SUMMARY:Sweetheart of the Rodeo with Special Guest Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives
DESCRIPTION:ROGER MCGUINN AND CHRIS HILLMAN CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OFSweetheart of the Rodeowith Special Guest Marty Stuart & His Fabulous SuperlativesDECEMBER 1STTICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\nROGER MCGUINN AND CHRIS HILLMAN CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF Sweetheart of the Rodeo with Special Guest Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives\n$82-127 plus applicable taxes and fees / Members save $5 per ticket \n\nTICKETS Sat\, December 1\, 2018 @ Paramount Bristol Doors: 7:00 pm / Show: 8:00 pm\n\nThe Byrds co-founders Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the band’s pioneering album “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” on a national tour that is coming to The Paramount! Country all-star Marty Stuart and his amazing band join McGuinn and Hillman onstage\, where they will perform songs and tell the stories behind the 1968 LP\, one of the milestones in American Music. After kicking off in Los Angeles\, the tour has a short run and is selling out much larger venues – from New York’s Town Hall to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime event! \nWith one mighty swing of the axe\, The Byrds changed not only the face of rock ’n’ roll but country music\, as well\, with their sixth album\, 1968’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Featuring a repertoire of country classics by the Louvin Brothers (“The Christian Life”) and Merle Haggard (“Life in Prison”)\, as well as Depression-era ballads (Woody Guthrie’s “Pretty Boy Floyd”) and honky tonk weepers cut by George Jones (“You’re Still On My Mind”) as well as Dylan tracks “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” and “Nothing Was Delivered\,” Sweetheart marks the first time an established rock band played authentic country music\, and subsequently became the group’s most influential release. The album has proved to be a landmark\, serving not only as a blueprint for Hillman’s the Flying Burrito Brothers\, but also for the entire seminal 1970s Los Angeles country rock movement. The album was also influential on the outlaw country and new traditionalist movements\, as well as the so-called alternative country genre of the 1990s and 2000s. \n“As close to a country masterpiece as a rock act could ever make…Sweetheart wasn’t the first country-rock album\, but with its gorgeous three-way harmonies and sweet pedal steel\, it remains the best” – David Cantwell

SUMMARY:31st annual Christmas Luncheon for the Bristol Historical Association
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Virginia – The  will be held on Sunday\, December 2 at the Bristol Train Station.  Our speaker will be John Flood who will present an exciting program entitled\, Buffalo Bill Returns to Bristol.  The luncheon begins at 12:30pm and reservations are $30/each and are being accepted until November 24. \n\nWilliam Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody was one of the most colorful figures of the American Old West.  At only 11 years of age\, in order to support his family\, he was in the saddle and employed by gruff wagon bosses on the Western Frontier. In the middle of nowhere and quite alone\, he rode the dangerous trails of the Pony Express as a 14 year old. By his 20’s he had been in multiple Indian fights\, had scouted much of the American West\, and was so proficient at killing bison he had earned the name he would be known by for generations to come\, “Buffalo Bill”. From 1883 until 1916\, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody and his spectacular Wild West exhibition toured the nation\, the world\, and – yes indeed – even came right here to Bristol on four visits between 1897 and 1913. \n\nBuffalo Bill’s Wild West Show\, a described combination of circus\, vaudeville and rodeo\, featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley\, storyteller Calamity Jane\, and Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull accompanied by a band of 20 braves.  The pre-show event was the anticipated parade down the main street leading from the train station\, followed by two performances\, then overnight by train to the next stop.  His Wild West show has been featured around the world\, including a performance before Queen Victoria and many heads of state. \n\nOur speaker\, John Flood\, is a researcher\, author and community speaker who has published national articles in Wild West and American Cowboy Magazines. He is the Founder and Co-Director of Winchester Frontier Days.  A number of years ago Flood stumbled upon the fact that Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West had performed in John’s hometown of Winchester\, Va. way back in 1916. This was a shocking discovery and nearly no one in Winchester\, including most historians\, knew anything about this exciting event from the past. In 2016 as an outgrowth of this revelation\, John\, with the help of a good friend\, launched Winchester Frontier Days to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cody’s visit. For the past two years John has criss-crossed the state compiling all the information needed to tell this story. On December 2nd he will tell this tale with an emphasis on Bristol. His forthcoming book on the topic\, Buffalo Bill in the Limelight Across Virginia\, is due to be released in 2019. \n\nThe December 2nd luncheon meeting is open to the public but reservations and payment is required by Saturday\, November 24.  Reservations for the BHA Christmas Luncheon are $30/each and should be mailed to Carter Miles\, P.O. Box 204\, Bristol\, Tennessee 37621.  Contact Tim Buchanan\, program chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, buchanan03@bvu.net. Get more details on Facebook at BRISTOL HISTORY. \n\nEND \n10-28-2018

