On Saturday\, October 7\, 2023\, almost 75 years since the waters all but erased the town of Butler\, locals and visitors will gather to remember its past while celebrating the vibrant future of this beautiful area of the state.  \nOld Butler Day\, a family-friendly festival sponsored annually by the Butler Ruritan\, will be hosted on the grounds of the Babe Curtis Park. Festival attendees will enjoy great food\, music\, vendors and experience life in Old Butler through tours at the Museum of Butler and the W.S. Stout store located at the park. As visitors tour the museum\, the historical exhibits bring to life the early days of Old Butler and depict the extraordinary effort in relocating this small town\, showing why it is known as “the town that would not drown”.

SUMMARY:Spot on the Hill
DESCRIPTION:A Spot on the Hill\, the original\, research-based play returns this October to the Old Jonesborough Cemetery. Now celebrating its ninth season\, this edition features new characters. New stories include Miss Ethel Brown who was a teacher at Booker T. Washington School and Jonesborough Elementary School\, brick and stonemason John Rhea\, Dr. William R. Sevier who was instrumental during the cholera epidemic of 1873\, and Samuel Irvin who has the oldest marker in the cemetery. Irvin’s marker is even older than the cemetery itself. You’ll meet them and many more! Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to sit on. Seats are not provided at the cemetery. Come and listen to real stories of real lives among real tombstones. \nPerformances for A Spot on the Hill will take place at 6:30 p.m. on October 13th\, 14th\, 20th\, and 21st. There will be a 2:00 p.m. matinee performance on October 14th in the Jonesborough Visitors Center and a 2:00 pm matinee in the cemetery on October 21st. At the outdoor matinee\, there will be ASL interpretation provided by BridgeEAST. The indoor performance on October 14th is ADA accessible. Tickets are limited\, and sell out fast\, so make sure you buy yours today. Tickets are $10.00 and proceeds benefit the Heritage Alliance’s educational programs and initiatives\, including ongoing programming in Jonesborough’s historic cemeteries. \nAudience members should arrive 15 minutes prior to show time. Parking is available at the First Baptist Church and downtown. It is a short walk up East Main Street to the cemetery from the First Baptist Church lot. A golf cart courtesy shuttle will be available for guests who need it. This program is not suggested for children less than 10 years of age. DESCRIPTION:Special Viewings for Annular Solar Eclipse \nAn annular solar eclipse is when the Moon perfectly aligns with and blocks the Sun. Due to its distance from the Sun\, the Moon looks smaller\, thus you can still see a ring of sunlight surrounding it. The eclipse is a unique sight\, and you have to be in the narrow path of this alignment to witness it. \nThough the Tri-Cities is not close to this path\, we will still be able to see part of the Sun blocked by the Moon. \nSpecial viewings of this partial solar eclipse will take place on Saturday\, October 14 in downtown Kingsport and on the campus of East Tennessee State University. There will not be a special viewing at Bays Mountain Park. \nVIEWING LOCATIONS \nThe Kingsport Public Library will have two solar telescopes from the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club set up to view a magnified view of the Sun. The viewing will take place in Glen Bruce Park from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on October 14. \n\nThe ETSU Physics Department and the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club are partnering to provide safe\, telescopic views of the Sun. The viewing will take place in the ETSU student parking lot on W. Walnut Street in Johnson City (across from the Johnson City Family Practice) from 11:46 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. on October 14. \n\nIf the weather is too cloudy or rainy\, the viewings will be cancelled. \n\nWhether you make it to a viewing or not\, you may want to have your own solar glasses to dim the light of the Sun to safe levels. The gift shop at Bays Mountain Park has these glasses for sale for only $2 each. \n\nPlease Note: NEVER look directly at the Sun without proper protection. \n“Eclipses are special events and the perfect fun for the entire family\,” said Planetarium Director Adam Thanz. “Whether you can visit a place to view\, use your own solar glasses or project with a colander\, be safe and understand you are in direct alignment with the Sun\, Moon and Earth.” \nFor information about other events\, activities and programs offered by Bays Mountain park\, visit www.baysmountain.com. \nAbout Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium \nAnnually\, more than 200\,000 