SUMMARY:Jonesborough Storytown: Life Lines
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center’s StoryTown program will bring to life a brand-new play this February and March as Life Lines is set to open its world premiere. Written by Jules Corriere\, this play is based on more than a thousand pages of oral story transcripts collected from area residents. Real-life characters and moments in local history take the stage as this moving play explores a common question: How to keep a community (or a family\, or a life) together\, as outside forces and influences work to pull them apart. \nAn important storyline in the play revolves around the story of Old Butler\, which was flooded in 1948 by the TVA in order to create Lake Watauga. A dozen members from the Old Butler Community were interviewed for these scenes\, including Joyce Dean Garrison\, Ella Mae Wiggins\, Billy Milhorn\, and Herman Tester. The Butler community\, which began in the late 1700’s\, was systematically dismantled over the course of one year\, with houses being moved on trailers to new locations\, including Johnson City\, Elizabethton\, Telford and beyond. Homes were saved\, but the geographical community was not. However\, residents decided to keep the community of heart together\, and continue to hold annual reunions to this day. Butler descendants Kate Pierce and Beverly Harrison are actors in the production. \nThe play is filled with true-life characters who have overcome floods and fires\, including new Jonesborough residents Angie and Ivan Millan\, who located to Jonesborough after the devastating Hurricane Maria and the floods in Puerto Rico. Importantly\, the scenes in the play illustrate how different facets of community and family come together to serve as “Life Lines” to each other during times of trouble. \nA sign interpreter will be available for one performance on February 29th at 2:00 p.m. for the hearing impaired. \nTickets for Life Lines are $12 general admission\, $10 senior/student. The play opens February 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the McKinney Center in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. It will also be performed on February 29 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m.\, March 1 at 2:00 p.m.\, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.\, March 7 at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. and March 8 at 2:00 p.m. For tickets\, call the Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423.753.1010 or purchase online at jonesborough.com/lifelines. \nThis play is sponsored in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Storytown Radio Show: Fair Play
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Alliance Takes on the Airways For February Production \nAnne G’Fellers-Mason\, Director of the Heritage Alliance\, is no stranger to the StoryTown Radio Show. She has played an active role on the popular monthly production for six years. But Mason will take the helm for the February 24 production\, “Fair Play\,” which will be presented at 7:00 PM at the International Storytelling Center. \n\nJules Corriere\, writer and director of the StoryTown Radio Show\, asked her good friend and colleague Anne G’Fellers-Mason to write this episode\, so Corriere could focus on the upcoming community play\, Life Lines\, which will perform its opening night later in the week. The two playwrights have collaborated often through the years\, and Corriere felt that Mason was the perfect choice. \n\nJoining the cast for this performance will be the popular singing group\, “We Five\,” specializing in Gospel music. This group has performed with the Yarn Exchange several times through the years\, and was the very first music guest on the radio show. The music group’s story\, consequently\, is featured in this year’s Life Lines community play\, as well. \n\nTickets for StoryTown Radio show are $5 and may be purchased at the Visitors Center\, or by calling 423-753-1010 or online at Jonesborough.com/tickets. \n\nLife Lines tickets are also available at the same number. Both projects are sponsored in part by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Abingdon Sessions at Barter Theatre: Acoustic Syndicate
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 22nd\n\n\n\nAcoustic Syndicate\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, February 22nd @ Barter Theatre \n \nGenre: Rock\, Folk\, Bluegrass \nFor Fans Of: Railroad Earth\, Greensky Bluegrass\, Hot Buttered Rum \n \nTickets: Start at $25 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nCo-Bill  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAcoustic Syndicate\n\n\nAcoustic Syndicate is a musical institution. Since 1994\, their unique blend of bluegrass instruments\, rock sensibilities\, and conscious songwriting has inspired a generation of musicians. Through 7 albums\, thousands of performances\, and tens-of-thousands of miles\, Acoustic Syndicate has long been heralded as one of the important influences on the modern roots-music revival. \n\nAlways a family affair\, the band is fronted by Steve McMurry on guitar and vocals\, and his cousin Bryon McMurry on banjo\, guitar\, and vocals. Their signature three-part harmony is rounded out by Bryon’s brother Fitz on drums and vocals. Jay Sanders holds down the bass with style\, while dobro maestro Billy Cardine completes the quintet with his world-renowned tone and precision. \n\n“Their modern take on traditional bluegrass and rock values culminates in a glimmering\, driving sound rich with acoustic textures and glowing vocals\,” said Paul Kerr\, of JamBase. \n\nIf there was ever a band that could capture the universal truths of life from the roots up\, it’s Acoustic Syndicate. \n\n\nRob Ickes & Trey Hensley\n\n\n“Two musical phenoms.”