SUMMARY:State Historical Highway Marker “Bristol Union Railway Station” To Be Dedicated in Bristol
DESCRIPTION:State Historical Highway Marker\n“Bristol Union Railway Station”\nTo Be Dedicated in Bristol\n  \nRICHMOND – A state historical marker issued by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources will be dedicated next week that recalls the early railroad history of Bristol and its historic Norfolk & Western passenger station\, built between 1902 and 1903\, which today is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nA public ceremony to unveil the marker will begin at 1 p.m.\, Tuesday\, December 4 at the sign’s location alongside the Bristol Train Station\, 101 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard\, Bristol (Virginia). Parking is available across from the station in a municipal lot.  \nEvent speakers will include Bristol Virginia Mayor Kevin Mumpower and Bristol Tennessee Mayor Margaret Feierabend; Virginia State Delegate Israel O’Quinn; Tennessee State Representative John Crawford; Jim Maxwell\, chairman of the Bristol Trainstation Foundation (BTF); historian Tim Buchanan\, also a member of BTF; and Michael Pulice of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.  \nAccording to the marker\, “The Rev. James King donated land for railroad facilities” in 1848\, “before the town of Bristol took root early in the 1850s.” By October 1\, 1856\, the first passenger train arrived to Bristol “on the railroad later known as the Norfolk and Western\,” the marker reads. \nBristol’s railroad expansion continued in 1858 with another rail line\, later known as Southern Railway\, linking the town to Knoxville\, TN\, helping to secure Bristol’s status as a regional manufacturing and commercial hub. \nThe 1903 Bristol Union Railway Station\, the fourth station erected on the site\, served both the N&W and Southern Railway until 1971\, when passenger and postal service ended. The station was listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. \nThe Bristol marker was approved for manufacture and installation this past September by the Virginia Board of Historic Resources\, which has the authority to designate new historical markers. The Bristol Trainstation Foundation covered the manufacturing cost for the sign. \nVirginia’s historical highway marker program\, which began in 1927 with the installation of the first historical markers along U.S. Route 1\, is considered the oldest such program in the nation. Currently there are more than 2\,500 official state markers\, most maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation\, and by local partners in jurisdictions outside of VDOT’s authority such as the City of Bristol Virginia.

SUMMARY:Heritage Tourism Information Center Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:BLOUNTVILLE\, TN – Sullivan County will host a special ribbon-cutting and unveiling of a new sign to be installed for the future Heritage Tourism Information Center at Blountville. The event will be held at 4:30 PM on Thursday\, December 6\, 2018\, in downtown historic Blountville at the tourism center located at the corner of Hwy. 394 and the Blountville Bypass. \nFormerly the Old Sheriff’s Home\, the newly restored Heritage Tourism Information Center is set to officially open in Spring 2019. \nThe Old Sheriff’s Home is part of the Blountville Historic District and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This 1870s era structure has undergone several phases of preservation efforts using funds awarded from TDOT to the county. The first major improvement was the structural support of the roof trusses and new metal roof. The second phase included repointed the exterior brick work\, replacement windows and doors as well as interior structural improvements. The final phase of restoration will leave the building ready for occupancy\, including new hardwood flooring throughout\, painting\, trim\, 19th century black and white basket-weave tile and period lighting. The building is unique in that the exterior and interior walls are four-brick thick made from clay on-site. \nOriginally the building was the home of the county sheriff with a small jail cell on site. Over the years the county used the building for various offices. While the structure has been vacant for more than 20 years\, it will come to life serving as the new Heritage Tourism Information Center where visitors may begin a tour of the historic district or obtain information about other sites in Historic Sullivan. \nThe public is cordially welcome to join us in this special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 PM on Thursday\, December 6\, 2018\, with a tour of the building immediately following the dedication. Historic Blountville Christmas Tree Lighting with the Blountville Middle School Choir will follow at 6 PM in front of the historic Sullivan County Courthouse.

SUMMARY:Birthplace of Country Music Museum: Andrew Alli
DESCRIPTION:ANDREW ALLI AT THE MUSEUM\nDEC 7 – 6:30PM TO 8:00PM\nDate: Friday\, December 7\, 2018 \nTime: 6:30 p.m. (Doors open at 6:00 p.m.) \nLocation: Performance Theater\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum \nTickets: $10 Advance / $15 Day of Show \nBUY TICKETS \nThe Birthplace of Country Music proudly presents the acoustic blues\, folk\, and soul of Andrew Alli\, accompanied by Josh Small\, in the Performance Theater at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. \n \nAbout Andrew Alli\n“When Alli sings in a deep\, rich tenor and plays his fierce harp that cuts straight back to the golden era\, everybody looks up at amazement. It is clear that great things are coming for this talented singer and harmonica player” ~ Living Blues Magazine\nRichmond\, Virginia native Andrew Alli is among the Virginia artists chosen to represent the Birthplace of Country Music at The Long Road: A Festival of Country\, Americana & Roots in the U.K. this summer. Alli also amazed audiences at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in September. \nHe took up music relatively later in life at the age of 20. After being inspired by a busker playing harmonica on the street one day\, he hit the local music store and a harmonica of his own. From that point on\, Andrew committed himself to learning the history of the instrument. He very soon fell in love with the blues and began studying all of the harmonica greats including Big Walter Horton\, Little Walter\, Sonny Boy Williamson\, Junior wells\, and more. \nAlli has developed his own unique style of playing\, while still paying his respects to his biggest influences from the past. Throughout the years he has toured with dozens of musicians both domestically and abroad. Currently he leads the band “Andrew Alli and the Mainline” with Ivan Appelrouth on guitar\, Chaz Hibbler on drums\, and Ken Kellner on bass. Andrew plays in a duo with local musician Josh Small and Georgia based musician Jontavious Willis.
