SUMMARY:Black Cultural Spaces: Holding on\, Loss & New Use
DESCRIPTION:Black in Appalachia Online Discussion June 11: Black Cultural Spaces: Holding on\, Loss & New Use \nJoin the McKinney Center in hosting William Isom II of the Black in Appalachia project\, for a discussion on loss\, preservation and reuse of Black cultural infrastructure in the region. From schools and churches to clubs and business spaces\, William will share what he’s seen across the broad scope of our landscape. William Isom II is an East Tennessee native & the director of Black in Appalachia. He coordinates the project’s research\, community data base development\, documentary film & photography production\, oral history collection and educational events with residents. This discussion will be hosted on an online Zoom meeting beginning at 7 p.m. on June 11th and is free and open to the public. \n\nThe McKinney Center at the Booker T. Washington School\, originally just known as the Booker T. Washington School\, was completed in 1939\, and was the first Works Progress Administration (WPA) built building in Washington County.  The school opened its doors for Black school age children from grades 1 through 8 in 1940 and served in this capacity until integration in 1965. This building was the primary education facility for hundreds of African-American students in the community. Around 2010\, the Town of Jonesborough purchased the building and restored it to create the arts and community center the building still serves as\, now. In November 2013\, the building officially opened as the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School\, named in honor of not only Ernest L. McKinney\, a past principal of the school\, but his entire family\, who did so much to serve the people of Jonesborough. \n\nToday the McKinney Center serves the region through art classes\, workshops\, art exhibits\, community events\, as a rental facility and much more. Other than during times of pandemic\, you can walk our hallways and see a very similar layout to the original Booker T. Washington School as well as a new addition of panels regarding the building and the McKinney family. The McKinney Center is not the only facility in the region with this same legacy and we hope to discuss these other locations during our time with William. Join us online at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, June 11 at the provided link with meeting ID and password. See you there! \n\nFind out more about Black in Appalachia and all they do at: https://www.blackinappalachia.org/

SUMMARY:Pollinator Week
DESCRIPTION:Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park plants pollinator garden in celebration of \nNational Pollinator Week – June 22 – 28\, 2020 \n  \nRecently\, on a cool morning in Elizabethton\, the staff of Sycamore Shoals came together to broadcast the seed of native wildflowers and grasses over a ½ acre of land at Sabine Hill State Historic Site. Considering the historic nature of the site\, everyone arrived in historic attire to accomplish the task at hand!  With National Pollinator Week quickly approaching on June 22nd\, this was the perfect time to get the seed in the ground and begin our work in creating new habitat for pollinators in Tennessee. \n\nThe funding for the project was provided through a partnership between the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Pollinator Habitat Program\, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation\, and the Tennessee State Park’s Honey Project\, with a goal to promote pollinator and environmental health in parks and across the state.  Along with this goal are opportunities for interpretive programming that will teach about the importance of pollinators\, the need to protect habitat\, types of pollinators\, and what we can all do to protect these many species. \n\nWe often think of colonial honeybees as being pollinators\, but there are many more.  In Tennessee there are approximately 400 species of solitary bees that do not live in colonies.  They are tiny and can nest underground or in hollow stems.  In addition to bees; birds\, butterflies\, bats\, and beetles all do their part in pollinating our native plants.  In turn\, these beautiful meadows provide shelter\, egg nurseries\, food\, and rest for pollinators. \nSabine Hill State Historic Site\, managed by the Tennessee Historical Commission and Tennessee State Parks\, will be open for tours this summer each Wednesday through Sunday.  You can search for a date and register for a tour by visiting www.tnstateparks.com/parks/sycamore-shoals \n\nPlease also visit Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park’s Butterfly Garden near Patriot’s Path walking trail by the Watauga River.  Cared for by the East Tennessee Master Gardeners\, this site is also a North American Butterfly Association Monarch Waystation.   Within easy access of the parking area in front of the Visitors Center\, you will find a Tennessee Urban Forestry certified Arboretum with a wide variety of signed\, native trees.

