SUMMARY:Jonesborough Storytown Live Radio Show
DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough’s original storytelling radio show enters its 9th year on January 27\, and the 2020 Season will bring a new vision to the program. This live stage production\, which is recorded and aired on local NPR station WETS 89.5 FM out of Johnson City will be seeing larger audiences\, as it begins its own podcast channel\, which will launch in January of 2020. \n\nAs the program will now reach national audiences\, a few adjustments are being made\, including the name. Most local residents know the radio show as the “Yarn Exchange.” While residents in East Tennessee understand that a “yarn” is a tale\, there was concern that this reference may not translate in other areas of the United States. After discussion with participants\, a new name for the program was chosen. As the Yarn Exchange Radio Show has been part of Jonesborough’s broader StoryTown Initiative\, the radio show will now fall under the name of “StoryTown Radio Show”\, as will the podcast. \n\nWith a listenership already at 55\,000\, the program is looking forward to reaching even more audiences\, in order to share Jonesborough’s wonderful stories\, history\, heritage\, and culture. \n  \nSeason passes are now available for this exciting new year. And changes have come to the passes as well. For only $70\, participants will get a year’s worth of shows\, eleven total\, which also includes the popular “Soups and Songs” fundraiser and sing-a-long which sold out before Thanksgiving this year. Season pass holders will also be given a special code\, and can check in and choose seats from their own computer\, instead of calling in. A limited number of season passes will be available each season\, to ensure that new audiences will also be able to enjoy the program. \n  \nThe story and music line-up for 2020 includes exciting new talent and great stories. \n  \nJanuary 27 starts the new year with “Our Favorite Things” and special music guests from Buffalo\, South Carolina\, the electrifying duo of Freddie Vanderford and Brandon Turner. Vanderford\, who is endorsed by Hohner Harmonicas\, has been inducted into the South Carolina Folk Life Hall of Fame for his special talent in playing Piedmont Blues. \nFebruary 24 looks at stories of “Fair Play” and hosts music guests “We Five.” \nMarch 23 celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage with its program “19th and 100” with music guest Mama Molassas\, who will join the program for the very first time. \nApril 27 welcomes the changes of spring with a program entitled “Ch Ch Changes” with special music guests “The Green Rumours.” \nMay 25 will see the annual patriotic episode\, with stories of veterans\, military family\, and those lost in a special program “Bridging the Gulf- WWII to Iraq” and will have special music guests Tom Sizemore and Nate Harris. \nJune 22 will be filled with “Wedding Bells” and welcomes musical guests Joe Gumina and Brittany Whitson\, who are back by audience popular demand. \nJuly 27\, a time of summer vacations\, devotes its episode “What A Trip” to those hilarious\, sometimes moving\, and always memorable trips\, and welcomes back musician Aaron Jackson. \nAugust 24 will be filled with summer fun in their “Summertime” episode\, with music guests Thistle Dew. \nSeptember 28 will honor area police\, EMT\, and firemen in their “First Responders” program\, with music guests Sweetwater Troubadours. \nOctober 26 will be “Curiosities” and feature tales of the weird and strange in Jonesborough\, and will welcome back audience favorites The David Crockett Madrigal Singers. \nNovember 30 will be the annual Soupbowl Fundraiser at the McKinney Center\, with the Jonesborough Novelty Band. New this year- the season pass includes this special program. This event is an annual favorite\, which includes a handmade ceramic bowl of your choice\, appetizers\, salad and bread\, an all you can eat gourmet soup meal with six different locally made soups that include vegan\, gluten free\, and vegetarian offerings\, and dessert. Following dinner is a show and Christmas Sing-A-Long with the cast and the Jonesborough Novelty Band. Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the McKinney Center and the StoryTown Radio Show. \n\nThe 2020 StoryTown Radio Show is also excited about its new sponsors. Their 9th season is made possible by generous support from the Tennessee Arts Commission\, the Wild Women of Jonesborough\, Nancy Hope and Odie Major\, Main Street Café and Catering\, Appalachian Light and Productions\, and Royal Carriage Limo. \n\nTo purchase tickets or season passes\, go online to Jonesborough.com/tickets or call the Historic Visitors Center at 243-753-1010. SUMMARY:January Jams: Lilly Hiatt
