SUMMARY:A Victorian Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Can you imagine life more than a hundred years ago? In our lifetimes\, technology has boomed\, information travels faster than transportation and if we can want it\, many of us can have it. And for some\, Christmas becomes the fastest\, and in many instances\, the most hectic of times. \n  \nBut there is a way to slow things down\, at least for an evening and savor the Holiday season. Many of our most cherished Christmas traditions have their origin in the Victorian era. Christmas trees\, Christmas cards\, Holiday parties\, even the purchase of gifts all date back to the time of Queen Victoria. The advance of the Industrial Revolution made the commercialization of Christmas possible\, certainly\, but the wealth it generated also helped to create the middle class who for the first time were able to take a couple of days off of work\,  visit family\, enjoy fellowship and embrace the spirit of the time. \n  \nAs many of the Christmas traditions we love have their origins in the Victorian Era\, what better place to enjoy them than in Historic Jonesborough’s Victorian setting?  The Colors of Christmas Holiday Dinner highlights these traditions\, featuring some of Jonesborough’s most historic buildings\, costumed interpreters\, and an elegant meal. \nThe Colors of Christmas Holiday Dinner kicks off the Holiday Season in style. In Jonesborough\, the Colors of Christmas is all about experiencing a Victorian Style Christmas celebration\, just right for family and friends. Mantles are draped in freshly cut greenery; fruit\, feathers and garland lend color and cheer.  An entire team of volunteers spend months researching décor and work for days to craft just the right touches to enhance the Holiday mood. \n  \nRooms are decorated just as they would have been a hundred years ago with boughs of holly\, cedar trees\, and fresh cut greens of all sorts. Garlands are hand crafted together from spruce\, hemlock\, magnolia\, nandina\, ivy\, and many more of nature’s winter gems. Stringed cranberries provide pops of colors on the mantels\, as do bushels of berries tucked in here and there amongst the greens. A long standing symbol of good cheer\, human warmth and family affection\, the pineapple sets at the center of the mantel\, letting all who enter the dwelling know they are welcome. The cedar tree stands watch in the corner\, draped with popcorn garlands and filled with an array of ornaments. \n  \nIn the Victorian era\, many ornaments were handmade from fabric\, wood\, and other such materials. Paper chains adorned trees and hearth alike. Store bought ornaments were available\, though\, and quickly began to fill trees with their blown glass elegance. Glass ornaments could be purchased at a local store or ordered through a catalog. The same could be said of Christmas presents. Many were handmade\, but companies like Sears & Roebuck distributed toys from their catalogs across the nation. Presents were kept under the tree\, but many were also tucked inside the tree\, a surprise to be discovered through treasure hunt on Christmas day. \n  \nChristmas cards were also tucked into trees and displayed throughout the house. Another key element of a Victorian Christmas tree was the live candles\, flickering on the boughs. Many families did not put up their tree until Christmas Eve\, but the danger of live flame on a freshly cut tree remained. This is a tradition we leave in the past\, but the decorated cedar still stands proudly in the corner of the room\, ready to participate in the merriment. \n  \nHoliday parties\, as made popular by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol\, featured fun and frivolity. There were parties for specific age groups\, such as children and young adults. The most popular of all were family parties with guests of all ages. These parties centered on food and entertainment. They usually included music and often times games. The parties were about connection\, a celebration of family and friends. These parties were also a great opportunity to make new friends and acquaintances. Celebrations typically continued from Christmas Day through the Twelve Days of Christmas\, ending with the celebration of the Epiphany in early January. \n  \nThe spirit of a Victorian Christmas celebration is alive and well on the evening of December 1st in downtown Jonesborough. \n  \nGuests are greeted at the door of a beautifully restored building by a Victorian couple in their finest\, festive attire. Wisps of conversation float through the air as guest help themselves to appetizers and enjoy the festive atmosphere. After a while\, guests move on to yet another beautifully restored building and enjoy conversation with yet another finely attired Victorian couple.  More time to visit with friends both old and new while enjoying a warm cup of soup\, and then it’s off in a bus reserved just for diners to the McKinney Center for the Arts\, where a full meal awaits. Featuring live seasonal music softly playing in the background\, diners enjoy additional Holiday décor. And when dessert is served\, the Jonesborough Novelty Band takes the stage for a rousing sing-a-long! At the end of the evening\, we return you downtown. \n  \nFor more than forty years\, the Heritage Alliance has offered a progressive dinner to ring in the season.  