—NPR”Dual lightning strikes in a bottle.”—Guitar Player”If you love the sound of white-knuckle flat picking and barking squareneck resonator\, you’ll flip over World Full of Blues…dueling like Afghan kite fighters\, and backed by upright bass\, drums\, percussion\,B-3\, and horns\, the two acoustic virtuosos work the intersecting lines of blues\, bluegrass\, and traditional country while adding fresh moves of their own.”— Premier Guitar. \nTake a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the year and a Tennessee guitar prodigy who made his Opry debut at the age of 11 and you have Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley\,a GRAMMY-nominated powerhouse acoustic duo that has blown minds in the acoustic music scene. Known for their white-hot picking and high-lonesome vocals\, Ickes and Hensley meld together blues\,bluegrass\, country rock and other string band music of all kinds to form a signature blend of music that defies restrictions of genre. Ickes co-founded the group Blue Highway and has been a sought-after Nashville session player and live performing musician for decades\, with credits to his name such as Vince Gill\, Earl Scruggs\, Merle Haggard\, Alan Jackson\, Reba McEntire and Alison Krauss.  Hensley has been called “Nashville’s hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine and his soulful baritone vocals have received acclaim as well. Influenced by repertoires as diverse as The Allman Brothers Band\, Ray Charles\, Merle Haggard and Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Hensley has shared stages with artists such as Johnny Cash\, Steve Wariner\, and Peter Frampton. As a duo\, Ickes and Hensley have shared the stage and collaborated with Tommy Emmanuel\, Taj Mahal\, David Grisman\, and Jorma Kaukonen & Hot Tuna — all enthusiastic admirers of the duo — as well as Luther Dickinson of North Mississippi All Stars\, Molly Tuttle\, and many more. Ickes and Hensley have gained some added grit and a nod to the roots side of Americana aided by GRAMMY-winning producer Brent Maher on the duo’s third Compass Records album\,WORLD FULL OF BLUES\, (set to be released Oct. 4\, 2019). Blues great Taj Mahal provides his unmistakable mojo to the title track and country music legend Vince Gill guests on an inspired rendition of cover of the Grateful Dead’s moonshiner song\, “Brown-Eyed Women.” The project\, which includes a range of songs that could be on a vintage Sun Records recording to Trey’s more traditional country originals\, concludes with a smoking hot rendition of blues/rock guitarist Robben Ford’s “Rugged Road.” Ickes and Hensley have performed in places as close to home as Nashville’s world famous Station Innand as far away as Denmark’s Tonder Festival. They’ve played many prestigious music festivals\,including Telluride Bluegrass\, ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival\, AmericanaFest\, Rockygrass\, ROMP\, Wintergrass\, Bluegrass Underground\, Vancouver Island Music Festival\, Guitar Town\, Sisters Folk Festival\, the Freshgrass Festival and several others. They will perform at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival with Buddy Miller in Oct. 2019 and set sail from Miami to St. Croix and Antigua on the Cayamo Cruise alongside Brian Wilson\, Jeff Tweedy\, Mavis Staples\, Rodney Crowell and others Feb. 2020.Several more tour dates are planned with Taj Mahal\, their “World Full of Blues” collaborator\, in 2020. The duo were key players on “Original\,” the recent highly lauded Compass album by bluegrass giant Bobby Osborne; their participation garnered a Recorded Event Of The Year Award for Bobby’s version of“Got To Get A Message To You” on that album at this year’s IBMA Awards; they also were on the 2016 Recorded Event winner\, ”Fireball\,” featuring Special Consensus\, in 2016

In 1994\, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko\, founder of the Russian National Ballet\, focused on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works\, and developing new talents throughout Russia\, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works which continue to enlighten\, inspire\, and entertain audiences across the continent. \nTicket Fee: Additional $2.00 per ticket\nNo processing or delivery fees \nONLINE BUNDLE INSTRUCTIONS:\nFor online bundle purchases\, please choose the button that corresponds with the number of performances (5-10) you would like to purchase.  In the blank\, please enter the number of SEATS you would like to purchase for each performance.  Please note\, for online bundle purchases\, you are required to purchase the same number of seats for each performance.  If you wish to purchase more than 10 performances\, please call the box office at 423.638.1679.  If you wish to purchase a different number of seats for each bundle performance\, please call the box office at 423.638.1679. \nGift cards may only be redeemed in person or by phone at the NPAC Box Office 423.638.1679.

