SUMMARY:Town of Unicoi To Host Free Christmas Drive-In Movie November 14
DESCRIPTION:Town of Unicoi To Host Free Christmas Drive-In Movie November 14 \n\n\n\n\nUnicoi\, Tenn. — The Town of Unicoi will host its last free drive-in movie of the year Saturday\, November 14\, at 5:30 p.m. at the Tourist Information Center located at 106 Unicoi Village Place. Sound will be played through FM radio\, concessions will open at 5:30 p.m.\, a surprise visitor will arrive at 6 p.m. and the Christmas movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. \n“To finish up the year with a heart-warming Christmas favorite will give guests a little bit of hope\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “Despite the pandemic\, the holiday season is still about family and believing in the magic of the season.” \nLike past events\, the Clinchfield Caboose will support the screen with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot and event sponsor Ambrosound\, a local professional audio\, video\, lighting and staging company\, will handle all projection and audio. Organizers also tease that someone from the movie will make a surprise appearance during the festivities and have a special gift for every child. \n“I can give a little hint that the movie involves a train\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “Which will be a lot of fun since we’re showing it at the caboose. We definitely have some movie-themed surprises planned.” \n“We’ve really enjoyed the drive-in movies this year and we can’t wait for the Christmas-themed version\,” said Candice Jones\, local Unicoi resident\, mother of two and a winner of the Halloween Costume Contest held at the October movie. “It’s been hard with COVID keeping so many things either closed or canceled\, so these events have been a rare source of fun for our family.” \nConcessions will include hot dogs\, nachos and cheese\, hot chocolate\, cookies and more. The Doug Hopson Buffalo Pavilion will house the concession stand and food-handling precautions will be taken\, including masks and gloves and one person to handle money while another handles food in an effort to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 exposure. \nThe movie will start at dark and guests are asked to remain in their vehicles except for restrooms and concessions\, and only one person from each car is allowed in the concession line. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMasks are required when guests are out of the vehicle and everyone is asked to please practice social distancing. An event map may be viewed on the town’s website in addition to the announcement of which movie will be showing. \nSpecial thanks to drive-in movie sponsors Single Dad Homesteading\, Jones and Church Farms\, Reinhart Food Services\, Unicoi Walmart\, The Erwin Record\, Unicoi Dollar General and Erwin McDonalds for their generosity and support of local community events. \nFor more information or movie title\, visit the Town of Unicoi’s Facebook page at facebook.com/townofunicoitn. Information is also available on the town’s website at UnicoiTN.net. To speak to a coordinator\, contact Patricia Bennett at (423) 735-0517 or email questions to \n\n\n\n\nrecreationaide@unicoitn.net.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit - Honky Tonk: Portrait of Country Music 1972-1981
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, photographer Henry Horenstein shot album covers for upstart bluegrass label Rounder Records. But in his off-hours\, he soon became unofficial photographer to the culture of country musicians great and small\, and their dedicated fans. It’s a world that looks quite a bit like country songs sound: full of hard-working operators and lonely dreamers\, half-full glasses and scorpion belt buckles\, and a few tall hats\, boots\, and bottles as well. It’s the world of the honky tonk. \nA candid\, affectionate glimpse into the real country music scene as it was performed and lived\, Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music\, 1972—1981 is a parade through the early years of future great performers like Dolly Parton and Del McCoury\, and already established legends like Mother Maybelle Carter and Don Stover. It is a time capsule of an important era in country music set within family music parks and music festivals\, the Grand Ole Opry\, and Nashville’s Tootsies and other well-loved honky tonks. Horenstein’s lively portraits of the community preserve the scene where musicians and fans\, cowboys and townies\, converged to step out\, strum\, and strut their stuff.

SUMMARY:Freedom Stories: Jim Crow of Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Freedom Stories\nJim Crow Appalachia: Slavery by Another Name\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Juvenile Convicts at Work in the Fields”. Photograph courtesy of the Library of Congress.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe second year of ISC’s Freedom Stories series kicks off on January 9th\, 1:00-2:30pm EST with a discussion of Jim Crow Appalachia. At the end of the Civil War\, the South emerged with destroyed transportation and shipping lines\, a devastated economy\, and no labor force. The North and South agreed slavery was an unacceptable form of American labor\, but Black Americans were still an undesirable\, inferior race in need of control. Over the next 100 years\, the Appalachian South successfully re-established their system of racial caste under a new name\, “Jim Crow\,” a popular antebellum term. Join storyteller Mitch Capel\, along with Freedom Stories Director Dr. Alicestyne Turley and others as we explore the roots of Appalachian Jim Crow and its impact on how the region is viewed today.\n\nThis is a FREE event that will take place directly on ISC’s Facebook timeline. Don’t have Facebook? Don’t worry! You can still watch by clicking this ISC Facebook link\, and selecting “Not now” when prompted to create an account.\n\nFreedom Stories is funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. This initiative brings together storytelling artists\, humanities scholars\, and community experts to explore and unearth the oft-silenced narratives of Black Appalachian heritage and history. For more information about this project\, please contact FreedomStories@StorytellingCenter.net.

