SUMMARY:Master Storyteller\, Donald Davis\, Returns to Historic Jonesborough
DESCRIPTION:Master Storyteller\, Donald Davis\, Returns to Historic Jonesborough \nApril 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. \n  \nDonald Davis\, one of America’s favorite master storytellers\, is coming to the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center on April 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. The two-night concert will be unique with Davis telling different stories each evening. \n\nDavis was born in a Southern Appalachian Mountain world that was rich in stories. “I didn’t learn stories\, I just absorbed them.” Davis says as he recounts tales learned from a family of traditional storytellers who have lived on the same Western North Carolina land since 1781. \n\nThis year\, the Town of Jonesborough has new additions to everyone’s favorite storytelling performance. Before Davis hits the stage\, live music will be provided by Scott Wild\, an American singer/songwriter specializing in vintage folk rock. Directly after his concert Davis will host a meet and greet for fans. \n\nDavis’ resume boasts numerous experiences including Davidson College\, Duke University Divinity School\, a retired Methodist minister and former chairperson of the board of Directors for the National Storytelling Association. He is a favorite at the National Storytelling Festival and has also served as a featured teller at the Smithsonian Institute\, the World’s Fair as well as festivals and concerts throughout the United States and the world. \n\nFor Donald Davis\, storytelling is a way of giving and living life. He invites each listener to come along\, pull deep inside for one’s own stories and personally share the common experiences that celebrate the creative spirit. For Donald Davis\, storytelling “is not what I do for a living\, but it is how I do all that I do while I am living.” \n\nGeneral admission to the Donald Davis concert is $12. A special group rate for 15 or more people is also available for $10 per person. For tickets or more information\, call 423.753.1010 visit Donald Davis Concert Facebook page or Jonesborough.com/tickets.

Dubbed the “deepest dive imaginable into one of the most celebrated scenes in movie history” by the Los Angeles Times\, 78/52 gives audiences an unprecedented look at the iconic shower scene in Psycho. SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Dining Car Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:The Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society are pleased to offer a fundraiser with a one of a kind dining experience aboard a restored 1950 train dining car on April 14th. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to help fund the museum inside the restored Chuckey Depot\, now located in Jonesborough which houses a railroad museum.\nBuilt by the Southern Railway in 1906\, the Chuckey Depot\, until recently\, was privately owned. It was located on Norfolk Southern Railroad property\, who had plans to demolish it if it was not moved. Although it was no longer utilized as a train depot\, it was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979 for its historical architectural significance\, adding to the importance of saving it from demolition.\nThe Depot was given to the Town of Jonesborough who located it adjacent to the Jonesborough downtown district\, parallel to the railroad that runs through Town. Preserving and repurposing the Depot as a museum fits into the Town’s unique development strategy as Jonesborough recognizes its railroad history.\nPatrons can choose from two lunch seatings at the All Aboard! Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m.\, designed specifically for children and their parents\, with a kid-friendly lunch option and another option for adults. Patrons who choose the child ticket will receive Chicken Fingers\, Apple Slices\, Macaroni & Cheese and Juice. In addition\, children will also receive a souvenir engineer train hat\, whistle and red bandana to take home. Patrons who choose the adult ticket for lunch will receive a BBQ sandwich\, Macaroni & Cheese\, Cole Slaw and Tea or Water. SUMMARY:Jonesborough: 6th Annual Juried Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:onesborough’s Annual Juried Art Exhibition Returns for A Sixth Season \nFeaturing dozens of artists from around the region\, Jonesborough’s Open Juried Art Show is one of the area’s premier exhibitions. With works ranging from ceramics\, acrylics\, watercolors\, photography\, encaustic\, metal work\, mixed media\, and more\, art lovers will have the opportunity to see the best in the region as this annual event opens in April. \nThis exclusive event is set apart from other art exhibitions in Northeast Tennessee. Theresa Hammons\, director of the McKinney Center\, explains\, “First\, you get to see credible artists who have been through a submission process. The work that has been chosen to be in the show has been judged by someone with notable art experience.”  She continues by adding that the event is important for artists and patrons alike. “Artists in the show build their visibility\, and the general audience also gets the opportunity to view artwork from local artists and meet them. This in-turn builds community and relationships.”   \nHammons impresses upon the important role an exhibition like this plays in the community. “For artists\, entering a juried show also helps them keep their artwork and portfolio current which is critical in any occupation.  But\, for the general audience\, by attending art exhibitions we get the experience of seeing ideas and themes expressed in new and different ways\, which can be very powerful intellectually as well as emotionally. Art helps translate the world for us\, and allows us to understand and process ideas that are sometimes too big for words.” \nOne of the most exciting aspects of Jonesborough’s Open Juried Art show is the reputation of the jurors that have been brought to town\, and their fascinating lectures on the juried works that is given on opening night. In the past\, the jurors have provided insight into the works of art\, as well as talking points to engage with and think about. This year’s juror is Arnaldo Ugarte\, a Honduran born artist who for two decades\, has worked as a sculpture conservation technician under the direction of the curator at Kykuit\, the Rockefeller Estate in New York. Ugarte studied sculpture as well as industrial design at The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York from the years 1985 to 1990.  