DESCRIPTION:Unicoi\, Tenn. —  The Town of Unicoi is mixing up a different type of Christmas magic this year with its new “Christmas at the Caboose\,” which will be held Saturday\, December 12\, from 6-9 p.m. at the Tourist Information Center (106 Unicoi Village Place). \nThis COVID-friendly event will take the place of the town’s typical annual events including the Unicoi Christmas Parade\, Christmas at the Cabin and the “Taste of Unicoi” Christmas Open House\, all of which were canceled in light of the pandemic. \n“We’ve held the community’s safety as the top priority through all of this\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Kathy Bullen. “Each event was analyzed for potential COVID risks and we think this will be a safer option for everyone.” \n“Christmas at the Caboose” will include a free drive-thru light display\, created by professional designer Gabriel’s Christmas in Jonesborough\, around the Mountain Harvest Kitchen and a Christmas Village where guests can enjoy Christmas cakes\, treats and hot chocolate while favorite Christmas characters frolic to the sounds of the season. \nSanta and Mrs. Clause will be flying into the valley for a special visit and children will be allowed to place their “Letters to Santa” in his mailbox before catching their very own stocking! Santa will use a slide to deliver presents down to the children from atop the historic Clinchfield CRR 1111 caboose to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposure. \n“We think this is going to be a fun way to herald the Christmas season\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “One outdoor event will be much safer than the typical events we host while still giving residents a chance to celebrate with their neighbors.” \n“That sense of community is important to our residents\,” Mayor Bullen added. “So it’s crucial to find ways to adapt to this pandemic and reorganize our events accordingly.” \n“We’ve done that by setting up stations throughout the village\,” said Shelton. “After guests experience the drive-thru light display\, they can park and rotate through the village stations before heading back home to warm up.” \nThe Buffalo Pavilion will transform into the “Snowflake Snack Shack” and will serve delicious Christmas cakes\, hot chocolate\, and other tasty treats such as s’mores packs that families can use at nearby fire pits. \n“We’re going to have three fire pits scattered throughout the village so guests have room to spread out while roasting marshmallows and keeping warm\,” said Shelton. “Everything will be socially distanced\, grill sticks will be disposable and of course our food handlers will be taking even more precautions.” \nAfter sweet treats and gifts from Santa Clause\, families are encouraged to swing by “Santa’s Landing Zone” to take a photo with Santa’s antique sleigh and his favorite reindeer\, Mary. Local photographer Valerie Haney\, with Views by Valerie\, will be on site to capture guests’ Christmas moments and help preserve them for years to come! \nGuests may park in the MHK and Visitor Center parking lots while visiting the Christmas Village but masks and social distancing will be required when out of vehicles. DESCRIPTION:Theatre Bristol celebrates Christmas this year by bringing its holiday show to its State Street storefront windows during the month of December. This stage right at the street features Christmas Scenes based on traditional stories of Santa\, Mrs. Claus\, and the elves. With a bit of improv and holiday spirit\, Santa’s world comes to life in five walkable scenes of “Santa\, Working from Home too\,” “The North Pole\,” “ ‘A Christmas Carol’ On the Air\,” “Elves at Work… Sort of\,” and “Presents Under the Tree.”\nIn the windows\, Santa and Mrs. Claus are busy at work\, checking lists\, mapping the reindeer journey\, responding to letters\, and reviewing the elves’ toy-making. Sometimes\, though\, it’s time to take a break and make some cookies\, decorate the tree\, or take a nap. Visiting children may catch a glimpse of a wink or a smile from Santa. The elves make toys and wrap gifts to Christmas music all around. There are surprises too\, every visit is a new experience.\nWhile we cannot present our usual holiday production because of COVID\, we are pleased to bring this Christmas production to this new “stage;” offer some joy; and even support downtown Bristol businesses and restaurants with a special attraction. Christmas Scenes gives our creative team and actors a safe opportunity to share their craft and we hope it keeps Theatre Bristol in everyone’s hearts during this time.