SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Straight Up: Tennessee Whiskey"
DESCRIPTION:“Straight Up: Tennessee Whiskey” — a film festival favorite and winner of Best Documentary Short at the 2014 Nashville Film Festival — will be screened at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum on Thursday\, July 21 at 7:00 p.m. This documentary covers Tennessee’s long history of producing some of the world’s finest liquor\, from the hills of moonshine-making to modern liquor artisans in the city. Writer and director Eric Byford will be present to talk and answer questions about the film. The screening of “Straight Up: Tennessee Whiskey” is free and open to the public.\nThis film screening is part of the programming to accompany our special exhibit “Made in Tennessee: Manufacturing Milestones.” The exhibit chronicles the rich variety of manufacturing traditions in Tennessee over the past 2 ½ centuries from the early agricultural and craft heritage to our current age of advanced technology and global competition. The diverse panels and artifacts highlight the history of manufacturing in Tennessee\, while also featuring a huge variety of the industries and companies that were once found – or still exist – throughout the state\, including several local manufacturers.\n“Made in Tennessee: Manufacturing Milestones” is a traveling exhibition organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society in Knoxville\, Tennessee. The exhibition project was made possible through an educational grant from the Alcoa Foundation to highlight Tennessee’s manufacturing story—past\, present\, and future. The grant was awarded in honor of Alcoa Tennessee Operations 100th Anniversary and the announcement of its automotive expansion project on May 2\, 2013. Additional support comes from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

SUMMARY:Big Kid Day at Oak Hill School
DESCRIPTION:Why should kids have all the fun? On Friday\, July 22\, the schoolhouse will be open for a Big Kid Day\, where students 18 and older are welcome to come and experience a school day in 1893. The day will start at 9 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. and will include lessons in arithmetic\, reading\, penmanship using quill pens\, history\, geography and much more. There will be recess\, of course.\nThe cost for the day is $5 per student and reservations are required as space is limited. The money will assist with the continued maintenance of the building and help support the Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program. Through this program\, students from across the region visit Oak Hill School for an experiential\, hands-on learning experience.\nRegistration is required by contacting the Heritage Alliance at info@heritageall.org or calling 423-753-9580.\nOak Hill School was built in 1886 to serve the community of Knob Creek. The building served local residents as a school and as a center for community events until the school was closed in the 1950s. The school sat unoccupied (except for a few bales of hay) until the expansion and development of Johnson City encroached. The property on which Oak Hill School was built was to become a retail shopping center. The property owners approached the Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum about saving the structure by relocating it to Jonesborough.\nToday\, Oak Hill School invites students to come for a day-long field trip and enroll in the class of 1892-93. Reading\, writing\, arithmetic\, history\, geography – even the pledge of allegiance – are all as they were prior to the turn of the last century. Our curriculum is based on the detailed 1892-93 diary of a Washington County School Superintendent. Students gain an understanding of the lives of their predecessors through this glimpse of a typical school day. Designed for a single classroom\, a day at Oak Hill School is an experience students will treasure.

SUMMARY:4th Annual Central Electronics Boat Anchor Event
DESCRIPTION:Vintage radio lovers from across the nation will flock to Jonesborough for Storybrook Farm’s 4th annual W9DYV Vintage Radio HAM Fest on July 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\nEvents and activities will include a swap meet\, demonstrations\, educational opportunities and a special meet and greet with one of the few remaining legends of the HAM Radio’s Golden Era\, Wes Schum (W9DYV). Wes was the founder of Central Electronics and introduced a complete system for hams to experiment with single sideband technology. In 1951\, his Model 10A exciter helped this new technology take root in amateur circles and spawned downstream products such as the 10B\, 20A and of course the incomparable Central Electronics 100V and 200V transmitters and the groundbreaking 600L Broadband Linear Amplifier.\nGet the soldering irons hot\, those old rigs purring and get ready for some real action. The swap meet will provide ample room for tailgating\, tents\, antennas and large equipment. All radio gear from the 1950s and 60s are welcome. If you can lift or haul it\, bring it!\nThere will also be discussions on how to properly restore and repair Central Electronics and other period radios from OMs such as George Maier (W1LSB)\, Nick (K5EF) and Bob Sullivan (WØYVA).\nStorybook Farm is located at 695 N. Cherokee St. in Jonesborough\, Tenn. Contact Nick Tusa\, K5EF at (504-400-8873) to reserve your space ($5 per car or $20 per Field Day tent/antenna space). Food and soft drinks will be available and BBQ pits are acceptable.
