the gap between East Tennessean native speakers of English and people from other languages and cultures through language services\, such as interpretation and translation\, offered by the center. Felipe’s first poetry book\, Ucideia\, just won first place in a peer-reviewed literary contest from the Federal University of Espírito Santo Press\, and as a result will be published by them with a release date of March\, 6th\, 2020. His research interests are linked to the intersection between literature and cognitive sciences\, focusing in Brazilian Literature and in Literature from the Iberian Peninsula. \n\nThis monthly series is inspired by the Diversity & Equity Subcommittee at the McKinney Center\, and their desire to highlight the experiences of all voices in Washington County\, Tennessee\, with an intention to include marginalized groups. By showcasing these conversations\, the Diversity & Equity subcommittee hopes to open doors to new ideas and perspectives amongst our very own neighbors. There is value in uplifting these stories so that we may learn from one another. Then\, after hearing from one another our moderators and guest conversationalists will give insight on how to move forward.

SUMMARY:Virtual Speaker Series - Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton
DESCRIPTION:Join the Birthplace of Country Music Museum on Tuesday\, April 6\, 7:00pm for a conversation with author Lydia R. Hamessley about her book Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton’s success as a performer and pop culture phenomenon has overshadowed her achievements as a songwriter. But she sees herself as a songwriter first\, and with good reason. Parton’s compositions like “I Will Always Love You” and “Jolene” have become American standards with an impact far beyond country music. Hamessley will share insights into the impact of Parton’s background on her songs; the ways that those songs have explored women’s lives\, poverty\, love and heartbreak; and the genius and creativity of Parton’s songwriting. \nLydia Hamessley is Professor of Music at Hamilton College (Clinton\, NY) where she teaches courses in country music\, medieval and Renaissance music\, music in film\, and world music. She received her Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Minnesota in 1991. She writes on old-time and bluegrass music\, with an emphasis on women and Southern Appalachia. She has also written about the banjo in nineteenth-century America; Appalachian murder ballads; and Peggy Seeger. She appeared in the BBC2 documentary Dolly Parton: Here I Am\, which is currently available on Netflix. She is also a clawhammer banjo player. \n“Unlikely Angel: The Songs of Dolly Parton” is free and open to the public\, but please register to attend.

DESCRIPTION:ARAMOUNT BRISTOL PRESENTS\n\n\n\nBéla Fleck & the Flecktones\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThu\, May 28\, 2020\n\n\nDoors: 7:00 pm / Show: 8:00 pm\n\n\n$67-87 plus applicable taxes and fees / Members save $6 per ticket\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\nGroundbreaking\, Grammy-winning quartet Béla Fleck & the Flecktones will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a North American tour. Banjoist Béla Fleck\, harmonica and keyboardist Howard Levy\, bassist Victor Wooten and percussionist / drumitarist Roy “Future Man” Wooten have been creating some of the most forward thinking music during their long\, storied career. While all manners of genres come into play – from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances – the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own\, a meeting of musical minds that remains\, as ever\, utterly indescribable. \n“Victor Wooten would lay down thick and dirty bass grooves throughout the night\, while Bela Fleck creates sounds with the banjo that are seemingly impossible. No matter what style they are playing\, each is at the absolute highest level of craftsmanship on his instrument.” – Glide Magazine

