SUMMARY:Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park: History at Home
DESCRIPTION:Each summer\, Sycamore Shoals presents our History at Home summer programming series\, providing the opportunity for park guests to participate in educational programs geared to both history and nature study. With this release\, we are pleased to be announce our programs planned for June 3 – 14\, 2020! \n\nIn keeping with CDC social distancing guidelines to prevent Covid-19\, we will host programs for groups of 10 or less\, therefore\, all guests MUST register in advance for the listed programs. We encourage attendees to bring masks and keep 6 feet apart from other guests. \nTo register for one or more of these great programs\, please visit  https://tnstateparks.com/parks/sycamore-shoals  and choose Upcoming Events in the left hand menu.   From there you will see all our upcoming programs.  Most programs are offered free of charge except for historic house tours of the Carter Mansion and Sabine Hill\, that will begin in mid-June.  There is also the opportunity to donate to Sycamore Shoals when you register for your free program. \n\nOur seasonal interpretive rangers for our 2020 summer season are Laura Ellis and Taylor Moorefield. \n  \nLaura Ellis returns to Sycamore Shoals as a 2nd year seasonal interpretive ranger.  Prior to her work at Sycamore Shoals\, she was a summer camp staff member.  This Fall\, Laura will be a senior in college working towards a degree in history.  Throughout the year\, she presents historic programs in period attire with the Washington County Regiment NC Militia and is on track to become a militia member. \n\nLaura’s area of expertise is Early American culture (from settlement to 1860). Her goal for this summer is to “delve further into my knowledge of colonial life\, especially in Southern Appalachia\, and share the knowledge with the public in hopes of preserving our local history for decades to come.” \n\nTaylor Moorefield is also no stranger to Sycamore Shoals. He enjoys re-enacting and living history\, and has participated in Liberty: The Saga of Sycamore Shoals for 12 seasons\, as well as being a founding member of Watauga Valley Fife and Drum Corps.  As a graduate of ETSU\, he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  An Eagle Scout and Woods Counselor at Land of the Sky Wilderness School\, Taylor is passionate about the outdoors\, wilderness education and primitive skills\, and inspiring the public to connect with the natural world in meaningful ways.   As an avid musician\, Taylor has sung in many choirs\, local and national\, plays fiddle with friend Spencer Bolejack\, and leads a Christian rock band. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the race will take place on the famed all-concrete high-banks without spectators in attendance as part of NASCAR’s effort to bring live competition back to a worldwide broadcast audience on FOX and PRN. \n“On behalf of everyone at Bristol Motor Speedway\, we sincerely appreciate the efforts of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee\, NASCAR and all of our state and local government and health officials who guided and patiently worked with us to make this happen\,” said Jerry Caldwell\, executive vice president and general manager\, Bristol Motor Speedway. “This has been a collaborative and very proactive effort to put our motorsports industry back to work and boost the morale of sports fans around the world\, while at the same time keeping the health and safety of all who will be on site the top priority.” \nNASCAR and Bristol Motor Speedway have developed a comprehensive plan reviewed by state and local health agencies to protect the health and safety of the competitors\, crew members\, employees and broadcast crews that will produce the race. DESCRIPTION:StoryTown Radio Show to Broadcast Production Honoring Veterans \nThis month\, the StoryTown Radio Show honors Memorial Day with a special broadcast as the cast performs a radio-play version of Jules Corriere’s one-act play “Not All That I Carry”. First performed as a stage show at the Jonesborough Senior Center. The play is based on stories from members of the Jonesborough Senior Center\, especially centering around the subject of World War I\, World War II\, and the Great Depression. \nSenior Center members who contributed stories for this production include World War II Medic Vern Dauerty; Veterans Bob Powers\, John White and Joe Allison\, Larry and Irene Richmond; Pam and Doc Johnson; Owen Colvin; Maggie Polden; Kathleen Dunworth; Shirley Rowan Meade\, and Harvey and Madge Crain. \nTheir time of sacrifice will feel familiar right now. During this time\, when homes are turned into offices\, schools\, and