SUMMARY:Celebrate the Holidays at Bays Mountain Park
DESCRIPTION:Bays Mountain Park is hosting its first-ever “Holiday at Bays” event this month with an evening of festive activities\, including wreath-making\, barge rides\, owl searching\, and an amazing laser light show in the planetarium. \nHoliday at Bays will take place on December 9\, kicking off with a holiday laser light show at 5:30 p.m. in the planetarium (Cost: $10 per person). Then\, if you choose\, you can participate in a second activity (Owl Prowl\, Barge Ride or Wreath Workshop) for an additional fee. \nLaser Light Show: \nCelebrate the season under the planetarium dome with a selection of our favorite holiday tunes brought to life with gorgeous laser choreography\, full dome visuals and colorful lighting effects. Vibrant animations and gorgeous abstracts dance above your heads\, as the music takes you away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It might be cold outside\, but it’s nice and toasty under the dome. \nOwl Prowl: \nJoin naturalist Fred Hilton on a journey through the winter forests as he puts his owl calling skills to the test. This program will involve a short hike and participants should be prepared with sturdy shoes\, warm jackets\, and flashlights. \n\nBarge Ride: \nEnjoy a nighttime barge ride around our lake under the glow of Christmas lights. Participants will explore the lake and talk about the history of Christmas in Appalachia. Hot chocolate will be served prior to boarding but be sure to dress warmly as it will be cold on the water. \n\nWreath Workshop: \nContinue the tradition of wreath making using natural materials found right in our own backyards. This class is a great way to express your creativity and learn a little about Christmas of times past. The park will provide all the materials. The play was first written in 1595\, and first performed as a ballet in the 1960s to a beautiful score by Felix Mendelssohn\, composed specifically for the story in 1826. This performance features all of the students and company members of Bristol Ballet\, as well as community members and guest artists. The ballet tells the timeless tale of fairy mischief and mortal mayhem. Oberon\, king of the fairies\, fights with Titania\, the queen of the fairies\, over a child. Oberon punishes Titania by sending Puck\, his mischievous fairy sidekick\, to make Titania fall in love with the first person she sees. Puck accidentally meddles with two human couples in the course of his mischief. Thus ensues much confusion between the four mortals as their lives intertwine. Finally\, Oberon makes peace with Titania\, and Puck rearranges everything back to the natural order. From fairy shenanigans to love triangles to a spellbound donkey\, and a lot of drama in between\, there are plenty of humorous moments to enjoy\n\nOur Box Office opens 2 hours before each showtime. DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough’s Annual Celebration of Trees \nTwinkling lights\, the scent of Fraser firs\, handcrafted ornaments and Christmas decorations are filling the shops and store fronts of downtown Jonesborough. The annual Celebration of Trees\, a unique exhibit of beautifully decorated Christmas trees\, will be held in Historic Jonesborough on December 4 through December 26. \nThis year’s exhibit begins at the Jonesborough Visitors Center\, located at 117 Boone Street\, where seven beautifully decorated live trees will be on display within the Old Town Emporium Gift Shop. These trees are all sponsored and decorated by area businesses and non-profit organizations. Participants can pick up a program which features a listing of locations throughout the historic district where they can view over 30 decorated trees. \nThe celebration of trees has been a Jonesborough tradition for over 30 years. Growing over the years\, it is now become an event that stretches from the Jonesborough Visitors Center to the Jonesborough Senior Center to the Chuckey Depot Museum on 2nd Ave. The exhibit features many spots in between as well including Boone Street Market\, Gabriel’s Christmas\, Mill Spring Park Gazebo\, McKinney Center and many others. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Allandale Mansion is continuing a decades long tradition this holiday season by opening its doors to the public and letting folks enjoy room after room of Christmas decorations. \nThe Allandale Mansion Christmas Tours will take place on December 2 (from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.) and on December 3 (from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.). Tickets will be available at the door and are priced as follows: \n\nAges 12 and up: $3 (cash only)\nChildren 6-12: $1 (cash only)\nChildren under 6: Free\n\nThe Christmas tours are self-guided and normally take around 30 minutes to an hour. The mansion will have people on hand throughout the house to answer any questions about Allandale and its history. \nCookies and hot cider will be offered on both days. Harpist Martha Painter will be performing on December 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. while Santa Claus himself will pay the mansion a visit on December 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. \nAllandale Mansion was