SUMMARY:Emancipation Saturday: An Appalachian Tradition
DESCRIPTION:The International Storytelling Center (ISC)\, home to the world-renowned National Storytelling Festival and Storytelling Live! Teller-in-Residence series\, will host a free digital event titled Emancipation Saturday: An Appalachian Tradition on Saturday\, August 8th\, from 1-2:30 pm as part of the Freedom Stories project. \n  \nFreedom Stories is an ongoing series that illuminates the underappreciated and neglected stories of African Americans in Appalachian history and highlights the role that face-to-face storytelling has played in both African and Appalachian cultures. Through Freedom Stories digital events\, the project marries performance and discussion\, connecting prominent African American storytellers\, artists\, humanities scholars\, and community experts to trace the rich history of African Americans in Appalachia—from the first African arrivals in Appalachia\, to the shaping of a distinct culture\, to the struggles for freedom and equality. The project will also produce multi-media resources that will be made accessible to a national audience. \n\nAs the nation becomes more familiar with the history of the Juneteenth celebration\, the next digital discussion will focus on the history and stories of the lesser-known Appalachian Emancipation Saturday celebration. The distinguished panel will feature author and scholar Dr. Cicero Fain of the College of Southern Maryland; Black in Appalachia director William Isom II; and Jasmine Henderson\, a spoken word artist and community organizer residing in Johnson City\, Tennessee. The panel will be moderated by ISC Freedom Stories Project Director\, Dr. Alicestyne Turley. \n\n“Reflection upon Emancipation Saturday traditions requires an expansion of our current knowledge regarding Central Appalachia during the American Civil War and during Reconstruction politics\,” says Turley. We are accustomed to discussing the role of other southern states\, but we often overlook the fact that Tennessee supplied over 21\,000 black men to fight in the Civil War\, and elected 14 black men to serve as state representatives in the War’s aftermath—a political move unmatched in the region. Emancipation traditions have meaning and purpose. Exploring the “how” and “why” of these traditions is an important step in bringing unity and dialogue to our on-going conversations regarding our Appalachian past and improved Appalachian future.” \n\nThe live panel discussion will take place on August 8th\, from 1-2:30 pm EST on the International Storytelling Center’s Facebook timeline and will be followed by a public Q & A. The event will be recorded and made available to watch with closed-captioning post-event. \n\nKiran Singh Sirah\, President of ISC\, says these Freedom Stories discussions are important to the region in the context of the national movement of storytelling. “For example\, how many of us know that in Appalachia\, more people identify as African American than Scots-Irish?” asks Sirah. “The project is not meant to neglect or subdue the stories we do know\, but rather to bring forward\, in public conversation\, the untold stories that contribute to the uniqueness and rich traditions of Appalachia. These stories are integral to the history of the region\, and Appalachia (while often othered) is integral to the story of our entire nation.” \n\nThe project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Discussions Grant\, an award based on projects that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for general audiences. ISC would like to thank the following organizations for their support of the Freedom Stories Project: Appalachian African American Cultural Center\, Black in Appalachia\, Black/White Dialogue\, Green McAdoo Cultural Center\, Heritage Alliance\, Langston Centre\, Leadership and Civic Engagement at East Tennessee State University\, McKinney Center\, Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association\, and the Town of Jonesborough. \n\nTo learn more about the International Storytelling Center and upcoming Freedom Stories programming\, please visit www.storytellingcenter.net. \n\n###

SUMMARY:Triumphant Quartet