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 25th\n\n\nLilly Hiatt\n\n\nLilly Hiatt returned with Trinity Lane on August 25th\, 2017. The 12-song set was produced by Michael Trent of Shovels & Rope and engineered by Andy Dixon at Trent’s Studio Bees in Johns Island\, SC. It is the follow up to her acclaimed sophomore album Royal Blue\, which Paste Magazine described as “a glorious tumble of influences – surf rock\, Smiths vibes\, Laurel Canyon twang and jangle\, Sonic Youth flatline\, Britpop flourishes\, Seattle grunge and Joy Division meets Human League synthery.” In addition to her backing band\, Trent is featured as a musician throughout\, and is joined by his wife and Shovels & Rope partner Cary Ann Hearst for backing vocals on “Everything I Had.” Lilly’s love of the ‘90s alt-rock she was raised on continues to shine through on Trinity Lane in the distressed guitars and urgent backbeats. She cites the Pixies\, Breeders\, Dinosaur Jr.\, and her favorite\, Pearl Jam as influences\, but there is also something distinctly Americana lurking in the songs. Rolling Stone Country premiered the Michael Carter-directed video for the album’s title track HERE\, stating\, “The daughter of John Hiatt\, she keeps the family tradition alive\, mixing Southern influences – Americana\, folk and left-of-center country – with a raw approach that’s better suited to the garage than the saloon. The album’s title track is no exception…the song finds Hiatt making peace with her old demons\, while guitars crash and pianos chime in the background.” They continued\, “‘Trinity Lane’ is an empowerment anthem stocked with details from Hiatt’s everyday life\, from the name of her street to the smell of her neighbor’s cooking.” \nAfter moving out of an ex’s house\, Hiatt settled into a new apartment off of Trinity Lane in her East Nashville neighborhood and went on tour with friend John Moreland to the West Coast and back. The intensely personal\, autobiographical album was written largely upon her return\, in isolation\, facing the issues she escaped while on the road. Every time she wanted a man\, she picked up her guitar. Every time she wanted a drink\, she picked up her guitar. Hiatt says\, “Love will take you to the darkest places but also the most honest places if you let it. Learning how to love myself is something I’ve always been lousy with\, and I spent some time on that. I thought about my sobriety\, what that means to me\, the struggles I’d had throughout the years\, since I was a 27-year-old and hung up my toxic drinking habit. I thought about my mother\, who took her own life when I was a baby\, not far from my age at 30 years old\, and I related to her more than ever. As you can see\, there was plenty of time spent on my own. I didn’t talk to that many folks\, albeit a few close friends\, and leaned into my family. I stayed away from men\, and danced alone in the evenings\, looking out my window observing my humble and lively neighborhood. I found power in being by myself. I found peace in the people I was surrounded with – we didn’t really know one another\, but we smiled when passed on the street. One time I almost rear-ended an older woman in her car backing out of my driveway and I said\, ‘Oh man\, I’m just not used to any cars coming around this bend. She replied\, ‘This is our little hideout\, baby\,’ And it really was.” She continues\, “After a while\, I had all these songs to play\, and wanted to share them. I wanted to get out of town to get some distance from everything\, so after an ongoing conversation with Michael Trent\, I took my band to Johns Island\, SC and we holed up for a few weeks. I poured my heart out\, and trusted them with it\, and these guys gave it right back. I think we all understood what it’s like to question home\, intention\, demons\, love…I think most people understand that.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 25th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Jason Isbell\, John Moreland\, Brandi Carlisle\, Drive By Truckers \n \nTickets: Start at $20 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpening Act: TBD \n

SUMMARY:January Jams: Charley Crockett
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 24th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, January 24th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Tyler Childers\, Sturgill Simpson\, Colter Wall\, Paul Cauthen \n \nTickets start at $18 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpening Act: TBD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharley Crockett\n\n\n“If you ask me where I’m going\, I can’t tell ya cause I don’t know. But in my mind I see the Valley\, you should see the way it glows.” \n– “The Valley” \nCharley Crockett’s been running nearly his entire life\, but with the title track to his sixth album\, the Texas songwriter looks back at where he came from. “The Valley” chronicles his hard upbringing on the south Texas border in San Benito and his single mom’s move to Dallas\, but it also distills the essence of Crockett’s fierce and restless independence. \nRecorded just a week before the songwriter went under the knife for life-saving open-heart surgery in January\, the album stirs with an introspection and urgency to tell his story. It’s a story of an artist searching for his place in the world\, absorbing the sounds of the country as he attempts to make sense of the struggles of America and life on the road. It’s a story of exile and promise\, as Crockett now runs those same highways playing for thousands of fans. \nWith a pawn shop guitar that