SUMMARY:Paramount Bristol: Leo Kottke
DESCRIPTION:PARAMOUNT BRISTOL PRESENTS\nAN EVENING WITH\nLEO KOTTKE\n \nAfter recording more than 40 albums over four decades\, Kottke is known across the nation for his impressive body of work and a simply stunning fingerpicking style that has won him two Grammy nominations. His sound draws inspiration from folk\, blues and jazz. His unique performances showcase his virtuosic playing as well as his quirky humor. The inventor of such titles as “When Shrimps Learn to Whistle” and “Burnt Lips\,” Kottke is known for his self-deprecating\, loopy sense of humor and quirky\, yet brilliant\, stage presence. Rolling Stone described him as “so good that he didn’t need a band.”\nLyle Lovett\, who toured with Kottke in 1989\, may have summed up Kottke best when he told Billboard magazine in 1989 “playing acoustic guitar on stage with Leo Kottke is like pitching to Darryl Strawberry.”\nWATCH the young guitar virtuoso\nLISTEN to a playlist

SUMMARY:Radio Bristol Book Club: Halfway to the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to WBCM Radio Bristol as our Book Club explores Halfway to the Sky by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley.\n\nReaders from Birthplace of Country Music Museum and the Bristol Public Library are coming together to explore books inspired by our region with this monthly program that airs on WBCM Radio Bristol.\n\nHosted by Bristol Public Library Executive Director Tonia Kestner and Birthplace of Country Music Museum Head Curator Dr. René Rodgers\, the Radio Bristol Book Club airs weekly every 4th Thursday.\nBook discussions will dig deep into the feelings and questions raised by each selection\, learn more about the authors\, and celebrate the joys of being a bookworm!\n\nListeners may tune in to Radio Bristol at 100.1 FM in the Bristol area\, online at ListenRadioBristol.org\, or download the free Radio Bristol mobile app.\n\nAbout Halfway to the Sky:\nTwelve-year-old Dani is running away from home\, or what’s left of home anyway. Her older brother\, who had muscular dystrophy\, died a few months ago. Then her father left and her parents got divorced. Now home is just Dani and her sad\, silent mother\, and Dani’s got to get away. She plans to do something amazing\, and go where her parents will never find her: she’s going to hike the whole Appalachian Trail\, from Georgia to Maine. The trail is a legend in her family\, the place where her parents met\, fell in love\, and got married 14 years before.\nUnfortunately for her master plan\, her mother doesn’t have much trouble figuring out where Dani’s gone. Now it’s the two of them\, hiking for as long as Dani can manage to persuade her mother to keep going. But Dani’s got an even longer emotional journey to make—and it’s one she and her mom need to make together.

Johnson\, who was the black transgender woman that threw the first brick at Stonewall in the very early hours of June 28th\, 1969; in response to yet another act of police brutality. We wish to use this platform to raise up the voices of BIPOC in both our local community and the greater LGBTQ+ community.\n\nOn June 27th\, we will be lining up at 5:00pm at the Pavilion at Founder’s Park. We will depart at 5:30pm and make our way through downtown\, continue on to University and E Market St.\, then drive down N Roan and State of Franklin\, heading back towards the Pavilion. The route will take about an hour.\n\n\nParticipants are highly encouraged to decorate their vehicles with flags\, signs\, banners\, etc.\nWe will also have a “Pride Playlist” everyone can tune into during the caravan.\n\nWe ask that participants follow all traffic laws\, as well as keep their hazard lights on while driving in the caravan. If you can’t join us\, fly a flag from your house\, wave or honk as we pass by\, and be sure to celebrate Pride in your own way!\n\nFor more information\, you can visit the co-host’s Facebook pages\, message any of the organizations hosting\, or contact Kavita MacDonald-Strong at Kavita.strong@aidshealth.org or at 317-793-5343 \nSee Less\n\n