As guests move from location to location\, you feel a sense of comradery develop. New friendships are forged and old friendships are renewed. And it is all for a good cause. The event is the main fundraiser for the Heritage Alliance\, a not for profit heritage education and preservation organization based in Tennessee’s Oldest Town. The Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. \nEver wondered what’s behind the grand historic homes of Jonesborough? Here’s your chance for a once in a lifetime sneak peek to find out. The tour portion spotlights the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region. Each location on the tour has a unique story rich with history. The sounds of the season with live music will fill various locations throughout the tour. The tour takes place from 3 to 7 p.m. and there will be a shuttle continually running the route. \n  \nCome home to Jonesborough for the holidays and take part in the Colors of Christmas on December 1. The Dinner is $85 and seating times are available at 4:30 or 7 p.m. Secure your reservations for a Holiday respite to the past today. The tour is $15 and takes place from 3 to 7pm. SUMMARY:Christmas in the Country at Exhange Place
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Exchange Place will ring in the holidays\, and the winter season\, for young and old alike with its annual Christmas in the Country celebration on Saturday\, December 1\, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at Kingsport’s historic Living History Farm\, located at 4812 Orebank Road. There is no admission fee for this final public event of the year at the tradition-rich farmstead\, proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nChristmas in the Country features fresh greenery and trees\, handcrafted wreaths and other seasonal decorations to give your home that special holiday cheer. Unique folk arts and crafts will be found on both sides of Orebank Road\, including pottery\, handmade greeting cards\, unique soaps\, stained glass creations\, vintage clothing\, wood working and painting\, paper quilling\, glass artwork\, and jewelry. Your taste buds will be tempted with scrumptious breads\, granolas and other baked goods. \nActivities for the young’uns will be found in several locales throughout the grounds\, but children of all ages are always excited to meet our resident animals. Our horses\, cow and donkey will be found in the 1851 barn\, while the sheep can be seen in different farmstead locations. \nBut most especially\, Christmas in the Country furthers the mission of Exchange Place by demonstrating a slice of pre-Civil War wintertime farm life in our region\, and showing how our ancestors would have prepared for the holidays. Over in the blacksmith shop\, the skills that were needed to make hardware and tools for the farm\, fix wagon wheels and\, of course\, shoe the horses\, will be demonstrated throughout the day by acclaimed young artisan Catherine Shook Hendershot. In the log kitchen\, the Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society will be preparing dishes that the wealthy Gaines and Preston families might have enjoyed during the holidays\, like roast pork and cinnamon waffles.\nIn the newly restored outdoor bake oven\, they will be baking ginger cakes (cookies)\, using a Gaines family\nrecipe\, and replicas of Preston family tin cookie cutters. \nIn the Cook’s Cabin\, our Junior Apprentices will be demonstrating beloved holiday traditions such as\npopping popcorn\, trimming an old-fashioned Christmas tree\, and decorating the yule log that will be burned\nat the close of the event. The Junior Apprentices\, in fact\, will be quite visible throughout the farmstead\,\nhelping with the food preparation\, performing a variety of chores\, and selling their own handmade crafts\nand decorations in the Schoolhouse. \nThe Yule Log Ceremony\, a community tradition\, will be held near the Cook’s Cabin beginning around\n4:15 pm\, and will conclude the day’s festivities. Originated by the Vikings\, it served as a way for them to\nhonor their gods and request good luck in the coming year. Later it was incorporated into the harvest\nfestivals of Germany and Scandinavia\, then moved to England when the Normans conquered the isles\, and\neventually was brought to the New World by the Pilgrims. While the Preston family may not have burned a\nYule Log\, we like to make it a part of our Christmas in the Country as a symbol of peace and good will for \nour wonderful community. Since it was often decorated with evergreens and sometimes sprinkled with\ngrain or cider before it was finally lit\, we encourage everyone to bring a sprig to cast onto the fire\, and also\nto wear fine\, colorful headgear to the event\, which will conclude with the singing of carols and\, of course\, a\ncup of hot wassail! Derived from the Anglo-Saxon “waes hael\,” which meant “Be in Health” or “Here’s to\nYou\,” wassail helps us to emphasize the spirit of health and friendship. \nFor more information\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, or write to\nemail@exchangeplace.info . \nExchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of mid-\nnineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit organization maintained\nand operated by volunteers and is supported by donations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants.

