DESCRIPTION:2018 BATTLE OF BLOUNTVILLE CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT \nComing Oct. 9-11\, 2015 to the Old Hawley Farm\, 1173 Hawley Rd.\, Blountville\, TN \n  \nBLOUNTVILLE\, TENN.  – The 2018 Battle of Blountville Civil War Reenactment will be held on September 28-30\, 2018\, at the Old Hawley Farm\, 1173 Hawley Rd.\, Blountville\, TN 37617.  Drawing over 7\,000 visitors to its arena in previous years\, the award-winning event is held annually on the beautiful 60-acre site known as the Old Hawley Farm.  The mission and purpose of the Civil War Reenactment is to commemorate the Civil War Battle of Blountville which took place on September 22\, 1863\, and to promote heritage tourism in Northeast Tennessee. \nActivities will begin at 9 AM on Fri.\, Sept. 28\, with “Education Day”\, a special opportunity for regional school groups from across East TN and Southwest VA.  Students will enjoy visiting Civil War encampments and living history demonstrations by various artisans and historians.  Anyone wishing to schedule a school group may do so by calling (423) 323-4660. Students\, parents\, teachers and chaperones will be admitted free of charge on Friday only. \nTwo full-scale Civil War Reenactments will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Camps open at 9 AM each day\, with several activities going on throughout the day until 5 PM on Saturday and 3 PM on Sunday.  Col. Stephen Lundberg will be in command of the Union Army\, and Col. Aaron Sells will be in charge of the Confederate forces.  Reenactors\, historians and heritage organizations will be coming together to present a living history in commemoration of the battle.  The event will include authentic Civil War battle reenactments\, camp life scenarios\, military and civilian life demonstrations and more.   Sunday’s event will begin with an old-time\, open-air church service at 9 AM on Sunday. Country Boys’ Kitchen will be on hand throughout the weekend to offer food vending. \nDisplays and demonstrations throughout the weekend will include Civil War music; wagon displays; impressionists of Civil War personas; Civil War games; Civil War medical displays\, Union and Confederate encampments and more. \nADMISSION is $3 for Adults\, and Children 6 and under are free. \nDIRECTIONS \nOld Hawley Farm is located at 1173 Hawley Rd.\, Blountville\, TN. Turn left onto Hawley Road and enter the Battle of Blountville event site. \nABOUT THE BATTLE \nEast Tennessee was of strategic importance during the Civil War primarily because of the East Tennessee & Virginia Railroad. Early in the war\, both sides recognized the important of the railroad line for both supplies and communications. Throughout the Civil War\, several battles took place in order to gain possession of this railroad\, and one of those was the Battle of Blountville which took place on September 22\, 1863. That fateful little day left a burning  town… A burned jail\, a gutted Court House\, with businesses and homes destroyed.  Only a few historic structures and homes remained. Left behind were the dead and wounded from both sides as well as a town destroyed. Here on this ground\, as well as in Gettysburg\, men fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice. SUMMARY:Exchange Place: Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Exchange Place Living History Farm will welcome in the beautiful season of autumn when it hosts its annual Fall Folk Arts Festival.  Always eagerly anticipated\, this celebration of pioneer arts and crafts and the harvest season will be held on Saturday\, September 29\, from 10 am until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 30 from noon until 5 pm.  Admission is $5\, with those under the age of 12 admitted free.  Proceeds go towards the care of the farm’s animals and the continued restoration and preservation of the site\, located at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nFor the 47th consecutive year\, artists from the region will gather to demonstrate 19th century crafts\, as well as to sell a wide array of traditional folk arts and hand-crafted arts of today.  Pumpkins and other autumn produce\, dried flowers\, and plants for fall planting\, as well as a wide range of baked goods and goat milk cheeses\, will be available. \n  \nFestival visitors will be able to learn about\, and purchase\, some centuries-old crafts\, such as hand-made oak rockers\, cuckoo clocks\, paintings on slate\, dough bowls carved from one single log\, and jewelry and utilitarian household items created out of wire (popularized in the 1800’s by tinkers).  With cooler weather on its way\, socks will definitely be a necessity\, and you can see them being crafted on a 19th-century knitting machine.  