SUMMARY:Picnicking with History
DESCRIPTION:Get close with local history on Saturday\, May 21st as the Heritage Alliance hosts “Picnicking with History” at the Embree House Historic Farm in Telford. This event will include a tour of three\, historic homes and a chance to have a picnic lunch on the grounds. Tickets include the tour\, a special\, period appropriate tasty treat at each of the houses\, and a boxed\, picnic lunch from Main Street Café. \n \nThe tour will start at the Embree House. Built in the 1790s by Seth Smith\, this stone house was the childhood home of Elihu Embree\, publisher and editor of The Emancipator\, the first periodical in the world dedicated solely to the cause of abolitionism. Guests will have a chance to tour the original great room in the house as well as the enslaved quarters in the lower level where the enslaved people worked and lived. From there\, guests will have a chance to tour portions of the Wassom House\, an 1820’s brick home that is currently being restored. The tour will conclude at the Kyker House\, a 1950’s home. It’s not every day that you get a chance to tour three different homes from three different centuries. The Embree House and the Wassom House are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Kyker House received a Preservation Award from the Heritage Alliance. \n \nThe site as a whole is managed by Patrick Stern and is used for agrotourism. The event will conclude with a picnic lunch at the Embree House on the grounds where the Indigenous Peoples once lived and a Civil War battle was fought in 1863. Please note that these are historic houses and they include stairs\, uneven ground\, and tight spaces. During lunch\, guests will have a chance to explore the grounds at the Embree House. Good walking shoes are required for this event. \n \nThere are four tour and lunch slots available on May 21st at 11:30 am\, 1:00 pm\, 2:30 pm\, and 4:00 pm. There are only 20 tickets available per slot\, so make sure you book your tickets fast. The cost is $30.00 per person. This event is a unique fundraiser for the Heritage Alliance and the proceeds will help keep our museums free to the public. You can purchase tickets online through the Town of Jonesborough’s ticketing system at Jonesborough.com/tickets. You can also call the Visitor’s Center at 423.753.1010.

SUMMARY:43rd Annual Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals
DESCRIPTION:The cast of Liberty! the Saga of Sycamore Shoals invites you to join them for their 43rd season\nof the Official Outdoor Drama of the State of Tennessee. Each year\, the Fort Watauga\namphitheater comes to life with the sights and sounds of the late 18 th century on the colonial\nfrontier. \nNationally significant events that helped to shape the future of our nation before\, during\, and\nafter the American Revolution are presented in an engaging\, exciting\, and entertaining fashion.\nThe Watauga Association\, formed in 1772\, was widely recognized as the first continental\ngovernment that was “free and independent” of the British Crown\, designed to provide for law\nand order and the right of every free man to vote. In 1774\, Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore\ncalled it a “dangerous example” to form a government “distinct from and independent of his\nmajesty’s authority.” Later\, the area was annexed by North Carolina and became known as the\nWashington District\, named in honor of General George Washington\, who was leading the fight\nfor American Independence at the time. \nIn 1775\, The Treaty of Sycamore Shoals took place at the Watauga “Old Fields” where Judge\nRichard Henderson and other land speculators purchased 20 million acres of land from the\nCherokee. This negotiation sparked a series of Cherokee attacks on the pioneers of the\nWatauga and surrounding settlements a year later. \nLiberty! is set in front of the full-scale replica of Fort Watauga\, which was used to defend the\nsettlement against attacks from a faction of the Cherokee\, led by Chief Dragging Canoe\, who\nopposed the sale. Ultimately\, the settlement was successful in staving off the attack and siege\nof the fort. \nSycamore Shoals also served as the gathering place for the Overmountain Men\, who were an\nessential part of a broader militia that defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his British force at\nthe Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. That event is often noted as a major turning point for the\nAmerican Revolution. \nLiberty! tells the stories of these important days of American history as well as demonstrating\nthe life of pioneers in a frontier settlement. Moreover\, it gives faces to the names we see on\nmany of our street signs and other local area designations. For example\, we meet John Sevier\,\nwho went on to become the first Governor of Tennessee. We are also introduced to John\nCarter\, and his son Landon\, both of whom are reflected in the full name of the Carter Mansion\,\nthe oldest frame house in the state. It’s preserved by Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and\nFriends of Sycamore Shoals. \nThe amazing strength and skills of the local pioneer women are far from neglected in the\ndrama. Mary Patton\, who learned the art of manufacturing gun powder from her father\,\nprovided the Overmountain Men with a minimum of 500 pounds of gunpowder for their foray\ninto North Carolina in search of British Major Patrick Ferguson. \nWe also encounter Catherine “Bonnie Kate” Sherrill\, a lively lass who was caught outside the\nfort during the siege attack\, and was rescued by Sevier\, whom she later married. While\nTiptonville was the original name of Elizabethton\, as part of the State of Franklin\, it was later\nrenamed for Landon's wife\, Elizabeth MacLin Carter\, who also appears in the drama.\nThis is only a partial list of fascinating local contributors to regional and national history\, and\nputting the play on is quite an undertaking. It features professional lighting and sound\, a well-\nmaintained amphitheater\, as well as a cast\, crew\, and production team of nearly 100 local\nactors in speaking and extra roles. \nLiberty runs weekends in June beginning Fridays and Saturdays – June 3 & 4 and June 10 & 11;\nThursdays\, Fridays\, & Saturdays\, June 16\, 17\, & 18 and 23\, 24\, & 25 in the Fort Watauga\nAmphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN. \nGeneral admission tickets range from Free for Children 5 and under; to $8.00 for Students 6 to\n17 years; $14.00 for Seniors 55 and up; and $19.00 for Adults. Members of Friends of Sycamore\nShoals\, Veterans\, and First Responders may attend the drama any night for a reduced\nadult/senior admission price of $10.00. \nOnline Ticket Sales- www.TheLibertyDrama.com or you can purchase tickets at the door until all\nseats are sold. \nThe production of Liberty! is supported by Friends of Sycamore Shoals each season. Please\nsupport this vital organization and become a member to help support the Liberty drama\, as well\nas a host of other educational park activities that take place throughout the year.\nDon’t be one of the many who say “I’ve heard about it\, but never gone.” And\, if you’ve seen it\,\nyou’re most welcome to come again. Our script is always changing and is sure to keep you on\nthe edge of your seats! Support your local history educators and preservationists; come learn \nabout our history in a fun and entertaining context\, and spread the word. We’ll see you at the\nOld Fields! \nAdditional Information:\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park\n1651 W. SUMMARY:We Did it Together Community Play
DESCRIPTION:We Did It Together is the new original StoryTown community play which will have its premier at the McKinney Center on June 3 at 7:30 PM. \n\nSet in the mid-twentieth century in Jonesborough\, Tennessee\, We Did It Together weaves compelling true-life stories in a new original play with show-stopping music and dance. The play focuses on ordinary people of this small community who accomplish remarkable feats as they are caught in extraordinary times. Teenage girls called to serve in the Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII; a doctor and his family in Cuba forced to flee as Castro’s rebel’s take over\, leading them to find freedom in Northeast Tennessee; the election of Ernest McKinney\, the first African American Alderman to serve in Jonesborough; a historic home filled with otherworldly guests\, and the famous Rambo cattle drive on Greenwood Drive and Spring Street. We Did It Together explores the ways that the families and neighborhoods in this small Appalachian community have come together to accomplish great things. \n\nThis play is the fourth in a series of original community plays at the McKinney Center written by playwright Jules Corriere\, who this month won and placed in eight international film festivals\, including taking first place at the Hollywood Just 4 Shorts Screenplay Competition and is a finalist in the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards.
