Most career AB (14\,053) ever. 17 time All-Star. 7 time MLB Hits leader. 3 time MLB Runs leader. 3 time World Series Champ. 1975 World Series MVP. 2 time MLB Batting Champ. 1973 NL MVP. 1963 NL Rookie of the Year. He got the nickname “Charlie Hustle” for a reason. Join Pete as he talks about\, baseball\, the Hall of Fame and just his life in general. This show will be loaded with great stories from a legendary baseball player.\n\nPeter Edward Rose Sr. (born April 14\, 1941)\, also known by his nickname “Charlie Hustle“\, played Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1963 to 1986\, most prominently as a member of the Cincinnati Reds lineup known as the Big Red Machine for their dominance of the National League in the 1970s. He also played for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Montreal Expos. During and after his playing career\, he served as the manager of the Reds from 1984 to 1989. In August 1989 (his last year as a manager and three years after retiring as a player)\, Rose was penalized with permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on baseball games while he played for and managed the Reds; the charges of wrongdoing included claims that he bet on his own team. In 1991\, the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those on the “permanently ineligible” list from induction\, after previously excluding such players by informal agreement among voters. After years of public denial\, Rose admitted in 2004 that he bet on baseball and on the Reds. The issue of his possible reinstatement and election to the Hall of Fame remains contentious throughout baseball.\n\nThe event will feature a popular local guest moderator\, Steve Hawkins.\n\nSteve retired after a 46-year career in TV news\, talk radio and media relations. He was a sports reporter for WCYB-TV when Pete Rose was an integral part of the Big Red Machine\, and when Pete transitioned to the Philadelphia Phillies; Steve was able to track Charlie Hustle’s achievements on the field on a daily basis for the first three years of his career in television.\n\nWhile a student at ETSU\, Steve began working fulltime in sports for WCYB-TV. Over the next 35 years\, he was sports director\, news anchor\, executive producer and\, for 25 years\, news director. He transitioned to talk radio in 2011 for three years and then completed his career working in media relations for Alpha Natural Resources. Steve also taught news writing and reporting at ETSU for 35 years.\n\nDoors open at 6:30pm. Showtime is 7:30pm. Our Box Office opens 2 hours before showtime. For shows not already sold out\, tickets will be available at the door on the day of show for an additional cost of $5 (+tax and service fee). BUYER BEWARE! Sales under $25 are cash only. The half-price sale begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday\, while the $10 bag sale begins at opening on Sunday. The Regional Interest category will have books from the FoxFire series\, Jefferson Bass\, Adriana Trigiani\, to cookbooks from local churches and civic groups. \n\nClassic and contemporary books on WWII will be in the History/Biography category. Readers of romance will be especially happy with the depth of the paperback fiction donations\, both classic and ‘almost new’ tales of happily-ever-after. A category for Sports and Transportation will contain books on professional athletes\, sports\, fitness\, automobiles\, trains\, and airplanes\, while birders and other nature lovers will find gems in the Nature and Outdoors category. \n\nProfits from the book fair go to support local literacy programs. Last year\, the book fair had sales of more than $35\,000. \n\nFor more information or to volunteer your time call 423-967-7135 or email kingsportbookfair@gmail.com. \n\nAbout the Kingsport Book Fair \nIn 1961\, the Kingsport Branch of the American Association of University Women held the first Book Fair. Every other year through 2011\, AAUW collected books and multimedia items for the Book Fair\, growing it from a few tables to thousands of boxes filling all the tables in the Kingsport Civic Auditorium. The Friends of the Kingsport Public Library joined the Book Fair with the 2007 sale. Beginning with the 2012 Book Fair\, FOL and the First Book – Greater Kingsport continued the tradition on an annual basis. As with the original Book Fair\, the profits continue to be used locally to support literacy and educational programs. \nAbout Kingsport Public Library \nThe Kingsport Public Library\, founded in 1921 as the Kingsport Book Club\, has been a part of the City of Kingsport since 1929. In 1961\, the library moved to its current Broad Street location. Today it serves the residents of Kingsport by providing access to a variety of materials and services to support their informational\, educational\, and recreational needs. For more information\, please visit www.kingsportlibrary.org. \nAbout the City of Kingsport \nFounded in 1917\, the City of Kingsport (pop. 55\,400) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern United States. The city is widely known as a planned community\, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3\,750-acre park\, nature preserve\, planetarium and observatory. Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” For more information\, please visit www.kingsporttn.gov.