DESCRIPTION:TOM MINOR PRESENTS Triumphant Quartet\n$13-14.50 plus applicable taxes and fees / Members save $2 per ticket \nThe one consistent thing about life is change. Things around us are constantly changing. So when a group like Triumphant Quartet maintains consistency\, it speaks volumes about whom they are and what all they have accomplished. Triumphant is the face of quality Gospel Music\, Christian integrity\, family values\, friendship and dedication. \nThe group has been that way since their beginnings in 2003\, when the four friends first walked out on to the stage of the Louise Mandrell Theater\, in Pigeon Forge\, Tennessee as a headlining talent. Each current Triumphant group member was there in that defining moment\, and has continued together ever since. Their smooth harmonies\, and rich quartet sound quickly gained them national attention\, recognition and concert demand. \nThat popularity promoted the group in 2008\, from singing daily at the theater\, to touring nationally and performing in major concert venues\, auditoriums and churches. It has also voted them the Fan Favorite Quartet in the Gospel Music field for the last six years\, and each group member also being nominated for and receiving various awards. Triumphant Quartet has had three #1 Songs and several others have climbed the Top 40 music charts\, which has also contributed to their popularity. \nGospel music fans agree that the triumphant sound is distinctive\, solid quartet singing. But Triumphant excels in diversity\, and also expands their musical borders to a wide variety of styles\, that is enjoyed by church audiences and music lovers. When Triumphant takes the stage\, the audience is entertained by the musical variety\, the engaging personalities and a bond that is brought together by years of friendship. Audiences will find themselves smiling\, laughing\, crying\, encouraged and uplifted. And most of all\, they will walk away having had the Gospel Message presented to them in a powerful way\, with a hope that many will receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ is the focus of Triumphant. He is the reason they sing\, and these four gentlemen stay consistent and steadfast in their goal of giving their very best in all they do and every song sung.

SUMMARY:Johnson City Omnium
DESCRIPTION:The Johnson City Omnium is celebrating its 14th year in 2020 with a few adjustments from its typical format. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic\, the event that is typically held at the end of May in Downtown Johnson City\, will take place August 15th and 16th\, 2020 in Elizabethton\, Tennessee. Details regarding these changes as well as new policies concerning Covid-19 can be found at www.jcomnium.com \n  \nThe three races that make up the Omnium are known to cyclists as the most challenging racing east of the Rockies. The huge variety in terrain and type of racing has proven to be instrumental in developing bicycle racers who can be competitive both nationally and internationally. \n  \nTwo of the races will follow the same routes from previous years. On August 15th\, racers compete in the Carter County Roan Groan. This race takes riders on as many as 80 miles and almost 10\,000 feet of climbing. It’s followed by the Ballad Health Time Trail in Unicoi County. This 3 mile course features a 1 mile climb. The final race in the series takes place on Sunday\, August 16th.  Spectators are encouraged to line the streets in Downtown Elizabethton to see the action up close at the Fat Tire Criterium. This course is expected to be even faster than the Johnson City course and organizers anticipate plenty of action. \n  \nEarly registration for the Johnson City Omnium recently closed with a 45% increase over last year’s early registration. These early registrants indicate not only an increase in the number of racers but very competitive fields. There are three current National Champions\, four returning Omnium winners from last year and the 2018 Omnium Pro/Am winner. They represent 19 States. \n  \n“With all of the races either being postponed or canceled\, it’s both refreshing and motivating knowing that a race as popular\, and hard\, as Johnson City is still going to be happening\,” said Pro/Am racer and current National Road Champion Luca Scuriatti. The 17 year-old from Washington\, DC added\, “I am really looking forward to the road race in particular\, as I’ve never done a race with over 9\,000 ft of climbing!” \n  \nProceeds from the event go to the Science Hill High School NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) racing team\, Northeast Tennessee Cycling NICA racing team\, Johnson City Morning Rotary Foundation\, Milligan Women’s Elite Cycling and Carter County Amateur Radio Club. \n  \nFor more details on racers to watch\, returning winners\, and quotes\, please see that attached info sheet. SUMMARY:McKinney Center Fall Open House
DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center Announces Fall Art Classes \nThe McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts has announced their fall schedule of classes of experiential learning opportunities for both children and adults with some minor safety adjustments.  Registration is now underway for all upcoming classes.  All classes and policies can be found at mckinneycenter.com. \n\nDirector Theresa Hammons states\, “The pandemic took everyone by surprise this past spring and it was heartbreaking to have to cancel classes for several different reasons.”  The McKinney Center offered spring students options to take a full refund\, take a class credit\, or donate their registration fee.  “We felt that was the right thing to do\,” stated Hammons\, “people were in different situations and we felt it was only right to give people a refund for the classes that they could not take.  There were also a good number of students who donated their registration fee and we are so grateful!  Those donations along with those who donated their Art in the Park Vendor fees and their Masterpiece Mingle ticket fees helped us tremendously.”  Although the Center has been closed for most of the summer\, the staff and faculty are looking forward to starting fresh come August\, beginning with their Fall Open House on August 15\, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \n\nThe Fall Open House will give visitors a look into what classes will be offered this semester.  Visitors can socially distance while viewing class information and displays.  The McKinney Center faculty will be present for any questions potential students may have about their classes. “The Open House is a good time to meet your instructor and to really see what you will get out of taking a class here at the McKinney Center\,” states Hammons. \n\nArt\, music\, drama\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this fall for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop understanding and experiment with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and processes.  For older elementary aged students\, courses are taught to build their skills as artist\, including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level.  Classes in drama\, film\, music\, and dance are also available for this age range to include Art Adventures\, Creative Construction\, Homeschool Art\, Kids N Clay\, Young Potters\, Let’s Make a TV Show\, Anime\, Mosaics\, Ballet\, Tap\, Jazz\, Pottery\, and Guitar. \n\nOfferings for older students and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music\, and various workshops.  Director There Hammons states\, “There is something for everyone here at the McKinney Center.  Most of our classes are for beginners.  While our classes have always been small in size\, we are taking it a step further this semester and limiting the maximum number of students in our classes to 8-9 students.  For our dance classes that take place in the auditorium\, the maximum number of students will be no more than 15. So\, if you are more or less skilled\, the instructor has time to work with you one on one.” \n\nThe McKinney Center had to change their schedule of classes a bit this semester\, giving 30 minutes between classes to provide ample time for students\, faculty\, and staff to clean up and disinfect before the next class.  To do this\, a few classes had to be eliminated from the schedule\, but were replaced with more one-day workshops.  Several new workshops will be offered including mosaics\, Zentangle\, glass fusion\, pottery decorating\, soap making\, crocheting\, and even hydroponics!  The McKinney Center has also developed a few online only classes for those who prefer to take a class at home. \n\nOther changes will include supply kits for individual students rather than using shared supplies\, breaks in classes to wash hands\, continuing a strict regimen of disinfecting and cleaning the building\, and providing video options for students who miss a class due to feeling ill.  To read the McKinney Center’s complete list of policies and procedures please go to mckinneycenter.com. \n\nSave money and register early. Early registration secures a spot in class as well as a $10 discount through August 15. Individual class costs vary. The Fall Open House will be held at the McKinney Center on August 15\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be an opportunity for the public to see what the spring classes have to offer. Faculty will be present for questions and demonstrations.  The last day to register for classes is August 21\, 5 p.m. \n\nThe McKinney Center is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Staff members encourage all visitors to be at home at the McKinney Center; take a class\, participate in an exhibition\, come to a lecture\, volunteer your time\, attend a workshop\, or set up an easel on the grounds and paint.  Please check the McKinney Center Facebook page throughout the year for information about our exciting programs and events. \n\nFull descriptions of class offerings can be found online at www.mckinneycenter.com or by stopping by the McKinney Center\, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, to pick up a catalog.  For additional information contact McKinney Center Director\, Theresa Hammons at theresah@jonesboroughtn.org or call 423.753.0562.

