SUMMARY:Jonesborough: Polyphony Marimba Concert
DESCRIPTION:Music on the Square to host special event \nThe Polyphony Marimba\, a nationally recognized marimba band\, will be bringing their Zimbabwean style music to Tennessee’s Oldest Town on Thursday\, August 22nd. They will perform a special show for Music on the Square\, Jonesborough’s weekly Friday evening concert series. The performance will take place in front of the courthouse at 7 p.m. in historic downtown Jonesborough. This event is in addition to Music on the Square\, which will still continue on Friday\, August 23rd. \nPolyphony Marimba was founded in 2010 with a mission to get an acoustic ensemble of nine players together who wanted to make a life out of the roots of southern Africa\, while contributing their own creative expression to that tradition. Polyphony brings a big acoustic dance sound with intricate vocal harmonizing on spiritual themes. Over the past eight years\, the band has played over 300 concerts around North America and has sold over 5\,000 copies of its three albums. \nOver the last five years\, completely self-operated\, Polyphony has established a steady circuit of gigs\, particularly in the eastern United States. Peter Swing\, founder of the group\, has been teaching the music of Zimbabwe for over 30 years and actively builds Zimbabwean style marimbas which are sold all across the country. Swing learned that the music grows in power and artistry\, the more the players put their lives into it\, and the larger the audience is that appreciates it. Expanding the cathartic and joyful energy inherent in this music is what Polyphony Marimba is about. \nPolyphony Marimba’s special performance will be free and open to the public. For more information regarding the event\, please contact the Jonesborough Visitors Center at 423.753.1010

ID’S WILL BE CHECKED. \n*This is not an official beer mile or certified course* \nDisclosure: Mountain Mile Beer Challenge\, Fleet Feet\, and Yee-Haw is not encouraging irresponsible or dangerous behavior. You are held responsible for your own actions. \nRULES AND REGULATIONS:\n1. Each competitor (men and women) drinks four cans of beer and runs four laps (start – beer\, then lap\, then beer\, then lap\, then beer\, then lap – finish).\n2. Beer must be consumed before the lap is begun\, within the transition area.\n3. The race begins with the drinking of the first beer in the transition zone to ensure the competitors run a complete mile.\n4. Competitors must drink the entire canned beer and the cans should not be less than 355ml (the standard can volume) or 12oz (the imperial equivalent).\n5. No specialized cans or bottles may be used that give an advantage by allowing the beer to pour at a faster rate. ie “super mega mouth cans” or “wide mouth bottles” are prohibited.\n6. Beer cans must not be tampered with in any manner\, ie. no shotgunning or puncturing of the can except for opening the can by the tab at the top. The same applies with bottles – no straws or other aids are allowed in order to aid in the speed of pouring.\n7. Each beer can must not be opened until the competitor enters the transition zone on each lap.\n8. Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap). Note: Vomiting more than once during the race still requires only one penalty lap at the end. \n9. Participants are required to tip the empty beer can over your head at the end of a chug to verify an empty vessel…. runners are also required to yell “Yee-Haw!” after each can is finished. Runners who do not say Yee-Haw four times total during the duration of the event will be penalized. \n10. No complaining. Drink your beer and run! Have fun\, smile and be safe!

SUMMARY:Abingdon: Living History Muster Grounds
DESCRIPTION:AUG\n24\n2019\n\n\nFAMILY FUN | HISTORY/HERITAGE | PERFORMANCES\nLiving History at the Abingdon Muster Grounds\nABINGDON MUSTER GROUNDS\, 1:00 PM-4:00 PM \n\n\n\nOvermountain Men and their families come to life at the Abingdon Muster Grounds during Living History Days 2019. These events highlight the importance of the Washington County\, Virginia militia and the Revolutionary War Battle of Kings Mountain\, 1780.  There will be demonstrations related to life in backcountry Virginia during colonial times.  This event has activities for the whole family!  Join the Overmountain Victory Trail Association\, Blacks Fort Chapter-DAR\, and General William Campbell Chapter-SAR as we bring history to life. \nCertified by the National Park Service as the northern trailhead of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, the Abingdon Muster Grounds is a picturesque 9-acre park with significant history.  When a call was issued for militia to respond to British inroads in the South\, men from all over the region moved into action.  Under the leadership of Colonel William Campbell\, 400 Virginians set out to join patriot militia from modern-day Tennessee\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Georgia.  After a two week campaign\, the Overmountain Men fought the Battle of Kings Mountain with overwhelming success.  Thomas Jefferson said it was “the turn of the tide of success which terminated the Revolutionary War\, with the seal of our independence”.