Other artisans will be offering a wide range of wares\, from framed photographs to primitive dolls to handmade soaps to paper quilling to unique hand-thrown pottery. \n  \nThis year’s featured Heritage Artist is acclaimed basket maker George McCollum\, from Athens\, TN.  A long-time member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild\, Mr. McCollum has been making his award-winning miniature white oak baskets for almost four decades.  (Please note that Mr. McCollum will only be present on Saturday\, September 29.) \n \nGuilds have thrived over many centuries.  These associations of craftspeople from a particular trade of craft will be well-represented at the Festival as the Overmountain Weavers’ Guild will demonstrate spinning and weaving; the Tri-State Basket Guild teaches basket-making to children and youths; and the Senior Artisans\, the First Frontier Quilters\, and the Renaissance Wood Artists demonstrate their skills. \n  \nIntroduced at last year’s Fall Festival\, sorghum will be cooked once again\, in a special area located behind the blacksmith’s shop.  Sorghum cane planted earlier this year will be cut\, stripped and washed in preparation for the time-consuming task of making sorghum.  Mules will turn the mill to squeeze the juice from the cane on Saturday\, September 29\, beginning with the opening of the gates at 10:00 am and continuing until around noon.  (We request\, by the way\, that the mules be observed from a distance; no one will be allowed to ride them or pet them.)  The juice will then be boiled until the water has evaporated\, to the point where only pure sorghum is left in the pan.  This process will take most of the afternoon\, with the sorghum likely be taken off the fire around 4:00 or 5:00 pm.  On Sunday\, September 30\, with the milling and cooking completed\, volunteers will be on hand during the afternoon to talk about the mill\, the cane\, and the process of making sorghum.  Guests may visit the cane patch and compare the sorghum cane with the sugar cane to see the differences up close.  (Please note that the syrup we produce is for demonstration purposes only\, but we will be offering for sale some 100% pure sorghum syrup\, made fresh this year by the Guenther family in Muddy Pond\, TN. \n \nHistory\, as always\, comes alive throughout the farm.  In the log kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, and our energetic Junior Apprentices\, will prepare some of the foods the Preston family would have eaten in the mid nineteenth century\, and outside – weather permitting\, of course – they will fire up the newly-covered bread oven to bake sweet potato biscuits.  Nearby\, apple butter will be cooking\, and everyone will be invited to take a turn stirring the kettle.  The blacksmith’s shop will be open\, demonstrating the various tasks that made the “smithy” such a valuable crafts person in antebellum America.  Kendy Sawyer will be on hand on throughout the weekend with her working steers\, Cannon and Cole.  She will be available to answer all questions\, and explain\, for instance\, that a “working steer” means the animal is trained to work but is not yet old enough to officially be classified as an ox. \n  \nChildren’s activities are always prominent during the Festival\, and this year’s focus is on heritage toys and games.  Modern-day youngsters (and their parents and grandparents!) will learn that\, in the years prior to the War Between the States\, toys and games were usually made from scraps of materials left from things that were built or made around the farm.  Kids will be able to make and take home “buzz saws\,” and they will have the opportunity to hand-crank a jump rope on a machine that was typical of the kind used at that time.  Children of all ages will also be encouraged to try their hands at some of the “chores” that were expected of them on the farm.  New this year will be the first annual Tom Lane Top Challenge.  Tom was a very active volunteer at Exchange Place\, as well as a gardener and wood crafter\, who passed away unexpectedly this summer.  In his honor\, a Top Challenge has been devised\, with a large top scheduled to be given to the winner. \n \nEven with all of the new features\, many popular Festival traditions remain.  Visitors can still see the heritage breed of animals living on the farmstead.  The Sullivan County 4-H Club will again be organizing the popular Scarecrow Challenge\, which encourages individuals\, groups and families to be creative as they continue the tradition of making a scarecrow. To be judged Scarecrows must be on site by 11 am Saturday.  