SUMMARY:Conversations that Matter
DESCRIPTION:“Conversations that Matter” is a monthly on-line series from the McKinney Center. In each “Conversation” two local guests will explore their own culture and perspective\, and talk to each other about what makes them unique\, discover their similarities\, and explore their differences. They will look at where their lives might intersect personally and in the community. The goal of each “Conversation that Matters” is for guests and participants to hear real stories\, from real neighbors. This month’s conversation will take place via Zoom on Friday\, August 21 at 7 p.m. \n\nThe second event in the series will feature the owner and innkeeper of the Historic Eureka Inn\, McKinney Center Diversity & Inclusion committee member\, and leader of the New Generation Freedom Fighters\, Katelyn Yarbrough and Johnson City native\, salon owner\, and mother of two beautiful children\, Breanna Williamson. \n\nAs a viewer\, the focus will be on a conversation from two community members who wish to have a conversation on their own personal experiences in Northeast Tennessee. Those who attend will get to watch this conversation unfold with moderation from Katelyn Yarbrough and Michelle Treece. \n\nThis monthly series is inspired by the Diversity & Inclusion Subcommittee at the McKinney Center’s desire to highlight the experiences of all voices in Washington County\, Tennessee\, with an intention to include marginalized groups. By showcasing these conversations\, the Diversity & Inclusion committee hopes to open doors to new ideas and perspectives amongst our very own neighbors. Questions such as\, “What was your experience in grade-school and how did that make you feel?” or\, “have you experienced exclusion or racism?” For many of us the answers are different and unique. The McKinney Center believes it is time to talk about our experiences and share them. \n\nThere is value in uplifting these stories so that we may learn from one another. Then\, after hearing from one another our moderators and guest conversationalists will give insight on how to move forward. Register for the conversation by visiting mckinneycenter.com

SUMMARY:Taste of Tennessee
DESCRIPTION:What’s cooking at the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia? The organization is serving local residents a new event that highlights the history and culture of Appalachian foodways. “Taste of Tennessee” is a new virtual program that promises to bring people together to explore and celebrate Appalachian cuisine from the comfort of their homes. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic\, the event is completely online and is scheduled for Saturday\, August 22nd from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This day-long digital celebration is full of education and entertainment\, and also serves as a fundraiser for The Heritage Alliance. As part of the event\, The Heritage Alliance will present a variety of offerings via Facebook and Zoom\, including lectures\, demonstrations\, cooking classes\, and more. \n\n“When we first conceived of the idea of Taste of Tennessee\, it was envisioned as an in-person Appalachian food fair\,” says Executive Director Anne Mason. “Unfortunately\, COVID-19 has forced us to re-conceptualize the event\, but we still wanted to keep the intended spirit of the event alive.” \n\n“Our goal is to get people excited about Appalachian cuisine\, past and present\,” adds Programming Coordinator Megan Tewell. “That’s our main objective with this event—to connect people to food and to each other.” \n\nA complete program for “Taste of Tennessee” will be released shortly\, although confirmed speakers include prominent chefs\, “foodies\,” farmers\, historians\, interpreters\, to name a few. Tickets for special Zoom events are available on the Town of Jonesborough’s website. Featuring historic recipes\, techniques\, and ingredients\, as well as modern spins on Appalachian classics\, the Heritage Alliance hopes that “Taste of Tennessee” helps the public to come together around a virtual “table” and enjoy a sense of community once more. \nThe Heritage Alliance is also continuing to collect recipes for their community-curated cookbook\, as part of “Taste of Tennessee.” Do you have a favorite recipe that you would like to contribute? Please contact programming coordinator Megan Cullen Tewell at mtewell@heritageall.org in order to share. And don’t miss this exciting opportunity to learn more about our local food heritage on August 22nd— bring your appetite for Appalachia!

