SUMMARY:49th Annual Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Exchange Place Living History Farm will usher in autumn when it hosts the 49 th edition\nof its Fall Folk Arts Festival. Always eagerly anticipated – and especially so after last year’s event was\ncancelled by COVID-19 — this harvest season celebration will be held on Saturday\, September 25\, from 10\nam until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 26\, from noon until 5 pm. Admission is $5\, with those\nunder the age of 12 admitted free. With major support from the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes\, all\nproceeds go towards the care of the farm’s animals and the continued restoration and preservation of the site\,\nlocated at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee. And this year\, because the virus remains a\npresence in our region\, all CDC protocols will be followed\, including keeping the historic buildings\nclosed\, and STRONGLY URGING all visitors to wear masks and maintain a safe distance from\nothers. \nArtists from around the region will gather to demonstrate 19 th century crafts\, as well as to sell a wide array of\ntraditional folk arts and hand-crafted arts of today. Plants for fall planting will also be available\, as well as\ndried flowers\, seasonal crafts\, local honey\, goat milk cheeses\, salsas and hot sauces\, and stone ground\ncornmeal\, grits and more. \nIn addition\, several acclaimed heritage artists will be on the grounds during the weekend. George\nMcCollum\, a long-time member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild\, will be making his widely-celebrated\nminiature white oak baskets (on Saturday only). Master crafter Heather Ashworth\, of the Arrowmont School\nof the Arts in Gatlinburg\, will be offering two traditional broom-making workshops on Sunday\, at noon and\nagain at 2:30 pm. Students will bind two whisk hand brooms\, using broom corn and colorful cord. The cost of\nthis unique workshop is $65 and includes all materials. Registration is required by Sunday\, September\n19\, 2021 at heather4trees@gmail.com. (It must be noted that the classes will only be held if at least five\npeople enroll.) \nA highlight of the festival will be an extensive display of historic clocks and watches curated by master clock\nmechanic Rod Groenewold and members of the Watauga Chapter of the National Association of Watch and\nClock Collectors. Rod has been fascinated by clocks and watches for more than forty years\, and now he and\nthe other members of the group will display and sell part of their collections of historic timepieces. The group\nis also inviting festival visitors to bring in clocks and watches for free appraisals. A silent auction will offer three\nantique clocks from Rod's collection to the highest bidders. One is an eight-day keywind clock that dates to\n1919\, one is a cast-iron mantle clock made in 1890\, and the third is an Ansonia Clock Company “Antler” clock\,\nmade around 1905. These clocks will be on display and can be bid on at their booth\, with the proceeds\nbenefiting Exchange Place. \nHistory is always alive throughout the farm. While the log kitchen will be closed as it undergoes a restoration\,\nthe Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, and our energetic Junior Apprentices\, will prepare some of the foods\nthe Preston family would have eaten in the mid-nineteenth century\, using the bread oven and an outdoor fire\n(weather permitting). They will also be demonstrating gourd crafting in the yard of the restored Cook’s Cabin.\nThe blacksmith’s shop will be open\, demonstrating the various tasks that made the “smithy” such a valuable\nperson in antebellum America. Behind the blacksmith’s shop\, sorghum will\, once again\, be milled and cooked\n(only on Saturday\, please note). Mules will do the milling in the morning (they will not be available for rides or\nfor petting)\, and the cooking process will be done throughout the afternoon. Our resident fiber artists – better \nknown as the Overmountain Weavers' Guild — will demonstrate the intricacies of spinning and weaving on the\nRoseland porch and in the Burow Museum. Boy Scout Troop #387 will be demonstrating rope-making\, and\nthey plan to sell whatever ropes they create\, with all proceeds being donated to Exchange Place.\nActivities for the youngsters are always prominent during these Exchange Place fetes\, and children of all ages\nwill not only get to play the kinds of games that the Preston family would have played\, but they will be\nencouraged to try their hands at some of the "chores” that were expected of young people on an antebellum\nfarm\, such as creating toys and grinding corn. \nThe traditional Fall Scarecrow Challenge will not be held this year. There will\, however\, be an area set aside\nwhere visitors can add to the creation of the Exchange Place scarecrows\, and learn their long and interesting\nhistory. However\, other popular Festival traditions remain\, including being able to meet and greet all of the\nheritage breed of animals that live on the farmstead all year long\, and listening to the wide selection of\nregional musicians who provide an Americana soundtrack to the surroundings. (A schedule is listed below\, but\nplease note that it is always subject to change.)\nOne of Exchange Place’s most popular events every year is Witches Wynd\, a Halloween-based\nstorytelling adventure. As of this writing\, no decision has been made about how\, or if\, it will be\npresented this year. An official announcement will be forthcoming. \nFor more information\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, write to\nexchangeplacefestivals@gmail.com\, or visit our website at https://www.exchangeplace.info. SUMMARY:Overmountain Victory Trail Celebration and Militia Muster
