SUMMARY:Virtual Film Screening and Q&A of Black in Appalachia’s “Beauford Delaney: Appalachian Artist”
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center to host Virtual Film Screening and Q&A of Black in Appalachia’s “Beauford Delaney: Appalachian Artist” \nThe McKinney Center is proud to partner with Black in Appalachia to present Beauford Delany: Appalachian Artist\, a free Virtual Film Screening Wednesday\, September 23\, at 7 p.m. Immediately following the screening will be a Q&A with director William Isom\, II. \n\nThis addition to Jonesborough’s Annual Juried Art Exhibition draws attention to Delaney\, a famous African American artist from East Tennessee\, whose body of work exemplifies the theme of this year’s exhibition of “Community\, Change\, & Connection.” \n\nBeauford Delaney was born in 1901 and contributed to the canon of unique artwork during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s and 1940s. Delaney became one of the world’s most influential abstract expressionists. This documentary of the artist explores his life in Tennessee\, Paris\, and Harlem\, and how these experiences informed his artistry. The film also details Delaney’s struggles with poverty\, paranoia\, sexual conflicts\, and even voices in his head\, while still being driven to create great art. \n\nThis film is directed by Black in Appalachia’s director William Isom\, II\, who will be online to answer questions following the film. William Isom is an East Tennessee native. Isom coordinates the project’s research\, community data base development\, documentary film and photography production\, oral history collection and educational events with residents. \n\nThe McKinney Center is honored to partner with Black in Appalachia as they work to highlight the history of African-Americans in the development of our region and its culture. Through research\, local narratives\, public engagement and exhibition\, this project aims to raise the visibility and contributions of the Black communities of the Mountain South. \n\nTo register to attend this virtual event\, visit https://mckinneycenter.com/ and click “Register” in the upper right-hand corner of the page. This project is a community service for Appalachian residents and families with roots in the region. Find out more at https://www.blackinappalachia.org/. \n\nThe Juried Art Show Exhibition will be open to the public by appointment from Saturday\, September 19 through October 10\, 2020.  You are encouraged to call the McKinney Center to schedule your private viewing of the show for groups of no more than ten people. Call 423.753.0562 to book your 30-minute appointment to see the show.

SUMMARY:McKinney Center: Conversations that Matter
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center Announces Conversations that Matter \n“Conversations that Matter” is a monthly on-line series from the McKinney Center. In each “Conversation” two local guests will explore their own culture and perspective\, and talk to each other about what makes them unique\, discover their similarities\, and explore their differences. They will look at where their lives might intersect personally and in the community. The goal of each “Conversation that Matters” is for guests and participants to hear real stories\, from real neighbors. \n\nThe third event in the series will feature retired minister\, activist\, and host of Black & White Dialogue\, Ed Wolff and Veteran\, NAACP member\, church deacon\, father & husband\, Walter Buford. It will take place via Zoom on Thursday\, September 24\, at 7 p.m. \n\nAs a viewer\, the focus will be on a conversation from two community members who wish to have a conversation on their own personal experiences in Northeast Tennessee. Those who attend will get to watch this conversation unfold with moderation from Katelyn Yarbrough and Michelle Treece. \n\nThis monthly series is inspired by the Diversity & Inclusion Subcommittee at the McKinney Center’s desire to highlight the experiences of all voices in Washington County\, Tennessee\, with an intention to include marginalized groups. By showcasing these conversations\, the Diversity & Inclusion committee hopes to open doors to new ideas and perspectives amongst our very own neighbors. Questions such as\, “What was your experience in grade-school and how did that make you feel?” or\, “have you experienced exclusion or racism?” For many of us the answers are different and unique. The McKinney Center believes it is time to talk about our experiences and share them. \n\nThere is value in uplifting these stories so that we may learn from one another. Then\, after hearing from one another our moderators and guest conversationalists will give insight on how to move forward. \n\nIf you would like to register for the event\, please visit mckinneycenter.com. For more information\, please call 423.753.0562.

SUMMARY:Booker T. Washington School: 80th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Booker T. Washington School Celebrates 80th Anniversary \nOctober of 2020 is the 80th Anniversary of the Booker T. Washington School in which the McKinney Center is housed. To celebrate and honor what this building once was\, the McKinney Center has created a video that will be available on the McKinney Center Facebook page and YouTube page beginning Thursday\, October 8th at 7 p.m. The McKinney Center asks that you take about 7 minutes of your time to watch this video to hear the voices of Booker T. Washington Alumni as a way to honor this momentous anniversary and to remember those who fostered a space of education and community for Black families in Jonesborough. \n\nBooker T. Washington opened its doors for African-American school age children from grades 1 through 8 in 1940 and served in this capacity until integration in 1965. This building was the primary education facility for hundreds of African-American students in the community. The faculty and principles that served here left an educational legacy that continues today. Beginning in 2010\, the town purchased the building and began restoring it into a place that would bring people together through the arts. Renovations lasted for several years. In November 2013\, the building officially opened as the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School\, named in honor of not only Ernest L. McKinney but his entire family\, who did so much to serve the people of Jonesborough. \n\nFive years ago\, Booker T. Washington Alumni met to celebrate the 75th Anniversary with a dinner\, music\, and certificate ceremony. To remain safe\, due to COVID-19\, the McKinney Center has decided to honor the 80th Anniversary by sharing images and stories from Alumni. The stories and voices you will hear in this video include Sandy Johnson\, Debbie Johnson\, and Nola Rollins Parks. These interviews come from the Spring of 2014\, shortly after the McKinney Center opened\, and invited alumni to “come back to school” and tell their stories\, which were collected by Jules Corriere and Pam Daniels. The McKinney Center is grateful that these alumni have shared their memories of Booker T. Washington School with our staff. We hope to preserve these full audio files so that generations to come will be able to hear about Black history in Jonesborough. \n\nHappy 80th Anniversary to Booker T. Washington School and thank you to all of the alumni\, staff\, educators\, and families that gathered and learned here. We are thankful for this place and will always do our best to honor that legacy. Find their YouTube page by searching McKinney Center.
