SUMMARY:Hiking Adventure- Flint Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our first-ever HIKING ADVENTURE will be adventurous indeed! We’ll head out to a remote corner of Holston Mountain called Flint Rock. It’s a STEEP & strenuous climb to a fine view of South Holston Lake and of Holston High Knob. This hike will also offer a chance to view a variety of unusual native plants and wildlife. We’ll cover about 8 miles of rugged\, rocky terrain.\nPlease note that this is a DIFFICULT hike. Participants must be prepared for stiff climbs\, slippery\, rocky terrain\, and the presence of stinging nettle\, black bears and venomous snakes. Wear long pants and sturdy hiking boots. Bring plenty of food and water. \nWe’ll meet at Warriors’ Path pool parking lot\, departing PROMPTLY at 8 AM to carpool to the trailhead. It’s about an hour-long drive to the start of our hike. \nNote that you MUST preregister if you wish to participate.

Bi-weekly on Saturdays all summer!\nThis is a dam released river so please be prepared for very cold water by bringing warm gear to wear no matter how hot the weather is for your own safety against hypothermia (paddling tops\, bottoms & shoes. No flip flops\, crocks or cotton clothing).  \nMust have proper whitewater gear to go such as helmet\, spray skirt\, flotation & a Type III PFD along with a boat that is designed for whitewater. Contact Debbie if you need anything or have questions. \nAlso we stop for a break about half way so don’t forget your power snacks! SUMMARY:ACA Basic Swiftwater Rescue Course
DESCRIPTION:MUST REGISTER \nThe intensive 2-day ACA Level 4 Basic Swiftwater Rescue Course covers a wide range of topics that will help both recreational users and professional rescuers learn the skills necessary to conduct and lead a rescue on moving water. Topics include accident prevention\, non-technical and technical rescues\, scene management and a variety of other practical techniques and applications that will help keep you and others safe. Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on simple\, commonly used skills. Fundamental and more advanced techniques for dealing with hazards that carry greater risks for both victim and rescuer\, such as strainers\, rescue vest applications\, entrapments\, and pins\, also are practiced. Scenarios will provide an opportunity for participants to practice their skills both individually and within a team/group context. This course should be considered mandatory training for anyone who spends time in and around moving water. No previous rescue experience required.

