SUMMARY:January Jams Presents: The Del McCoury Band
DESCRIPTION:If You Like: Ricky Skaggs\, Bill Monroe\, Ralph Stanley\, Tony Rice\nA True American icon and the most awarded band in the history of bluegrass.\nFor more than fifty years\,Del McCoury’s music has defined authenticity for hard core bluegrass fans as well as a growing number of fans among those only vaguely familiar with the genre.McCoury is something special\, a living link to the days when bluegrass was made only in hillbilly honkytonks\, schoolhouse shows and on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry\, yet also a commandingly vital presence today\, from prime time and late night talk show TV to music festivals where audiences number in the hundreds of thousands.\nBorn in York County\, PA seventy five years ago\,Del McCoury would once have seemed an unlikely candidate for legendary status. Bitten hard by the bluegrass bug when he heard Earl Scruggs’ banjo in the early ’50s.McCoury became a banjo picker himself\, working in the rough but lively Baltimore and D.C. bar scene into the early 1960s. He got his first taste of the limelight when he joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in early 1963; the Father of Bluegrass moved McCoury from the banjo to guitar\, made him his lead singer\, and gave him a lifetime’s worth of bluegrass tutelage direct from the source. Flash-forward to 1990s and the Del McCoury Band is on top of the bluegrass world\, along the way giving birth to a more startling phenomenon: the emergence of the group onto the larger musical scene as a unique torchbearer for the entire sweep of bluegrass and its history. For it turned out that the unmistakable authenticity of McCoury’s music-along with his good-natured willingness to keep alert for new sounds and new opportunities-had bred fans in some unlikely places. That bluegrass-bred stars like Gill and Alison Krauss (who first met Del at a bluegrass festival when she filled in for a missing fiddler of his) would sing his praises wasn’t surprising\, but who would have expected country-rock icons like Steve Earle or jam bands like the supremely popular Phish to have joined in the chorus? By the second half of the ’90s\, the acclaim-and Del’s open-mindedness-put McCourys in onstage jams with Phish and on the road and in the studio with Earle\, bringing the Del McCoury Band’s fierce musicianship and its leader’s instantaneous\, easygoing connection with listeners to new arenas. The group appeared on prime time television and began an ongoing series of visits to popular late night TV talk shows\, toured rock clubs and college campuses\, and found itself welcome at country and even jazz-oriented music festivals and venues.\nYet while reaching out to almost unimaginable audiences\,Del’s music retains its signature characteristics. The fifth decade of that half-century of music making has been filled with new and ongoing triumphs. The Del McCoury Band has shown unprecedented stability\, with but a single change in membership in twenty years; nine IBMA Entertainer of the Year trophies\, their namesake earned membership in the cast of the legendary Grand Ole Opry in 2003\, and the Band earned their first Best Bluegrass Album Grammy award two years later followed by their second Grammy win in 2014 (to go along with double digit nominations); they traveled with the groundbreaking post-O Brother “Down From The Mountain” tour\, performed and recorded (on his Grammy-winning These Days) with Gill and with country star Dierks Bentley; they are a regular at the spectacular Bonnaroo Music Festival\, and Del’s namesake Festival\, DelFest has quickly become one of the premier string band events in the country showcasing acts ranging from bluegrass legend Bobby Osborne to Phish’s frontman Trey Anastasio.\nDel might be 76\, but he’s singing better than ever and showing no signs of slowing down. \nOpening in Support: Bill & The Belles\nWith striking three-part harmonies and masterful instrumentation\, Bill and the Belles skillfully breathe new life into the sounds of early country music. At the foothills of the Blue Ridge and the forefront of old time music\, Bill and the Belles (Johnson City\, Tennessee) continue to further the music traditions of their region. From sentimental Southern ballads to the popular songs of Tin Pan Alley to regional fiddle breakdowns\, a Bill and the Belles show is a celebration of the diversity country music once represented.\nLifelong musicians Kris Truelsen\, Grace Van’t Hof\, Kalia Yeagle\, and Karl Zerfas bring to the stage an uplifting show unlike any other\, full of humor\, high spirits\, and all-around revelry. It’s clear this group shares a rare musical connection and deep love for the music\, and their excitement is contagious. Bill and the Belles are hitting the road with fervor\, eager to share their music with new audiences. They continue to play alongside America’s top country and roots music artists as the resident band for the historic radio program Farm and Fun Time presented by Radio Bristol and the Birthplace of Country Music.\n“Bill and the Belles is committed to helping early country music remain appreciated — not just replicated.” — Rolling Stone\n“They can flat out sing. Early country music\, spot-on harmonies and spectacular timing make this one of the best groups to come down the pike in a while. ” -Asheville Citizen Times\n“A 78 RPM shellac record come to life. What a wonderful and authentically American sound… ” — Craig Havighurst\, Music City Roots\nTime – Doors Open at 7:15 PM Show Starts at 8:00 PM

