A transplant from Canada\, she has taught at ETSU for 28 years\, and is a founding member of the Boone Watershed Partnership\, a local non-profit that identifies and addresses water resources concerns in the Boone Watershed. When extreme weather events occur\, as a hydrologist and geoscientist\, I try to understand the nature and magnitude of the event by evaluating damage to critical infrastructure and by using data to estimate how often events of this magnitude might recur in our communities. This program describes work done by ETSU Geoscientists in the days and months following Hurricane Helene.\n\nSaturday Evening Program:\nDiscovering the Blue Ridge: Place-Based Nature Education at Blue Ridge Discovery Center\nby Lisa Benish\n \nLisa Benish is an environmental educator and the Executive Director of the Blue Ridge Discovery Center (BRDC) in southwest Virginia. SUMMARY:Masterpiece Mingle
DESCRIPTION:The popular event bringing together art\, music\, and great food returns to the McKinney Center this year on April 24 from 7 to 9 p.m.  This is the largest fundraiser for the McKinney Center each year as proceeds support scholarships for K-12 grade students who have financial needs and other educational programming throughout the year.  The event provides plenty of opportunities for art and music lovers to meet and mingle in a fun and elegant atmosphere as they admire the work of art they get to take home\, or even exchange with another adventurous guest. \n  \nThis event\, which sells out well in advance each year\, will feature an exhibit of 120 different works of art\, and each guest will take one of these works home. The artwork\, which has been donated by regional artists\, includes such mediums as watercolor\, acrylic\, ceramics\, fabric art\, jewelry\, woodwork\, and more. All pieces will be on display for guests to admire throughout the evening until the event is over\, and each guest takes their corresponding piece of art home with them. The fun part is\, that guests receive their artwork at random. Each artwork is assigned a number\, and each program the guest receives will correspond to one of those numbers. \n  \nGuests can keep their original mystery masterpiece\, or find other guests with whom they may “swap.” Amid the fun atmosphere\, guests will enjoy live jazz music by a combo from the Jazz Exchange. They will also enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction featuring more exquisite art\, great books\, and even top-quality art supplies.  Beer and wine will be for sale by Main Street Café and Catering. \n  \nThis unique event serves as the signature annual fundraiser for the McKinney Center. Tickets are $55\, which includes the event\, food\, music\, and the original piece of art each guest will take home. \n  \nTickets are limited to one-hundred twenty as this is the number of works of art that have been donated. To purchase tickets\, call the Visitor Center at 423.753.1010 or purchase online at Jonesborough.com/tickets. \n  \n##### \n  \nAbout the McKinney Center at Booker T. SUMMARY:Gin Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Formed in Tempe\, Arizona in 1987\, Gin Blossoms helped define alternative radio in the early ‘90s with their breakout major-label debut New Miserable Experience. Led by the gold-certified hit “Hey Jealousy\,” the album went on to sell more than four million copies\, delivering enduring singles like “Allison Road” and “Until I Fall Away” and cementing the band as power-pop mainstays. Their hometown legacy was officially recognized in October 2022\, when Tempe unveiled an honorary street sign renaming a section of 8th Street between Rural Road and Una Avenue as “Allison Road Avenue\,” celebrating both the beloved song and the album’s 30th anniversary.\nThey followed with the platinum-selling Congratulations I’m Sorry\, featuring the Top 10 smash “Follow You Down” and the GRAMMY®-nominated “As Long as It Matters.” Decades later\, their jangly guitars\, sharp hooks\, and emotionally resonant songwriting still hit with the same immediacy. Made up of Robin Wilson\, Jesse Valenzuela\, Bill Leen\, and Scotty Johnson\, Gin Blossoms continue to evolve without losing the sound that made them essential. Their latest album\, Mixed Reality (produced by Don Dixon and engineered by Mitch Easter)\, delivers 15 new tracks packed with chiming melodies\, wry lyricism\, and undeniable heart\, proving the band is as vital now as ever.\nInducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2017\, Gin Blossoms remain road-tested and fan-driven\, touring relentlessly and sharing stages with Collective Soul\, Barenaked Ladies\, and Hootie & The Blowfish. Reuniting once again with Blues Traveler for this year’s tour\, the longtime collaborators are building on the momentum of last summer\, when they took over the Jimmy Kimmel Live! stage for an epic mashup — an electric reminder that Gin Blossoms continue to turn nostalgia into something unmistakably alive

It’s time for an exciting afternoon of jumping\, racing and just plain “horsing around” on the front lawn of Allandale Mansion.\nHobby Horsing is a unique sport that involves participants riding stick horses for events like barrel racing and jumping courses. SUMMARY:Stories 'n More
DESCRIPTION:If you’re looking for the heart of storytelling in the town that basically invented the modern revival of the art\, Stories ‘n More is where the magic happens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild\, this weekly event is a staple of Tuesday nights in Tennessee’s oldest town. It’s less of a formal performance and more of a warm\, communal gathering where the oral tradition truly breathes. \n\n\nThe Atmosphere\nThe vibe is intimate and authentic. Held at the International Storytelling Center (or occasionally nearby local venues like the  McKinney Center)\, the evening feels like sitting in a very large\, very talented living room. \nWhat to Expect\n\n\nDiverse Tellers: You’ll hear from seasoned professionals who have graced national stages\, alongside guild members honing new material. \n\n\nThe “More” in the Name: While the focus is on spoken-word stories\, you’ll often find the night peppered with poetry\, acoustic music\, or personal tall tales. \n\n\nA Living Art: Unlike a recorded podcast\, these stories change based on the energy of the room. It’s interactive\, raw\, and deeply human. \n\n\nThe Details\n\n\nWhen: Every Tuesday night. \n\n\nTime: Usually kicks off at 7:00 PM. \n\n\nLocation: International Storytelling Center\, Jonesborough\, TN. \n\n\nCost: Generally\, a small donation is suggested at the door to support the Guild’s mission. \n\n\n\n\nPro Tip: Jonesborough takes its storytelling seriously\, but the Guild keeps it accessible. Whether you’re a local or just passing through\, it’s one of the most “authentic” Appalachian experiences you can find without needing to hike a trail.