his mom bought for him when he was 17\, Crockett taught himself to play. Summers in New Orleans with his uncle sparked his ear\, while the Dallas blues and Valley’s Tex-Mex slipped into his bloodstream. \nHe lit out after high school and spent a decade living rough on the road. He worked the communes and farms in Northern California. He busked the streets of New Orleans and Memphis. He ran the subways of New York City\, sleeping in abandoned warehouses and constantly in trouble with the law. \nThose years were a blur of highways and train cars and cities for Crockett\, but they taught him how to keep moving to survive and showed him a desperate side of the country living just below the surface. And all of it fused into his music. \nWhen he returned to Dallas in 2014 with a self-recorded album in his hand\, he found a thriving music scene emerging in Deep Ellum behind artists like Leon Bridges and the Texas Gentlemen. He hustled his LP to anyone that would listen\, and people took notice. \nOne artist whose head was turned was blues drummer Jay Moeller\, who convinced Crockett to move to Austin and introduced him to iconoclastic roots producer Billy Horton. With Horton\, Crockett found a partner who understood his unique and versatile style. \n“I think I found my sound with working with Billy Horton\,” Crockett attests of his co-producer. “I really want to show people how soul music\, classic country\, and blues are all right there together. I’m thinking about the respect of the tradition\, and I want to be proud of it. I made this record for that express purpose of choosing to stay in my roots and keep them up front and not let them get tossed out.” \nAcross six albums in the past five years\, the Texan has defined his own distinct roots style. Even on his platters of deep-cut blues and country covers like Lil’ G.L.’s Honky Tonk Jubilee (2017) and Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza (2018)\, Crockett pushes a suave and soulful classic Americana that melds genres and is as restless as the artist himself. \nHis delivery hinges with New Orleans clip\, and voice slides with slight lisp that melts around his phrasing like oil skirting the surface of a pond. His ear tunes an amalgam of East Texas blues\, border Tex-Mex\, classic honky tonk\, and Louisiana soul\, swerving effortlessly between weeping George Jones-worthy country ballads and hot smoked Lazy Lester-swaddled blues. And Crockett’s own songwriting\, showcased on 2016’s In the Night and 2018 breakout Lonesome as a Shadow\, cuts with an equally timeless quality. \nNo surprise then that Crockett has found a home base in Austin\, with a deep history and appreciation for stylistic dexterity and transformational takes on traditional sounds. Like Doug Sahm’s cosmic roots blender or Gary Clark Jr’s blues shredder\, or even Willie Nelson’s signature jazz country phrasing\, Crockett effortlessly spins his influences into his own unique mix\, let loose live with shimmying stage charisma worthy of Elvis or Jerry Lee Lewis. \nAnother artist who took notice of the sharp new songwriter was Turnpike Troubadours frontman Evan Felker\, who instantly became a champion of his music after meeting outside a show at the historic Gruene Hall. Crockett became a frequent tourmate with the band\, and penned The Valley’s opening track\, “Borrowed Time\,” with Felker while traveling from L.A. to Colorado. \n“Writing with Evan was the easiest thing\,” offers Crockett. “I’ve learned everything from Evan\, and I feel very blessed to know him the way I do\, because he’s just special. I became a headliner through opening for them. They showed me how to do it and still stay the kind of independent cat I am.” \nThat independence remains essential to Crockett. Although courted by major labels and big name producers\, Crockett is determined to continue forging his own path. Along the way\, he’s begun to garner critical praise from national outlets like Rolling Stone\, Billboard\, and NPR\, and made his mark at major festivals ranging from Stagecoach and Pickathon to ACL and Newport Folk. This winter\, Blue Bonanza hit #10 on Billboard Blues Chart and the Americana radio album chart. \nAt 35\, Crockett still spends most of his time on the road\, and he’s hardly slowing down. Even with his surgery\, Crockett was back onstage within a couple months hot-stepping across SXSW. This summer\, he makes his debut at the Grand Ole Opry as he sets out for headlining US and European tours. Crockett keeps constantly moving forward\, even as The Valley takes a moment to reflect on his past. \n“Being from the Valley\, and traveling around the country and the world\, and then playing Deep Ellum hard and being in Austin the past few years – it can be hard to know where you’re really from\,” he says. “My story’s wilder than people can make stories up. These songs that I’ve written on this record\, it’s all really autobiographical\, and they’re about as much depth as I’ve been able to capture writing about myself.” \nOr as Crockett sings atop a rumbling shuffle on “The Way I’m Livin’ (Santa Rosa)”: \n“If the way I’m living seem like just a mess\, believe me I would choose this life over the rest.”

