SUMMARY:Hear ‘Campfire Tales’ at Bays Mountain Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild every Friday in September \n\nSeptember 3\, 10\, 17 and 24\n 7 p.m.\nBays Moutain Park \n\nEveryone gather around the campfire and let Bays Mountain Park tell you a tale. This September\, visit the Bays Mountain Amphitheater for “Campfire Tales\,” a free storytelling event sponsored by Knoxville TVA Credit Union. \nEach Friday night of the month\, BMP welcomes tellers from Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild\, who belong to one of the oldest continuing groups of storytellers in the nation. You’ll hear two exciting stories each night\, with a different lineup of tellers every Friday. \n“’ Campfire Tales’ is one of the most exciting events in our 50th Anniversary lineup\,” said Bays Mountain Park Manager Rob Cole. “We hope families and folks of all ages will come up to enjoy a great night at the park.” \n For more than 50 years\, and even well beyond that by those early settlers and families who lived here\, Bays Mountain’s history has been filled with storytellers spinning yarns about topics related to mountain living in the olden days or\, more recently\, tales about animals found throughout our region or even the wonders found in the night skies above us. \n Today\, as educational interpreters\, BMP park naturalists and astronomy staff have developed wonderful storytelling skills to the benefit of thousands of students and visitors who come to the park seeking to grow their knowledge in any of those areas. \n“We have a rich tradition of storytelling on Bays Mountain\,” Cole said. “So it seems very fitting to have Jonesborough’s Storytellers at the park for some good\, ol’ fashioned\, creative fun as told by those who do it best.” \n“Campfire Tales” begins at 7 p.m. on September 3\, 10\, 17 and 24. This program is free with park entry\, and each night will last about an hour and a half. The first 50 kids will receive swag bags\, and Knoxville TVA Credit Union will give out lanterns while supplies last. \n The amphitheater is bench seating\, and you are welcome to bring stadium chairs for your comfort. Bag/lawn chairs and outside food/drink are not allowed. \n The Jonesborough Storyteller’s Guild have told stories live every Tuesday night in Jonesborough for over 25 years. After a year on Zoom\, they are now back to live performances. You can find information on their shows on their website at storytellersguild.org or by calling 423-730-8977. Tellers are available for private shows and events.  \nTo learn more about Bays Mountain Park\, visit baysmountain.com or call 423-229-9447.

SUMMARY:Marsha Honeycutt Marcela Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, September 3rd\, the historic Oak Hill School will host author Marsha Honeycutt Marcela from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. The Appalachian author will be signing copies of her book Mr. Rigney\, Rigney\, and Me (. . .or is it “I”) about her mentor Mr. George Rigney. Copies of the book will be available for $10.00. Mr. Rigney started his long teaching career in a one room schoolhouse\, so it’s only fitting Marcela bring his story to Oak Hill School. \n\nWho was Mr. Rigney\, though\, and why was his closest companion a domesticated wolf? How does a man who didn’t finish but one year of high school start teaching English in a one-room schoolhouse at the age of 17? These questions and more are answered in her touching biography. Proceeds from the book benefit the George D. Rigney Memorial Scholarship Fund which continues to help students to this day. \n\nThe book signing is a part of the Jonesborough Genealogical Society’s Heritage Fair which takes place in Jonesborough on September 3rd and 4th. Oak Hill School will also be open for tours on Saturday\, September 4th from 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm\, but the book signing will be Friday only. Oak Hill School educated students in the Knob Creek Community from 1886-1952. It was moved to Jonesborough in the 1990s and today it continues to welcome students through the Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program. For more information on Oak Hill School\, visit the Heritage Alliance’s website at heritageall.org. \n\nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences.  For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information can also be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/.

Her blues classroom was on the porch of her uncle’s house where she heard guitar and harmonica playing. Her first professional engagement came in the early 1980s when she was asked to perform at a local club where she was attending college. “I had three days to find three musicians and put together 30 songs\,” she said. “They loved me – the rest is history because I’ve been singing the Blues ever since.” \nFor years\, Pat sang in New Orleans six nights a week\, performing at a wide array of venues including the House of Blues\, until Katrina destroyed her home. She relocated to North Carolina and has recently started touring with the Music Maker Blues Revue. During her performances\, “Mother Blues” unfurls the tapestry of her life experiences to her audience in soulful words and music.  She shares the mettle\, pathos and ocean-deep compassion of the famous female blues singers she idolizes – women like Billie Holiday\, Koko Taylor and Etta James. \nPat “Mother Blues” Cohen is a dramatic and exotic performer whose talent should not be overlooked.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