SUMMARY:Rocky Mount Candlelight Christmas
DESCRIPTION:ROCKY MOUNT STATE HISTORIC SITE’S “A CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS” TO OCCUR FRIDAYS AND SATURDAYS NOVEMBER 30TH & DECEMBER 1ST AND DECEMBER 7TH & DECEMBER 8TH.\nNOTE TO MEDIA: Rocky Mount Staff believe that this is a potential feature story. Interpreters are available for interviews on site or in studio. In addition\, please note that on Monday\, Nov. 26th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rocky Mount will be decorating the historic site in preparation for Christmas tours. \nROCKY MOUNT’S “A CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS”: A STEP BACK IN TIME.\nThe Christmas season seems to start earlier and earlier every year. The Christmas celebration of today is highly commercialized. Rocky Mount State Historic Site’s “A Candlelight Christmas” tours are a chance to look back at a simpler time and experience a simpler celebration – when people did not count down the shopping days until Christmas and when Christmas advertisements and reminders did not go up in October. Candlelight Christmas takes you to Christmas Eve of 1791. It is an evening with the Cobb family showing you their home and sharing their holiday traditions with you. You will take candle-lit walks through the buildings filled with handmade decorations of greenery as it would have been in 1791. \n“A Candlelight Christmas” is a new way to come and see an old favorite. This tour is completely different from our daily tour and captures a different side of life in 1791. Come feel the warmth of the fire on your skin and the warmth of the season in your heart. Start a new tradition this year by attending our “A Candlelight Christmas” tour. \nTours begin at 4:30 p.m. each day (Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st & Dec. 7th and 8th) and leave the Massengill Museum every fifteen minutes with the last tour going out at 8:00 p.m. Guests will travel outside to get to the historic home and other buildings so make sure to dress for the weather. The tour lasts approximately an hour and a half and costs $12 for adults and $8 receive a fifty percent discount. Reservations are strongly encouraged\, although walk-in visitors are welcome. Group rates are available for groups of twelve or more people. In order to receive group rates\, reservations are required. Reservations are now being taken. To make a reservation or for more information\, call (423) 538-7396 or 888-538-1791. \n*********\nRocky Mount is a State-Owned Historic Site operated by the Rocky Mount Historical Association under an agreement with the Tennessee Historical Commission\, Department of Environment & Conservation.\nRocky Mount is a living history museum which uses first-person interpretation to portray people living in 1791. The Site is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am until 5 pm with the last tour leaving the Massengill Museum by 4 pm. Living history tours and the facility are available by reservation at any time\, including Sundays and Mondays for schools and other groups\, with advance reservations. For more information\, call (423) 538-7396 or visit our website at www.rockymountmuseum.com.

SUMMARY:Holiday Soup and Songs
DESCRIPTION:Holiday Soup and Songs: A McKinney Center Fundraiser \n  \nWhere can you get dinner\, a show\, and take home a one-of-a-kind\, hand-made creation\, all while helping a worthwhile cause?  Holiday Soup and Songs- the McKinney Center’s annual fundraiser! \nKick off the Holiday Season on November 26th\, 2018 at 6pm at the McKinney Center\, 103 Franklin Ave.\, Jonesborough\, with the Jonesborough Yarn Exchange and the Jonesborough Novelty Band in their annual Christmas Caroling Sing-Along.  This year’s show is perfectly seasoned\, as audience and cast sing together a collection of favorite Christmas Carols that are sprinkled lightly with holiday stories. All who attend will receive a song book so they may sing along to every holiday tune\, including classic standards as well as newer songs borne from the Appalachian region to include “I Wonder as I Wander.” The Yarn Exchange cast will shed light on how some of these carols came to be\, while Terry Countermine and the Novelty Band take audiences on a sentimental musical journey. \nBefore this journey begins\, guests will enter the front doors to a dazzling display of one hundred and fifty one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic bowls\, all created by more than a dozen different local potters\, as well as community volunteers during several “community bowl-making days” held at the McKinney Center. These beautiful bowls\, which will be on display prior to the show\, are an art exhibit of their own. From hand-built to wheel thrown\, and every color glaze imaginable\, there is a style and color to fit everyone’s home. Once audience members walk through the display\, they get to choose their favorite bowl\, and then move on to where the real fun begins. \n  \nAfter choosing their own unique bowl\, guests will continue into the banquet hall to encounter an all-you-can-eat home-made soup buffet. Half a dozen different soups will be available\, including gluten-free and vegetarian\, all prepared by local gourmet cooks. Main Street Café will be providing two of these delicious home-made soups. Guests may try one or all of the different flavors. Also on the menu will be a fresh green salad with vegetables. \n  \nThe sing-along will begin after dinner\, while guests enjoy a cup of coffee from the Corner Cup Coffee Shop and a delicious dessert. From the stories to the bowls to the music to the food\, this entire event is locally made. The warm\, family atmosphere will let you know that the Christmas Season has indeed begun. \nTickets are only $25\, and will support two local entities: The Jonesborough Yarn Exchange Radio Show and the McKinney Center’s outreach program. The Jonesborough Yarn Exchange is dedicated to collecting and sharing Jonesborough’s rich cultural heritage and stories through a monthly radio show presented at the International Storytelling Center and broadcast on local NPR station WETS 89.5 and online at wets.org on HD Channel 1. The McKinney Center is dedicated to providing excellent instruction in the arts to adults and children by the region’s finest artist-teachers. Two great causes are benefitted in one fun event. \n  \nGuests may purchase tickets online at bit.ly/soupandsongs or by calling the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center at (423) 753-1010\, or by visiting in person.