visitors pass through Bays Mountain Park making it one of the State of Tennessee’s Top 50 Most Visited Attractions\, according to the State of Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 14\, 2023\, our area will be treated to a partial solar eclipse as the moon passes\nbetween earth and the sun blocking out a portion of the solar disc. Although this is not a total eclipse\,\nthose in our area will still experience an eclipse magnitude of 54%. Join us at Sycamore Shoals State\nHistoric Park and participate in several activities geared around the eclipse as you enjoy one of nature’s\nmost spectacular wonders. \nJoin our interpretive staff to learn the difference between a total and an annular solar eclipse. Hear how\nthe 18 th century Native people and early settlers regarded eclipses and learn about Sycamore Shoals\nState Park’s unique connection with the moon. \nYou should never look at the sun without proper eye protection. ISO certified solar viewing glasses are\navailable in the park gift shop for only $2.95 each. There will be other ways in which you can safely view\nthe eclipse. For an up-close view you can take a peek through the telescope which will be set up on the\npark grounds. DESCRIPTION:A Spot on the Hill\, the original\, research-based play returns this October to the Old Jonesborough Cemetery. Now celebrating its ninth season\, this edition features new characters. New stories include Miss Ethel Brown who was a teacher at Booker T. Washington School and Jonesborough Elementary School\, brick and stonemason John Rhea\, Dr. William R. Sevier who was instrumental during the cholera epidemic of 1873\, and Samuel Irvin who has the oldest marker in the cemetery. Irvin’s marker is even older than the cemetery itself. You’ll meet them and many more! Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to sit on. Seats are not provided at the cemetery. Come and listen to real stories of real lives among real tombstones. \nPerformances for A Spot on the Hill will take place at 6:30 p.m. on October 13th\, 14th\, 20th\, and 21st. There will be a 2:00 p.m. matinee performance on October 14th in the Jonesborough Visitors Center and a 2:00 pm matinee in the cemetery on October 21st. At the outdoor matinee\, there will be ASL interpretation provided by BridgeEAST. The indoor performance on October 14th is ADA accessible. Visitors will experience these mysterious\ncustoms firsthand through special after-hours tours of the historic Taylor House. \nTwo centuries ago\, our ancestors perceived death and mourning quite differently than we do.\nToday\, we push through the funeral process as quickly as possible. Those who came before us\,\nhowever\, took a much more intimate approach. Disease\, war\, infant mortality\, and other causes\nmeant that death was a persistent companion especially before the days of modern medical\nadvancement. Prior to the advent of funeral homes\, the process of preparing a deceased family\nmember for burial was carried out at home\, and all manner of traditions\, superstitions\, and\nceremonies that had been practiced in the old world continued here in the new. These ancient\nfuneral customs and mourning rituals\, many of which may seem bizarre and macabre today\, have\nbeen all but forgotten. At “Death Comes to Sabine Hill” visitors can learn more about these\ntraditions and see just how differently death was viewed and accepted in the past. \nThese special candlelight tours will occur on Friday\, October 20 th and Saturday\, October 21st\,\nand offer guests a chance to experience the historic Taylor House after dark! DESCRIPTION:Kingsport\, TN – If you’ve lived in the Tri-Cities/Southwest Virginia region for even just a couple\nof years\, you know all about Witches Wynd (that second word is pronounced “why-nd\,”\nrhymes with “kind”)\, the annual storytelling event held at Exchange Place\, Kingsport’s own\nLiving History Farm. One of the most unique and popular public events held anywhere in\nAppalachia\, this year’s collection of eerie tales will be offered (for the 31 st consecutive year!) on\nFriday\, October 20 and Saturday\, October 21\, beginning each night at 8 pm. And while Friday\nnight is virtually sold out\, there are still some tickets available for Saturday. \nPeople begin to check in at Exchange Place – located at 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport\,\nTennessee – around 7:30 pm\, and are randomly placed in four groups. Then\, around 8:00 pm\,\nwhen it is good and dark (prime time for those all “ghoulies and ghosties”!)