gyms\, we are facing a world much different than just a few months ago\, and the change was sudden. Just like the stories in this play\, each of us is\, in our own ways\, in the midst of making sacrifices. \n“That’s why I think this play will touch audiences today\,” Corriere explains\, “In my years of collecting stories\, I’ve heard tales of sacrifice\, in which people literally lived in a different world- across an ocean\, in a country with a different language\, and different environments. They are so inspiring. We can draw strength from these stories\, because they do offer hope. They made it through difficult times- and that lets me know I’ll make it through\, too. Because I come from them.” \nThe people in “Not All That I Carry” were called the Greatest Generation. They did what was asked of them\, and lived through very difficult times. We are all now living in historic and difficult times\, too. How we are dealing with these times here in Jonesborough has been heartening. \n“We’re reaching out to each other\, not physically\, but virtually. We’re supporting our local businesses at curbside pick-ups. Our educators have\, in a moment’s notice\, created engaging online learning opportunities for our children. We’re providing food to those in need through school lunch pick-up and at the food pantry. We’re doing great things\, even if in small ways. But each of our small sacrifices help to uplift us all.” Corriere says\, and finishes with a thoughtful question: \n“What will our generation be called\, after this global pandemic is over? Our actions will define that. DESCRIPTION:McKinney Center Offers Free Art Program Using Recycled Materials \nAre you at home and needing something fun to do in order to kill the time? Want to learn more about how you can reduce waste and give new life to your garbage and recyclables while making art? Join AmeriCorps member Lilith Erbach for the McKinney Center’s FREE Reusing Everything\, Making Art\, Keeping Engaged (R.E.M.A.K.E.) program. The program aims to educate and inform individuals in a fun and engaging environment where their creativity can thrive. This service-learning initiative is perfect for adults and teenagers\, and can be modified for children. The project is a perfect summer learning opportunity for those 9th grade and above. \n\nSome of the projects featured will consist of making tin can planters\, weaving with magazine pages\, making mini jar terrariums\, and creating jewelry out of plastic bottles. Each meetup is designed to utilize items attendees can find in their own home. In R.E.M.A.K.E.\, artists will be encouraged to upcycle unused materials\, and reuse garbage and recyclables. You can expect to leave with a better understanding of how to reduce waste while making practical art. \n\nThe Program will begin on May 23rd\, and will be held every second and fourth Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. until July 11th. The classes will be held via Zoom in order to make the class more accessible\, and to protect the health and wellbeing of all attendees\, volunteers\, and staff members involved. AmeriCorps surveys will be distributed via email for attendees to fill out after the events. SUMMARY:Heritage Alliance: Virtual Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Alliance will host its first Virtual Fieldtrip Day on Monday\, May 18. Throughout the day\, the Alliance will offer tours and activities online for students learning from home. The day will include a look at their one room schoolhouse Oak Hill School\, an interactive tour of Main Street Jonesborough\, a tour of the third-floor bedroom of the Chester Inn Museum\, an interactive artifact exploration\, and much more. The Heritage Alliance will be streaming and posting content for students from 10:00 a.m. that morning to 2:00 p.m. that afternoon. \n\n“Normally we welcome students in person to our historic sites\, but it’s not safe right now to have a large group exploring together\, so we wanted to offer an alternative for students who are learning from home\,” Executive Director Anne Mason explains. “We also wanted to offer this experience to students who were supposed to come with their schools this spring and weren’t able to. This is a way for students\, parents\, and educators to engage with local history. Hopefully this will encourage them to visit the physical sites in the future when it’s safer to do so.” The tours and activities on May 18 will be streamed from and posted to the Heritage Alliance’s Facebook page\, as well as the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum’s Facebook page. In the coming week\, the Heritage Alliance will post a packet to their website that outlines what students and educators