SUMMARY:Kingsport: Foam Party
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its first-ever Foam Party at the V.O. Dobbins\, Sr. Complex Field on August 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. \nThe event is free and open to all ages. Parks & Rec officials recommend you bring a towel and wear a swim suit or clothes you don’t mind getting wet. The Kingsport Splash Pad will also be open during the Foam Party. \nA Foam Party is just like it sounds – a foam machine will fill the V.O. Dobbins field with a thick mountain of clean\, refreshing foam while energetic\, family-friendly music plays in the background by a DJ. \nChildren will be able to run through the foam\, build forts or snowmen and make oversized hairdos and beards with the foam. Adults can join in the fun\, dance along to the music or take selfies with their foam-covered children or grandchildren. \n“We had a foam machine at one of our summer camps this year and the kids just loved it\,” said Program Administrator Renee Ensor. “So we thought\, why not have a larger event and invite the entire community to come out and enjoy.” \nFor more information about the event contact Renee Ensor at 423-224-2489. \nAbout Kingsport Parks and Recreation \nKingsport Parks and Recreation is improving quality of life by offering essential services and recreation opportunities for the community of the City of Kingsport. They provide facilities\, programs and recreational experiences that are available to residents and visitors. Kingsport Parks and Recreation makes sure community members have places to play\, get fit and stay healthy\, as well as opportunities to foster new relationships and forge a connection with nature. \nAbout the City of Kingsport \nFounded in 1917\, the City of Kingsport (pop. 55\,400) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern U.S. The city is widely known as a planned community\, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3\,650-acre park\, nature preserve\, planetarium and observatory. Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” \n#

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: Scott Snapp
DESCRIPTION:PARAMOUNT BRISTOL PRESENTS\n\n\n\nScott Stapp\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFri\, August 5\, 2022\n\n\nDoors: 7:00 pm / Show: 8:00 pm\n\n\n$37 – $90 plus applicable taxes and fees / Members save at least $5 per ticket\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\nCREED front man Scott Stapp’s fighting spirit is well documented. He endured childhood trauma\, fled home as a teen\, supported himself\, formed a band. Against the odds\, Creed burst into popular consciousness in 1997 with MY OWN PRISON and would dominate rock radio throughout the early 2000’s. Followed by the Diamond-certified HUMAN CLAY (1999)\, WEATHERED (2002) and FULL CIRCLE (2009)\, Creed sold over 50 million albums\, broke airplay records\, sold out arenas\, and won a Grammy for “With Arms Wide Open.”  Eventually\, the Grammy winning songwriter embarked on a solo career.  As a solo artist\, Stapp released PROOF OF LIFE (2013) and THE GREAT DIVIDE (2005). Rolling Stone wrote\, Stapp is “a singer with an enormous emotional range and a composer of startling originality.” Yet\, despite his success\, the unresolved traumas of his past\, depression\, and addiction began to overshadow his gifts. Stapp’s health deteriorated and his personal and professional relationships were in jeopardy.  Fast forward to 2019 when Stapp released his 1st album in six years. THE SPACE BETWEEN THE SHADOWS is a driving\, propulsive celebration of overcoming throughout his life.  It debuted in the Top 5 and Top 10 on album charts in the U.S. and UK.  As someone who has received the help of others\, Scott Stapp is a mentor to those who still struggle and\, in gratitude\, he ‘pays it forward’ through his own With Arms Wide Open Foundation\, which helps military vets and their families with issues of drug addiction\, PTSD-triggered mental health issues and suicide prevention. His efforts were applauded in 2017 when the Florida Association of Broadcasters gave him the Florida Service Award and in 2018\, he was inducted into the Florida Music Hall of Fame.  It will be awesome to have Scott rockin’ out at Paramount Bristol.

In early 2020\, his main stage performance as part of the popular Country2Country festival in Europe was cut short by the pandemic. After that\, for over a year during lockdown\, he entertained fans virtually with his weekly FacebookLive Quarantine Livestream that to-date has drawn almost 1.5 million total views. Gradually\, he has been able to resume live performances\, most notably on the Grand Ole Opry\, where he has made almost 150 appearances to-date\, and he has been excited to reconnect with more live audiences as he takes to the road. He was excited to recently open at The Ryman for Deanna Carter! \nIn his adopted hometown of Nashville\, Esten serves as the National Honorary Spokesperson for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual “Light The Night” Walk\, and as a board member and volunteer for Musicians On Call. When not filming or touring\, he continues to write and record his own music with over 10 million streams to date\, and a 2018 Guinness World Record for releasing 54 original songs (available on iTunes\, and on Spotify) once a week\, for 54 consecutive weeks. He is currently working selecting some of that new music for release\, and has one due out May 6th. Regarding his new single\, WORST DAY – a duet with Julia Cole (CMT Next Women of Country\, Class of ‘2) – Esten says\, “This song is a flat-out upbeat banger about the joy of having that someone you love right there beside you in the good times\, and even more especially\, in the hard times too!”