SUMMARY:East TN PBS Presents "Victoria"
DESCRIPTION:Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as the young Queen Victoria at the outset of her epic reign\, which set the stage for an entire era that would be named in her honor. Scripted by bestselling novelist Daisy Goodwin (The Fortune Hunter)\, Victoria airs in seven magnificent parts\, fit for a queen\, on MASTERPIECE\, January 15\, 2017 on PBS.\nFollowing Victoria from her accession to the throne at age 18\, through her education in politics\, courtship and marriage\, Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge.\nThe stellar cast includes Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle) as Lord Melbourne\, the British prime minister who was Victoria’s father figure and intimate friend; Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) as the handsome\, brilliant and awkward Prince Albert\, who stole Victoria’s heart after a rocky start; and Alex Jennings (Churchill’s Secret) as Leopold I\, King of Belgium\, Victoria and Albert’s matchmaking uncle who had dreams of a dynasty for his obscure royal line—which he amazingly achieved. Paul Rhys (Borgia) plays Sir John Conroy\, the rumored lover of Victoria’s mother\, the Duchess of Kent\, a German princess played by German actress Catherine H. Flemming.\nTickets to this screening are FREE\, courtesy of East Tennessee PBS. Reserve your seat today at paramountbristol.org.

SUMMARY:January Jams Presents: John Cowan w/Darin & Brooke Aldridge
DESCRIPTION:If You Like: Sam Bush\, Bela Fleck\, John Prine\, Jim Lauderdale\, Darrell Scott\nJohn Cowan\, also known as the “Voice of Newgrass\,” has been singing his heart out for thirty-five years\, and his soaring vocals have only improved with time. A true innovator\, John applies his powerful pipes to genres from country\, bluegrass\, and gospel to soul\, jazz\, and rock-and-roll – often within the space of a single concert. His ability to move fluidly through multiple styles\, and carry mesmerized audiences on the journey with him\, has set him apart as one of the most loved and admired vocal artists of his generation\, not just by fans and critics but among fellow musicians as well.\nCowan’s rise to fame began in 1974 when he auditioned as the bassist for the then up-and-coming New Grass Revival. Needless to say\, John was offered the gig\, but it wasn’t until he’d accepted the job that the shy 22-year-old casually mentioned that he could sing. With his distinctive\, rock-tinged tenor vocal and heart-thumping electric bass\, John\, along with fellow New Grass Revival band mates Sam Bush\, Courtney Johnson\, and Curtis Burch\, and later Bela Fleck and Pat Flynn\, introduced a new generation of music fans to an explosive\, experimental and ultimately\, eponymous brand of bluegrass. The “newgrass” sound spawned popular jam bands such as Leftover Salmon and Yonder Mountain String Band in addition to shaping the sensibilities of country megastars Garth Brooks\, the Dixie Chicks\, the Zac Brown Band\, and Darius Rucker.\nAfter New Grass Revival disbanded in 1990\, John went on to record a series of critically acclaimed solo albums in addition to laying down guest bass and vocal parts on some 120 recordings for artists including Steve Earle\, Bela Fleck\, Alison Krauss\, and John Prine. A few years later\, John teamed up with Rusty Young of Poco\, Bill Lloyd of Foster & Lloyd\, and Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers in The Sky Kings\, a widely successful country rock band. John’s newfound alliance with Pat Simmons gained him the role of bassist for the Doobie Brothers from 1992 through 1995\, as well as a songwriting credit for “Can’t Stand to Lose” on the Doobie Brothers 2000 release Sibling Rivalry. \nJoined by Darin & Brooke Aldridge\nHusband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge draw on the traditions of their native North Carolina\, the savvy of a young\, gifted band and their own dedication to ingenuity to create the most mature release of their career with their latest release\, Flying.