SUMMARY:Open House at McKinney Center
DESCRIPTION:Meet faculty\, tour the building and get a discount on classes on August 10\, 10am – 2pm at the McKinney Center during their Fall Open House and class demonstrations. \n\nAttendees will have the opportunity to do hands on activities such as working with clay\, print making\, dancing\, guitar\, etc.  Faculty who teach at the McKinney Center will be present to demonstrate what you will learn from art classes. \n\nThere is also an Early Bird discount of $10 off each class you register for between now and August 10.  After August 10\, the McKinney Center still offers a family or multi-class discount.  The first class is regular price and each additional class is $10 off. \n\nScholarships are also available for students Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Through a simple application process each child in the family can receive a class tuition free.  The scholarship also covers all supplies for the class.  Scholarship recipients and their families are asked to then volunteer 10 hours during the semester. \n\nAdults can earn 50% off classes if they volunteer throughout the year 20 hours or more. \n\nThe catalog is full of choices for kids\, teens\, and adults this semester. For example\, for the youngest students ages 18 months to 4 years old\, there is Sensory Art for Children designed to introduce young children to art processes\, materials\, and creative exploration. \n\nKids in grades Kindergarten through sixth can take Art Adventures or Creative Construction taught by Donna Bird.  These art classes are fun and experimental sessions where kids make and take-home paintings\, drawings\, and sculptures and also learn the foundations of art such perspective and shadowing.  There are also age appropriate classes in clay\, dance\, Guitar\, drama\, writing\, and film.  New classes for children include Shadow Puppet Theater\, Home School Story Collecting\, Ballet\, Jazz\, Tap\, and Flute. \n\nDo you have a creative teen on your hands?  There are plenty of options at the McKinney Center for this age group.  The Basics of Drawing\, Mixed Media\, or Anime Art Club are perfect for that teen who loves to draw and doodle but needs clear instruction and guidance. Teens have the choice of taking ceramic classes and painting classes such as Adventures in Watercolor\, Basics of Oil Painting or Plein Air Painting.  There are also teen options for Mosaics\, Film\, Writing\, Ballroom\, Jazz\, Guitar\, Bucket Drumming\, and Flute.  Workshop and one day classes are also available for teens such as Alcohol Ink Art\, Paper Composition\, Pottery\, Zentangle\, and Glass Fusion. \n\nAdults classes are also available this semester with a wide variety of options.  Hand-Building with Clay and the Potter’s Wheel are all classes that immerse your hands in clay!  There are sessions for beginners and more advanced students.  Drawing and Painting are very popular with adult students whether you are a beginner or experienced.  There are several beginner and basic drawing classes for adults such as Basics of Drawing and Mixed Media Drawing. If painting is your interest artist and long-time teacher Sharon Squibb is teaching Adventures in Watercolor and Basics of Oil Painting.  Ginny Walls is also teaching a daytime Watercolor class for adults and Plein Air will be instructed by Allison Parker.  Beverly Jenkins is back this semester teaching two Mosaic classes and Jules Corriere will be leading a Writers Group. Adults can choose from several music and dance options this semester including\, Bucket Drumming\, Guitar\, Flute\, Ballet\, Ballroom\, and Jazz. \n\nThis semester’s workshops include\, alcohol Ink Art\, making a Clay Toad House\, Pottery Glazing Techniques\, 2D Paper Composition\, Zentangle\, Clay Jack-O-Lantern\, and several Glass Fusion options. \n\nEarly registration secures a spot in class as well as a $10 discount through August 10.  Individual class costs vary.  A Fall Open House will be held at the McKinney Center on August 10 from 10am – 2pm. This will be an opportunity for the public to see what the fall classes have to offer. DESCRIPTION:Scoop Fest is returning to Tennessee’s Oldest Town on Saturday\, August 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be 30+ flavors of ice cream to sample throughout Main Street shops and eateries. Tastings include flavors that range from traditional to unexpectedly delicious and everything in between. \n\nA new feature to Scoop Fest will be the Chuckey Depot Sundae Station\, where festival-goers can build their own ice cream sundae in front of the Chuckey Depot Museum. Additional family fun will be found throughout downtown Jonesborough. The little ones will have a chance to meet the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre Princesses\, Judy Butterfly will be doing free face painting\, Jonesborough Elementary school staff will be at the Visitor Center handing out free books and the famous Book Mobile will be in the Visitors Center parking lot. \n\nTicket packs are available in increments of 15 tickets for $10.00. Each tasting will require one ticket. It is recommended to purchase tickets online as there will be a limited amount of tickets available. DESCRIPTION:Mid-Appalachian Hiking Club\nDrive: 20 miles ($3)  \nIt is a fairly steady climb from Rock Creek Recreation Area (2360 ft.) to the falls (3400 ft.)\, a gain of 1040 feet. However\, none is too steep and by taking our time we should be able to manage without difficulty. After leaving the camping area we will be inside Unaka Mountain Wilderness Area for the entire hike. Roan Mountain offers beautiful dark sky views away from the lights of the Tri-Cities\, making a great opportunity to enjoy a night under the stars. Ranger Hylen will kick off your evening starting at the Carver’s Gap Parking Lot on Roan Mountain with a 0.5 mile hike to the top of Round Bald on the Appalachian Trail. Once there\, enjoy a star party until 11PM. Guests are welcome to stay and enjoy th ebest views of the meteor shower lasting until early morning. The peak will occurr the nights of August 11-13\, but will share the night sky with a near full moon.\nThis program is free and has no limit as it does not take place on State Park property.

DESCRIPTION:Unicoi County Hospital hosts free outdoor storytelling concert series Aug. 12\, Sept. 9\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe field beside Unicoi County Hospital will be alive with music from Unicoi County High School Bluegrass Band\, storytelling from a flatbed trailer stage and family-friendly lawn games like cornhole and hula hoops on Monday\, Aug. 12\, and Monday\, Sept. 9\, both from 5:30 to 8 p.m. \nCelebrated Asheville storyteller Connie Regan-Blake headlines the August concert with mountain lore\, true-life tales and side-splitting stories in her performance. \nOn Sept. 9\, fan-favorite West Virginia tall-tale teller and five-time winner of the West Virginia Liars Contest Bil Lepp will take the stage. Both storytellers are sponsored by the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough as part of its collaborative initiative with the hospital to use storytelling as a means of healing\, communication and engaging communities. \nThe public is invited to both events\, which are free\, and encouraged to bring lawn chairs\, blankets\, a picnic and the whole family. A food truck will be onsite from 5:30-7 p.m.\, and hula hoops\, jump ropes\, cornhole games and a book giveaway will be hosted by STRONG Kids\, a joint program of Ballad Health\, Niswonger Children’s Hospital and Speedway Children’s Charities designed to help improve the lives of children in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. \nAt each concert\, the Unicoi County High School Bluegrass Band will perform at 6:30 p.m.\, followed by the storyteller’s performance at 7 p.m. \n“We want Unicoi County Hospital to be a place of wellness\, a place of connection for our entire community\,” said Eric Carroll\, hospital administrator. “This concert series is one way to bring the community together.