SUMMARY:Abingdon Sessions at Barter Theatre: Hayes Call
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 21st\n\n\nHayes Carll\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 21st @ Barter Theatre \n \nGenre: Singer Songwriter\, Outlaw Country\, Americana \nFor Fans Of: Jason Isbell\, Robert Earl Keen\, Justin Townes Earl \n \nTickets: Start at $30 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpener TBD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe chorus to the title track on the new Hayes Carll album\, What It Is\, is a manifesto. \n\nWhat it was is gone forever / What it could be God only knows. \nWhat it is is right here in front of me / and I’m not letting go. \n\nHe’s embracing the moment. Leaving the past where it belongs\, accepting there’s no way to know what’s ahead\, and challenging himself to be present in both love and life. It’s heady stuff. It also rocks. \n\nWith a career full of critical acclaim and popular success\, Carll could’ve played it safe on this\, his sixth record\, but he didn’t. The result is a musically ambitious and lyrically deep statement of an artist in his creative prime. *Now on NPR’s Top Albums of 2019 List* \n\nHayes Carll’s list of accomplishments is long. His third album\, 2008’s Trouble In Mind\, earned him an Americana Music Association Award for  Song of the Year (for “She Left Me for Jesus”). The follow-up\, KMAG YOYO was the most played album on the Americana Chart in 2011 and spawned covers by artists as varied as Hard Working Americans and Lee Ann Womack\, whose version of “Chances Are” garnered Carll a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song. 2016’s Lovers and Leavers swept the Austin Music Awards\, and was his fourth record in a row to reach #1 on the Americana Airplay chart.  Kelly Willis and Kenny Chesney have chosen to record his songs and his television appearances include The Tonight Show\, Austin City Limits\, and Later w/Jools Holland. Carll is the rare artist who can rock a packed dancehall one night and hold a listening room at rapt attention the next. \n\n“Repeating myself creatively would ultimately leave me empty. Covering new ground\, exploring\, and taking chances gives me juice and keeps me interested.” \n\nHe knew he wanted to find the next level. On What It Is\, he clearly has. \n\nIt wasn’t necessarily easy to get there. Carll’s last release\, 2016’s Lovers and Leavers was an artistic and commercial risk — a bold move which eschewed the tempo and humor of much of his previous work. The record revealed a more serious singer-songwriter dealing with more serious subjects — divorce\, new love in the middle of life\, parenting\, the worth of work. What It Is finds him now on the other side\, revived and happy\, but resolute — no longer under the impression that any of it comes for free. \n\n“I want to dig in so this life doesn’t just pass me by. The more engaged I am the more meaning it all has. I want that to be reflected in the work.” \n\n\n\n\nAnd meaning there is. Carll sings “but I try because I want to\,” on the album’s opening track\, “None’Ya.” He’s not looking back lamenting love lost\, rather\, finding joy and purpose in the one he’s got and hanging on to the woman who sometimes leaves him delightedly scratching his head. “If I May Be So Bold\,” finds him standing on similar ground \n— lyrically taking on the challenge of participating fully in life rather than discontentedly letting life happen. \n\nThere’s no wishy washy here and he’s not on the sidelines. In fact\, he’s neck-deep in life. On the rambunctious\, fiddle-punctuated\, “Times Like These\,” he laments political division in America while delivering a rapid-fire plea to “do my labor\, love my girl\, and help my neighbor\, while keeping all my joie de vivre.” Carll’s signature cleverness and aptitude for so-personal-you-might-miss-it political commentary is as strong as ever. The stark\, “Fragile Men\,” co-written with singer-songwriter Lolo\, uses humor and dripping sarcasm to examine his gender’s resistance to change in less than three minutes of string-laden\, almost Jacques Brel invoking drama. It’s new musical territory for Carll\, and the result is powerful. His voice is strong and resonant on these songs\, and it’s thrilling to hear him use it with a new authority. He is alternately commanding and tender\, yet always soulful. \n\nCarll returned to trusted producer Brad Jones (producer of 2008’s Trouble in Mind and 2011’s KMAG YOYO) and Alex the Great Studio in Nashville\, Tennessee\, to record What It Is\, and recruited singer-songwriter\, author\, and