SUMMARY:Preacher Lawson - America’s Got Talent finalist!
DESCRIPTION:Since the age of 17\, Preacher Lawson has been bringing his brand of goofy\, high-energy comedy to the stage. Best known as a finalist in season 12 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent\, Preacher made a return for America’s Got Talent: The Champions\, where he finished 5th place overall. Spending most of his childhood in Memphis\, TN\, Preacher moved 20 times before the age of 10. Switching schools taught him how to adapt. Everywhere he would go\, he would learn about different people and different cultures\, but noticed the one universal language everyone had in common was laughter.  Using comedy is how he spoke and warmed up to most people. \nOrchestra: $25  I  Mezzanine: $25  I  Balcony: $20

This talk will go along with The Way We Worked\, our current special exhibit on display at the museum through January 23. René Rodgers\, Erika Barker\, and Scotty Almany will discuss how music is interwoven throughout the history of America’s workforce culture. \nWorkers’ anthems\, union movement songs\, stories of hard labor and tragedy\, and how music influences workflow and productivity will be thoughtfully examined and presented by our staff. We look forward to sharing this exploration of music and work with our virtual audience! \nThe Way We Worked explores how work became such a central element in American culture by tracing the many changes that affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years. The diversity of the American workforce is one of its strengths\, providing an opportunity to explore how people of all races and ethnicities identified commonalities and worked to knock down barriers in the professional world. The exhibition shows how we identify with work – as individuals and as communities. The Way We Worked\, an exhibition created by the National Archives\, is adapted for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and made possible with the generous support of the United States Congress. \nThe Birthplace of Country Music Museum (an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution) has created a supplementary display related to work in Bristol and the surrounding region from major manufacturing and resource extraction to retail\, food services\, farming\, local industry\, and the local newspaper. \nScotty Almany is the Digital Media\, Programming & Exhibit Logistics Manager at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. He received his Master’s in Museum Studies from John Hopkins University\, and he has worked at the museum since it opened in 2014. He is a musician\, a Radio Bristol DJ\, and a hockey fanatic. Erika Barker is the Curatorial Manager at the museum. She did a Master’s in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University\, and she has been at the museum since 2017. Erika is learning Korean\, loves to read\, and plays Dungeons & Dragons. Dr. René Rodgers is the Head Curator at the museum. She did her Master’s and Ph.D. work at Durham University in the UK\, and she joined the museum team before it opened as a member of the exhibit content development team. She loves to read\, hike with her dog Pippa\, and get creative with her bullet journal.\nThe event is free\, but pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Appalachian Express Chorus Concert
DESCRIPTION:Appalachian Express Chorus Announces 2021 Holiday Concert \n\nIt’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas\, and the Appalachian Express Chorus is ready to celebrate with a night of festive fun and familiar holiday tunes. \n\n“We hope that everyone can come join us for a fun night celebrating the holiday season\,” says Kingsport Parks and Recreation Assistant Manager Robin Dimona. \n\nAudience members will hear classic Christmas favorites performed with a barbershop twist as the men’s chorus weave their voices together in their signature four-part harmony style. Having originally formed in 1968\, the group has brought holiday cheer to Kingsport each year for the last five decades. \n\nThis year\, they will be joined by another group of experienced singers as Knoxville’s own Smokeyland Sound Chorus comes to town to perform a mix of new school hits and holiday classics. The night will also include performances from some of the area’s best barbershop quartets. \n\nThe holiday celebration begins at 7:00 p.m. on December 10th at the Kingsport Civic Auditorium. Admission is free and doors open at 6:30 p.m. \nFor more information\, please visit www.kingsportparksandrecreation.org or call 423-229-9409. \nAbout Kingsport Parks and Recreation \nKingsport Parks and Recreation is improving quality of life by offering essential services and recreation opportunities for the community of the City of Kingsport. They provide facilities\, programs and recreational experiences that are available to residents and visitors. Kingsport Parks and Recreation makes sure community members have places to play\, get fit and stay healthy\, as well as opportunities to foster new relationships and forge a connection with nature. \nAbout the City of Kingsport \nFounded in 1917\, the City of Kingsport (pop. 55\,400) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern U.S.  The city is widely known as a planned community\, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3\,500-acre park\, nature preserve\, planetarium and observatory.  Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council\, a Healthier Tennessee community\, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives.  While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S.\, there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride\, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” \n# # #

SUMMARY:Kingsport: Caroling at Christmas in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Caroling at Christmas in the Park\nMaking a Joyful Noise at Glen Bruce Park \nAcross from Kingsport City Hall\, Glen Bruce Park has been filled with decorations to make the season bright as Kingsport’s Christmas in the Park gears up for a night of holiday festivities for the whole family. \nOn December 17\, Downtown Kingsport will be filled with the sights and sounds of Christmas cheer as the park welcomes carolers from Lamplight Theatre to perform classic carols by the light of over 25 illuminated trees. These festive firs were donated by Home Depot and carefully decorated by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen\, city departments and community partners. \nIn addition to carolers\, Christmas in the Park will be proud to welcome a very important guest coming straight from the North Pole. Kids of all ages will have the opportunity to come meet Santa Claus as he wanders the park\, and may even spot another Christmas visitor from Whoville among the trees. While taking in the sights\, attendees can enjoy fresh hot chocolate available at no charge (while supplies last). \n“We are very excited to showcase our newest holiday event in Downtown Kingsport on December 17\,” said Alderman James Phillips. “Families are going to love coming down and walking through what feels like a scene out of a Hallmark movie. I truly believe you won’t find a better event to put you in the Christmas spirit.” \nThe fun starts on Friday\, December 17 from 6 – 8 p.m. There is no cost for entry. This outdoor event is subject to change in the case of inclement weather. If you can’t make it to this event\, don’t worry—Christmas in the Park is going on from now until January 3\, so come down and see all the decorated trees and lights. \nFor more information\, please visitwww.thisiskingsport.com or call (423)-224-2821.