\, each group is led\nacross the road of the historic farm. At this point they separate and are taken to four different\nlocations where\, over the course of the next two hours\, everyone gets to listen to Halloween-ish\ntales told by some of this region’s finest storytellers. And then\, just when you think the night is\nover\, you get served a special treat – there are cookies and hot cider waiting for you in\nRoseland’s back porch\, a sweet way to end the evening. \nOur storytellers this year are Judy “Butterfly” Farlow\, Hannah Harvey\, Katie Hoffman\, and Libby\nTipton. Oh\, and in case anyone might be concerned that our stories are grossly macabre\,\nplease know that our aim is to entertain\, not frighten. Witches Wynd has\, over the years\,\nproved to be popular with teenagers and pre-teens\, as well as their parents. It is probably fair\nto say that watching the evening news can be far more upsetting! \nTickets for Witches Wynd are $10 for everyone\, and can be purchased by calling Exchange\nPlace at 423-288-6071. We are now equipped to take credit cards (though please note that\nthere will be a 50-cent surcharge attached to those orders). All the money we collect for this\nannual event\, as well as for anything that takes place out at Exchange Place\, is used to benefit\nthe animals who live year-round at Exchange Place\, as well as for the continued restoration and\npreservation of the site\, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nExchange Place is a living history farm whose mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage\nof mid-nineteenth century farm life in Northeast Tennessee. Exchange Place is a non-profit\norganization maintained and operated entirely by volunteers and is supported by donations\,\nfundraisers\, memberships and grants.

JAM Kids introduces music through small group instruction on acoustic instruments common to the Appalachian region such as guitar\, banjo\, and fiddle. Instruments will be provided or students may bring their own. Other instruments may be introduced as to be determined by instructors.  Lessons may be paid for per class or for up to 10 classes at a time. Scholarships are available upon request. Field trips\, visiting artists and an introduction to the rich history of music unique to each local community further supplement program offerings. Each JAM program is encouraged to foster musical traditions by teaching local styles of traditional mountain music and dance to children. Instructors are also encouraged to teach students to learn music by ear\, as to preserve oral traditions as much as possible. Other teaching methodologies and instructional skills are covered in regional professional development and training sessions held multiple times per year and hosted by JAM. JAM also encourages student engagement across programs with regional performance and learning activities throughout the year. It is recommended that each program provide financial assistance through scholarships to children in need. The program model bases tuition fees on student lunch status: $10/week for full pay children\, and $5/week for reduced pay children. \nClass sizes typically have a student teacher ratio of 8:1 or less. JAM mandates that each affiliated program conduct criminal background checks on their instructors\, directors\, and other staff members and volunteers. Programs must be held in public facilities accessible to the community. Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc prohibits discrimination against any persons on the bases of race\, color\, national origin\, disability\, sex\, gender identity\, religion\, reprisal\, political beliefs\, familial or parental status\, and sexual orientation. \nFor a full listing of affiliation requirements\, click here. \nHistory of JAM \nRealizing the need to preserve a vital aspect of mountain culture as well as the need for positive activities to underserved youth\, Helen White\, then a guidance counselor at Sparta Elementary School\, founded the first JAM program in Alleghany County\, NC in the spring of 2000 with help from other local musicians and educators. Interest in the program spread rapidly with assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts\, NC State Arts Council\, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and “The Crooked Road – Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.” \nIn 2007\, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation provided funding to allow the development of a regional infrastructure. The Dana Foundation\, Virginia Commission for Arts\, the Virginia Foundation for Humanities\, the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Harris and Frances Block Foundation and the Tides Foundation have provided funding for materials development. \n“Junior Appalachian Musicians” was incorporated in 2008 as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt corporation to promote a shared vision of JAM and to provide an umbrella through which to offer resources\, training materials and activities to benefit programs individually and collectively.