can expect to see and do on May 18. \n\n“We’ve been posting a lot of educational activities to our website\, including explorations of historic photos from our collection\, and a primary source activity with the cholera epidemic of 1873. Our Virtual Field Trip Day is a new\, educational activity for us\, and we’re really excited to share the historic buildings with the students\,” Mason adds. “We encourage students to log on with their families and ask questions. We want this to be as interactive as possible.” \n\nThe day will also include visits to the Christopher Taylor House\, the Chuckey Depot Museum\, and the Old Jonesborough Cemetery\, with some surprises thrown in. To help cover expenses\, the Heritage Alliance suggests a donation of $5.00-$7.00\, which covers the normal fee for a student during a fieldtrip. DESCRIPTION:The twelfth Annual Art in the Park held on the International Storytelling Center grounds is looking for artists and vendors for Saturday\, May 9\, 2020.  Art in the Park is not just for artists and crafters this year. Organizers are looking for authors\, performers\, musicians\, storytellers\, and vocalists who wish to share their talents! \n\nSpring in Northeast Tennessee brings thousands of tourists to this area to see mother nature coming to life as the first redbuds and crocus bloom.  A favored tourist spot is Historic Downtown Jonesborough\, the oldest town in Tennessee\, which will be teaming with spring colors and decorations. \n\nThe goal of this show is to highlight the fine art produced in our region.  The Town of Jonesborough is dedicated to bringing the community closer together\, and show other communities the creative influence that the arts can bring to their quality of life.  It is imperative that the quality of this fine art show be maintained and offer patrons the opportunity to experience art of the highest standards.  Art and craft vendors will be eligible to win prizes: \n\nAwards \nBest of Show                     $500 \n2nd Place                           $300 \n3rd Place                            $100 \nBest New Artist  Free Booth Space next year \nBetween two and four honorable mentions may also be presented. \nOne “Best of Tasting” certificate will be awarded. \n\nPublic relations efforts will focus on drawing in a crowd that will be attending this event for the purpose of viewing and purchasing artwork. \n\nAnother popular aspect of Art in the Park includes the tasting area complete with wine samples\, mouthwatering chocolates\, tempting sauces and savory bread samples\, as well as the area’s own marketplace where folks can sample before they buy. “Best in Tasting” vendors may apply to sell their original creations at the event and provide samples. DESCRIPTION:The Washington County Heritage Fair will take place in Jonesborough\, Tennessee on Friday\, May 8th and Saturday\, May 9th. The heritage event is open to the public and specifically targets Washington County students through local heritage engagements that brings together local cultural and heritage organizations and sites to showcase local heritage and culture. This year the fair will consist of 3 parts including a Heritage Poster Competition for students in grades 5-8\, individual/organization exhibitions\, and a Living History Timeline. \n\nJonesborough Genealogical Society President Chad Bailey said\, “This event is in its second year\, and in celebration of the JGS’s 30th year\, the event has taken new meaning through an even more expanded and fun filled event.” “With the beautiful historic backdrop of the oldest town in Tennessee\,” Bailey continued\, “why not showcase the area’s history and culture to the next generation in a multi-generation setting!”  The Jonesborough Genealogical Society invites the public to attend the Washington County Heritage Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in Historic Jonesborough. Those attending are asked to begin the day at the Jonesborough Visitors Center and Emporium\, 117 Boone Street\, Jonesborough\, where participants can register and pick up a program and map of the events locations. The 5th-8th Grade Student Heritage Poster Competition Displays and the Individual/Organization Exhibitions the auditorium. \n\nThe 5th-8th Grade Student Heritage Poster Competition brings together area students from Washington County\, Tennessee public and private schools at the Jonesborough Visitors Center and Emporium through a combined learning experiences where students’ knowledge of local heritage and culture are presented in a unique and creative way through the use of primary and secondary source material displayed on a tri-fold board in three specific categories. Each project will be judged by judicial