SUMMARY:Capitol Theatre: Ernie Thacker Benefit
DESCRIPTION:Ernie Thacker is a deeply beloved bluegrass artist whose life took a tragic turn in April 2006. The tour will feature select artists that will to perform at MerleFest 2018 or have performed previously at the festival: The Way Down Wanderers\, The Barefoot Movement and Andy May.\n\nThe Way Down Wanderers\nEqual parts fast-paced and soulful\, 5-piece modern-folk Americana act\, The Way Down Wanderers\, draw listeners in with energy\, originality and soulful generosity. Playing\, performing and writing together for just 4 short years\, the Wanderers have built an enthusiastic and fast-growing following. Youthful and professionally trained\, these young men captivate audiences with soaring instrumentals\, foot stomping sing-alongs and a lively stage show and have created a buzz for themselves with their unplugged\, off-stage encores. The band’s debut\, self-titled album\, produced by Mike Marsh of the Avett Brothers and recorded at Sonic Ranch in El Paso TX\, is now available wherever music is sold. Front-men and founders\, Austin and Collin\, met in their hometown of Peoria\, IL when they joined the same folk band and embarked on their first tour at the ages of 14 and 18 years old. The two became fast friends and soon began writing music together\, ultimately forming The Way Down Wanderers when Collin was 16 and Austin\, 20 years old.\n\nThe Barefoot Movement\nMemorable melodies\, lush harmonies\, and exciting instrumentation: the music of Nashville\, TN’s The Barefoot Movement is made up of all of these things and more. With one shoe-less foot firmly planted in the world of roots music\, while the other wanders anywhere from the styles of pop to rock to R&B\, their genre busting sound may be hard to define\, but it is clearly infectious to anyone who hears it. Centered around the soaring vocals and songwriting of lead singer and fiddler Noah Wall\, the band has been touring since 2009\, and their most recent release was produced by Chuck Plotkin (Bruce Springsteen\, Bob Dylan) and Hank Linderman (Eagles\, America). Heralded by CMT Edge as “one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene\,” the music remains as down to earth as their intention for members of their audience: sit back\, relax\, take your shoes off\, and stay a while. With crowds teeming with enthusiasm at every performance\, and new fans joining the fold across the nation\, word is surely spreading and the message is clear: barefoot is better. Won’t you join the movement?\n\nAndy May\nVeteran singer/songwriter\, mandolinist\, and champion guitar picker\, Andy May\, infuses his songwriting and shows with his trademark creativity\, humor\, and consummate musicianship. He draws from a deep well of traditional American music and his writing taps into styles from blues to Bluegrass\, old-time country to contemporary folk\, traditional reels to roots-rock. He often co-writes with his wildlife biologist-Master Gardener-lyricist wife\, Lauren\, who brings a certain earthiness and wit to their joint efforts.\nAndy’s latest album\, Room for Roots\, has played nationwide on independent Americana and Country Music radio\, with multiple original songs charting. The album itself made Roots Music Report’s 2016 Top Americana Country Album Chart.\nAlso an educator and mentor\, Andy has provided performance opportunities for hundreds of young musicians at music festivals for nearly three decades through his beloved Acoustic Kids Showcases. This is his 18th MerleFest.\nJohnson added\, “We are delighted to showcase some of the finest artists from MerleFest lineups. MerleFest regulars tell us that they can hardly wait for every April to arrive\, and now they don’t have to! We believe that the fans who catch a MerleFest On the Road show will be more enthusiastic than ever for the festival in April.”\nMerleFest 2018 will take place from April 26 – 29 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro\, N.C.\, where the MerleFest on the Road artists will be joined by Kris Kristofferson\, Jamey Johnson\, Rodney Crowell\, Rhiannon Giddens\, Elephant Revival\, The Devil Makes Three\, a Midnight Jam hosted by Town Mountain and Jim Lauderdale\, among many others. The MerleFest website (www.merlefest.org) provides additional information about the festival\, including the full released lineup\, artists details\, and the opportunity to purchase tickets.\n

SUMMARY:Jonesborough: I Am Home Opening Night Gala