These stories\, however\, largely ignore black Appalachian lives. Karida L. Brown’s Gone Home offers a much-needed corrective to the current whitewashing of Appalachia. In telling the stories of African Americans living and working in Appalachian coal towns\, Brown offers a sweeping look at race\, identity\, changes in politics and policy\, and black migration in the region and beyond. \nDrawn from over 150 original oral history interviews with former and current residents of Harlan County\, Kentucky\, Brown shows that as the nation experienced enormous transformation from the pre- to the post-civil rights era\, so too did black Americans. In reconstructing the life histories of black coal miners\, Brown shows the mutable and shifting nature of collective identity\, the struggles of labor and representation\, and that Appalachia is far more diverse than you think. \nAbout the author:\nKarida L. Brown is assistant professor of sociology and African American studies at the University of California\, Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:January Jams: Penny & Sparrow
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 18th\n\n\nPenny & Sparrow\n\n\n\n\n\n“Almost everything changed for us in these last two years\,” says Andy Baxter\, one half of the acclaimed duo Penny & Sparrow. “It was a painful experience in a lot of ways\, but it was also a joyful one.” \n\nJoy and pain walk hand in hand on ‘Finch\,’ Penny & Sparrow’s magnificent sixth album. Written during their first major break from the road in years\, the record finds the band reckoning with a prolonged period of intense personal transformation\, a profound awakening that altered their perceptions of masculinity\, sex\, religion\, divorce\, friendship\, vanity\, purpose\, and\, perhaps most importantly\, self. Deeply vulnerable and boldly cinematic\, the resulting songs blur the lines between indie-folk and alt-pop\, with dense string arrangements and atmospheric production underpinning soaring melodies and airtight harmonies from Baxter and his longtime musical partner\, Kyle Jahnke. \n\nTexas natives\, Baxter and Jahnke first crossed paths at UT Austin\, where they developed both a fast friendship and a deeply symbiotic musical connection. Jahnke was a gifted guitarist with an ear for melody\, Baxter an erudite lyricist with a mesmerizing voice and crystalline falsetto\, and the duo quickly found that their vocals blended together as if they’d been singing in harmony their whole lives. Beginning with 2013’s ‘Tenboom\,’ the staunchly DIY pair released a series of critically lauded records that garnered comparisons to the hushed intimacy of Iron & Wine and the adventurous beauty of James Blake\, building up a devoted fanbase along the way through relentless touring and word-of-mouth buzz. NPR praised the band’s songwriting as a “delicate dance between heartache and resolve\,” while The World Café raved that they’ve “steadily built a sound as attentive to detail as Simon & Garfunkel and as open to the present day as Bon Iver\,” and Rolling Stone hailed their catalog as “folk music for Sunday mornings\, quiet evenings\, and all the fragile moments in between.” In addition to the mountain of glowing reviews\, the band also earned high profile fans—including The Civil Wars’ John Paul White\, who produced 2015’s ‘Let A Lover Drown You’—and extensive tour dates with everyone from Josh Ritter and Johnnyswim to Drew Holcomb and Delta Rae. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 18th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Bon Iver\, JOHNNYSWIM\, Drew Holcomb\, Josh Ritter\, Noah Gundersen \n \nTickets: Start at $18 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \n \nOpening Act: TBD \n

SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Roaring Twenties Contra Dance
DESCRIPTION:Historic Jonesborough Dance Society to Host Roaring Twenties Contra Dance \nThe Historic Jonesborough Dance Society welcomes the  “Riverdale” contra dance band from Knoxville. They will perform at the Jonesborough Visitors Center\, 117 Boone Street on January 18\, 2020 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The dance will be led by caller\, Nick Boulet\, from Greensboro\, NC. Admission to the dance is $7\, $5 for members and full time students. A workshop for new dancers will begin at 7:30 p.m. No partner is necessary. All dances are taught by the caller. \n\nThe roaring twenties were a decadent historical heyday. Flappers\, gangsters\, and bootleggers reveled in secret behind the closed doors of the speakeasies that littered the American landscape during prohibition. The atmosphere was sensual and electric. Underground clubs pulsed with ragtime and the music of Cab Calloway\, Al Jolson\, and Louis Armstrong. Women adorned in feathered headwear\, pearls\, and Mary Janes kicked up the fringes of their glimmering dresses as they danced. Men in pinstripes and pencil-thin mustaches sipped cocktails and smoked fine cigars in spite of nationwide alcohol bans.  “While we will only be serving “mocktails” (alcohol free) and will not be smoking fine cigars\, the room will be decorated in period style by our artistic director\, Dana Kay Kehs.  Dana will use her creative magic to set the tone for the dance party”\, adds David Wiley\, President of the Historic Jonesborough Dance Society.  There will be snacks\, door prizes\, a photo booth and a swing dance lesson at the 9:00 p.m. break.  Period dress is encouraged but not required. \n\nRiverdale is a high-energy father-son duo featuring Nick Shoemaker on the nyckelharpa and Ed Shoemaker on the baritone guitar. With a repertoire of tunes from Ireland\, Scotland\, Cape Breton\, Quebec\, New England\, Sweden\, and the Southern Appalachians\, Riverdale offers a little something for everyone! \n\nRiverdale comes to us from Knoxville\, TN.  The name Riverdale comes from a small community along the French Broad River where the Shoemaker family has lived for quite some time. Riverdale started playing for Contra Dances about 2 years ago. Nick plays a version of the nyckelharpa known as a fiddleharpa. A fiddleharpa is a variation on the Swedish Nyckelharpa; a stringed instrument dating back to the fourteenth century. It consists of sixteen total strings: four are bowed\, and twelve are resonant. A keybox is used in place of the fretboard\, with keys in half-step intervals. \n\nUnlike the traditional nyckelharpa\, a fiddleharpa has four rows of keys and is tuned like a violin (G-D-A-E). This expands the range and allows fiddle players to maintain familiar finger patterns. Fiddleharpas are rare\, even in Sweden\, and they are nearly non-existent in the United States\, with numbers barely reaching double-digits. Nevertheless\, it is a beautiful-sounding instrument with plenty of untapped potential. \n\nThe term fiddleharpa is actually a bit redundant. Nyckelharpa translates roughly to “key fiddle” in English. That makes fiddleharpa a “fiddle fiddle” in its most literal translation. Nevertheless\, the term has stuck and 4-row harpas with fiddle tuning have become known as fiddleharpas. For discussion purposes\, it is correct to refer to all of these instruments as nyckelharpas. \n\nNick Boulet began dancing in Knoxville in the 1980s and calling in the 1990s. He has called in Knoxville\, Chattanooga\, Nashville\, Dayton\, TN\, Damascus VA\, Greensboro\, NC\, Winston-Salem NC\, Berea KY\, Huntsville AL\, as well as Jonesborough\, TN. He is known for dances that he has written like “Warmin’ Up The Car.” He loves to dance and calls dances that keep the energy up. He invites all to come on out and dance! \n\nContra dancing is a traditional form of American folk dance that evolved from the long ways country dances popular in English society centuries ago.  Contra dance communities now thrive all over the country.  There are websites that can direct you to contra dances in most states.  The modern contra dances provide dancers of all ages and experience levels with the opportunity to smile\, move\, connect\, flirt and create an evening of dance nirvana with each other.  No previous dance experience is necessary.  No fancy footwork is required.  If you can walk and count to eight\, you can contra dance! \nContra dances are community events.  At almost any contra you will find people of all ages and all dance skill levels\, from young to old\, beginner to expert.  Contra dancers form a very open and welcoming group of people.  You can come alone or with others since it is a tradition to dance with a variety of partners throughout the night.  It is perfectly acceptable for either a man or a woman to ask someone to dance.  It’s a great way to make friends with someone they haven’t met before. You will find contra dancing a great way to make new friends. \n\nFor more information\, please visit www.historicjonesboroughdancesociety.org or call dance coordinator\, David Wiley at 423.534.8879.   Come and join the fun.  You don’t have to be a skilled dancers.  Remember the phrase “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.  Get in the game of life”   Learn to dance and be a part of our community.