SUMMARY:Bristol: Step Out and Celebrate the Vote
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Rings in the Women’s Suffrage Centennial and Celebrates the Vote \nAugust 21\, 2020 (Bristol TN/VA) — On August 26th\, 2020\, the U.S. will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote and the courageous suffragists who secured access to the ballot for millions of American women. \nBristol will join in the anniversary of the 19th Amendment ratification by encouraging the Bristol community to Step Out and Celebrate the Vote on this historic day. Members of the public are invited to wear white\, ring their “justice bell” at noon\, and walk downtown Bristol commemorating the centennial anniversary. \nActivities will be held at the Bristol Train Station from 10:30 am – 3:00 pm on August 26th. Activities will include information tables from YWCA Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and Bristol Historical Association\, photo opportunities (#bristolcelebratesthevote)\, suffragists in costume\, voter registration\, as well as the 19th Amendment: Women Vote Forever 55₵ commemorative postage stamps available for sale. Masks or face coverings are requested\, and social distancing will be practiced. Updates to the event can be found by visiting the YWCA Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and Believe in Bristol Facebook pages. \nThe Birthplace of Country Music Museum is marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment in the United States with two poster exhibits –  Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence (Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service) and To Make Our Voices Heard: Tennessee Women’s Fight for the Vote (Tennessee State Museum) – on display from August 25. Votes for Women explores the complexity of the women’s suffrage movement\, including the stories of inclusion in and exclusion from the franchise and of our civic development as a nation. To Make Our Voices Heard also celebrates this story\, focusing especially on Tennessee’s dramatic vote to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1920 and the years that followed. Both exhibits are a wonderful way to learn about and celebrate this historic milestone in our nation’s history\, and they come with a variety of digital learning resources for families\, teachers and students\, and interested visitors. \nCalling all local and amateur historians! The Birthplace of Country Music Museum is also hoping to create a small display about women’s suffrage in our region. Do you have any photographs\, articles\, ephemera\, etc. related to women’s right to the vote or their exercise of that right – past or present – in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee? If so\, please get in touch with Head Curator Rene Rodgers at rrodgers@birthplaceofcountrymusic.org. \n\nSeveral downtown business windows will be decorated with posters honoring suffragists from the movement along with a Liberty and Justice Ride down State Street at noon.  “We had plans to honor the anniversary at the July 4th parade downtown and while that will still happen in 2021\, we really wanted to move forward and to be able to do something to safely celebrate this year\,” Maggie Elliott with Believe in Bristol. \n“We have even more to celebrate in our region as Tennessee played a pivotal role in the passage of the 19th Amendment as the 36th state to cast a “yea” vote passing the amendment.  It was still a long struggle for many women especially for women of color and poor women. We are grateful to those who created the path to voting rights for all!” Kathy Waugh with YWCA NETN and SWVA. \nThis year marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment\, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. For several decades suffragist leaders began their organized fight for women’s equality in 1848 as they lobbied\, marched\, picketed\, and protested for the right to the ballot until the amendment was proposed in 1878. The U.S. House of Representatives finally approved the Susan B. Anthony Amendment\, which guaranteed women the right to vote\, on May 21\, 1919. Two weeks later\, the U.S. Senate followed by voting in favor\, and the 19th Amendment went to the states\, where it had to be ratified by 3/4ths of the-then-48 states to be added to the Constitution. Tennessee became the last state needed to ratify the 19th Amendment on August 18\, 1920. The amendment was adopted on August 26\, 1920 in the form of a proclamation declaring the 19th Amendment ratified and part of the US Constitution\, forever protecting American women’s right to vote. \nToday\, more than 68 million women vote in elections because of the courageous suffragists who never gave up the fight for equality. \nSpecial thank you to volunteers and staff from YWCA NETN and SWVA\, Believe in Bristol\, Bristol Historical Association\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum\, and The Bristol Train Station who helped to make these events happen. \nFor more information visit:  www.ywcatnva.org/women-suffrage and www.believeinbristol.org/events