DESCRIPTION:The play I Am Home\, a compelling theater piece created from the stories of the people of Jonesborough’s past and present\, and featuring an incredible cast of seventy community members\, comes back home to perform at the McKinney Center beginning February 23. \nThe play features stories of Jonesborough\, and the courage\, strength\, humor\, and tenacity of its people\, in this play made up of dozens of vignettes\, adapted from oral histories that were gathered over a year-long process. \nThe current cast is comprised of actors of all ages\, and from many diverse backgrounds. Many of the adult actors have commented on what an important experience it is for them to be playing a role of someone from their own community- a real person\, who may be sitting in the audience when the show is presented. Dana Kehs\, an actor in the show\, as well as the show’s costumer\, plays the role of Virginia Kennedy\, and said\, “I feel honored to play Mrs. Kennedy\, and help tell the story of the work she and her husband have done for Jonesborough. It is incredible to be in a play that is so real\, that the person you’re playing might show up that night at the performance.” \nThe stories in the play are taken from oral histories\, and are all based on true events\, or\, as playwright Jules Corriere likes to say\, “They started out true.” The vignettes cover a wide range of time periods\, to include Jonesborough’s famed Buffalo Soldier\, Alfred Martin Rhea\, to Sidney Smallwoood’s recollections from his grandmother\, who was a little girl during the Civil War\, to Alfred Greenlee’s accounts of Jonesborough’s railroad days\, life growing up on Depot Street\, and his role in the integration movement of the Town’s schools. Vignettes about the migrant march\, the coming of electricity and the effect it had on families out in the country\, and memories about coming to town for the first time\, and visiting beloved businesses such as Lavender Grocery\, Hoss McCall’s and Jarman Shoes\, and of course\, the Jackson Theatre\, all help to paint a picture of the Town’s continued changes\, growth\, and perseverance. All of these stories also speak to the important sense of what it means to find “home” in Jonesborough. \nThe play was originally performed in the McKinney Center back in 2011 before it was renovated\, as a project initiated by the International Storytelling Center\, and later adopted by the Town of Jonesborough. The original intent of the play was to embrace the Town’s legacy of storytelling by telling its own story. Jimmy Neil Smith\, founder of the National Storytelling Festival\, brought in Community Performance International artists Dr. Richard Owen Geer\, Jules Corriere\, and Iega Jeff\, to develop a unique play that told Jonesborough’s fascinating story. Composer and lyricist Heather McCluskey and her son\, composer Brett McCluskey\, were brought in to create five original songs for the show. \nAfter spending a year collecting oral stories from local community members such as Alfred Greenlee\, Sidney Smallwood\, Nancy Robinson\, Sue Henley and nearly eighty others\, the play was crafted as a way to bring people together through their shared stories\, highlight the important stories of the people who helped shape the community\, and provide a sense of pride in community\, all while strengthening neighborhood bonds\, as the large cast of actors and crew worked together to bring the show alive. The original show proved its purpose\, creating a strong community among the participants that has since radiated out in the community in many ways\, including the creation of the Yarn Exchange Radio Show\, the story-based radio show now in its seventh season. \nThe McKinney Center\, now fully restored\, is welcoming the play to be performed back in its original home. Stage manager and founding Yarn Exchange member Phyllis Fabozzi stated\, “I think it is important that we’re performing at the McKinney Center again. This is where we started\, and what this place has become now is really powerful.” Fabozzi is likely speaking to the fact that the building\, whose story is featured in the play\, was once a building meant to separate the community\, as it served as the African American school from 1940-1965 when integration was complete. Now\, the building serves to bring people together\, through storytelling and the arts. \nThe show will run February 23\, 24\, 25 and March 2\, 3\, 4. Performance times will be Fridays at 7:30 PM\, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm\, and Sundays at 2:00pm. Tickets are $14 general admission\, $12 for seniors and students. Special rates are also available for groups of 15 or more. To purchase tickets or for more information\, call the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423-753-1010 or online at jonesborough.com/tickets.