DESCRIPTION:The year was 1780\, and the tide of the American Revolution was turning against the patriot cause. The British\, forced out of New England\, gained new allies in the divided South\, and won victory after victory in a bloody civil war. Charleston had fallen to the British\, American forces had crumbled at the battle of Camden\, and things were looking very bleak for the cause of independence. Then the impossible occurred! Frontiersmen west of the blue ridge mountains began a long march\, gathering an army along the way from the highlands of Virginia to the hills of South Carolina. At a place called King’s Mountain\, they destroyed British forces and opened the way for the final American victory at Yorktown. \nThe route they took from Virginia to South Carolina\, we now know as the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Come celebrate with us as we re-live the muster of the Overmountain Men\, which occurred at Sycamore Shoals over two hundred years ago. \nJoin us at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park the weekend of Saturday and Sunday\, September 25th & 26th for the Overmountain Victory Trail Celebration and Militia Muster. This weekend will be full of events centering around the story of the Overmountain Men and their historic gathering at Sycamore Shoals. It is a must-see for the entire family. From 10:00 am until 3:00 pm each day the Overmountain Victory Trail Association and the Washington County\, NC Militia will present 18th century demonstrations and activities in and around Fort Watauga. Discover the vital role Sycamore Shoals played in the early frontier community\, and how its significance would impact our nation’s history. Re-enactors in period clothing will be on hand throughout the weekend to share stories and demonstrations of that exciting and tumultuous time. \nAt 1:00 pm On Saturday\, September 25th the Overmountain Victory Trail Association will recreate the historic 1780 river crossing when Colonel William Campbell and 400 mounted militiamen from present day Abingdon\, VA crossed the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals to join Colonels Isaac Shelby and John Sevier in response to a threat from British Major Patrick Ferguson. For the past 46 years Members of the OVTA have recreated this historic occurrence since 1975\, following the same route and timetable as their legendary forebears from Abingdon\, VA to Kings Mountain\, SC. \nLiving history programming will continue Sunday\, September 26th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm with more presentations and demonstrations by the Washington County\, NC Militia at Fort Watauga. \nWhile enjoying the activities of the weekend\, be sure to visit the award-winning museum and interpretive center\, and don’t miss the park’s interpretive film “Sycamore Shoals – Story of the American Spirit”. Also visit the park’s Book and Gift Shop to take home a special souvenir or a gift for the history buff or avid reader in your family. These fun-filled and action-packed events are sure to entertain and educate all ages. Most events are free of charge so bring the entire family and relive some of the most crucial days of the American Revolution. SUMMARY:Lamplight Theatre presents "Charnel House"
DESCRIPTION:Lamplight Theatre presents\n“Charnel House”\nOct 1st-22nd\n\nAre you ready to enter the Mortality Room and come face to face with fear? The Fall brings great harvest festivals and the harmless fun of haunted houses to many small towns. But to Kingsport\, Tennessee\, it brings terror to the characters in “Charnel House.” This production sheds some light on the history of “All Hallows Eve” steeped in pagan customs and the ever growing popularity of the practice of witchcraft. Tattie Bogal (An evil scarecrow) will introduce you to Samhain (Demon of the Dead)\, a host of Demon Scarecrows\, and of course\, Muck Olla (The Boogey Man – Reaper of Souls). Beware of other creatures that go “bump in the night.” If you aren’t careful\, Muck Olla will deceive you into believing his lies as he unleashes his plethora of demonic spirits. When this hellish troupe comes to town\, several teenagers are hoodwinked by the power of The Boogey Man who is out to reap their souls. Some fall prey to his traps. Little do they know the eternal impact that this encounter will have on their mortal lives. Their destiny in the “after-life” hangs in the balance as choices are made under the influence of principalities and dark forces.\n\nLampLight Theatre’s “Charnel House” is not for the weak at heart. Due to its true-to-life situations and scary images\, this show is rated PG-13. Performances will be weekends October 1st through 31st. There will be two shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30PM & 9PM. Sunday night performances at 6:30PM.\n\nThe show’s seating is general admission at $12. No reservations are necessary\, however they are recommended to guarantee times and seating. Concessions and gift shop will be available from 5:30PM until 9:00PM.