\nThe activity is free of charge\, and the Santa schedule and updates are available on Theatre Bristol’s Facebook page and at www.TheatreBristol.org. Whatever the city\, the objective is the same: to see The Nutcracker\, considered a holiday classic all over the world. Since it’s not possible to gather in the theatre this year\, the Kingsport Ballet and NPAC are bringing The Nutcracker to you virtually!\nThe Nutcracker is a story ballet performed in two acts\, based on the German tale\, The Nutcracker and the King of Mice. Pyotr Tchaikovsky\, a prominent composer already famous for his ballet scores of Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty\, set it to music. It was choreographed by the legendary Marius Petipa.\nThe Nutcracker gives us a glimpse of old-world tradition. It provides the warmth\, laughter\, and delight of a family celebration\, while interweaving fantasy and mystery to create a tale that everyone can enjoy.\nMost of us have had a time in our lives when we have felt ugly or unimportant\, but then someone comes along who believes in us\, and loves us for who we are\, not what we look like or what we can do. This person becomes our hero or heroine\, forever holding a special place in our hearts\, and we want to do whatever we can to honor them and make them feel special in return. Clara in The Nutcracker is just such a heroine. When everyone else sees the Nutcracker as a worthless\, ugly\, wooden doll\, in Clara’s imagination\, he is instead a true\, kind-hearted hero. She loves him with all of her heart\, and because she shows kindness to him\, he gives her the most beautiful Christmas gift that she receives: the gift of a glorious dream. Sound will be played through FM radio\, concessions will open at 5:30 p.m.\, a surprise visitor will arrive at 6 p.m. and the Christmas movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. \n“To finish up the year with a heart-warming Christmas favorite will give guests a little bit of hope\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “Despite the pandemic\, the holiday season is still about family and believing in the magic of the season.” \nLike past events\, the Clinchfield Caboose will support the screen with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot and event sponsor Ambrosound\, a local professional audio\, video\, lighting and staging company\, will handle all projection and audio. Organizers also tease that someone from the movie will make a surprise appearance during the festivities and have a special gift for every child. \n“I can give a little hint that the movie involves a train\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “Which will be a lot of fun since we’re showing it at the caboose. The Doug Hopson Buffalo Pavilion will house the concession stand and food-handling precautions will be taken\, including masks and gloves and one person to handle money while another handles food in an effort to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 exposure. \nThe movie will start at dark and guests are asked to remain in their vehicles except for restrooms and concessions\, and only one person from each car is allowed in the concession line. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMasks are required when guests are out of the vehicle and everyone is asked to please practice social distancing. DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, photographer Henry Horenstein shot album covers for upstart bluegrass label Rounder Records. But in his off-hours\, he soon became unofficial photographer to the culture of country musicians great and small\, and their dedicated fans. It’s a world that looks quite a bit like country songs sound: full of hard-working operators and lonely dreamers\, half-full glasses and scorpion belt buckles\, and a few tall hats\, boots\, and bottles as well. It’s the world of the honky tonk. \nA candid\, affectionate glimpse into the real country music scene as it was performed and lived\, Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music\, 1972—1981 is a parade through the early years of future great performers like Dolly Parton and Del McCoury\, and already established legends like Mother Maybelle Carter and Don Stover. It is a time capsule of an important era in country music set within family music parks and music festivals\, the Grand Ole Opry\, and Nashville’s Tootsies and other well-loved honky tonks. Horenstein’s lively portraits of the community preserve the scene where musicians and fans\, cowboys and townies\, converged to step out\, strum\, and strut their stuff.