SUMMARY:McKinney Center Spring Open House
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts has announced their spring schedule of classes of experiential learning opportunities for both children and adults.  Registration is now underway for all upcoming classes.  All courses are led by experienced and supportive faculty in a safe and healthy environment. \n\nArt\, music\, writing\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this spring for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop the understanding and experimentation with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and process.  For older elementary aged students courses are taught to build their skills as artists including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level.  Classes in writing\, film\, music\, and dance are also available for this age range including Art Adventures\, Creative Construction\, Homeschool Art\, Kids N Clay\, Young Potters\, Let’s Make a TV Show\, Anime\, Mosaics\, Ballet\, Tap\, Adventures in Drawing\, and Guitar. \n\nOfferings for older students and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music\, and various workshops.  Director Theresa Hammons states\, “There is something for everyone here at the McKinney Center.  Most of our classes are for beginners.  But one of the great things about our offerings is that the class sizes are small\, usually no more than 8 – 10 students. So\, if you are more or less skilled\, the instructor has time to work with you one on one.” \n\nThe one-day workshop options for spring semester are extensive and include:  Introduction to the Zentangle Method of Drawing\, Zentangle – Working with Tan Tiles\, Glass Fusion workshops including Pendants\, Garden Stakes\, Sun Catches\, and Spring Plates\, several ceramic wheel workshops including Bowls\, Casserole Dish\, and Mugs\, several ceramic decorating and design workshops including Mushrooms\, Trays\, and Bird House.  There will be a Fairy Garden Cottage workshop\, a workshop on how to construct Mandalas\, Alcohol Ink\, Acrylic Painting\, Crocheting Sculpted Vessels\, Healing Soap making and a Casting and Mold Making Workshop. \n\nSave money and register early.  Early registration secures a spot in class as well as a $10 discount through January 16.  Individual class costs vary.  A Spring Open House will be held at the McKinney Center on January 16\, from 10am – 2pm.  This will be an opportunity for the public to see what the spring classes have to offer. Faculty will be present for questions and demonstrations.  The last day to register for classes is January 23\, 5pm. \n\nThe McKinney Center made many changes to their schedule of classes this past fall giving 30 minutes between classes to provide ample time for students\, faculty\, and staff to clean up and disinfect before the next class.  To do this\, a few classes had to be eliminated from the schedule\, but were replaced with more one-day workshops.  McKinney Center has also developed a few online only classes for those who prefer to take a class at home.  This spring there is an Intermediate Watercolor Painting class online. \n\nOther changes include making supply kits for individual students rather than using shared supplies\, breaks in classes to wash hands\, continuing a strict regimen of disinfecting and cleaning the building\, and providing video options for students who miss a class due to feeling ill.  To read the McKinney Center’s complete list of policies and procedures please go to mckinneycenter.com. \n\nThe McKinney Center is open to the public Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm.  Staff encourage all visitors to be at home at the McKinney Center; take a class\, participate in an exhibition\, come to a lecture\, volunteer your time\, attend a workshop\, or set up an easel on the grounds and paint.  Please check the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School Facebook page throughout the year for information about our exciting programs and events. \n\nFull descriptions of class offerings can be found online at mckinneycenter.com or by stopping by the McKinney Center\, Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm\, to pick up a catalog.  For additional information contact McKinney Center Director\, Theresa Hammons at theresah@jonesboroughtn.org or call 423.753.0562.

So\, if you are more or less skilled\, the instructor has time to work with you one on one.” \n\nArt\, music\, writing\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this spring for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop the understanding and experimentation with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and process.  For older elementary aged students\, courses are taught to build their skills as artists including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level. Offerings for teens and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music\, and various workshops. \n\nThe one-day workshop options for spring semester are extensive and include:  Introduction to the Zentangle Method of Drawing\, Zentangle – Working with Tan Tiles\, Glass Fusion workshops including Pendants\, Garden Stakes\, Sun Catches\, and Spring Plates\, several ceramic wheel workshops including Bowls\, Casserole Dish\, and Mugs\, several ceramic decorating and design workshops including Mushrooms\, Trays\, and Bird House.  There will be a Fairy Garden Cottage workshop\, a workshop on how to construct Mandalas\, Alcohol Ink\, Acrylic Painting\, Crocheting Sculpted Vessels\, Healing Soap making and a Casting and Mold Making Workshop. \n\nThe McKinney Center has made changes to their schedule of classes again this semester\, giving 30 minutes between classes to provide ample time for students\, faculty\, and staff to clean up and disinfect before the next class.  To do this\, a few classes had to be eliminated from the schedule\, but were replaced with more one-day workshops. Other changes will include providing supply kits for individual students when possible rather than using shared supplies\, breaks in classes to wash hands\, continuing a strict regimen of disinfecting and cleaning the building\, and providing video options for students who miss a class due to feeling ill.  To read the McKinney Center’s complete list of policies and procedures please go to mckinneycenter.com.  You may also pick up a hard copy catalog inside the McKinney Center or from the green mail box outside of the office doors. \n\nScholarships are available for students\, Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Students or parents can fill out applications online at mckinneycenter.com or email the Director\, Theresa Hammons for more information. \n\nFull descriptions of class offerings can be found online at www.mckinneycenter.com or by stopping by the McKinney Center\, Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm\, to pick up a catalog.  For additional information contact McKinney Center Director\, Theresa Hammons at theresah@jonesboroughtn.org or call 423.753.0562.

