SUMMARY:The Battle of the Lost State of Franklin
DESCRIPTION:Bristol\, Virginia – The Bristol Historical Association will be offering a program led by Judge David Tipton on Monday\, February 13 at 6:30pm at the Bristol Public Library.  The topic of the program is about the most historic series of events in upper East Tennessee\, The Battle of the Lost State of Franklin.  The conflict was between the forces led by Franklinite Governor John Sevier and the authorities of the State of North Carolina led by Colonel John Tipton.\n \nIn 1784\, four counties in western North Carolina declared their independence as the State of Franklin. These counties today would include Sullivan\, Washington\, Hawkins and Greene\, Tennessee.  Earlier the state of North Carolina had ceded its western land to the United States Congress but North Carolina retracted its cession with concern that it would be sold to Spain or France to pay off the government’s war debt.  Simultaneously\, representatives from these four counties petitioned for statehood as “Frankland” to the United States Congress.\n \nThe conflict ensued between the authorities of the State of North Carolina and the independent state of Franklin.  As a result\, North Carolina retracted its cession and began to organize an administration for the territory.  A simple majority of states favored acceptance of the petition in Congress\, but it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass\, even after the counties’ changed their proposed name to “Franklin” in an attempt to curry Benjamin Franklin’s and others’ favor.  The state effort lasted for four years\, between 1784 and 1788\, when Franklin rejoined North Carolina to protect the settlements from Indian attacks.\n \nDavid Tipton was an attorney and partner with the law firm of Tipton & Jones and in 2013 was appointed as Municipal Judge for the City of Bristol\, Tennessee. In 2014 he was appointed by Sullivan County Commission to serve as General Sessions Judge to fill the unexpired term of Judge William A. Watson\, a position he was later elected for an eight-year term.  He is a member of Tennessee Bar Association and involved with numerous community organizations\, including as trustee and past President of the Rocky Mount Historical Association and member of the Tipton-Haynes Historical Association\, Tennessee Historical Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.\n \nThe February 13th meeting is in partnership with the Bristol Public Library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”. The program is open to the general public to attend. Contact Tim Buchanan\, President\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, by e-mail; buchanan03@bvu.net.  Visit our Facebook page for details\, BRISTOL HISTORY.

SUMMARY:Valentine's Dinner and Swing Dance
DESCRIPTION:There are still tickets remaining for the Tusculum College Pioneer Jazz Band Valentine’s Day Dinner/Swing Dance benefit on Tuesday\, Feb. 14\, at the General Morgan Inn. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. The event includes dinner and a performance of the Pioneer Jazz Band\, along with special guests.\n \nThe Valentine’s Day event is a fundraiser to raise money for much-needed equipment for the entire Tusculum band program\, according to David A. Price\, director of music at Tusculum College.\n \n“This will be our fourth year for this event and it has proven to be a popular and enjoyable way to celebrate Valentine’s Day\,” said Price. “Each year we have had tremendous feedback on the quality of the food\, as well as the fun of dancing the night away to the sounds of jazz standards.”\n \nTicket prices for the event are $55 per person or $400 for a table of eight guests. Both ticket and table purchases provide dance tickets\, free dance lessons\, an opening reception\, dinner and a special dessert. Please call in advance to request a vegetarian substitution. A cash bar will be available and the Tusculum College Band Booster Club will be hosting a silent auction.\n \nThe deadline for ticket purchases is Friday\, Feb. 10.\n \nDr. Bob and Christine Thorpe will teach dance lessons starting at 5:30 p.m. the night of the dinner dance. This year\, in preparation for the event\, the college is also featuring swing dance lessons on Thursday Feb. 9\, in the Chalmers Conference Center in the Niswonger Commons on the Tusculum College campus. The lessons are free to anyone that has tickets and has signed up to attend the event or $10 per person for those who have not purchased tickets to the event.\n \nValentine’s Day dinner benefit tickets are available for purchase at the General Morgan Inn or by contacting Price at 423-636-7303 or emailing daprice@tusculum.edu. A hotel package special is also available by contacting the General Morgan Inn at 423-787-1000.\n \nContact Price for special table reservations for larger group seating.\n \nThe Pioneer Band Program at Tusculum College began in 2010\, with the creation of the Pioneer Pep Band. The Pep Band quickly became a much-enjoyed feature of the 2010 Pioneer football and basketball seasons as it performed at the Pioneer Club tailgate parties before each home football game and during pregame and half-time festivities.\n \nSince that auspicious beginning a concert band\, jazz band\, marching band\, handbell choir and several small ensembles have been added to the college’s original band program. These groups perform on campus several times each year in addition to the community events at which they perform.\n \nTusculum College\, the first college in Tennessee and the 28th oldest in the nation\, is a liberal arts institution committed to providing a liberal arts education in a Judeo-Christian and civic arts environment\, with pathways for career preparation\, personal development and civic engagement. Approximately eighteen hundred students are enrolled on the main campus in Greeneville and two off-site locations in East Tennessee. The academic programs for both traditional-aged students and working adults served through the Graduate and Professional Studies program are delivered using focused calendars.