built in the early 1950s and donated to the city of Kingsport in 1969 after the death of its owner\, Harvey Brooks. The property includes the mansion\, two barns\, a picnic pavilion\, two man-made ponds\, the Heron Dome and a 2\,000-square-foot amphitheater. \nPlease note\, Allandale Mansion can be rented during the holidays for events and photo sessions. DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Exchange Place will once again be playing its part in the “conspiracy of love” by hosting its\nannual Christmas in the Country celebration on Saturday\, December 2\, from 10:00 am until 4:00\npm at Kingsport’s historic Living History Farm\, located at 4812 Orebank Road. Proudly listed on the\nNational Register of Historic Places\, admission will be $5 for adults and completely free for children\nunder 12 in the final public event of the year at the tradition-rich farmstead. \nVendors and demonstrators will be found on both sides of Orebank Road\, which will feature unique\,\nhandmade folk arts and crafts such as pottery\, one-of-a kind greeting cards\, inimitable soaps\, paintings\,\nhand-woven items\, wooden ware and jewelry. People who come from all over for Vickie Price’s wreaths\,\nroping and bundles — made with a wide variety of freshly-cut greenery – will be happy to know that the\nMountain City resident will be there and fully supplied. \nChristmas in the Country actually began its life as Christmas in a Country Kitchen\, and scrumptious food is\nstill a main component of the festival. Joining long-time favorite Charlotte Ellis of Flour Fancies with her\nhomemade breads and fruit cakes will be others with baked goods and treats\, both to eat on-site and to\ntake home. A special addition this year is Lynette Carter with her holiday molded chocolates\, with proceeds\nbenefiting Exchange Place. Two Dads Cafe of Kingsport will have lunch and snack items available\, such as\nchili\, potato soup\, pork barbecue and cobbler. \nWhile this is a perfect place to find distinctive holiday gifts\, decorations and stocking stuffers\, Christmas in\nthe Country is much more than just another shopping opportunity. Part of our mission is to demonstrate\nhow our pre-Civil War ancestors would have prepared for the holidays\, which can be seen in many of our\nhistory-rich buildings. The Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, featuring the Junior Apprentices\, will\nbe making salsify fritters and cinnamon waffles in the kitchen\, and ginger cakes and popcorn in the Cook’s\nCabin.  The JAs will be a busy group\, as they will be decorating a tabletop Christmas tree and making\npomanders (a ball made for perfumes to ward off foul odors) in the Schoolhouse\, chopping wood and\nassisting in the Blacksmith Shop. They will also be offering a variety of handmade and historically-inspired\ngoods\, including tulip poplar baskets\, ginger cakes\, Christmas crackers\, and Yule Log kits. \nAs is always the case\, the Overmountain Weavers Guild will be in a variety of places around Exchange\nPlace. They will be demonstrating their skills and displaying the weavings from the three top winners of\ntheir 50th Anniversary Challenge\, and continuing their exhibit of yarns dyed naturally with herbs and plants\,\nas well as Suzanne Burow’s reconstructions and innovations woven from antique drafts. The rare\, restored\nrocker beater looms can be seen in the Burow Museum\, while handmade and handspun fiber items\, some\nmade using the wool from our Cotswold sheep\, will be on sale in Roseland. Near the Burow Museum\,\nvisitors will find a red-seated carriage (no horses\, sorry!)\, perfect for a photo with that old-time feel that\ncould become this year’s holiday card. \nPopular artist Jennifer Hanlon returns to lead a needle-felting workshop that will result in participants\ncreating their own snowman\, a perfect holiday addition. This fascinating class will begin at 10:30 am in the \nRoseland building and will last for much of the day. The cost of the workshop will vary\, depending on how\nmuch you would like supplied by Jennifer; please visit her website for complete information\, including the\nrequired advance registration (https://www.hanlonscreativecorner.com/events). \nIn the Blacksmith Shop\, David and John Pace will be working using a newly-restored bellows. The father-\nand-son duo\, who began volunteering last year\, discovered that the bellows – which provides additional air\nto the fire\, making the forge hotter — had several holes in the bladder\, some dry rot\, missing hardware and\na crack in one of its wooden paddles. They took it upon themselves to restore the bellows\, and you can\nsee their completed effort at Christmas in the Country. (You can also see a story about their project on\nwww.youtube.com/@JandDprojects0965.) \nBirding Kingsport\, a chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society\, will partner with Wild Birds\nUnlimited in Johnson City and offer bird feeders\, seed and other specialties for our winged friends\, along\nwith answering questions about feeding and birding. Pine cone feeders can be made on site\, and\ninstructions will be provided on how to build a nest box for the beautiful Eastern Bluebird. (In honor of\nlongtime volunteer Ron Russum\, who passed away earlier this year\, new bluebird houses will be put up\naround the farm.) Exchange Place will also continue its tradition of inviting visitors to help decorate a tree\nfor the birds. \nShowing the simplicity of the Christmas celebration on the Preston Farmstead in 1850 is a focus of hands-\non children's activities. A youngster of that era might have made a toy\, gift or card from natural treasures\nfound on the farm\, or from leftover cloth or yarn\, something that could be hung on the Christmas tree.