panel that have experiences and interests in the specific categories. Winners will be selected by grade and category and announced during the Jonesborough Genealogical Society’s Annual Meeting and Hall of Fame on Saturday\, May 9th at 9:30 a.m. at the Washington County-Jonesborough Library. Those wishing to have their students participate in this event\, whether teachers or homeschool parents\, please register your student using the registration form at jgstn.org/annual-heritage-fair/. The deadline for registration has been extended to Monday\, March 16th to allow more students to participate. \n\nThe Individual/Organization Exhibitions bring together over 20 local heritage and cultural organizations and sites in the Historic Jonesborough Visitors Center and Emporium\, which gives participants an opportunity to engage with heritage and cultural sites\, knowledge\, and techniques\, they may have never seen or used before. This exhibition provides youth and adults with a taste of public and private heritage and cultural sites\, in which\, they can visit at later dates to take in the educational experiences fully. In addition\, organizations will showcase their missions\, visions\, programming\, and projects to the public through the use of visual and/or oratory exhibitions. Knowledgeable individuals can showcase their individual research\, cultural work\, and craft to provide another perspective of learning to the next generation. More information on these presentations and demonstration will be announced. \n\nFinally\, the Living History Timeline\, which will be presented in Greenspace next to the Jonesborough Visitors Center; Central Christian Church Yard\, corner of Fox and Main Streets; and Mill Springs Park\, 104 Spring Street\, will consist of tradespeople and reenactors in three time period-based camps from pre-Revolutionary to early 20th Century regalia. The Living History Timeline present educational experiences through the visual representation of life throughout history\, which includes period clothing styles\, language\, techniques\, and experiences. In addition\, it provides a look at jobs and trades\, as well as economic\, social\, racial\, and gender stature throughout time. Beginning at the Jonesborough Visitors Center\, partakers will move through time by walking the streets of Tennessee’s oldest town where they can view and learn about the town’s preservation efforts and past as well as delving into topics and experiences in the town’s historical façade with its storied-past telling its own story\, creating an environment\, combined with the other two parts\, that sets local heritage and culture in motion\, so students and the public can create\, develop\, and cultivate their own sense of community and place within the region as a whole. \n\nIn addition\, other heritage sites will be open throughout town including the Washington County-Jonesborough Museum in the Jonesborough Visitors Center\, 117 Boone Street; the Genealogy and History Center in the Washington County-Jonesborough Library\, 200 Sabin Drive; the Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum (116 W. DESCRIPTION:Bluegrass\, Old-Time and Country Music Studies to present Virtual Showcase and Fundraiser\nJOHNSON CITY (May 4\, 2020) – A Virtual Showcase and Fundraiser will be presented Thursday\, May 7\, to benefit East Tennessee State University’s ongoing Bucs Help Bucs campaign. \nThis showcase will feature a compilation of videos recorded by students and faculty in ETSU’s Bluegrass\, Old-Time and Country Music Program. It will begin at 7 p.m. on Facebook Live and will be hosted by program director Dan Boner. \nThe idea for students to submit videos for a virtual concert came from senior ETSU bluegrass majors Sophia Chambers\, Mikaela Langley and Charly Smith. \nDuring the virtual concert\, viewers will be encouraged to support the Bucs Help Bucs effort\, a current fundraising campaign to provide relief to ETSU students and employees who are experiencing hardship resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. \nDonations to the Bucs Help Bucs campaign may be directed toward Student/Staff Emergency Funds\, which provides financial assistance to those who experience an unexpected loss or hardship affecting their ability to remain at ETSU; Bucky’s Food Pantry\, which aids those in need of food resources and raises awareness of food insecurity and hunger on the ETSU campus; or the ETSU Counseling Center\, which provides a variety of services\, including 24-hour counseling (in-person or electronic)\, access to psychiatric services\, and tools and resources to help students. \nTo date\, more than $70\,000 has been raised in the campaign\, which continues through May 22.