SUMMARY:Whimsical and Other Worldly Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts at the McKinney Center is pleased to announce their first exhibition of the year\, featuring Howard Dale and Patti Lawrence. The exhibition will be open and free to the public starting with the Opening Reception on Friday\, February 17\, at 6 pm. The exhibit will run through March 24. The McKinney Center is open for visitors Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm.\n \nDirector of the McKinney Center\, Theresa Hammons\, states\, “Howard and Patti have two completely different medias but their themes are very similar. When I see their work\, I feel as if I have just stepped into a fairy tale like Alice in Wonderland\, or a tale like Pirates of the Caribbean. Their artwork has a sort of whimsical feel to it. Almost otherworldly. I love the use of found objects that Patti incorporates into her sculptures. And Howard has an incredible imagination. I’m always looking forward to meeting the new characters he creates in his artwork. This exhibition will definitely appeal to the young and the old.”\n \nHoward Dale received a B.A. with a concentration in Visual Art Education from East Tennessee State University and an M.A. from Cumberland University. He has taught art in Kingsport City Schools for over a decade\, and in 2014 was named “Kingsport City Schools 2014 Elementary Teacher of the Year for Visual Arts.” He regularly participates in art shows throughout the region\, showcasing his Oddubon Collection (a mutated version of the Audubon nature studies)\, his Edwardian Cat Series\, and pieces from his Folklore and Folktales Collection. He is strongly influenced by legends and long forgotten bedtime stories where fears must be faced and strange things lurk in the shadows. His artwork can be found online at\, www.HowardDale.com\, facebook.com/HowardDaleArt\, Twitter@HowardDaleArt\, and on Instagram as HowardDaleArt.\n \nPatti Lawrence was born in Clifton\, NJ- a suburb of New York City. She has been creating things from found objects for as long as she can remember. After graduating from The School of Visual Arts in N.Y.C. in 1989 with a BFA\, she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching. She moved to Tennessee\, with her husband\, Eddie in 1993.\nShe is an avid junk collector and incorporates these “treasures” into her collage and assemblage work. Her pieces have been included in many national and regional competitions and can be seen in many galleries in the area as well as in private and public collections throughout the region.\nHer large\, hanging installation\, “Birds of a Feather”\, made from hundreds of recycled plastic bottles\, is part of Kingsport’s permanent art collection and hangs in the Higher Education Center in downtown Kingsport.\nThe McKinney Center houses the Jonesborough Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts and boasts of a mission to be\, “committed to inspiring the people of our area through both the appreciation of and the participation in the arts as a form of personal and collective expression.”  The objective of the program is to “bring the community at large closer together and show as an example to other communities the creative influence that the arts can bring to their quality of life.”  The McKinney Center is a department within the Town of Jonesborough.\n \nThe Opening Reception will be held on Friday\, February 17\, at 6 pm. The exhibit will run through March 24. The McKinney Center is open for visitors Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. The McKinney Center is located at 103 Franklin Avenue\, Jonesborough\, TN 37659.\n \nFor more information regarding the McKinney Center\, email Theresa Hammons at theresah@jonesborougtn.org or call 423-753-0562.\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Kingsport Theatre Guild presents "Diary of a Wallflower
DESCRIPTION:• FEB. 17-26: Kingsport Theatre Guild presents “Diary of a Wallflower” at the Renaissance Center\, Kingsport\, Tenn. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. High school junior Charlotte Walden is convinced she’s virtually invisible. Madison Truesdale’s popular clique doesn’t know she’s alive. Even her one friend\, Gabby\, doesn’t always notice or listen to her. And her mom is rarely around since she’s working long hours. Is it any wonder Charlotte begins to write in her diary? At least “Dear Diary” will listen. As Charlotte embraces her wallflower status\, she also learns that there are people who care\, people to whom she becomes more and more visible day by day. 423-392-8427\, www.kingsporttheatre.org

SUMMARY:The Annie Moses Band