\nThe duo has placed at the top of the charts on Americana/Roots\, SiriusXM\, Bluegrass and Gospel charts. They have received multiple nominations from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPGBMA) and Inspirational Country Music (ICM). The music video “Wildflower” is being featured on CMT and CMT Edge and GAC. Their TV appearances include PBS\, Great American Gospel\, The Bluegrass Road\, Presley’s Country Jubilee\, RFD-TV\, Rural-TV\, Daystar Network\, Blue Highways TV\, Song of the Mountains and Music City Roots.\nThis special pairing is sure to be a one-of-a kind show at Gilliam Stage at Barter Theatre\, don’t miss it! \nOpening Act: Zoe & Cloyd\nZoe & Cloyd spring from deep roots in American music. Founding members of the acclaimed Americana trio\, Red June and long-time veterans of the Asheville\, NC music scene\, Natalya Zoe Weinstein and John Cloyd Miller shifted gears to their duet project after the birth of their daughter in early 2015. Their debut recording\, Equinox\, released in April 2015\, features original and traditional repertoire spanning bluegrass\, old-time and folk and showcases the elegant simplicity of two instruments and two voices. The album met with high acclaim in publications such as No Depression and Bluegrass Unlimited\, among others. Their banner year continued with a 1st place win at the Duo Contest at the prestigious FreshGrass Festival in North Adams\, Massachusetts.\nJohn Cloyd Miller’s foundation in traditional bluegrass and old-time music coupled with his modern sensibility combine to make him a natural musician and performer. A twelfth generation North Carolina native and the grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler and NC Folk Heritage Award winner Jim Shumate\, his Appalachian roots run deep. John is well known for his haunting mountain voice as well as his instrumental prowess and award-winning songwriting. He is a 1st place winner of the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and a recipient of an Artist Fellowship for songwriting by the North Carolina Arts Council.\nNatalya Zoe Weinstein also comes from a musical family: her father is master jazz pianist and her grandfather was a professional klezmer musician. She is an accomplished fiddler in a variety of styles as well as an inspiring singer and songwriter. While trained classically in her home state of Massachusetts\, she has spent many years fine-tuning her bluegrass and old-time fiddling with some of the country’s top traditional musicians. Now a mentor to many young players\, Natalya is a sought after instructor and is in high demand as a teacher and session musician.\nTime – Doors Open at 7:15 PM Show Starts at 8:00 PM

SUMMARY:January Jams Presents: The Infamous Stringdusters: The Laws of Gravity Tour with special guest Billy Strings
DESCRIPTION:If You Like: Yonder Mountain String Band\, Greensky Bluegrass\, Leftover Salmon\, Steep Canyon Rangers\, Railroad Earth\nAt the helm of today’s bluegrass advancement stands The Infamous Stringdusters. Composed of Andy Hall (dobro)\, Andy Falco (guitar)\, Chris Pandolfi (banjo)\, Jeremy Garrett (fiddle)\, and Travis Book (upright bass)\, this acoustic quintet combines a collective skillset seldom rivaled\, but often reveled.\nThe Stringdusters’ resume includes six studio albums\, four International Bluegrass Music Association awards\, and a Grammy nomination\, but their true brilliance lies in their passion for live performance. Intricate harmonies\, cleverly composed arrangements and their profound commitment to presentation induces traditionalists and newcomers to stomp their feet on common ground.\nWith a nod to the past and a firm foot down on the gas toward the future\, the ‘Dusters “…don’t leave bluegrass behind; they’re stretching it from within.” – New York Times \nSpecial Guest Billy Strings\n“Imagine taking a hardcore heavy metal band like Pantera and cramming all that energy into the body of a 23-year-old bluegrass guitarist. That’s Billy Strings. He tears up the stage during his set\, grimacing\, growling\, head-banging and tearing the holy sh*t out of a set of super-charged Americana. Kid can pick! DAMN can he pick! It’s acoustic music with a punk edge and a lot of youthful enthusiasm and\, oh man\, that PICKING! Strings covers a wide variety of classic tunes and songs in his show\, from a slow-burning cover of ‘Wild Bill Jones’to a raw cover of ‘Cocaine Blues’or picking delights like ‘Red Haired Boy’and ‘Soldier’s Joy.’But the standout track is the opening song\, ‘Dust in a Baggie\,’ a cleverly written mountain song about meth that manages to take a very current and destructive issue and translate it into the bluegrass vernacular. It’s a tour-de-force\, written by Strings himself\, and is the moment you realize just how far this kid’s gonna go.” — D.L. “THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION”\nTime – Doors Open at 7:15 PM Show Starts at 8:00 PM

SUMMARY:January Jams Presents: Justin Townes Earle
