SUMMARY:Young Appalachian Story Summit
DESCRIPTION:The International Storytelling Center (ISC)\, home to the world-renowned National Storytelling Festival and Storytelling Live! teller-in-residence series\, is proud to announce the 2021 Young Appalachian Story Summit (YASS)\, a day-long workshop-intensive event which provides story-based leadership and civic engagement training for young adults in Appalachia\, all free of charge thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n\nYASS focuses on how young adults ages 18-25 can use storytelling as a leadership tool to help create Appalachia’s future. The theme of the 2021 Summit is Crossroads and aims to empower young Appalachians\, particularly those of historically marginalized backgrounds\, to work together and use the power of storytelling to cultivate a united voice during global unease. Summit participants will have the opportunity to hear from diverse voices within Appalachia\, to practice how storytelling can help them take action in their own communities\, and to join a collaborative network of like-minded young Appalachians for support beyond the event. The theme of Crossroads addresses the intersections of who we are and how we engage our voices with the wider community. Through workshops\, networking\, panel discussions\, and story circles\, participants will collaboratively explore their own strengths at each of these “crossroads” and develop concrete ways to use these strengths as tools in their lives and work. \n\nThe Summit will be held on August 14\, 2021 at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough\, Tennessee\, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Young adults between the ages of 18-25 and who live in the Appalachian region are welcome to register for this FREE event. While the immediate target area is Central Appalachia (e.g. Northeast Tennessee\, Southeast Kentucky\, Southwest Virginia\, and Northwest North Carolina)\, the Summit is open to all those who live and work within any of the 13 Appalachian states. More information\, including event registration\, can be accessed at https://bit.ly/3ihL1zJ. \n\nWhile 2020 saw the Summit on hold\, YASS was held in both 2018 and 2019. One past participant noted how impactful the connections were at the Summit: “I spent the day surrounded by people who encouraged one another. Over 50 people who have a desire to not only tell the stories of Appalachia\, but to do everything they can to make Appalachia better.” Another participant highlighted the power of implementing story in their life: “One of the key important things that I learned today is the importance of our stories and how in the uniqueness of our stories\, there is an element that connects us to the broader story of humanity.” \n\nThe Young Appalachian Story Summit is made possible by funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grant supported the launch of a five-year endowment-building project to culminate in an International Year of the Story during the 50th anniversary of the National Storytelling Festival. \n\nTo learn more about the International Storytelling Center and upcoming Young Appalachian Story Summit programming\, please visit www.StorytellingCenter.net.

Washington School Facebook or Instagram pages throughout the year for information about exciting programs and events.

Built by Southern Railway in 1906\, the depot had been privately leased since 1959\, but was situated on land owned by Southern successor Norfolk Southern\, who notified the building’s owners of its plans to demolish the historic structure because the lease had expired. The owners of the building gifted it to the town of Jonesborough\, and it was moved from Chuckey to Jonesborough. It now serves as a museum. Although the railroad is still prominent in Jonesborough\, the town’s depot was razed in the 1970s. \n### \nAbout the Chuckey Depot Museum: The mission of the Chuckey Depot Museum focuses on regional railroads in its exhibits\, like the Southern\, Clinchfield\, and East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. This exhibit gives the Museum a chance to showcase items that come from all over the country\, including a map of railroads in Ohio and a stock certificate for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. The Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, Tennessee\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. The Chuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 South 2nd Avenue. For more information\, please call 423.753.1010. The Depot’s regular hours are Thursday-Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society. \nAbout the Town of Jonesborough: A unique 18th century town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee\, Jonesborough’s natural beauty\, charming architecture\, and storytelling heritage have attracted visitors worldwide. Stay a day\, a week or forever\, and create your own stories in beautiful Historic Jonesborough. Visit www.jonesborough.com for more information.

SUMMARY:A Night with the Rangers
DESCRIPTION:‘A Night With Rangers’ Brings Laughs\, Brews\nBays Mountain Park visits Bays Mountain Brewing Company for comedy program \nJoin Bays Mountain Park at Bays Mountain Brewing Company next Thursday\, August 19 for “A Night with Rangers.” It’s a little like stand-up comedy\, but with real nature stories from Bays Mountain Park naturalists. \n\nRangers are a wealth of knowledge\, skills\, and stories from 50 years on the mountain. Some stories may seem to be tall talks or even a big fish story—you know\, it gets bigger each time it’s told. Enjoy a brew and listen to stories\, told by rangers both past and present. This penultimate program in the “Night with Rangers” series features Fred Hilton and Bob Culler. \n\nSee if you can distinguish a tall tale or a big fish story. Come out to Bays Mountain Brewing Company for the live conversations that start at 6:30 p.m. Bays Mountain Park will also livestream the program via its Facebook page for those unable to attend in person. \n\nEnjoy a pint of the 50th Anniversary Bays Mountain Ale too! For each pint purchased\, one dollar will go back to Bays Mountain Park. “A Night with Rangers” will be hosted one more time on Thursday\, October 21. \n\nTo learn more about Bays Mountain Park and how you can be a part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations\, go to baysmountain.com or call 423-229-9447. \n\n\nAbout Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium \nAnnually\, more than 200\,000 visitors pass through Bays Mountain Park making it one of the State of Tennessee’s Top 50 Most Visited Attractions\, according to the State of Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. One of the nation’s largest city-owned parks with 3\,550 acres\, Bays Mountain Park features roughly 40 miles of hiking trails\, a state-of-the-art planetarium\, wildlife habitats\, fun exhibits\, a 44-acre lake\, ropes course with zip line\, trails for mountain biking and much\, much more. \nAbout the City of Kingsport \nFounded in 1917\, the City of Kingsport (pop. 53\,000) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern U.S. The city is widely known as a planned community\, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3\,500-acre park\, nature preserve\, planetarium and observatory. Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” \n###