SUMMARY:Steam Up Mini Railroad Event
DESCRIPTION:JOHNSON CITY – The George L. Carter Railroad Museum\, located in the Campus Center Building of East Tennessee State University\, brings the enjoyment of steam locomotion in miniature form back to the Tri-Cities on Saturday\, March 27\, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nFollowing the canceled 2020 Heritage Days season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic\, the museum and its fans are planning for this year’s day of recalling the steam engines that once knit the nation and the industrial world together. \nFrom the smallest work units to the magnificent giants that headed up crack express trains and “hot manifest” freights\, many varieties of steam locomotive are always on hand for this event. Even models of Thomas the Tank Engine might make an appearance (and are always on hand in the interactive Little Engineers children’s center). \nAt no charge\, visitors may view the exhibit halls\, including the museum’s nationally renowned “Tweetsie” (East Tennessee & Western North Carolina) narrow gauge representation\, one of four operating model train layouts in the facility. \n“Of course\, there remains a mystique about steam engines that has never left the American psyche\,” said Geoff Stunkard\, Heritage Days coordinator. “These were perhaps the most iconic representation of the growth of industrial progress\, connecting people and products more than any previous invention. With so much of the mechanical equipment visible to the eye\, coupled with steam\, fire and sound\, it is simply entrancing to appreciate the design.” \nFor many communities in the 19th century\, being on an active railroad line was life-changing. As the system grew nationally\, the harkening of the locomotive’s whistle was intricately linked to dreams of future travel\, romance and success. By the beginning of the Second World War\, this technology had become far advanced from its origins\, but internal combustion in the form of diesels still proved more efficient and economical\, a duo of factors that would quickly and permanently end the steam locomotive’s general use on all major railroad companies by 1960. \n“At the time\, ideas of ecological impact were not firmly established\, and the fact this technology actually evolved out of existence is a blessing in disguise\,” Stunkard says. “Today\, there are just a handful of these machines that can still operate\, and their use for demonstration and remembrance has very little impact in that regard. Had this technology continued unchallenged\, it is likely governmental activism would have made them almost impossible to witness in person today.” \nIn addition to the accurately detailed steam trains in operation on the ongoing ET&WNC model layout\, which is configured to 1925\, the museum’s large 24×44 HO scale layout will host many varieties of steam trains for this Heritage Day. \nThe Mountain Empire Model Railroaders Club and the George L. Carter Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society serve as hosts during the museum’s operating hours. Memberships are available in both of these organizations.  In addition to the displays\, there is also a growing research library and an oral history archive being established as part of the educational services of this university museum. \nThe museum can be identified by a flashing railroad crossing signal at the back entrance to the Campus Center Building. Visitors should enter ETSU’s campus from State of Franklin Road onto Jack Vest Drive and continue south to David Collins Way; turn left onto John Roberts Bell Drive at end\, then right and then next left onto Ross Drive (176) to end\, adjacent to the flashing RR crossing sign. \nFor more information about the museum or its Heritage Day events\, contact Fred Alsop at 423-439-6838 or alsopf@etsu.edu. For disability accommodations\, call the ETSU Office of Disability Services at 423-439-8346. \nNote: Because of COVID-19\, all visitors must wear a mask to be admitted and will be temperature-checked at the museum entrance.

But because of their professionalism and skill\, the end result is a show that will delight audiences of all ages.” – Huntington Herald Dispatch \n“The Cat in the Hat\, with his cake on a rake\, has nothing on the Golden Dragon Acrobats.” – Newsday \n“There is a precision and beauty about everything these performers do.” – Washington Post