A variety of food items will be available for purchase\, including kettle corn\, funnel cakes\, fried pies\, lunch items\, and more.  And as always during festivals\, the grounds of the farmstead will be alive with music.  Old and new favorites will be playing throughout the weekend; a complete schedule is listed below.  (Please note\, however\, that this list is always subject to last-minute changes.) \n  \nOne of Exchange Place’s most popular events every year is Witches Wynd\, a Halloween-based storytelling adventure\, which will take place on Friday\, October 26 and Saturday\, October 27\, beginning each night at 8 pm. The Earls of Leicester have discovered a kind of magic that\, when harnessed\, allows moments once relegated to memories to roar back to life. Douglas describes his and his bandmates’ hotfooting in vivid detail\, from Cushman “creeping up the middle” to Warren’s deep-rooted antics. “Johnny will come swooping in from the side singing the quartet or come around the back and go between the singers to play a solo\,” Douglas said. “There’s a lot of choreography employed on stage. Johnny does that because that’s the way his father did it\, and that’s the way he’s going to do it.” \nThe Earls of Leicester will release a live album the day before their concert from the recordings of their two-night run at Country Music Hall of Fame’s CMA Theater. The new album offers up a selection of songs that fully capture the pure joy and supreme musicianship that propel their every performance. The album follows the band’s 2016 release “Rattle & Roar” and their eponymous 2014 album. SUMMARY:46th Annual National Storytelling Festival
DESCRIPTION:(Jonesborough\, Tenn.) – Tickets are on sale now for the nation’s premier storytelling event\, the National Storytelling Festival\, held October 5-7. In the age of fast-moving technology\, it seems unlikely that thousands of audience members could spend a weekend spellbound by storytellers\, but that’s exactly what happens in Tennessee’s oldest town during the first full weekend of October each year. A beloved tradition since 1973\, the three-day celebration of the world’s oldest art form is expected to draw more than 11\,000 fans from across the country. \n \nThe Festival’s core programming consists of meticulously produced storytelling shows held beneath big-top tents scattered across downtown Jonesborough. Those performances will run from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, and 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The diverse lineup includes Japanese-Korean storyteller Alton Chung\, who grew up with the stories\, superstitions\, and magic of the Hawaiian Islands; Brazilian born dynamo Antonio Rocha; Cowboy poet Andy Hedges; and Chirine El Ansary\, internationally known for her performances of The Arabian Nights\, the Banu Hilal epic\, and Sufi tales. \nThis year’s featured tellers also include perennial southern favorites such as Donald Davis\, Connie Regan-Blake\, and Bil Lepp. By showcasing oral traditions from the South and all over the world\, the Festival inspires unexpected connections and promotes cultural understanding.\nTo complement the Festival’s signature storytelling concerts\, many of the special events scheduled throughout the weekend are included in the price of the ticket\, including Exchange Place\, a concert focusing on new talent; the Swappin’ Ground\, where anyone can tell a story; and a Story Slam competition that offers cash prizes. \nSeparately ticketed events include two pre-Festival concerts also held on the Festival grounds: celebrated storyteller Donald Davis\, on Wednesday\, October 3\, and internationally-known and locally loved band The Black Lilies on Thursday\, October 4. The community is invited to “Turn out for the Cure” to make a difference for those in our community who are battling breast cancer – while supporting the performing arts. \nYour $50 contribution (plus applicable venue fees) includes admission\, desserts & drinks\, live & silent auctions\, and thrilling performances of short works by the dancers of the acclaimed Highlands Ballet. \nThe evening’s entertainment begins with excerpts of original choreography from Highlands Ballet’s repertoire – “Gershwin\, by George\,” “Hallelujah\,” and the new “All That Jazz.” In addition\, the company will present a sneak preview of “Magic Butterfly\,” a brand new ballet that will debut at Paramount Bristol later this year. “Magic Butterfly is a collaboration with composer Evelyn Pursley-Kopitzke and the Paramount Chamber Players. \nDuring the evening\, patrons can bid on fabulous auction packages including trips\, event tickets\, and other luxury items including a pink Fender Stratocaster guitar.