SUMMARY:Roan Mountain Fall Naturalists Rally
DESCRIPTION:SIXTIETH ANNUAL \n Roan Mountain \nFall Naturalists Rally \nSEPT. 9 – SEPT. 11\, 2022 \n Featured Speakers:  \n FRIDAY EVENING PROGRAM: Kelby Ouchley \n“Atop Your Mountain\, Along My Bayou – Seeking the Connections” \n SATURDAY EVENING PROGRAM: Dr. Arthur J. Merschat \n“The August 9\, 2020\, Mw 5.1 Earthquake in Sparta\, North Carolina and Blue Ridge Geology” \n  \n FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: \nRally Directors; Gary Barrigar and Larry McDaniel \nfriendsofroan@gmail.com \n  \nTO REGISTER GO TO FRIENDS OF ROAN MOUNTAIN WEBSITE: \nhttps://www.friendsofroanmtn.org \nor \nMAIL PREPAID RESERVATIONS TO: \nNancy Barrigar\, Treasurer \n708 Allen Avenue \nElizabethton\, TN 37643 \nSponsored by: \nThe Friends of Roan Mountain \n  \nFRIDAY EVENING PROGRAM: \n“Atop Your Mountain\, Along My Bayou – Seeking the Connections” \n Kelby Ouchley is a biologist and writer and managed National Wildlife Refuges for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for 30 years.  Since 1995 he has written and narrated Bayou-Diversity\, an award-winning weekly conservation program on public radio.  He produces a popular Facebook blog titled Bayou-Diversity (https://www.facebook.com/BayouDiversity). His six published books include a historical novel\, natural histories of Louisiana\, a comprehensive book on alligators\, and a dictionary for naturalists.  LSU Press will release his latest book\, Bayou D’Arbonne Swamp – A Naturalist’s Memoir of Place\, in September. Kelby has received the Louisiana Governor’s Conservationist of the Year award\, the Caroline Dorman Master Naturalist’s Lifetime Achievement Award\, and the Louisiana Ornithological Society’s lifetime achievement award. With his wife\, Amy\, he lives on the edge of the Bayou D’Arbonne Swamp near Rocky Branch\, Louisiana\, in a cypress house surrounded by white oaks and black hickories. \nProgram Description: \nWithin the field of natural history\, the concept of connections – links between plants or animals and their habitat is often emphasized.  My focus in this talk though is our connections to the natural world and how naïve we as a modern society have become in regard to these life-sustaining links. As a species and as individuals there is little we do that does not impact other living things by affecting connections.  Using examples pertinent to this venue at Roan Mountain and my home along a Louisiana bayou\, I will illustrate that “we don’t yet know what we don’t know” about how important it is to maintain robust biodiversity and naturally functioning ecosystems for our own well-being. \nSATURDAY EVENING PROGRAM: \n“The August 9\, 2020\, Mw 5.1 Earthquake in Sparta\, North Carolina and Blue Ridge Geology” \n Dr. Arthur J. Merschat is a Research Geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and an adjunct Research Professor at Appalachian State University.  As co-project chief of the USGS Piedmont and Blue Ridge Project\, Arthur’s primary research goal is to create detailed geologic maps\, with a special interest in complexly deformed crystalline rocks. He has spent more than two decades studying the structure and tectonics of the Appalachians and has worked on geologic mapping projects in the southern Appalachians (Blue Ridge and Inner Piedmont)\, New England\, and Adirondacks.  He is part of a collaborative research group investigating the Sparta\, NC earthquake and the Little River fault.  His research is supported the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program and Earthquake Hazards Program. \nProgram Description: \nThe August 9\, 2020\, Mw 5.1 Sparta\, North Carolina earthquake produced the first documented co-seismic surface rupture in the eastern U.S.—the Little River fault. Our research into this earthquake documents nearly 4 km of co-seismic surface rupture\, older brittle faults oriented similar to surface rupture\, and soft-sediment deformation in alluvium from several locations. This presentation highlights connections between the Sparta\, NC earthquake\, existing brittle faults\, paleosiesmicity\, and landscape evolution in the Blue Ridge. \n  \nFRIDAY September 9: All activities take place at Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center. \n  5:30 PM   REGISTRATION \n   7:30 PM  PROGRAM   \n      “Atop Your Mountain\, Along My Bayou – Seeking the Connections” Kelby Ouchley \n 9:00 PM  Moth Party (E\, Kf) Larry McDaniel \n  \nSATURDAY September 10: Unless otherwise noted\, field \ntrips will carpool (Cp) from the field adjacent to the cabin \narea entrance. \n  \n   8:30 AM  Field trips: \n\n Birds (E) Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter TOS\n\n  \n\n Wildflowers (E) Guy Mauldin\n\n  \n\n Useful Plants (A\, Kf) Marty Silver\n\n  \n\n Mushrooms (E) Cindy Fowler & Ken Crouse\n\n  \n\n Spiders (E\, Kf) T.
