SUMMARY:Jonesborough Yarn Exchange: An Evening of Haunting Thrills
DESCRIPTION:Comes to Yarn Exchange Radio Show \nThis month\, the Yarn Exchange Radio Show has a program filled with the Halloween Spirit. On October 22 at 7PM at the International Storytelling Center\, local haunted lore will come to life on stage as the cast performs true tales of the mysterious. \nAmong the stories that evening will be one about David Samms and his teenage adventure to Lost Cove Settlement\, and becoming stranded there overnight\, where a series of bizarre and chilling events forced the boys out of the house where they took refuge. Other stories included come from a strange encounter by Brenda G’Fellers\, a ghostly occurrence at the home of Sue Henley\, a frightening visit from the grave to two college friends\, and a very mysterious guest who makes an annual appearance on Depot Street. More mysterious tales are pulled from the Washington County archives of Mr. February\, and finally\, Anne G’Fellers-Mason will divulge the secret of who the ghost of the Chester Inn really is. \nJoining the cast this month will be a musical guest favorite- the David Crockett High School Madrigal Singers\, led by Kelly Davenport. They will sing several songs during the show\, highlighting the incredible vocal talent residing in this county. \nThis production\, which is performed as an old-fashioned radio show in front of a live audience\, has limited seating. Tickets are only $5 and are available online at Jonesborough.com/tickets and also by calling the Visitors Center at 423-753-1010. The program is supported in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and Ballad Health\, and is part of the McKinney Center and Jonesborough’s Mary B. Martin Program for the Arts.

SUMMARY:History of the State Line
DESCRIPTION:Contact: Tim Buchanan\nBristol Historical Association\n(276) 669-3885\nbuchanan03@bvu.net \nHistory of the State Line is topic of BHA Meeting. \nBristol Virginia – On Monday\, October 22 the Bristol Historical Association will welcome Lorna Hainesworth who will speak on the history of our local state line. Her program is entitled\, “First Four Surveys on the 36º 30′ Parallel: Dividing Line Betwixt VA & NC\, KY & TN.” You might have wondered how this line was created\, and in particular\, why is this line so crooked? Ms. Hainesworth is on a month-long nationwide tour telling the story of one of the nation’s earliest dividing lines. Also included is a little known survey conducted by Meriwether Lewis at the dividing line in November 1806 near present-day Cumberland Gap. \nThe PowerPoint presentation will detail the controversies\, relevant issues\, and historic figures who played a part of in the dividing line between Virginia\, North Carolina\, Kentucky and Tennessee. This state line was directly responsible for the eventual development of Bristol Virginia-Tennessee making its location unique in the nation. For two centuries\, and as far back as Colonial America\, the dividing line along the 36º 30′ Parallel was in legal dispute. \nA Maryland resident\, Hainesworth Lorna is an independent scholar who has done extensive research on the Lewis and Clark Expedition\, the Historic National Road\, the History of United States Land Surveying\, along with the lives of the relevant surveyors. She is an Ambassador and National Traveler\, and is a researcher for numerous organizations\, including the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation\, the National Road Associations\, and others. \nShe has written two books describing her travels\, one on Route 66 and the other on the Lewis and Clark Trail. Lorna has contributed articles to the Maryland Historic National Road website and to several publications such as “We Proceeded On” and “The Portolan.” Her work also appears on Academia.edu. Lorna is a graduate of Oshkosh University in Wisconsin and Cornell University in New York. Her employment included work as a teacher and as a federal employee. In retirement\, she has given numerous presentations across the nation. \nThe October 22 meeting is open to the public and held in conjunction with the library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”. Contact Tim Buchanan\, program chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, buchanan03@bvu.net. Get more details on Facebook at BRISTOL HISTORY.

SUMMARY:Erwin Elephant Revival Auction
DESCRIPTION:Erwin has a new story to tell. One that is colorful and full of redemption.  Today\, standing watch over this historic downtown\, are eight baby elephant statues. They are cheerfully painted with vibrant hues and themes that would melt even the coldest heart.  Smiles can be seen on every corner of the street\, from the elephants and thousands of visitors alike.\n\nBorn in 2016\, a series of fundraisers and public awareness events known as the “Erwin Elephant Revival” was created as atonement for the tragic death of a circus elephant named Big Mary.  This gentle creature was forced to perform in Spark’s Circus in nearby  Kingsport \,Tennessee.  On September 16\, 1916\, Mary had a very bad day.  During a downtown parade she was pushed beyond her limits\, and accidentally killed her inexperienced trainer. Crowd hysteria and mob mentality prevailed\, and poor Mary was sentenced to die.  Without adequate firepower to complete the task\, the circus owner hung his star attraction in the Clinchfield rail yard in Erwin the next day.  For the last 100 years\, locals have wished they could bury this undeserved stigma along with Marys bones\, under the old roundhouse.  Songs have been sung\, books have been written\, and playwrights have enacted this sad story over and over again.  A new generation of Erwin locals decided that they had lived with “the elephant in the room” long enough.  They could not save Mary\, but they can make a difference in the lives of modern day elephants.\n\nDue to the overwhelming generosity of our community\, over $15\,000 has been donated for the care of ten elderly captive elephants at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald\, Tennessee in the last two years. This 2\,700 acre natural habit provides space\, comfort\, and 24 hour veterinary care for suffering elephants who have spent most of their lives on public display in zoos or circuses.   Mary would have been happy there.\n\nThe 2018 Erwin herd will be auctioned off on October 20\, at 12:00 pm in the Gathering Place Park in Downtown Erwin.  100% of the proceeds of this public art project benefit local non-profits as well as two elephant charities. For those unable to attend the live auction\, a proxy bid form can be found at erwintn.org.  Please contact Jamie Rice 423-220-7624 for any further questions. #erwinelephantrevival\, #showyourtrunk

SUMMARY:Chubby Checker
DESCRIPTION:Orchestra: $40 | Mezzanine: $35 | Balcony: $30 \nIn 1959\, Chubby Checker rose to national prominence with his debut record\, The Class. Chubby’s smash hit\, “The Twist\,” quickly rose to #1 on the Billboard Pop chart and the popular dance that accompanies the song was made famous by Checker with his performance on American Bandstand in 1960. The concept of “dancing apart to the beat” was born and endless songs incorporating “The Twist” into its name sprang up such as “Peppermint Twist\,” “Twist and Shout” and “Twistin’ the Night Away.” At the forefront was Chubby with “The Fly\,” “The Pony” and “The Hucklebuck.” \nThe next few years were prolific for Chubby as hit followed hit. In 1961\, Chubby recorded the #1 hit “Pony Time” which stayed on the charts for 16 weeks. In between recording and touring\, Chubby took time to add feature films to his portfolio with the releases of “Don’t Knock the Twist” and “Twist Around the Clock.” \nChubby Checker remains in the spotlight with his high-energy performances that continue to bring the nostalgia of time gone by to his many fans.

SUMMARY:History Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:The Birthplace of Country Music in Bristol will be bringing the history of country music to Jonesborough on Thursday\, October 18! \n\nRene Rodgers\, the head curator of the museum\, will be the speaker for this month’s History Happy Hour program. The topic of her talk will be the “Bristol Sessions\,” a series of influential recordings that were integral to the early development of country music and recorded in Bristol. Learn the larger history of the influential recording sessions and hear stories about some of the lesser-known artists from the Sessions. These stories are based on objects and oral histories from their family members. \n\nHistory Happy Hour is a collaborative program in its second year at the Chester Inn Museum. The programs are on the 3rd Thursday each month at 6:30 pm\, and they are free and open to the public.
