SUMMARY:Santa's South Pole Swim
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Santa’s South Pole Swim!\nOn Saturday\, December 8\, from 6 to 8 p.m.\, bring your kids for a holiday pool party at KAC’s indoor facilities. Don’t worry—the water’s warmer than the Antarctic Ocean. In addition to regular pool time fun\, guests can join in the reindeer games\, paddle board with the elves\, and learn how to sled in the water. \nAll pre-registered kids will also be able to decorate a stocking to take home\, provided by the KAC. Extra stockings will be available on a first-come first-serve basis\, so the KAC strongly recommends pre-registering for the event to ensure your child gets to decorate a stocking. \nStocking decoration is reserved for children aged 12 and under\, but all are welcome to swim. Pre-registration costs $5 per ticket. All day-of swimmer tickets will cost $5\, and all spectator tickets are $2. Again\, pre-registration is recommended to guarantee a stocking. \nFor more information or to purchase tickets\, please call (423)343-9758. You can also register online by clicking HERE.

SUMMARY:Storytelling Summit for Young Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:The International Storytelling Center (ISC)\, home to the world-renowned National Storytelling Festival and Storytelling Live! Teller-in-Residence series\, announces it will host My Voice\, Our Place: A Young Appalachian Story Summit on Friday\, December 14 from 8 am to 4 pm. The free\, one-day event will feature an inspirational keynote\, examples of stories in action\, an interactive workshop\, and opportunities to stay involved. \nSummit participants will have the opportunity to hear from diverse voices within Appalachia who are using storytelling as a leadership tool; to understand how to take action in their own communities; and to join a network of like-minded young Appalachians to collaborate with beyond the event. The Summit will focus on the issues in Appalachia that attendees are passionate about and participants will have the opportunity to customize a one-of-a-kind agendas based on their own interests and experience. \nThe event will feature stories in action from Appalshop’s Media Institute (AMI). Since 1988\, AMI has provided opportunities for young people across Central Appalachia to explore their home communities\, address local issues\, and become thoughtful\, engaged citizens through the process of place-based media making. While documentaries made by AMI youth producers have been seen by audiences from across the United States and the world\, many pieces have had their biggest impact in local dialogues and debates surrounding issues such as domestic violence\, prejudice\, drug abuse\, and youth activism. \nAttendees will also be guided through a workshop led by award-winning storyteller and educator Adam Booth.  Participants will learn to narrate the change they wish to see in their communities using story\, including finding the right language to engage fellow Appalachians and inspire them to action. Equally at home as a teller and educator\, Booth’s research and presentations have included the Berea Appalachian Sound Archives Fellowship\, the National Academy of Medicine\, Ghost Ranch\, the National Storytelling Conference\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Voices from the Misty Mountains summer seminars and institutes. He teaches Appalachian Studies at Shepard University and is the founding director of the Speak Story Series. \n“We are honored to have the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities to make the My Voice\, Our Place Summit happen\,” said event coordinator Rachel Stiltner. “Historically\, the voices of Appalachians\, and especially those of marginalized groups within Appalachia\, have been stifled by stereotypes. Helping young Appalachians identify and tell their own stories creates leaders. And when we connect those voices to communities\, we can build a better\, truer Appalachia for young people.” \nMy Voice\, Our Place: A Young Appalachian Story Summit is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The event is free\, open to young Appalachians aged 16-30\, and limited to 50 applicants. A travel stipend is available. To learn more about the International Storytelling Center or to apply for the event\, please visit www.storytellingcenter.net or call 423-753-2171\, ext. 222.

SUMMARY:Journey's End
DESCRIPTION:Journey’s End\nDecember 18 | Downtown Bristol \n \nDecember 17\, 2018 (Bristol TN/VA) – On Tuesday\, December 18th at 6:00 PM\, Journey’s End will again take place in Historic Downtown Bristol!  Journey’s End is Bristol’s local interpretation of the Latino tradition of Las Posadas (The Inns). Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem is recreated as they go from inn to inn seeking lodging and the final inn welcomes them in and celebrates their arrival. \nHow does Bristol Celebrate Journey’s End? \nOur inns are several downtown businesses and our innkeepers are various choirs and choral groups from the Bristol area. We will begin at the Downtown Center then process by candlelight with Mary and Joseph singing the traditional songs and various carols accompanied by instrumentalists. \n\nThis year Mary will be played by Lydia McCraw and Joseph will be Nick Meredith. Along the way choirs from Redeemer Lutheran Church will be at Shanghai; Central Presbyterian Church at Cameo Theatre; Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Stateline Bar & Grille; State Street United Methodist at Cranberry Lane; Theatre Bristol at the former Wells Fargo\, and First Presbyterian Church at The Paramount Center for the Arts.  Joseph and Mary will be escorted by Prince and Lucky from Dreamland Alpacas (Please\, no dogs in attendance as we do not want to scare the live animals). \n\nAfterwards a small reception will be held at The Paramount Center for the Arts with refreshments provided by Aramark of King University.  There will be no street closure for this event\, but traffic will be slowed by a rolling police barricade. \n\nA special thank you to the Cities of Bristol\, Dr. Frank and Rev. Ann Aichinger\, Pete Buhls\, Robert Campbelle\, Marcia Cooper\, Dr. Pat Flannagan\, Samantha Gray\, Robert Greene\, Rev. Grace Kim\, Lydia McCraw\, David and Debbie McLeish of Dreamland Alpacas\, Nick Meredith\, Paramount Bristol\, Lea Powers\, Bryan Underwood\, Rev Sam Weddington\, Chris & Stephanie Yoder\, and primary event sponsors for the evening is Believe in Bristol for providing luminaries and helping hands. \n\nBe sure to stick around after Journey’s End for Bristol Virginia Senior Showchoir’s annual Christmas Show\, a beloved holiday tradition at The Paramount. This year’s show features holiday magic and pageantry along with familiar songs of the season. \n\nJourney’s End lasts a little more than an hour. Restaurants will be taking dinner reservations and several of the downtown shops will be open.  Come and celebrate Christmas in the heart of our community! \n  \nPlease visit believeinbristol.org or call 423-573-2201 for more information. \n