DESCRIPTION:If You Like: Jason Isbell\, Townes Van Zandt\, Dave Rawlings Machine\, Hayes Carll\, John Prine\, Steve Earle\nFresh off the success of his recently released album\, Single Mothers\, Justin Townes Earle announced the companion album Absent Fathers to be released January 13\, 2015. Also comprised of 10 tracks\, Absent Fathers was recorded alongside Single Mothers as a double album\, but as Justin began to sequence it\, he felt each half needed to make its own statement and they took on their own identities.\nIn describing Single Mothers\, NPR describes the album as “…mov[ing] between evocative portraits of place set in knotty emotional frames\, prickly confessions of destructive patterns\, and melancholic eloquence in the wake of short-lived love affairs.” The Sun UK hailed the album\, noting “Justin’s songcraft is fast maturing and this is a concise exercise in laying emotions bare\,” while No Depression summed up Justin’s career by saying ” No longer needing to beg for attention\, he’s built a career that’s brought him critical acclaim and a well-deserved reputation for consistent artistic integrity.”\nOnce compared to a man who wears many suits\, in thirty-two short years Justin Townes Earle has experienced more than most\, both personally and professionally. Between releasing four full-length-critically-acclaimed albums\, constant touring\, multiple stints in rehab\, a new found sobriety\, being born Steve Earle’s son\, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels\, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life\, it’s safe to say JTE has quite the story to tell. His fifth album (and first ever on Vagrant Records) serves as the perfect platform for such narrations.\nAs a recently married\, sober man JTE writes from a point of maturity and content we’ve not seen before on past records. “One day I just realized it’s not cool to die young\, and it’s even less cool to die after 30\,” Justin states as he reflects on a life past and his newly found clarity. What he’s created is material that’s raw\, honest and personal in a way he hasn’t touched upon since his debut EP\, Yuma.\nTime – Doors Open at 7:15 PM Show Starts at 8:00 PM\nTickets are $25 or purchase tickets for Justin Townes Earle and A.J. Croce on January 6th for just $45.\nOpening Act: If Birds Could Fly

SUMMARY:Sullivan County Civil War Trail Marker Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Sullivan County To Dedicate Civil War Trail Marker “Burning Bridges”\n2 PM\, Friday\, January 20\, 2017\nCorner of Bluff City Highway and Holston Drive\nBluff City\, TN\n \nBLOUNTVILLE\, Tenn. – The Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism and the City of Bluff City will hold a dedication ceremony for “Burning Bridges”\, a TN Civil War Trails marker to be unveiled at Bluff City. The ceremony and ribbon-cutting will be held at 2 PM\, Fri.\, Jan. 20\, 2017\, at the corner of Bluff City Highway and Holston Drive at Bluff City\, Tennessee. The marker is the newest marker on the Sullivan County Civil War Trails marker program.\n \nSullivan County has partnered with the TN Department of Tourist Development to implement Civil War markers throughout the county that tell the story of the Civil War.\n \nSullivan County Mayor Richard S. Venable and Bluff City Mayor Irene Wells will provide opening remarks.  Drew Gruber\, Director of the Civil War Trails Program\, will speak on the historical significance of Bluff City in conjunction with the Civil War railroad.  Research and groundwork for the marker was provided by Lucas Triplett of Sullivan County.\n \n“This sign itself marks a dramatic and lesser known operation which stretched from Tennessee into Alabama and specifically looked to target nine different bridges\, aimed at disrupting the fledgling Confederacy’s vital supply routes. Civil War Trails connects the physical and intellectual dots of America’s Civil War sites\, allowing visitors to literally follow in the footsteps of the soldiers\, sailors and citizens. The Trails program brings them through downtowns\, main streets and museums across all five states. Lucas’s attention to detail in his research and his guidance in the design of the sign and the site provide a very evocative visitor experience. The sign not only educates the public but adds Bluff City into this very popular network of Civil War sites. This creates a major source of revenue for local businesses\, municipalities and each participating state as our visitors look for equally unique dining\, shopping and lodging experiences\,” said Mr. Gruber.\n \nTo date\, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development has installed more than 378 Civil War markers across the State of Tennessee.\n \nLocal historians\, members of lineage organizations and the general public are cordially invited to attend.\n \nContact:\nShelia Hunt\nsheliahunt@charter.net\n(423) 323-4660\n