He acquired his experience over the years by working in various foundries and other institutions\, including the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Park at Pepsi-Co. In addition\, Ugarte has assisted many well-known artists in their personal studios and foundries\, such as Frank Stella\, Louise Bourgeois\, Kiki Smith and Erick Fischl\, as well as numerous others. Over his professional career\, Mr. Ugarte has served in an assortment of local juried art shows and has participated as a consultant in assistance to other art curators. Mr. Ugarte strives to continually engage his creativity and knowledge by visiting museum conservation laboratories and often travels to attend major art exhibitions around the country to expand his experiences in and of the art world. In his work at the Rockefeller estate\, his practice as a sculpture conservation technician includes maintaining the outdoor sculpture collection as well as other objects at the estate. As an artist\, Arnaldo Ugarte strongly believes that everything has the protentional of being regarded as a work of art and therefore everyone should seek to observe all aspects of visual language. He holds strong to the notion that oneself has the personal and social responsibility to constantly give their best in each and every aspect of one’s life. \nUgarte will be present on April 13 to provide a lecture at the International Storytelling Center at 6 p.m.\,and will assist with the presentation of awards at the opening reception at 7 p.m. at the McKinney Center. The lecture\, reception\, and the exhibit is free and open to the public. Most artists will be present at the opening night reception\, providing an opportunity for attendees to meet them. In addition\, most of the artwork will be for sale. \nThe exhibit runs through May 5\, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to5 p.m. and Saturdays\, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nFor more information contact the McKinney Center\, 423.753.0562.

SUMMARY:Farm & Funtime: Ralph Stanley II & The Clinch Mountain Boys
DESCRIPTION:Radio Bristol presents the Farm and Fun Time variety show\, live from the Birthplace of Country Music Museum with Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys and David Davis & the Warrior River Boys.\nDate: Thursday\, April 12\, 2018\nTime: 7:00 p.m.\n(Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Must be in your seat by 6:50 p.m.)\nLocation: Birthplace of Country Music Museum\nBUY TICKETS \nABOUT FARM AND FUN TIME\nFarm and Fun Time the historic Radio Program broadcasting from Downtown Bristol\, was a staple to listeners across the Southeast during the 1940s and 1950s on the former WCYB Radio. Radio Bristol breathes new life into the classic program with a fun\, energetic show broadcasting live from the Birthplace of Country Music Museum and features music by house band Bill & the Belles. Hosted by Radio Bristol producer and house band-leader Kris Truelsen\, Farm & Fun Time is an event the whole family can enjoy live\, in the studio or when gathered around their radios. \nABOUT THE TALENT\n\nRalph Stanley II & The Clinch Mountain Boys\nIf you were to gather together an average cross-section of people and ask them if they thought it would be an advantage for a performer to be the child of a legend\, most would probably conclude that it would have to be a definite plus. After all\, the doors of opportunity would be quicker to open\, and the spotlight of public attention that so many artists spend years trying to cultivate would be yours because…well…just because. Famous by default\, so to speak and doubtless those are real\, tangible advantages. But then there’s the downside- pressure. The learning curve\, the whole growth process with all its potential missteps and pitfalls\, is a public document. Most artists get to take those perilous first steps of their careers in relative anonymity\, a nameless face in the crowd.\nAs one might expect for the son of a renowned banjo player\, the first instrument Ralph II ever held was a banjo. At the ripe old age of three\, Ralph (or simply “Two” as he is called by his family and friends)\, had his first lesson from the elder Stanley\, learning a simple finger roll. It turned out\, however\, that he would not be following in his father’s footsteps\, when it came to choice of instrument. He soon fell under the spell of the undisputed king of boyhood musical desires\, the guitar. He spotted one under his sister’s bed\, and according to Ralph\, “I wanted to play it. When I was five years old\, I started with the guitar and I’ve been playing it ever since”.\nBut despite his interest in the guitar\, and the fact that he was occasionally traveling with the Clinch Mountain Boys on the road\, he had not yet developed an ambition to play professionally. It took until age twelve and an old 1977 video of the late Keith Whitley during his tenure as lead singer for the Clinch Mountain Boys\, to inspire him to become a professional musician. After seeing Whitley with the elder Stanley\, he was hooked and spent hours in the family basement honing his skills\, and weathering the comparisons to his late Uncle Carter. His persistence paid off\, and he took the stage as lead singer with Ralph Sr. and the Clinch Mountain Boys in June of 1995. Since then\, he has earned the respect of Stanley fans everywhere\, and has garnered praise as a strong new artist in his own right.\nOn May 26\, 2017\, Stanley Family Records released the self-titled album by Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys. This is the first recording released since Ralph II honored his father’s wishes by taking over the Clinch Mountain boys name. These big shoes are being filled by the talents of previous Clinch Mountain Boy John Rigsby on fiddle and mandolin\, Alex Leach on banjo\, Noah Brown on the upright bass\, and Ralph II on guitar.