SUMMARY:Farm Fresh Appalachia Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the First Annual Farm Fresh Tour \nThe regional Farm Fresh Appalachia Farm Tour is a partnership between Appalachian RC&D Council\, Appalachian Sustainable Development and Boone Street Market. This year will be the first of what we hope is an annual event connecting our region to our local farms. Participating farms in Tennessee will be open June 23 and in Virginia on June 30\, to welcome the public to experience the farm behind the scenes. Farms may provide guided and self-guided tours\, demonstrations\, and hands-on experiences\, and goods for sale. You choose your schedule for the day and how many farms to visit. All farm experiences are family friendly for all ages. \nHere’s How it Works: \n\nBuy a car pass: Online or in person at two locations: Boone St. Market\, Jonesborough\,TN or Abingdon Visitors Center\, Abingdon\, VA(CASH ONLY) Only one pass is needed per carload.\nCost: $15 for one day or $25 for both\nMap your route for farms you’d like to visit and plan your day.\nBring a cooler\, freezer bags\, and some cash. Many farms offer on-farm sales on tour day – fresh produce\, baked goods\, plants\, and other farm products.\nDress for the weather (rain or shine!) and wear sturdy shoes. Skip the perfume and heavily-scented body sprays — or the bees and bugs will find you. Don’t forget your sunscreen!\nArrange a dog sitter – No dogs are allowed on the tour as they can pose issues with farm animals.\nMost importantly\, Have Fun!\nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Spoken Word\,Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:David Joe Miller is honored to be co-hosting Spoken Word OPEN MIC! with Dr. Wendy Welch author of “The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap” and ” “Fly Or Fall\, The Strangely Hopeful Story of Foster Care and Adoption in Appalachia.”\n\nWelch will discuss her recent book “Fall or Fly: The Strangely Hopeful Story of Foster Care and Adoption in Appalachia.” The nonfiction work discusses foster care and adoption against the backdrop of the opioid epidemic in Appalachia. The book uses what Welch refers to as “storytelling journalism\,” relying on interviews the author conducted with more than 60 social workers\, parents and children from the region who have been impacted by the system.\n\nSpoken Word OPEN MIC invites all spoken word artists and writers to sign up and share their work.  Each participant signs up for ten minutes of stage time to tell a story\, recite or read poetry or their written work.  There is no theme\, no competition and no censorship.  The show may contain adult material so it’s best suited for audiences of ages sixteen and older.\n\nDavid Joe is the former staff storyteller for the National Storytelling Association in Jonesborough and created the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild in 1994.  He’s been a professional storyteller since 1989 and has been producing spoken word events since 2015 in both Asheville\, NC. and Jonesborough.\n\nSpoken Word Open Mic takes place at The McKinney Center\, 103 Franklin Ave. (corner of Franklin Ave. and East Main St.) Jonesborough\, TN.  Show begins at 7pm on Wednesday June 27th\, sign up begins at 6:30.  Free parking and accessible for everyone.\n\nFor more information please contact David Joe at davidjoetells@yahoo.com or visit https://www.storytellingcalendar.com/

SUMMARY:Jonesborough Train Talk Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Chuckey Depot Museum at Jonesborough to Open Train Talk Exhibit \nJune 28\, 2018 \n\nThe Chuckey Depot Museum at Jonesborough has just announced the opening of a new exhibit\, Train Talk\, which focuses on various communication tools\, verbal and non-verbal\, utilized by the railroad. The Town of Jonesborough will host the exhibit opening at the museum on Thursday June 28 at 6 p.m. The exhibit will run through January 2019. \n\nThe exhibit allows exploration in how railroad technicians communicated during the day\, at night\, across distances and during challenging weather conditions such as heavy rain\, dense fog and snow. The Train Talk exhibit will help museum visitors gain an appreciation for the bells\, whistles\, flags\, lanterns and lights effectively used by the railroad for decades prior to modern electronic communication methods. \n\nThe Chuckey Depot Museum’s regular hours are Wednesday through Friday\, 1 to 5 p.m.\, Saturday\, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday\, 1 to 5 p.m.  The museum is also taking part in Jonesborough Days Festival and will have extended hours during that time: Friday and Saturday\, June 29 and 30\, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday\, July 1\, 1 to 8 p.m. \n\nThe Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, TN and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. \n\nChuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 S 2nd Ave. For more information call 423.791.3869. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society.

SUMMARY:International Quilt Challenge Visits Jonesborough
DESCRIPTION: \nThe Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center and Old Town Emporium will host the premiere traveling art exhibition known as the Hoffman Challenge in July featuring a collection of nearly 40 quilts and 15 home décor items.\n \nHoffman California Fabrics was founded by Rube Hoffman in 1924. Rube was a New York textile jobber and a veteran in the garmet district. \nSince that time\, Hoffman California Fabrics has been designing and manufacturing premium screenprinted and hand-dyed fabrics for independent retailers.\n\n \nIn 1988 the company began the Hoffman Challenge\, which has grown to be a unique traveling quilt\, and home decor collection.\nCurrently\, twelve collections travel coast-to-coast within the USA and to several Canadian locations. This year the Hoffman Challenge is celebrating its 30th year.\n \n\n\nThe Challenge started with 94 enthusiastic quilters\, and the number of entries has grown to more than 700. While the majority of the entries come from the United States\, a wide variety of international entries are also received. \n \nEach year\, the top entries are grouped into traveling collections and visit quilt and fiber shows\, seminars\, quilt shops and quilt-and doll-makers guilds nationwide and in Canada. All entries must include a designated fabric each year and the 2017 selection that will be showcased is Fabric P4299 from the mastery digital print collection. The 2018 challenge fabric is from the ShineOn! collection and will celebrate the Diamond Anniversary of the Hoffman Challenge.\n \nThe exhibition will be on display at the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center & Old Town Emporium Gift Shop July 3 through July 28. The Center’s normal operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  For more information on the Hoffman Challenge\, visit hoffmanchallenge.com or call 423.753.1010.