\nSeasonal "chores\," like grinding corn\, or the necessity of making candles to get through the winter\, will be\nlocated around the site\, depending on the weather\, of course. Meeting the animals who call Exchange\nPlace home year-round – the cow\, donkey\, chickens\, pigs and sheep – is always an enduring treat for\nchildren of all ages. And stocking stuffers and unusual gifts can be found at the Museum Store\, located\nnext door to the Roseland building. Shoppers will find ol' timey toys\, oak split baskets\, and a variety of\nitems exclusive to our farmstead\, like Exchange Place prints\, ornaments\, a cookbook of 19th century\nrecipes\, and much more. \nThe Yule Log Ceremony\, a free community tradition\, is always popular and will be held near the Cook’s\nCabin beginning around 4:15 pm\, concluding the day’s festivities. Originated by the Vikings\, it served as\na way for them to honor their gods and request good luck in the coming year. Later it was incorporated\ninto the harvest festivals of Germany and Scandinavia\, then moved to England when the Normans\nconquered the isles\, and eventually was brought to the New World by the Pilgrims. While the Preston\nfamily may not have burned a Yule Log\, we like to make it a part of our Christmas in the Country as a\nsymbol of peace and good will for our wonderful community. Since it was often decorated with evergreens\nand sometimes sprinkled with grain or cider before it was finally lit\, we encourage everyone to bring a sprig\nto cast onto the fire\, and also to wear fine\, colorful headgear to the event\, which will conclude with the\nsinging of carols and\, of course\, a cup of hot wassail! DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHistoric Blountville Tree Lighting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlountville\, Tennessee – Historic Blountville will be holding its annual Christmas Tree Lighting on December 1st at 6:00pm. The backdrop of this picturesque event will be the Historic Sullivan County Courthouse. The theme\, “One Special Town…Two Special Trees.” The Traditional Christmas Tree is a massive 50’ tree located on the courthouse lawn and will be lit by Mayor Richard Venable and Grandson. Beginning in 2016 a new tradition was born when the Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism partnered with Hope for Victims Advocacy Group. The second special tree will be lit by Joan Berry in remembrance of lives lost to violence. Our emcee will be Barry Bricky\, Public Information Officer for KFD. State Representative Bud Hulsey will give the Keynote remarks. Rev. Justin Daniel of Blountville Christian Church will provide the  Christmas Blessing. Seasonal Instrumental music will be provided by Cora and Chloe Caldwell. The West Ridge High School Chorus will sing Christmas Carols\, under the direction of Denise McReynolds. DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center invites guests to their annual Soups and Songs fundraiser on Monday\, November 27. This event is an in-person\, sit-down dinner with holiday entertainment.   \n  \nDoors will open at 5:45 p.m. Dinner will be served between 6 and 7 p.m. The sing-along will begin at 7 p.m.   \n  \nTickets are $30 per person. The event showcases the site’s 30-foot Douglas Fir\, lit this season with over 13\,000 twinkling LED lights and surrounded by twenty-five live trees decorated by community members as part of Believe in Bristol’s Christmas Tree Village. \n  \nIn addition to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting\, Believe in Bristol will host its Inaugural Winter Carnival in conjunction with the event. This free community event begins at 4:00 p.m. and will include free hot cocoa and cotton candy\,  carnival-style games and activities\, and crafts and goodies for children to take home. \n  \nThe Annual Christmas Tree Lighting\, scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m.\, will feature community caroling\, a ceremony led by our Bristol city representatives\, and conclude with a live performance by the big man himself and his band\, Santa and the Sleigh Boys! This program is part of the town of Jonesborough’s “Whoville” holiday celebration which takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nThis program will feature a reading of the “Grinch” in the restored parlor room as well as a display of holiday items from our archival collection. The Chester Inn will also talk about the history of Victorian holiday celebration customs and the practice of storytelling during the holidays. Each program will be approximately 15-20 minutes. \n  \nThis year there will be readings at noon\, 1:15\, 2 and 2:45 p.m. Due to spacing issues\, the attendance of each program will be for the first 20 people.
