SUMMARY:Tanya Tucker Concert
DESCRIPTION: \nIn 1974\, Rolling Stone ran a cover story on Tanya Tucker with the headline that said “You’re Gonna Hear From Me.” Truer words have never been spoken. For four decades\, her sultry voice and vivacious stage presence has helped to make her one of the most admired and respected female vocalists in the Country Music genre.\nAnd\, the best is yet to come for this future Country Music Hall of Fame member. With a new album forthcoming\, the power house vocalist is set to remind listeners just why artists such as Miranda Lambert and Gretchen Wilson consider her to be one of their biggest influences. She’s lived a life full of love and heartbreak\, and bounced back no matter the odds. In the crazy world of the music business\, Tanya Tucker defines the word “legend\,” but also “survivor.”

SUMMARY:Radio Bristol Farm & Fun Time
DESCRIPTION:Radio Bristol Presents: Farm & Fun Time\, a live radio show at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum on Thursday\, April13\, at 7:00 p.m. with guest performances by The Malpass Brothers and The Price Sisters. Hosted by Kris Truelsen and featuring musical breaks by house band Bill and the Belles\, the program also features the Appalachian Sustainable Development Farm Report with Corbin Hayslett\, a recipe segment\, and much more!\nRadio Bristol Presents: Farm & Fun Time is a revival of WCYB radio’s Farm & Fun Time show which broadcast live from a studio inside the General Shelby Hotel in downtown Bristol. In the 1940s and the 1950s\, Farm & Fun Time was an important program in the history of early bluegrass music and helped to establish the careers of legendary performers including Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs\, the Stanley Brothers\, the Osborne Brothers\, Jim and Jesse McReynolds\, Mac Wiseman\, The Sauceman Brothers\, and Curly King & The Tennessee Hilltoppers.\nTickets to be part of the studio audience are $25 with open seating; doors open at 6:30 p.m.\nPURCHASE TICKETS – CLICK HERE \n\nABOUT THE MALPASS BROTHERS\nAs young boys\, Christopher and Taylor Malpass soaked up the music of their granddad’s phonograph records. Christopher earned his first talent show trophy at age 7\, and Taylor was playing mandolin by the time he was 10. Today\, they promote the work and music of classic country artists they treasure while creating new music and making their own mark in the lineage of a rich American cultural heritage.\nWith sincerity\, honesty and an utter ease on stage that belies their years\, their smooth vocal blend and skillful musicianship layer infectiously into the deep respect they pay to legends who have paved the way. Add the funny\, off-the-cuff quips between the two 20-something siblings\, and the engaging concert becomes a magnetic time-traveling journey to when a calmer rhythm reigned supreme.\nThe Malpass Brothers toured with the late Don Helms\, former steel guitarist for Hank Williams\, have opened for music legend Merle Haggard on multiple tours and appeared on stages from the Shetland Islands to Ryman Auditorium to Merlefest. Gifted musicians and songwriters\, the brothers have shared billing with artists including Ray Price\, Willie Nelson\, Doyle Lawson\, Rhonda Vincent\, Marty Stuart\, Doc Watson and more. The title cut video from their “Memory That Bad” album hit CMT Pure Country’s Top Ten. Their most recent self-titled recording\, produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson\, was released by Crossroads’ Organic Records in 2015.\nIf you like cornbread & hush puppies\, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers.  If you like sweet tea\, barbecue & collards\, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers.  If you like clean fresh air over a freshly-plowed field\, if you like a great big ol’ corn puddin’ at a homecoming covered dish\, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers.  That’s a promise.  (And you don’t lie about a covered dish supper.)\nThis is the real deal\, folks. There is no pretense. This is music steeped in the legacy of the Louvin Brothers\, Johnny Cash\, Marty Robbins\, Hank Williams\, Sr. & others.  Count on classic\, real country. Count on new Malpass tunes. Count on a couple of old-time traditional gospels. Count on their probably coming down into the house at intermission and asking what you’d like to hear.  Count on giggles and ribbing between brothers\, along with daddy on the bass\, who’s bound to be thinking\, “What the hell are they doing now?” Count on some big\, high man hair\, and maybe an Elvis twitch or two. Count on lines at the CD table … and count on logging on to see where they’ll be next.\nWebsite: https://themalpassbrothers.com/ \nABOUT THE PRICE SISTERS\nThe Price Sisters began singing together around the age of three and learned harmony while singing along with their parents at home and family gatherings. Around nine years of age\, they began taking instrument lessons\, and were soon performing locally and regionally as The Price Family.