\nRalph II has had 2 Grammy nominations on previous albums he recorded with Rebel Records. In 2002 he earned his first Grammy along with his father. Dr. Ralph Stanley for their collaboration with Jim Lauderdale on “Lost in the Lonesome Pines.” Ralph II has proven to be an accomplished songwriter and has 6 solo albums under his belt\, along with the highly acclaimed duet album with his father titled “Side by Side.” When not traveling\, Ralph II enjoys his time at home with his wife Kristi and their children Taylor and Ralph III.\n\nDavid Davis & the Warrior River Boys\nAlabama native and member of The Alabama Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame\, David Davis has traveled and preformed as frontman for the bluegrass group\, David Davis and the Warrior River Boys since 1984. He is recognized as one of the foremost practitioners of the Monroe mandolin techinique. His interest in old-time and bluegrass music grew organically from a musical family\, both his father and grandfather were players and singers. His uncle\, Cleo Davis\, was Bill Monroe’s original Blue Grass Boy. His Warrior River Boys band consists of Robert Montgomery (banjo)\, Marty Hays (bass)\, Stan Wilemon (guitar)\, and Phillip James (fiddle).\n\nBill and the Belles\nWhat began as a project to explore the space created between hillbilly and urban\, between vaudeville\nand down home\, has arrived somewhere entirely new. Bill and the Belles offers a contemporary\nreimagining of a bygone era\, a vocal-centric performance that breathes new life into the sounds of\nearly country music. At the foothills of the Blue Ridge and the forefront of old-time music\, Bill and the\nBelles continue to further the music traditions of their region. From sentimental Southern ballads to the\npopular songs of Tin Pan Alley to regional fiddle breakdowns\, a Bill and the Belles show is a celebration\nof the diversity country music once represented.\nBill and the Belles play alongside America’s top country and roots music artists as the house band for\nthe historic radio program Farm and Fun Time presented by Radio Bristol and the Birthplace of Country\nMusic. Lifelong musicians Kris Truelsen\, Grace Van’t Hof\, Kalia Yeagle\, and Karl Zerfas bring to the stage\nan uplifting show unlike any other\, full of humor\, high spirits\, and all-around revelry. It’s clear this group\nshares a rare musical connection and deep love for the music\, and their excitement is contagious.

SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Association: Author and Historian Michael Shaffer
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Virginia – Author and historian Michael Shaffer will present a program for the Bristol Historical Association on Monday\, April 9 at the Bristol Train Station on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Shaffer’s presentation is entitled “Bristol’s Gray Ghost: Colonel John S. Mosby”.   The meeting will begin at 6:30pm and is open to the public. \n\nShaffer is a Civil War historian\, author\, instructor\, and frequent lecturer.  A member of the Society of Civil War Historians\, Historians of the Civil War Western Theater\, and Georgia Association of Historians\, he serves as a Civil War consultant for the River Line Historic Area.  He is a native of Bristol and holds BA and MA degrees\, with honors\, in Military History – Civil War Studies from American Military University.  Shaffer is currently teaching a series on this topic at Kennesaw State University. \n\nIt is Shaffer’s contention that during the American Civil War\, “perhaps no other soldier approached the actions of Colonel John Singleton Mosby. The daring partisan ranger led his small body of troops on several raids\, capturing Federal troops\, destroying supplies\, and drawing the attending of Northern soldiers needed elsewhere.” \n\nMosby is of immense interest of Civil War historians. Before the onset of the war\, Mosby was a resident of Goodson\, now Bristol Virginia\, and operated a law office on Main Street. He drew acclaim in the South during the war\, and drew ire following the war with his support of President U.S. Grant. He also served as the American consul to Hong Kong and in the U.S. Department of Justice. \n\nThe April 9th meeting is in partnership with the Bristol Train Station Foundation and the Bristol YWCA.  The program is free to the general public. Contact Tim Buchanan\, Program Chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, by e-mail; buchanan03@bvu.net. Visit our Facebook page for details\, BRISTOL HISTORY. Sid Oakley is the president of the Bristol Historical Association.

SUMMARY:World War One Readers Theatre
DESCRIPTION:A woman searching for her missing son who returned from war but never came home. A man who was reported to the authorities by his neighbors because he refused to purchase war bonds. A soldier who was sick and tired of being stuck in the mud\, and another who wouldn’t change places with the president of the hometown bank. A community hard hit by the deadly Spanish Influenza Pandemic. Come hear these stories and more at a performance hosted by the Heritage Alliance on Sunday\, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. inside the Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum. \n\nThis Readers’ Theatre piece will share firsthand accounts of the lives of Washington County citizens during World War One. “While doing the research for this piece\, I was struck by the similarities between now and then\, even though a century has passed\,” shares Special Projects Coordinator Anne Mason. “It was a time of suspicion in America\, where neighbors spied on one another and turned each other in for un-American activities. World War One was a devastating war overseas\, and its chaos was definitely felt across the Atlantic.” Join the Heritage Alliance on April 8\, and hear the struggles from overseas and on the home front as century old newspaper headlines come to life. The Jonesborough/Washington County History Museum is located inside the Jonesborough Visitor’s Center on Boone Street. \n\nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences.  For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org.  Additional information can also be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/.