SUMMARY:January Jams Presents: Mandolin Orange
DESCRIPTION:If You Like: Elephant Revival\, The Punch Brothers\, everybodyfields\, Jill Andrews\, The Stray Birds\nLean in to Mandolin Orange’s new album\, “Blindfaller\,” and it’s bound to happen. You’ll suddenly pick up on the power and devastation lurking in its quietude\, the doom hiding beneath its unvarnished beauty. You’ll hear the way it magnifies the intimacy at the heart of the North Carolina duo’s music\, as if they created their own musical language as they recorded it.\nDue Sept. 30 on Yep Roc Records\, “Blindfaller” builds on the acclaim of Mandolin Orange’s breakthrough debut on the label\, 2013’s “This Side of Jordan\,” and its follow-up\, last year’s “Such Jubilee.”Since then they’ve steadily picked up speed and fans they’ve earned from long stretches on the road\, including appearances at Newport Folk Festival\, Austin City Limits Fest\, and Telluride Bluegrass. It’s been an auspicious journey for a pair who casually met at a bluegrass jam session in 2009.\n“When we finished ‘Such Jubilee\,’ I started writing these songs with a different goal in mind. I thought about how I would write songs for somebody else to record\,” Marlin explains. “I ended up with a bunch of songs like that\, but we chose ones that I still felt personally connected to.”\nHoled up at the Rubber Room studio in Chapel Hill\, N.C.\, with a full band this time around\, they laid down the tracks in a week between touring. They’ve always been keen on the notion that drawn-out recording sessions don’t necessarily yield better results. A good song\, and just one good take\, will always shine through any studio sorcery.\nThe passage of time\, and the regret that often accompanies it\, courses through these songs. “When did all the good times turn to hard lineson my face/ And lead me so far from my place right by your side?” Marlin ruminates on “My Blinded Heart.”\nIn fact\, there’s heartache by the numbers on “Blindfaller.” If you didn’t know better\, you’d swear “Picking Up Pieces” is a tearjerker George Jones or Willie Nelson sang back in the early 1970s. It’s a Mandolin Orange original\, of course\, and also a poignant reminder of the economy and grace with which Marlin imbues his songs – say what’s important and scrap the rest.\nA country dirge with soulful washes of pedal steel and mandolin\, “Wildfire” details the the lingering\, present-day devastation of slavery and the Civil War\, with Marlin’s voice locking into close harmonies with Frantz on the chorus.“Take This Heart of Gold” opens with perhaps the best classic-country line you’ll hear all year: “Take this heart of gold and melt it down.” (Marlin admits it was inspired by a Tom Waits lyric he misheard.)\nBut there’s also room for detours. Straight out of a honky tonk\, “Hard Travelin’” lets the band shift into overdrive. A freewheeling ode to life on the road\, it had been kicking around for a while but never fit on previous releases.\nAs for the album title\, it’s meant to evoke a sense of wonder\, of contemplation. A “faller” is someone who fells trees\, and in this case that person is blind to his/her own actions and those of the world. The spectral cover photo\, by Scott McCormick\, is open to interpretation\, too: Either those trees are engulfed in flames or sunlight is pouring through them. It’s up to you.\n“We wanted different vibes and different intuitions on these tracks\,” Marlin says\, “and I feel like we really captured that.”\nTime – Doors Open at 7:15 PM Show Starts at 8:00 PM

SUMMARY:Sugar Lime Blue at O'Mannin's Pub
DESCRIPTION:Sugar Lime Blue\nJanuary 20 | O’Mainnin’s Pub\nAmericana Music Association Recording Artist\, Sugar Lime Blue\, is truly a genre crossing band as proven by the title track\, off of their sophmore release “Move That Earth”\, which became a top 3 radio single in the country genre as reported by Spins Tracking System(STS/New Music Weekly) The album was favorably reviewed by critics including respected Americana outlet The Alternate Root. Meanwhile\, the band was featured on the Grateful Dead’s Website and Social Media for their cover of “Little Sadie” a song rarely played by the Dead themselves\, but included as part of Sugar Lime Blues weekly cover series “The #SundayShoutOut. These inclusions\, and many more\, show how the band continues to transcend genres. Sugar Lime Blue is redefining Americana\, drawing from the 3 main American stylings of Jazz\, Blues and Country\, to create a purely unique sound. Classic Rock\, Blues\, and Traditional Country are all part of a musical offering that draws from the best of the familiar past with a twist of something new for the modern listener. Pull up a chair\, lend an ear and get lost in the smooth grooves\, winding musical passages and lilting vocals that is Sugar Lime Blue.