fiancee Allison Moorer as co-producer. The production is adventurous while keeping the focus on the singer and his songs and providing a path for him to go where he wants to go. Where that is\, is forward. \n\nThat’s evident in the songwriting. Carll continues to hone his singular voice\, but is also a flexible co-writer. Matraca Berg\, Charlie Mars\, Adam Landry\, and Moorer have co-writing credits here\, but it was Moorer’s inspiration that provided the largest impact. \n\n“On the songwriting front she’s just a pro. She helps me cut through the noise and she does it with wit and style.” \n\nCarll’s own wit and style has never been more evident. Whether it’s with the put-you-in-picture detail of\, “Beautiful Thing\,” the not quite sheepish enough\, dude-esque defense of dishonesty in\, “Things You Don’t Wanna Know\,” or the strong as a tree trunk declaration of love on\, “I Will Stay\,” he displays an increasing command of his poetic lexicon. \n\nWriters most often wrestle with experience and expectations\, either romanticizing the past or telling us how good it’s going to be when they get where they’re going. What It Is is a record that is rooted solidly in the present\, revealing an artist in the emotional and intellectual here and now.

SUMMARY:Abingdon Sessions at Barter Theatre: Asleep at the Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 15th\n\n\nAsleep At The Wheel\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, February 15th @ Barter Theatre \n \nGenre: Western Swing\, Country Rock \nFor Fans Of: Junior Brown\, BR549\, Dwight Yoakam \n \nTickets: Start at $35 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpener TBD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“New Routes” the brand-new album by Asleep At the Wheel\, marks both a new path forward and a nod to the freewheeling roots (get it?) of one of Texas’ most beloved bands. After a decade of collaborating on record with friends\, including Willie Nelson on 2009’s Grammy Nominated “Willie and the Wheel” and in 2015 their critically acclaimed and Grammy winning tribute to the groundbreaking music of Western Swing pioneer Bob Wills\, titled “Still the King”. With “New Routes” the Wheel has released their first album of new material in over a decade! \nWith a fresh new lineup\, a bracing blend of original songs and vibrant cover material and some unanticipated new musical tangents\, Asleep At the Wheel demonstrates convincingly it’s more relevant\, enjoyable and musically nimble than any time in its 49 year history! \n\nThe 6’7” Benson has been the one constant in Asleep At the Wheel since the band’s founding in 1970 in Paw Paw\, West Virginia. Since that time\, more than 100 musicians have passed through the Wheel\, but Benson remains the front man and the keeper of the vision\, in the process racking up more than 25 albums\, ten Grammy awards and literally millions of miles on the road. \n\n “It took me 60 years\, but I’m doing what I’m meant to do—singing and playing and writing better than I ever have. A bandleader is just someone who gathers people around them to play the best music they can play. I just try and make the best decisions possible and kick some ass every night onstage.” \n\nKatie Shore follows in the long tradition of strong and talented female performers who have been an integral part of the band’s identity for decades. Shore says. “I always wanted to be in Asleep At the Wheel\,” she said. “If you grew up in Fort Worth and played the fiddle\, it was impossible not to know who the Wheel was. I feel part of a legacy\, for sure.” \n\n“This was a chance to re-invent the Wheel\,” said Benson. “These are creative folks who can add stuff. I’m just the bandleader\, so if I don’t have contributions from everybody\, then the Wheel doesn’t roll.” \n\nNew Routes\, he said\, “is a pure distillation of where the band is right now\,” Benson declared. “It gives me the palette that I’ve always wanted\,” he added. “To be in Asleep at the Wheel you gotta be able to play Bob Wills\, Country music\, Louis Jordan\, Count Basie etc… Every night I’m excited to play music with this lineup”

