SUMMARY:49th Annual Fall Folk Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – Exchange Place Living History Farm will usher in autumn when it hosts the 49 th edition\nof its Fall Folk Arts Festival. Always eagerly anticipated – and especially so after last year’s event was\ncancelled by COVID-19 — this harvest season celebration will be held on Saturday\, September 25\, from 10\nam until 5 pm\, and Sunday\, September 26\, from noon until 5 pm. Admission is $5\, with those\nunder the age of 12 admitted free. With major support from the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes\, all\nproceeds go towards the care of the farm’s animals and the continued restoration and preservation of the site\,\nlocated at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport\, Tennessee. And this year\, because the virus remains a\npresence in our region\, all CDC protocols will be followed\, including keeping the historic buildings\nclosed\, and STRONGLY URGING all visitors to wear masks and maintain a safe distance from\nothers. \nArtists from around the region will gather to demonstrate 19 th century crafts\, as well as to sell a wide array of\ntraditional folk arts and hand-crafted arts of today. Plants for fall planting will also be available\, as well as\ndried flowers\, seasonal crafts\, local honey\, goat milk cheeses\, salsas and hot sauces\, and stone ground\ncornmeal\, grits and more. \nIn addition\, several acclaimed heritage artists will be on the grounds during the weekend. George\nMcCollum\, a long-time member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild\, will be making his widely-celebrated\nminiature white oak baskets (on Saturday only). Master crafter Heather Ashworth\, of the Arrowmont School\nof the Arts in Gatlinburg\, will be offering two traditional broom-making workshops on Sunday\, at noon and\nagain at 2:30 pm. Students will bind two whisk hand brooms\, using broom corn and colorful cord. The cost of\nthis unique workshop is $65 and includes all materials. Registration is required by Sunday\, September\n19\, 2021 at heather4trees@gmail.com. (It must be noted that the classes will only be held if at least five\npeople enroll.) \nA highlight of the festival will be an extensive display of historic clocks and watches curated by master clock\nmechanic Rod Groenewold and members of the Watauga Chapter of the National Association of Watch and\nClock Collectors. Rod has been fascinated by clocks and watches for more than forty years\, and now he and\nthe other members of the group will display and sell part of their collections of historic timepieces. The group\nis also inviting festival visitors to bring in clocks and watches for free appraisals. A silent auction will offer three\nantique clocks from Rod's collection to the highest bidders. One is an eight-day keywind clock that dates to\n1919\, one is a cast-iron mantle clock made in 1890\, and the third is an Ansonia Clock Company “Antler” clock\,\nmade around 1905. These clocks will be on display and can be bid on at their booth\, with the proceeds\nbenefiting Exchange Place. \nHistory is always alive throughout the farm. While the log kitchen will be closed as it undergoes a restoration\,\nthe Eden’s Ridge Hearth Cookery Society\, and our energetic Junior Apprentices\, will prepare some of the foods\nthe Preston family would have eaten in the mid-nineteenth century\, using the bread oven and an outdoor fire\n(weather permitting). They will also be demonstrating gourd crafting in the yard of the restored Cook’s Cabin.\nThe blacksmith’s shop will be open\, demonstrating the various tasks that made the “smithy” such a valuable\nperson in antebellum America. Behind the blacksmith’s shop\, sorghum will\, once again\, be milled and cooked\n(only on Saturday\, please note). Mules will do the milling in the morning (they will not be available for rides or\nfor petting)\, and the cooking process will be done throughout the afternoon. Our resident fiber artists – better \nknown as the Overmountain Weavers' Guild — will demonstrate the intricacies of spinning and weaving on the\nRoseland porch and in the Burow Museum. Boy Scout Troop #387 will be demonstrating rope-making\, and\nthey plan to sell whatever ropes they create\, with all proceeds being donated to Exchange Place.\nActivities for the youngsters are always prominent during these Exchange Place fetes\, and children of all ages\nwill not only get to play the kinds of games that the Preston family would have played\, but they will be\nencouraged to try their hands at some of the "chores” that were expected of young people on an antebellum\nfarm\, such as creating toys and grinding corn. \nThe traditional Fall Scarecrow Challenge will not be held this year. There will\, however\, be an area set aside\nwhere visitors can add to the creation of the Exchange Place scarecrows\, and learn their long and interesting\nhistory. However\, other popular Festival traditions remain\, including being able to meet and greet all of the\nheritage breed of animals that live on the farmstead all year long\, and listening to the wide selection of\nregional musicians who provide an Americana soundtrack to the surroundings. (A schedule is listed below\, but\nplease note that it is always subject to change.)\nOne of Exchange Place’s most popular events every year is Witches Wynd\, a Halloween-based\nstorytelling adventure. As of this writing\, no decision has been made about how\, or if\, it will be\npresented this year. An official announcement will be forthcoming. \nFor more information\, you may call Exchange Place at 423-288-6071\, write to\nexchangeplacefestivals@gmail.com\, or visit our website at https://www.exchangeplace.info. And\nplease remember that all existing CDC protocols will be followed\, including social distancing\, and\nwe are strongly urging everyone to wear a mask. \nExchange Place is a living history farm\, listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, whose mission is to\npreserve and interpret the heritage of mid-nineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange\nPlace is a non-profit organization maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and is supported by\ndonations\, fundraisers\, memberships and grants. \n \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY\, SEPTEMBER 25 \n10 – 11 am KINGSPORT COMMUNITY BAND\n11 am – noon CHRIS LONG\nnoon – 1 pm STRAWBERRY JAM\n1 – 2 pm STATE STREET STRING BAND\n2 – 3 pm RENAISSANCE STRINGS\n3 – 4 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND\n4 – 5 pm ABINGDON THUMB STRUMMERS \nMUSIC SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY\, SEPTEMBER 26 \nnoon – 1 pm\n1 – 2 pm RED AND GREY\n2 – 3 pm STRING BREAK\n3 – 4 pm JUNIOR APPRENTICES OLD-TIME BAND\n4 – 5 pm