Or do you prefer to keep your adventures closer to home by heading to your favorite local trail? In either case wilderness navigation skills will greatly enrich your experience by giving you the confidence to successfully head into the backcountry and return home safely. Join former Army Infantry officer Scott Fisher learning the dying art of how to read a topo map and use a compass to successfully navigate in the wild. After completing the classroom portion we will move outside to apply your new skills during a mild to moderate hike in one of Northeast Tennessee’s beautiful outdoor areas. Maps and compasses provided. No experience necessary. Ages 12+. \nMap & Compass feedback: “Thoroughly enjoyed your Map Reading/Land Navigation class; great content & dynamic presentation style! SUMMARY:International Storytelling Center’s Freedom Stories “What You Don’t Know (But Should) About Appalachian Slavery"
DESCRIPTION:International Storytelling Center to Host Virtual Freedom Stories Event  \n     \n(Jonesborough\, Tenn.) – The International Storytelling Center (ISC)\, home to the world-renowned National Storytelling Festival and Storytelling Live! Teller-in-Residence series\, will host a free virtual event titled What You Don’t Know (But Should) About Appalachian Slavery on Saturday\, September 5th\, from 1-2:30 pm as part of the Freedom Stories project. \n  \nFreedom Stories is an ongoing series that illuminates the underappreciated and neglected stories of African Americans in Appalachian history and highlights the role that face-to-face storytelling has played in both African and Appalachian cultures. Through Freedom Stories virtual events\, the project marries performance and discussion\, connecting prominent African American storytellers\, artists\, humanities scholars\, and community experts to trace the rich history of African Americans in Appalachia—from the first African arrivals in Appalachia\, to the shaping of a distinct culture\, to the struggles for freedom and equality. The project will also produce multi-media resources that will be made accessible to a national audience. \n\nAs the nation learns to grapple with difficult truths\, this free public event will serve as a model for how to engage in productive discussions around complex topics. The distinguished panel will feature Frank X. Walker\, a self-identified “Affrilachian” poet and author; author and historian\, Anne Mason\, Executive Director of the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee & Southwest Virginia; West Virginia storyteller and humanities scholar\, Ilene Evans of Voices from the Earth; and Dr. Dinah Mayo-Bobee from East Tennessee State University Department of History. The panel will be moderated by ISC Freedom Stories Project Director\, Dr. Alicestyne Turley. \n\nThe live panel discussion will take place on September 5th\, from 1-2:30 pm EST on the International Storytelling Center’s Facebook timeline and will be followed by a public Q & A. The event will be recorded and made available to watch with closed-captioning post-event. \n\nAlicestyne Turley\, Director of the Freedom Stories Project states of the September Freedom Story\, “Today’s audiences have very limited\, generalized knowledge of American slavery\, a knowledge informed primarily by American entertainment media. Which of course means many audiences have even less information about Appalachia or its history of slavery. Slavery in Appalachia was like the region itself\, unique in its form and application. The September public discussion will be a brief look at this overlooked aspect of American and regional history.” \n\nKiran Singh Sirah\, President of ISC\, says these Freedom Stories discussions are important to the region in the context of the national movement of storytelling. ISC would like to thank the following organizations for their support of the Freedom Stories Project: National Association of Black Storytellers (NABS)\, Appalachian African American Cultural Center\, Black in Appalachia\, Black/White Dialogue\, Green McAdoo Cultural Center\, Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee & Southwest Virginia\, Langston Centre\, Leadership and Civic Engagement at East Tennessee State University\, McKinney Center\, Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association\, and the Town of Jonesborough. \n\nTo learn more about the International Storytelling Center and upcoming Freedom Stories programming\, please visit www.storytellingcenter.net.

SUMMARY:MOONLITE DRIVE-IN THEATRE Disney's Mary Poppins
DESCRIPTION:Based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time and the Broadway musical that played for over 2\,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Awards nominations\, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect Broadway musical at the Moonlite Drive-In! \nThe jack-of-all trades\, Bert\, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense\, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures\, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” \nDisney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com