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives
DESCRIPTION:PARAMOUNT BRISTOL PRESENTS\n\nMARTY STUART & HIS FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES\nSUNDAY\, JANUARY 23\, 2022 @ 7PM\n \nFirst Look: HAPPENING NOW!\nMember Pre-Sale: Tuesday\, 11/16/21 at 10 AM\nPublic On-Sale: Friday\, 11/19/21 at 10 AM\n\nWith legends like George Jones\, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on\, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer\, in part\, is Marty Stuart.\nWhile he’s too gracious to admit it himself\, the Grammy-winning singer\, songwriter and musician is living\, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters\, from Cash to Lester Flatt\, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville\, Bakersfield and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Including its literal shoes: Stuart counts the brogan of Carter Family patriarch A.P. Carter and an assortment of Cash’s black boots among his vast collection of memorabilia.\nBut most importantly\, Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music\, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future. Way Out West\, his 18th studio album\, hits both of those marks. Produced by Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers)\, the album is a cinematic tour-de-force\, an exhilarating musical journey through the California desert that solidifies Stuart as a truly visionary artist.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nON SALE NOW!

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: Jim Messina
DESCRIPTION:PARAMOUNT BRISTOL PRESENTS\n\n\n\nAn Evening with Jim Messina\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSun\, January 31\, 2021\n\n\nDoors: 6:00 pm / Show: 7:00 pm\n\n\n$37-57 plus applicable taxes and fees / Members save $6 per ticket\n\nBUY TICKETS\n\n\nJim Messina has spent the last 50 years writing and singing folk\, rock and country music that has left an indelible mark on the music world. Few musical artists résumés list membership in a band inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame (Buffalo Springfield); fewer still can lay claim to being a founding member of the seminal band credited with creating Country Rock (Poco); and only one artist can include all the above in addition to being one half of the most successful duo of the 1970s (Loggins & Messina). Such is the lasting legacy of Jim Messina. His songs\, “Your Mama Don’t Dance\,” “Thinking of You\,” “You Better Think Twice\,” “Listen to a Country Song\,” “Angry Eyes\,” and “Watching the River Run” were all bona fide hits at the top of the charts. A supremely talented guitarist\, Messina\, and the newly formed Poco’s debut album\, Pickin’ Up The Pieces is the only debut album ever to receive a perfect rating from Rolling Stone Magazine; the landmark album laid the blueprint for the then new musical genre uniting country with rock music and it blazed the pathway for future multi-million selling artists like the Eagles. Loggins & Messina sold sixteen million albums\, became one of rock’s biggest live draws\, and cemented their legacy as one of the most successful recording duos ever. As a solo artist\, he has recorded four critically acclaimed solo albums. \nImagine a medley of “Traveling Blues\,” “House on Pooh Corner” and “Thinking of You”with Messina’s voice harmonizing perfectly with the band\, right here on the Paramount Bristol stage. \n“Messina is like a fine wine\, he just gets better as he ages. If you get the chance to seen him play anywhere do so.” – New England Rock Review

SUMMARY:Women of Early Country Music
DESCRIPTION:Before Coal Miner’s Daughters and Many-Colored Coats: Pioneering Women in Country Music\nJoin us on Tuesday\, February 2 for a fascinating talk with Bailey George about the women who made their mark on early country music. \nTraditionally\, the role and widespread recognition of women in country music has been relegated to a handful of “superstars” who rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s\, but female country artists have been producing records since the beginnings of country music recording. The impact of these pioneering artists has been somewhat overshadowed by flashier\, pop-oriented female artists in recent years\, but without these trailblazing recordings\, the country music industry as we know it would not exist. \nWith this talk\, Bailey George will take a look at some of the forgotten female artists\, musicians\, writers\, and performers from days long before there were coal miner’s daughters or many-colored coats. \nFree and open to the public\, but pre-registration is required.