SUMMARY:January Jams: The Collection
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, January 17th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, January 17th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Mipso\, Death Cab for Cutie\, Sufjan Stevens\, Annabelle’s Curse \n \nTickets: Start at $15 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nOpening Act: \nTBD \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Collection\n\n\n“If You Love An Uplifting Band\, The Collection Is For You” -Bob Boilen\, NPR Music     *Top 10 NPR Tiny Desk Entries 2019* \n \nOn the surface\, the name of NC band The Collection’s new album\, ‘Entropy\,’ may seem deceptive. Over the four years since the release of their chamber pop\, 25-piece ensemble debut\, ‘Ars Moriendi\,’ the band shed enough weight to become an efficient touring band\, garnered praise from NPR and American Songwriter\, toured nationally with bands like The Oh Hellos and Lowland Hum\, and performed dynamic sets at CMJ and New Music Seminar as an official “Top 100 Artists On The Verge.” \nThe trimming-of-the-excess was soon mirrored in vocalist David Wimbish’s spirituality\, resulting in the band’s 2017 follow-up\, ‘Listen To The River\,’ The Collection’s first member-arranged group of songs. Inspired by Herman Hesse’s ‘Siddhartha\,’ and the poetry of Rumi\, the album took a step off of the fence walked between faith and doubt on Ars Moriendi\, landing distinctly on the side of doubt. The constitutive single\, Sing Of The Moon\, received over 3 million streams between Youtube and Spotify\, the release tour brought hundreds of people to venues across the country\, and The Collection was featured at Wild Goose Festival\, and Switchpoint Conference alongside PRI’s Marco Werman. \nEven Entropy’s debut single Beautiful Life\, which PopMatters called\, “symphonic\, poetic wonderment\,” seems to be about finding order by watching the natural world. Beneath the surface of all of this\, however\, is another story. \nDuring the recording of Listen To The River\, then-married band-members David and Mira Joy ended their marriage. Though committed to finishing the project peacefully together\, the next months were a chaotic chain of events that left them with a totalled car\, no house\, no work\, few friends\, and the dwindling commitment of some bandmates. \nStarting over alone in a new city\, Wimbish began to write for a new solo project\, freed from the assumed expectations of fans and band-members. The result was the most focused\, honest\, and intimate batch of songs the 27 year old songwriter had written\, lyrically and musically. As the writing progressed\, and the band had to stare it’s impending death in the eyes\, a solid and enduring core emerged. Members Hayden Cooke (Bass)\, Joshua Ling (Harmonium/Guitar/Vocals)\, and Graham Dickey (Horns/Bells) lent their performances to David Wimbish’s (Vocals/Guitar/Keys/Strings) fleshed out songs\, birthing The Collection’s 3rd full-length record from the ashes of the unfinished solo project. With the addition of husband-and-wife Joshua Linhart (Drums) and Sarah McCoy (Keys/Synth/Vocals)\, the band finally found its firm footing. \nAnd that is where the story of Entropy is revealed: Though meant to document David’s life’s gradual decline into\, and subsequent recovery from\, disorder\, the album became a living testimony to The Collection’s own experience of entropy. Now\, with the wisdom of hindsight\, the band is back and focused\, with a passion for sharing what they’ve learned: that on the other side of disorder lies a new sense of beauty.”

SUMMARY:Film: Rising Voices
DESCRIPTION:FILM SCREENING: RISING VOICES\nJAN 16 – 6:30PM TO 8:00PM\nDate: Thursday\, January 16\, 2020 \nTime: 6:30 p.m. (Doors open at 6:00 p.m.) \nLocation: Performance Theater\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum \nFREE EVENT\, but please RSVP! \nRSVP HERE \nJoin us for a free screening of the award-winning documentary film Rising Voices/Hóthaninpi: Revitalizing the Lakota Language at the museum! The screening is complementary programming to the current special exhibit American Ballads: The Photographs of Marty Stuart on display in the special exhibits gallery at the museum through January 31\, 2020. American Ballads includes a section of stunning photographs of the Lakota people. \nFive years in the making\, this multi-platform project tells the story of a powerful threat to a Native culture – one that comes through TV sets and social media sites\, through tweets and comic strips and the daily news. The menace is the English language\, and the victim seemingly marked for extinction is the Lakota language itself. \nFor the Lakota people\, it’s a local problem\, but it’s just one instance of a massive global one – a worldwide epidemic of language extinction. The project includes a one-hour documentary film. The film is serious but unconventional\, at times describing life on the reservation from the Lakota perspective. Woven through the documentary are sections of four short films by Lakota filmmakers made especially for inclusion in Rising Voices/Hótȟaŋiŋpi. \nThe film is a portrait of a culture\, an unflinching look at the language loss and a probing analysis of the revitalization efforts that have brought hope to the Native speakers on the Lakota reservations of North and South Dakota. \nThe film is a collaboration between Florentine Films/Hott Productions and The Language Conservancy.