SUMMARY:Kingsport Speedway Race
DESCRIPTION:Speedway officials released the track’s 2021 schedule Thursday with the first race slated for Friday\, March 26. It’s the same weekend as the Food City Dirt Race at Bristol Motor Speedway\, and the hopes are some Cup Series fans will come check out the NASCAR Advance Auto Weekly Series action at Kingsport’s 3/8-mile oval. \nThat event comes after three weeks of testing starting on March 6. The Kingsport Speedway schedule runs through Sept. 10 with ticket prices the same as last season — $12 for adults and kids 12-under free. \nDespite the challenges of 2020\, Kingsport Speedway was able to have a full season of racing. \n“There was so much shut down in 2020 and events that didn’t happen. We were happy to bring everybody in the Tri-Cities some short track racing\,” Kingsport Speedway General Manager Karen Tunnell said. “Getting the schedule out\, it gives everybody something to look forward to.” \nLate Model Stock returns as the featured class. Other classes include Sportsman\, Mod 4\, Pure 4 and Pure Street. A new racing class is also set to debut. \n“We’re in the process of building a V-6 entry level class\, really affordable where around $1\,500 you can get in a car. We’re working on the rules now\,” Tunnell said. \nThe track is offering other affordable ways to get behind the wheel. Kingsport Speedway is debuting time-trial Tuesday\, where you bring your street car and make passes to turn a fast lap. They’re also working on the Kingsport Miniway schedule and will have rental karts to test through the week. \nThe high-powered karts were purchased from NASCAR driver Blake Jones. \nA special event for spectators\, the popular Southeast Super Truck Series is scheduled to return June 19. \nKres VanDyke is the defending Late Model Stock track champion. Other 2020 champions were: Kyle Barnes (Sportsman)\, Kevin Canter (Mod 4)\, Billy Byington (Pure 4) and Tony Dockery (Pure Street). \nFull Schedule: Tentative and subject to change. All times Eastern standard. \n(LM) Late Model – (SPTS) Sportsman – (PS) Pure Street – (P4) Pure 4  (M4) Mod 4 – (V6) \nMarch 6th – Open Practice 12 pm to 5 pm \nMarch 13th – Open Practice 12 pm to 5 pm \nMarch 20th – Open Practice 11 am to 4 pm \nMarch 25th – Open Practice 3 pm to 9 pm \nMarch 26th -1st Race Model City Night LM\, P4\, PS\, M4\, SPTS \nApril 2nd – Twin P4\, LM\, SPTS\, PS\, M4 \nApril 9th – OFF \nApril 16th – Mountain Empire Fence Co Twin SPTS\, P4\, PS V6\, LM \nApril 23rd – OFF \nApril 30th – Chain Race\, Twin PS\, M4\, P4\, LM \, SPTS \nMay 7th – Twin LM\, SPTS\, M4\, P4\, PS \nMay 14th – Patriot Mining Night LM\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, V6 \nMay 21st – LM\, SPTS\, PS\, P4\, M4 \nMay 28th – Legends Tribute Night LM\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, V6 \nJune 4th – LM\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, M4 \nJune 11th – Triple K Trucking Night LM\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, M4 \nJune 18th – OFF \nJune 19th – Southeast Super Truck Series \nJune 25th – Q Bargain Outlet Night LM\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, M4 \nJuly 2nd – WQUT Independence Night **FIREWORKS** Twin P4\, PS\, LM\, SPTS\, V6 \nJuly 9th – OFF \nJuly 16th – Hot Rod Car Show Night LMSC\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, M4 \nJuly 23rd – LMSC\, SPTS\, P4\, PS\, V6 \nJuly 30th – Patriot Recycling Night Twin Pure Street\, LM\, P4\, M4\, SPTS \nAug 6th – Big Rig Night LM\, P4\, PS\, SPTS\, V6 \nAug 13th – Twin P4\, LM\, PS\, SPTS\, M4 \nAug 20th – Twin LM\, SPTS\, V6\, P4\, PS \nAug 27th – Twin M4\, LM\, SPTS\, PS\, P4 \nSept 3rd – Twin SPTS\, LM\, V6\, PS\, P4 \nSept 10th – Championship Night LM\, SPTS\, V6\, M4\, PS\, P4 \nArticle by Jeff Birchfield\, JC Press. \n  \nFor more information on Kingsport Speedway\, visit our website at –www.kingsportspeedway.com \nFresh content and updates can also be found on the tracks Facebook page (@KingsportSpeedway)\, Twitter (@KpSpeedway)\, Instagram (@KingsportSpeedway)\, Snapchat (@KptSpeedway)\, and YouTube (@KingsportSpeedway) \n  \nAbout Kingsport Speedway \nKingsport Speedway has provided race fans in the Tri-Cities\, Tennessee and surrounding areas with exciting short track racing since 1965.