\nLauren\, the older twin by five minutes\, primarily sings the harmony vocals. She recalls being influenced by the harmony singing of The Whites and trying to mimic that vocal sound\, even at a young age. She has developed her skills on the mandolin\, studying in-depth the style of the Father of Bluegrass Music\, Bill Monroe. While she began mandolin lessons at an early age\, it wasn’t until she attended a music workshop at 15\, a week-long Monroe-style mandolin class with Mike Compton\, that she began to put more effort into her musical abilities. She realized that if she were serious about playing bluegrass\, she wanted to start where it all began. While she has matured and progressed in the Monroe-style\, she also wants to develop her own sound on the mandolin. As such\, she continues to study old-time and traditional tunes as well as the styles of mandolin masters of old\, and is enjoying lessons from mandolin great\, Bobby Osborne.\nLeanna is the band’s main lead vocalist and fiddler\, but she and Lauren also trade lead and harmony duties as needed for a particular song. Leanna cites present-day vocalists Alison Krauss\, Gillian Welch and Ginny Hawker as being influences in her vocal style\, yet she also notes the emotion and feeling with which Monroe sang as impacting her technique as well.  Leanna\, too\, cites the workshop she and Lauren attended as having a great impact on her desire to pursue the original\, traditional bluegrass music. While listening to Monroe’s music\, Leanna especially concentrated on Kenny Baker’s fiddling\, stating that Kenny is probably her biggest influence now. She feels he always knew exactly what to play and when\, and she simply just likes his style and how he played. Leanna also has had the opportunity to learn directly from a former Bluegrass Boy\, Byron Berline\, and particularly enjoys his smooth style. She also appreciates the energetic\, yet traditional style of Jason Carter.\nThe Price Sisters have performed at festivals and events from Michigan to Georgia\, and Colorado to Maine. A few of their appearances have included Bill Monroe’s ‘Bean Blossom Festival\,’ and RFD-TV’s ‘Cumberland Highlanders Show.’ They have performed for live radio broadcasts on the legendary ‘Wheeling Jamboree\,’ and Ohio University’s WOUB ‘Showcase Showdown\,’ and have been guest performers on the ‘Cumberland Mountain Music Show.’ They have opened for numerous bands including IBMA female vocalist of the year\, Dale Ann Bradley\, and The Kenny and Amanda Smith Band\, and have also been on-stage guest performers with various bands including ‘The Lost and Found\,’ ‘The Spinney Brothers\,’ and ‘David Davis and the Warrior River Boys.’ They have also made numerous appearances at many venues in the eastern Kentucky area. With their college band\, the Mountain Music Ambassadors\, they have participated in live performances for PBS’s ‘Song of the Mountains\,’ ‘WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour\,’ WKYT-TV\, Lexington\, Kentucky\, and recently returned from a 10 day tour of the Peoples Republic of China. While they continue to travel and perform the bluegrass music they both love\, Lauren and Leanna are also currently pursuing degrees in music\, with concentration in traditional and bluegrass music\, at Morehead State University\, Morehead\, Kentucky.\nWebsite: https://thepricesisters.com/

SUMMARY:“William Preston and the Making of America”
DESCRIPTION:Bristol\, Virginia – Dr. Jim Glanville of Blacksburg\, Virginia will speak before the Bristol Historical Association and guests on Monday\, April 10 on the program entitled “William Preston and the Making of America”. The meeting will be held at 6:30pm in the J. Henry Kegley Meeting Room of the Bristol Public Library and is free and open to the public.\n \nDr. Jim Glanville speaks often on a range of topics related to the early history of Southwest Virginia\, especially on Holstonia\, as he coined it.  Holstonia\, primarily covers the counties of Washington\, Smyth in Virginia\, and Sullivan\, Hawkins counties in Tennessee.\n \nGlanville’s upcoming program describes the way in which the Virginia system of county government led eventually to the development of America.  It is exemplified by the life of William Preston who was the surveyor of Botetourt\, Fincastle\, and Montgomery Counties.  At one time these counties encompassed Southwest Virginia and earlier reached to the Mississippi River. At the time of Preston’s death in 1783 Glanville estimates that his land-speculating ventures had earned him $70 million in equivalent modern money.\n \nExtended members of the William Preston family lived in Bristol and Washington County\, Virginia.  Robert Preston was also a surveyor and educated in the craft at Smithfield\, Virginia and built a homestead located now at Exit 7\, I-81. His Walnut Grove home\, currently being restored by the BHA\, has many similarities to the historic Smithfield home.  There are few stories that would better parallel the history of our own region.\n \nJim Glanville\, a native of London England\, is a retired chemistry professor living in Blacksburg\, Virginia. His professional career included jobs in the chemical industry and academia\, his last twenty years at Virginia Tech. Since his retirement in 2004 he has made an encore career speaking\, writing\, and publishing extensively on “Holstonia” and identified significant discoveries on the pre-1800 history of Southwest Virginia.\n \nThe April 10th meeting is in partnership with the Bristol Public Library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”. The program is open to the general public to attend. Contact Tim Buchanan\, President\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, by e-mail; buchanan03@bvu.net.  Visit our Facebook page for details\, BRISTOL HISTORY or our website\, www.bristolhistoricalassociation.com.