SUMMARY:Abingdon Sessions at Barter Theatre: Jill Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 14th\n\n\n\n\n\nJill Andrews\n\n\nA native of East Tennessee\, Jill Andrews kicked off her songwriting career as co-founder of the everybodyfields\, a band whose mix of Southern genres – folk\, country\, bluegrass – and male-female vocals helped pave the way for future groups like The Civil Wars. It earned the everybodyfields a wide fan-base too\, as well as appearances at Bonnaroo\, The Kennedy Center\, and a cross-country tour with The Avett Brothers. After three albums\, Andrews left that band and launched a solo career\, starting with a self-titled EP and a full-length record\, The Mirror\, that built something bigger a broader on top of her Americana roots. She followed The Mirror with the acclaimed The War Inside featuring a duet with Seth Avett. \nWhile working on The War Inside\, Andrews signed a publishing deal and began landing songs in multiple TV shows and movies\, including Grey’s Anatomy\, The Good Wife\, Nashville\, American Idol\, Hart of Dixie\, and Me\, Him\, Her (2015)\, among others\, including the theme song to SyFy’s Wynonna Earp. One of her songs\, “Joy Parade\,” also appeared on The Music of Nashville: Season 2\, Volume 2\, a TV soundtrack that rose to number 13 on the Billboard 200. \nSince releasing The War Inside\, Andrews has remained busy touring and writing\, opening shows for acts such as The Avett Brothers\, Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors\, Sean Watkins\, and Mandolin Orange\, as well as headlining her own shows throughout the country. Collaborations with friends like Langhorne Slim and Peter Groenwald have led to the digital release of a handful of duet singles and the release of Hush Kids\, the eponymous and inaugural album by the band she founded with Groenwald. These songs feel present\, and they’re delivered the way Andrews always delivers them: with raw emotion that is as real to her as it is to the listener. \n\nMost recently\, she has wrapped up recording on what will be her next album\, singles from which are starting to be released and are available now. The album is due out in early 2020 and is the first effort co-produced by Andrews. It promises to be some of her most personal work to date. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 14th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Josh Ritter\, The Milk Carton Kids\, Mandolin Orange\, John Cowan\, Vince Gill \n \nTickets: Start at $20 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nCo-Bill  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrooke & Darin Aldridge\n\n\nHusband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge draw on the traditions of their native North Carolina\, the savvy of a young\, gifted band and their own dedication to ingenuity to create the most adventurous album of their career with their latest critically acclaimed release\, Inner Journey. \n The duo has placed several tracks at the top of the charts on Roots\, SiriusXM\, Bluegrass and Gospel charts. They have received multiple nominations from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and Inspirational Country Music (ICM). Their music videos “Wildflower” and “Tennessee Flat Top Box” and most recently “Every Time You Leave” were heavily featured on outlets including CMT\, CMT Edge\, GAC\, Bluegrass Ridge TV and The Bluegrass Situation. TV appearances include PBS\, Great American Gospel\, The Bluegrass Road\, RFD-TV\, Blue Highways TV\, Songs of the Mountain\, Woodsongs\, Larry’s Country Diner and Music City Roots. \nBoth highly acclaimed vocalists in their own right (Brooke is the 3-time reigning IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year)\, Darin and Brooke combine rich harmonies with impeccable musicianship to create the unmistakable sound that has made them one of the hottest young acts in acoustic music and they’ve surrounded themselves with a band of equally amazing pickers. Darin spent 6 years as a member of the acclaimed County Gentleman and is a highly sought-after multi-instrumentalist. Brooke has been lauded for having one of the most powerful voices in music of any genre. Darin was named the IBMA’s Momentum Mentor of the Year in 2017 for his efforts at teaching and mentoring youth on guitar and mandolin and for giving unselfishly of his time and talents at public events at places like the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby\, NC \n \n\nThere’s a lot about the new generation of bluegrass that sure is inspiring. And Darin and Brooke are two of my favorites of this great new generation. I’m flattered that they included me in their new record and even better\, to find out they are equally as great as people”. \n~Vince Gill \n“Brooke asserts herself as one of the more powerful female vocalists on the scene…” \n~Relix Magazine \n“Husband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge have carved out one of the fastest rising careers on the acoustic music scene today.” \n~Billboard Magazine
