Dr. Daryl Carter\, director of the Black American Studies program at East Tennessee State University (ETSU)\, and Jules Corriere with the McKinney Center will moderate the Q&A session following the presentations. \nParticipants can register for the event through the McKinney Center’s website at McKinneyCenter.com. Participants must register in advance to receive the Zoom link. \nOver 100 million visitors come to Tennessee each year\, and the state typically earns over 20 billion dollars in revenue from tourists. The Useable Past Series continues to explore the opportunities that exist in local communities to meet the needs of tourists\, achieve the revenue and interpretive goals at historic and cultural institutions\, and create an environment where visitors feel safe and represented. \nIn historic Northeast Tennessee\, heritage tourism is a large part of why people travel: they want to know their history. However\, this is a field that has struggled to be inclusive and welcoming to visitors of all backgrounds. Turner\, retired professor and podcast host of “Sepia Tones.” The panelists will also participate in a question-and-answer session after their presentations. \nPresenters for this session\, Useable Past\, Folx Song: An Inclusive Look at Appalachian Music will specifically focus on showcasing efforts and examples in Northeast Tennessee and the surrounding region pertaining to inclusive tourism\, difficulties faced\, as well as action steps all organizations can take to continue to move forward as a region in providing more inclusive interpretations. This specific session aims to focus on the music and music history of our region and how to include many narratives in this imperative part of Appalachian culture. \nThis workshop series is a collaboration between several organizations including the McKinney Center\, the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia\, the Langston Centre and the Black American Studies program at ETSU. The McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School provides a comprehensive program through Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts which teaches various art skills to all participants through a quality program of instruction open to all segments of Jonesborough’s population. The Heritage Alliance is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. The Langston Centre is a cultural facility that promotes multicultural awareness and workforce development through arts\, education\, and leadership activities. The Black American Studies program serves a critical role for the College of Arts & Sciences and ETSU by offering high-quality academic course offerings\, superb programming\, and opportunities for personal growth through service. \nMore information can be found on the Useable Past Facebook page or at McKinneyCenter.com. \n### \nAbout the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington: The mission of the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington is to provide a comprehensive program through Jonesborough’s Mary B. SUMMARY:Jonesborough Flag Retirement Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Jonesborough’s Flag Committee along with the Daniel Boone High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC retires more than 2\,000 American Flags from the region in a ceremonial fashion following codes set forth by the National Flag Foundation. \nThe Town’s American Flag Retirement Ceremony will take place on Sunday\, October 27 at 2 p.m. in the Jonesborough Post Office Parking lot. The ceremony will include a keynote address by Tom Pardue. Following the keynote\, the Daniel Boone Junior ROTC will conduct the official retirement of American flags that have been torn\, faded\, replaced and are no longer in use. A Congressional Research Service report to Congress found the Flag Code specifies that flags be destroyed in a dignified way\, preferably by burning. Flags to be retired are folded in the traditional triangular form. \n“The flags are properly burned on a bed of hickory coals and the ashes are then buried\,” Town Flag Committee Chair Ruth Verhegge said. Flag drop off boxes are located at the Jonesborough Post Office\, David Crockett High School and the Food City located in Gray.

SUMMARY:Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park: Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park
DESCRIPTION:Autumn is in full swing. As both the temperature and the leaves continue to fall\, we begin to think of the many holiday festivities that wait in the coming days. Over two hundred years ago it was quite the same for the early frontier settlers. On Saturday\, November 12 from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday\, November 13 from 10:00 to 3:00 Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will become the scene of a Frontier Harvest Celebration as we enjoy a time of friendship\, thanksgiving\, and recognition of our patriot ancestors. \nIn Colonial America\, before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday\, each colony or community observed days of thanksgiving usually after the harvest had been brought in or after a significant military victory. Join the Washington County Militia\, host living history organization at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park\, for their monthly militia muster and a colonial “Harvest Home” as they celebrate the Overmountain Men’s victory at the battle of Kings Mountain! \nActivities throughout the weekend will include programs and demonstrations of 18th century frontier life including open hearth cooking\, food preservation\, flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, music\, games\, Revolutionary War era battle tactics\, and much more. The weekend will also include a special Veterans Day program on Saturday\, November 12th to honor the combatants at the Battle of Kings Mountain and our current veterans and armed service members. \nAlso\, join members of the Overmountain Weavers Guild as they present the Fall Fibers Fair inside the park visitors center throughout the weekend. Visit with local spinners\, weavers\, and fiber artists to learn more about wool\, flax\, and other fiber arts. Also\, do some early Christmas shopping with fiber arts vendors who will be set up throughout the weekend as well. \nThis is a perfect opportunity for the entire family to visit one of Tennessee’s finest state parks and enjoy a day immersed in history and fun. Admission is free so don’t miss this unique event showcasing Tennessee’s rich heritage. During your time at the park be sure to experience the interpretive exhibits as well as our book and gift shop to make your visit complete. \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park is located at 1651 W. To make ends meet\, he spent tireless hours working construction jobs – never losing sight of his dream to make music. The hard-working family man is turning heads now with full-length album\, Stack of Records (Big Loud Records)\, produced by Joey Moi\, the follow up to his aptly titled first project\, Workin’ Hard. Breakout hit “Where I Find God” – a powerful ode to finding peace in a higher power’s presence – is featured on the new set\, garnering Fleet praise for his “emotive vocals” (Billboard) and amassing over 22 million official music video views. Fleet is on the road now supporting Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous Tour. \n  \nDoors open at 6:30pm. Our Box Office opens 2 hours before showtime. SUMMARY:Larry Fleet to Perform at Paramount Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Blue-collar\, Tennessee native Larry Fleet grew up with a love of music sparked by an eclectic mix of influences spanning Merle Haggard to Marvin Gaye. To make ends meet\, he spent tireless hours working construction jobs – never losing sight of his dream to make music. A chance encounter with Jake Owen in 2017 led to a collaborative friendship and an opening slot on the road. Shortly thereafter\, Fleet was sharing the stage with one of his heroes – Willie Nelson – and etching his mark in the Nashville songwriting community\, co-writing with esteemed tunesmiths Rhett Akins\, Brett James\, and Kendell Marvel.