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by An Anonymous Donor\nWarner Classics recording artist\, the Annie Moses Band has been inspiring and entertaining audiences for over a decade\, bringing their distinctive style of music across the U.S. and around the world. A captivating blend of folk and classical\, the Annie Moses Band is a talented ensemble of songwriters\, singers\, musicians\, and siblings combining technical skill with exhilarating showmanship.\nThe Art of the Love Song\, the Annie Moses Band’s PBS special\, is old-school elegance in the mold of Grace Kelly and Cary Grant. The band keeps a classical aesthetic in these archetypal love songs\, while flavoring them with retro strings and gypsy-jazz violin. Nat King Cole’s velvet stringwork serves as a big inspiration as well. The ultra-creative members of the band pluck repertoire from the Great American Songbook of the 40’s and 50’s\, then borrow from such soulful folk/rock songsmiths of the 60’s and 70’s as Don McLean\, Paul Williams and John Lennon. The Art of the Love Song is a tribute to the most treasured love songs of the last century. Be swept off your feet with the romance of forever!\nTicket Fee: $1.50 per ticket\nNo processing or delivery fees

SUMMARY:The Jokes on You Comedy Tour
DESCRIPTION:A Gallagher concert is an unforgettable experience. He is a keen and original observer of human nature and the American scene. “My humor makes people think\,” Gallagher says. “I want people to look more closely at this country and their lives to see the humor and absurdity in it all …I don’t have to make it up\, the truth is funny enough.”\nArtie is one of the Entertainment Industry’s most talked-about “must-see” performers. No stranger to Film and Television\, Commercials\, Voice-overs\, Print and Live Stand-up Comedy\, Artie is taking the industry and Newstalk Radio waves by storm. Artie has been seen on Law and Order\, Conan O’Brien\, David Letterman and The Tonight Show. He has performed his dynamic act in such places as Las Vegas\, Atlantic City\, Radio City Music Hall\, Westbury Music Fair\, The Toyota Comedy Festival\, The Chicago Comedy Festival and Universal Orlando…to name a few.\nWatching a Bob Nelson live performance is like watching several different types of top comedians all rolled up into one. Characters like the lovable nerd Eppy Epperman\, punchy boxer Jiffy Jeff and chicken rancher Wilby Stuckinson are as funny and memorable as any you will see in comedy today. Bob’s football routine is a recognized comedy classic and “Morning”\, his tale of a farmer and a duck\, is one of the finest works of one man showmanship to grace the modern stage. If all that were not enough\, Bob’s ability to relay personal stories and observations about everyday life put him in the same league as the best of today’s stand-up comics.

Too nervous to sing in public\, no originals were part of her repertoire until the end of Graduate School. From there\, Beth’s song list grew and eventually\, her album\, “The Girl in the Magazine\,” was imagined in April 2013.\nHer friend Stafford is among the musicians who lent their talents to her latest album “Write Your Name Down” recorded at Hat Creek Recording in Jonesborough\, Tennessee and will be available at the show.\nAdvanced tickets go on sale Monday\, January 30th at The Inn at Wise and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. SUMMARY:GALLAGHER! The Jokes On You Comedy Tour with Artie Fletcher and Bob Nelson
DESCRIPTION:After graduating from the University of South Florida with a chemical engineering degree\, Gallagher got\nhis first taste of life on tour in 1976 as Jim Stafford’s road manager. Stafford and Gallagher went out to\nCalifornia in 1979 and Gallagher decided to take the stage himself. He began honing his own comedy\nact while hanging out at both the Comedy Store and the Ice House. As his audience grew\, Gallagher\nbecame most noted for wielding his trademark Sledge-O-Matic. He showered his audience with the\npulverized remains of apples\, oranges\, lettuce\, cottage cheese\, and pound cakes. Show goers turn up\nalready “Gallagherized:” wearing plastic raincoats\, goggles\, sunglasses\, and refer to the front of the theatre\nas “Death Row.”\nGallagher has the distinction of being the first real star to come out of cable television. To date he has done\nsixteen specials: Uncensored Evening\, Mad as Hell\, Too Real\, Totally New\, That’s Stupid\, Stuck in the\n60’s\, The Maddest\, Melon Crazy\, The Bookkeeper\, Over Your Head\, The Messiest of Overboard\, The Leap\nYear Marathon\, We Need a Hero\, Smashing Cheeseheads\, and the most recent Sledge-O-Matic.com. The\nSledge-O-Matic DVD collection is available on EBay and Amazon.com\, and you can purchase VHS tapes\,\n2-Bak caps\, ponchos\, and additional fan gear on Gallagher’s website at www.gallaghersmash.com.\nBeing one of the most thoroughly calculating performers in the world of entertainment\, he writes all of his\nown material\, runs his own operation\, and does over 100 concerts a year\, selling out the majority of them.\nAll of Gallagher’s affairs are handled exclusively by his company Sold Out Shows. Gallagher is a self-\ncontained touring business with an agent\, promoter and road manager all in-house. For the last twenty five\nyears\, Ruth Ann Propper has booked and promoted all of Gallagher’s dates across the country. Gallagher\ncalls Propper his “Personal Promoter\,” which he says every performer needs. Due to the fact that Gallagher\nwanted to be in control of his own business\, he took off one hat as a comedian and put on another as a\npromoter and internet specialist.