SUMMARY:Special Exhibit: A Selection of Hard Rock’s Country Music Memorabilia
DESCRIPTION:The Birthplace of Country Music Museum and Hard Rock International have partnered up to bring priceless items from Hard Rock’s vast collection of country music memorabilia to Historic Downtown Bristol for exhibition. Hard Rock items featured in the museum’s new Honky Tonk special exhibit include costume pieces worn by Loretta Lynn and the Queen of Appalachia herself\, Dolly Parton\, and well-loved instruments owned by the likes of Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings\, and the iconic red-white-and-blue acoustic guitar belonging to Buck Owens. \nSeveral other Hard Rock items are on display in the main part of the museum. As a tip of the hat to the region\, Kenny Chesney’s Takamine G501s acoustic guitar is included in the collection; Chesney is among the first alumni of East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass\, Old-Time\, and Country Music Studies program to achieve fame. He also recorded his first demo at Classic Recording Studio in Downtown Bristol. One of Garth Brooks’ guitars\, a Roy Acuff guitar\, and an outfit worn by Carrie Underwood are also on display. \nA Selection of Hard Rock’s Country Music Memorabilia is on display in the Museum\, as well as shown in the newest special exhibit Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music\, 1972-1981\, a special exhibit of photographs by filmmaker\, educator and author Henry Horenstein.

At the end of the Civil War\, the South emerged with destroyed transportation and shipping lines\, a devastated economy\, and no labor force. The North and South agreed slavery was an unacceptable form of American labor\, but Black Americans were still an undesirable\, inferior race in need of control. Over the next 100 years\, the Appalachian South successfully re-established their system of racial caste under a new name\, “Jim Crow\,” a popular antebellum term. Join storyteller Mitch Capel\, along with Freedom Stories Director Dr. Alicestyne Turley and others as we explore the roots of Appalachian Jim Crow and its impact on how the region is viewed today.\n\nThis is a FREE event that will take place directly on ISC’s Facebook timeline. Don’t have Facebook? Martin Program for the Arts has announced their spring schedule of classes of experiential learning opportunities for both children and adults.  Registration is now underway for all upcoming classes.  All courses are led by experienced and supportive faculty in a safe and healthy environment. \n\nArt\, music\, writing\, crafts\, and dance will be offered this spring for students of all ages.  For children\, the program offers instruction for young artists who are ready to explore the world of art.  Students receive an introduction to art skills where activities and projects are organized to develop the understanding and experimentation with a wide variety of media\, techniques\, and process.  For older elementary aged students courses are taught to build their skills as artists including drawing and painting skills that will be taken to the next level.  Classes in writing\, film\, music\, and dance are also available for this age range including Art Adventures\, Creative Construction\, Homeschool Art\, Kids N Clay\, Young Potters\, Let’s Make a TV Show\, Anime\, Mosaics\, Ballet\, Tap\, Adventures in Drawing\, and Guitar. \n\nOfferings for older students and adults include a wide range of courses in pottery\, painting\, drawing\, paper art\, jewelry\, mosaics\, writing\, dance\, music\, and various workshops.  Director Theresa Hammons states\, “There is something for everyone here at the McKinney Center.  Most of our classes are for beginners.  But one of the great things about our offerings is that the class sizes are small\, usually no more than 8 – 10 students. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate and remember Martin Luther King Jr. this year\, the McKinney Center invites the community to join them in a month-long service project and a Virtual Event on January 18th\, 2:00 pm. Help us donate food to the JAMA Food Pantry then\, join us for an online stream on the McKinney Center’s Facebook page to see live readings from MLK’s speech\, local Black history\, and singing. \nAs we remember Dr. King\, we remember his call to service\, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” The McKinney Center is inviting the Jonesborough community to join in celebrating the service of Dr. King by participating in a food drive to support the JAMA (Jonesborough Area Ministerial Association) Food Pantry. The JAMA Food Pantry serves residents holding a Jonesborough\, Telford\, or Limestone addresses. In particular\, the Food Pantry needs cereal\, canned veggies\, canned meat\, boxed dinners\, canned fruit\, pinto beans\, kidney beans\, and other non-perishable foods. To donate food items please drop off any items at the McKinney Center until January 18th at Noon\, Monday through Friday\, 8 am to 5 pm. Please help us to feed our community especially after a very difficult year. We will be collecting food items from December 14th – January 18th at Noon. \nTo keep our community safe\, this year our usual “Peace Walk” will be replaced with a virtual event that will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King through song lead by Ubunibi-Afia Agbenyaga Short\, as well as MLK speech readings from and Karen Sullivan\, Brittany Butler\, and others.