All of these stories also speak to the important sense of what it means to find “home” in Jonesborough.\n \nThe play was originally performed in the McKinney Center back in 2011 before it was renovated\, as a project initiated by the International Storytelling Center\, and later adopted by the Town of Jonesborough. Composer and lyricist Heather McCluskey and her son\, composer Brett McCluskey\, were brought in to create five original songs for the show.\n \nAfter spending a year collecting oral stories from local community members such as Alfred Greenlee\, Sidney Smallwood\, Nancy Robinson\, Sue Henley and nearly eighty others\, the play was crafted as a way to bring people together through their shared stories\, highlight the important stories of the people who helped shape the community\, and provide a sense of pride in community\, all while strengthening neighborhood bonds\, as the large cast of actors and crew worked together to bring the show alive. The original show proved its purpose\, creating a strong community among the participants that has since radiated out in the community in many ways\, including the creation of the Yarn Exchange Radio Show\, the story-based radio show now in its seventh season.\n \nThe McKinney Center\, now fully restored\, is welcoming the play to be performed back in its original home. Now\, the building serves to bring people together\, through storytelling and the arts.\n \nThe show will run February 23\, 24\, 25 and March 2\, 3\, 4. Performance times will be Fridays at 7:30 PM\, Saturdays at 2:00pm and 7:30pm\, and Sundays at 2:00pm. Tickets are $14 general admission\, $12 for seniors and students. Special rates are also available for groups of 15 or more. To purchase tickets or for more information\, call the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423-753-1010 or online at jonesborough.com/tickets.\n

SUMMARY:Jonesborough Repertory Theatre: The Foreigner
DESCRIPTION:THE FOREIGNER\nMAR 2 – 11\, 2018 \nSYNOPSIS \nThe scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSeuer\, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend\, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So “Froggy\,” before departing\, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins\, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister\, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister’s pretty fiancée is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. What he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys.” \nDIRECTION \nDirector: Janette Gaines \nAsst. SUMMARY:Capitol Theatre: William Wild
DESCRIPTION:The Capitol Theatre of Greeneville’s Appalachian Homegrown Series continues in March with William Wild.\nWilliam Wild is the moniker of 24-year-old Alternative singer-songwriter Garrett Sale. Born and raised at the foothill of the Appalachian Mountains in Knoxville\, TN\, Sale began to pursue music while attending The University of Tennessee.\nIt was there that Sale worked on his first collection of recordings with Knoxville friends and fellow musicians\, eventually releasing a self-titled LP under the name “William Wild” (the nickname of a local homeless man).\nSale then embarked on a solo journey through Europe\, where he wrote four of the six songs on his new EP\, Steady Now. Continuing with the layered vocals\, l…ush strings\, dark tones of the debut album\, Steady Now explores Sale’s search for peace while wrestling with self-pity\, guilt and materialism.\nThe title track is a beautifully intense experience as he sings “Oh death won’t you give me a second chance. I’m looking for an easy way out. I need it more than the company I’m searching for.”\nThe album’s most cutting song “When I’ve Been Gone” is also his most personal\, written from the perspective of his father who was homeless for 5 years and battling addiction. It’s an emotional experience as he sings “What about those times I almost changed? What do they mean?”\nThe opening song “Sleeptalk” finds him consumed by anxiety with a romantic relationship to stabilize himself. “Even when you run like a bullet shot out of a gun\,” he sings\, “I’m gonna let you know where you need to be”.\nHazy guitars\, dusty keys\, and blurry pedal steel illuminate the recordings of weighty songs immersed in loss\, fear of failure\, and the worthiness of human existence. With plush nostalgic pop sensibilities\, Steady Now radiates tranquility. In an atmosphere of warmth\, the listener is invited to delve into psyche of kindred spirits. It is there that unfaltering refuge is found.\nTickets: $10\nDoors Open: 7:00pm\nShow Time: 8:00pm\nConcessions Available – FREE WIFI\nWebsite: www.williamwildmusic.com\nFacebook: www.facebook.com/williamwildmusic\nVideo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=icyG4zF_tsM\nType of Music: Indie Folk\nCome if you like: Van Morrison\, Crosby Stills & Nash\, Ben Howard