\nOne of the reasons Gallagher has always been a successful touring attraction is that his ticket prices are\nvery advantageous to the market. He has always been several dollars under everyone else. Gallagher’s not\ngreedy; he doesn’t ask a huge ticket price. His fans always get more than their money’s worth when they\nsee a Gallagher show\, with 110% from Gallagher. Before every show\, he has an autograph signing party in\nthe theatre\, where fans can get his autograph and a picture with him. Flash photography is allowed at every\nGallagher event.\nA Gallagher concert is an unforgettable experience. He is a keen and original observer of human nature\nand the American scene. “My humor makes people think\,” Gallagher says. “I want people to look more\nclosely at this country and their lives to see the humor and absurdity in it all …I don’t have to make it up\, the\ntruth is funny enough.”\nAdditional Facts:\nIn 2000\, Gallagher was honored by the University of South Florida as one of the most famous alumni and by\nFlorida Living Magazine as one of the top “100 Legends” of Florida.\nIn 2007 Gallagher appeared on Curtain Call with David Spatz. (A series done on classic comedy styles)\nIn 2007 Gallagher gave an interview on XM Radio for the show called “Unmasked\,” XM Radio’s new bold\ncomedy series.\nGallagher was featured on the Raw Dawg Comedy Station on Sirius Satellite Radio. The interview took\nplace in the “Fish Bowl Studio” in New York where fans were able to see the live interview and view the\nSledge-O-Matic in a new way.\nGallagher recently was featured on The History Channel’s biography called “The History of Joke Telling\,”\nwhich aired in February 2008.\nIn March 2008 Gallagher appeared on the Howard Stern Show. The interview lasted at least 1 hour and the\ncall backs were amazing. It was a chance for everyone to see and hear Gallagher in a new light.\n\n\nARTIE FLETCHER\n\n\nFACEBOOK\n\n\nArtie is one of the Entertainment Industry’s most talked-about “must-see” performers. He has performed his dynamic act in such places as Las Vegas\, Atlantic City\, Radio City Music Hall\, Westbury Music Fair\, The Toyota Comedy Festival\, The Chicago Comedy Festival and Universal Orlando…to name a few. Artie performs internationally\, performing for audiences in places as diverse as England\, Canada\, Hong Kong and ArubaHe has righteously been spotlighted in Las Vegas\, Radio City Music Hall\, Atlantic City and opened for the likes of Joan Rivers\, Regis Philbin\, Howie Mandell and Tony Bennett. Regis Philbin described Artie’s ability to entertain and adjust his act to any situation as “Just unbelievable!” Joan Rivers affirmed\, “The most interesting thing about Artie is that I’ve never seen so much energy from any person on and off stage.” Through the years Artie has met many people in the business all who have said\, “Black or White\, it doesn’t really matter\, Artie is one of the hottest entertainers to watch!”\n\n\nBOB NELSON\nWatching a Bob Nelson live performance is like watching several different types of top comedians all rolled up into one. His shows are filled with spontaneity\, zaniness and singular moments that will astound you. Throughout his career Bob Nelson has been hailed as one of the most gifted funny people on the planet.\nA contemporary of Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno\, Mr. Nelson’s extraordinary talents have been refined by a career that has included multiple appearances on the Merv Griffin Show\, the Tonight Show and David Letterman. Bob has performed live thousands of times at hundreds of comedy clubs\, colleges and other exciting live venues including the Las Vegas strip\, Radio City Music Hall and on NYC’s Broadway. He has also had the great honor to perform at the Ford Theater in Washington D.C. for president Ronald Reagan. Most recently\, he has performed on stage at The Grand Ole Opry.\nBob Nelson was Rodney Dangerfield’s opening act for eight of the most popular years of Mr Dangerfield’s career. Bob was prominently featured in two of Rodney’s enormously popular HBO stand up comedy showcases\, alongside other comedy phenoms like Rosanne Barr and Sam Kineson. That led to two HBO specials starring Bob Nelson\, including the ground breaking classic Nelson Schmelson.\nBob won an Emmy Award in Philadelphia for a children’s show he wrote and starred in. Bob has since had supporting roles in Nora Ephram’s directorial film debut This Is My Life with Julie Kavner and Ivan Reitman’s box office smash Kindergarten Cop with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bob also starred in the Zucker Brother’s Marx Brother’s take off Brain Donors.\n\n\nVenue Information:\nParamount Bristol\n518 State Street\nBristol\, TN\, 37620\nhttps://www.paramountbristol.org/