SUMMARY:Jesslee from The Voice
DESCRIPTION:Jesslee skyrocketed to national recognition after turning both Blake Shelton’s\, and Kelly Clarkson’s chairs on NBC’s The Voice. Having appeared on national television 5 times and exiting the show at what is now being called “the perfect time” by her team\, Jesslee has turned the momentum of the show into an incredible jump-start to her already fast rising career. \nSince her appearance on the national television show\, Jesslee has shared the stage along side notable artists including Thomas Rhett\, Dierks Bentley\, Cole Swindell\, Cam\, Kane Brown\, LOCASH\, RaeLynn\, Uncle Kracker\, Wynonna Judd\, Joe Nichols\, Thompson Square\, Parmalee\, Cassadee Pope\, Craig Campbell\, and countless others. JessLee aggressively tours both in the United States and internationally headlining and appearing on festivals in France\, Spain and Denmark\, while playing some of the BIGGEST main stages in the American country music scene. Stages like Country Fest in Cadott\,WI\, a headlining sold out slot at Freedom Fest at the Port St Lucie\, Florida Civic Center\, and the legendary Eddies Attic in Atlanta\, GA are a few of the capacity or near capacity shows recently on Jesslee’s calendar. \nJessLee continues to set records as an indie artist. She has already seen unprecedented success on social media having eclipsed over 15 million video views in only 3.5 months! She has reached 46 Million + ORGANIC impressions with 16.1 Million + reactions in fewer than 28 days at the end of 2020 into January 2021. Jesslee is currently outpacing almost ALL female baby acts at major labels with her engagement vs like percentage. JessLee has appeared as a feature on CMT\, and has astoundingly charted 45 weeks in 2019 and 2020 on Apple Music’s “Country Hot Tracks”! \n2021 is looking like a breakout year for Jesslee. With several HUGE festivals and international dates already on the books\, Jesslee has been touted as the “Changing of the guard” ushering in a new era of powerful female vocalists. Trace Adkins said of “Jesslee\, “I like female vocals that are just powerful just pow sit you back in your seat.“ Kelly Clarkson had similar things to say about Jesslee. She was quoted as saying\, “Jesslee is amazing\, she is a phenomenal singer”. Jesslee’s manager\, Steve Virginia\, a 15 year music industry veteran\, said\, “Jesslee is flat out the best female vocalist I have ever heard live! No offense to Carrie\, Martina or any of the other iconic female singers” (as he chuckled). Her power and grip on her craft is unparalleled–coupled with the fact that she is one of the best writers in town… mark my words\, Jesslee is a game changer.”

SUMMARY:Eighth Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 12th\, the State of Franklin Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)\, are hosting their Eighth Annual Bell Ringing in honor of Constitution Week. The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill School\, located at 214 East Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library. The program will focus on the history of the First Amendment to the Constitution that reads\, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech\, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble\, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” The program will honor the freedom of religion with Reverend Samuel Doak’s speech at the Battle of Kings Mountain\, the freedom of the press\, and the freedom of assembly. Several heritage groups will be participating\, including the Kings Mountain NSSAR\, the Overmountain Victory Trail Association\, and participation from other local chapters of the NSDAR. Another treat of this year is the ringing of a very large locally restored antique bell cast in Ohio\, and believed to have rung in church members for worship in upper East Tennessee. \n\nThe event will follow CDC guidelines. Social distancing will be observed on the lawn of the schoolhouse\, and there is plenty of space for guests to spread out. Please bring your own chair and a bell to ring! Seating will not be provided on site. Oak Hill School is currently undergoing a restoration funded through a preservation grant from the NSDAR. The historic building was a school and a site of assembly\, so it’s the perfect location to celebrate the First Amendment and the Constitution. \nThe Daughters of the American Revolution began the tradition of celebrating the Constitution. In 1955\, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into law on August 2\, 1956\, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The State of Franklin Chapter of the NSDAR has been based in Jonesborough since 1929. \n\nThe Heritage Alliance is dedicated to the preservation of the architectural\, historical\, and cultural heritage of our region and to providing educational experiences related to history and heritage for a wide range of audiences. For more information\, please call our office at 423.753.9580\, or contact the organization via email at info@heritageall.org. Additional information can also be found online at https://www.heritageall.org/.
