SUMMARY:Map Reading & Compass Class
DESCRIPTION:Do your adventures take you to remote areas where all you have is your own wits and training to rely on? Or do you prefer to keep your adventures closer to home by heading to your favorite local trail? In either case wilderness navigation skills will greatly enrich your experience by giving you the confidence to successfully head into the backcountry and return home safely. Join former Army Infantry officer Scott Fisher learning the dying art of how to read a topo map and use a compass to successfully navigate in the wild. The first part of this comprehensive and fun hands-on class will be spent in a classroom setting reviewing the features of a map and compass before progressing to terrain association\, navigational techniques and route selection. After completing the classroom portion we will move outside to apply your new skills during a mild to moderate hike in one of Northeast Tennessee’s beautiful outdoor areas. Maps and compasses provided. No experience necessary. Ages 12+. \nMap & Compass feedback: “Thoroughly enjoyed your Map Reading/Land Navigation class; great content & dynamic presentation style! Masterful in fitting prolific content to the relative needs of students!” – John B.\nhttps://bookeo.com/nolilearn?devent=415686RXARW16EF50506FE_2020-08-29_YqadaY760gF4

SUMMARY:International Storytelling Center’s Freedom Stories “What You Don’t Know (But Should) About Appalachian Slavery"
DESCRIPTION:International Storytelling Center to Host Virtual Freedom Stories Event  \n     \n(Jonesborough\, Tenn.) – The International Storytelling Center (ISC)\, home to the world-renowned National Storytelling Festival and Storytelling Live! Teller-in-Residence series\, will host a free virtual event titled What You Don’t Know (But Should) About Appalachian Slavery on Saturday\, September 5th\, from 1-2:30 pm as part of the Freedom Stories project. \n  \nFreedom Stories is an ongoing series that illuminates the underappreciated and neglected stories of African Americans in Appalachian history and highlights the role that face-to-face storytelling has played in both African and Appalachian cultures. Through Freedom Stories virtual events\, the project marries performance and discussion\, connecting prominent African American storytellers\, artists\, humanities scholars\, and community experts to trace the rich history of African Americans in Appalachia—from the first African arrivals in Appalachia\, to the shaping of a distinct culture\, to the struggles for freedom and equality. The project will also produce multi-media resources that will be made accessible to a national audience. \n\nAs the nation learns to grapple with difficult truths\, this free public event will serve as a model for how to engage in productive discussions around complex topics. The distinguished panel will feature Frank X. Walker\, a self-identified “Affrilachian” poet and author; author and historian\, Anne Mason\, Executive Director of the Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee & Southwest Virginia; West Virginia storyteller and humanities scholar\, Ilene Evans of Voices from the Earth; and Dr. Dinah Mayo-Bobee from East Tennessee State University Department of History. The panel will be moderated by ISC Freedom Stories Project Director\, Dr. Alicestyne Turley. \n\nThe live panel discussion will take place on September 5th\, from 1-2:30 pm EST on the International Storytelling Center’s Facebook timeline and will be followed by a public Q & A. The event will be recorded and made available to watch with closed-captioning post-event. \n\nAlicestyne Turley\, Director of the Freedom Stories Project states of the September Freedom Story\, “Today’s audiences have very limited\, generalized knowledge of American slavery\, a knowledge informed primarily by American entertainment media. Which of course means many audiences have even less information about Appalachia or its history of slavery. Slavery in Appalachia was like the region itself\, unique in its form and application. The September public discussion will be a brief look at this overlooked aspect of American and regional history.” \n\nKiran Singh Sirah\, President of ISC\, says these Freedom Stories discussions are important to the region in the context of the national movement of storytelling. “For example\, how many of us know that in Appalachia\, more people identify as African American than Scots-Irish?” asks Sirah. “The project is not meant to neglect or subdue the stories we do know\, but rather to bring forward\, in public conversation\, the untold stories that contribute to the uniqueness and rich traditions of Appalachia. These stories are integral to the history of the region\, and Appalachia (while often othered) is integral to the story of our entire nation.” \n\nThe project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Discussions Grant\, an award based on projects that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for general audiences. ISC would like to thank the following organizations for their support of the Freedom Stories Project: National Association of Black Storytellers (NABS)\, Appalachian African American Cultural Center\, Black in Appalachia\, Black/White Dialogue\, Green McAdoo Cultural Center\, Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee & Southwest Virginia\, Langston Centre\, Leadership and Civic Engagement at East Tennessee State University\, McKinney Center\, Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association\, and the Town of Jonesborough. \n\nTo learn more about the International Storytelling Center and upcoming Freedom Stories programming\, please visit www.storytellingcenter.net.

SUMMARY:MOONLITE DRIVE-IN THEATRE Disney's Mary Poppins
DESCRIPTION:Based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time and the Broadway musical that played for over 2\,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Awards nominations\, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins is capturing hearts in a whole new way: as a practically perfect Broadway musical at the Moonlite Drive-In! \nThe jack-of-all trades\, Bert\, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense\, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures\, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” \nDisney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

Grayson. This film tells the long overdue story of the blind mountain fiddler G.B. Grayson\, whose short career produced The Ballad of Tom Dooley\, Train 45\, Handsome Molly\, and about 40 other songs that became the standards of Bluegrass and early country music. The film was created by Appalachian Memory Keepers in partnership with Johnson County Center for the Arts and funded by Tennessee Arts Commission. \nOn Saturday\, September 5th\, the Musical Heritage Homecoming Tour goes live at 11:30. First\, you can watch the unveiling of A Day in the Life of a Song\, the newest addition to downtown Mountain City’s Musical Heritage Mural Mile. Artists Cristy Dunn\, Temple Reece\, and Lewis Chapman created scenes that celebrate music as a part of everyday life\, from singing while making biscuits to ‘Lassy Making and Sawmillin’ and ending with a family gathered around an old fashioned radio listening to The Grand Ole Opry. \nThe Kody Norris Show will entertain with the songs of G.B. Grayson at noon\, and then two more virtual sites will celebrate the music of Clarence “Tom” Ashley\, Clint Howard and Fred Price with video segments ‘Sawmillin and ‘Lassy Makin’ and My Home in the Mountains. \nAfterwards\, viewers are invited to go for a guided tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile. This virtual tour through beautiful downtown Mountain City will give you an in-depth look into the inspiration behind the musical heritage murals. \nFinally\, acclaimed Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb will join us for an online talk and share her insight into ballads and murders in Johnson County. Wherever you are this year\, you can tune in and share in the sites and sounds that make Johnson County such a special place at www.longjourneyhome.net. \n  \n“It’s about as real as it gets. If you were wondering whether authentic Appalachia still exists\, look no further.” -Evelyn Cook \nFor more information\, please contact Cristy Dunn at 423-957-6346 or Evelyn Cook at 423-727-8700 \ncdunnoriginals@hotmail.com \nor go to www.longjourneyhome.net

SUMMARY:Andrew Scotchie at Usa Raft
DESCRIPTION:With two full length releases under his belt\, a festival all his own\, and his band’s 10 year anniversary approaching\, it’s hard to believe that songwriter\, guitar prodigy\, and event producer Andrew Scotchie hasn’t even hit 30. On his latest studio venture\, the Asheville\, NC native packs a punch with six new tracks that boast some of the most electrifying arrangements you’ll hear all year. \nOn the heels of his 2018 LP release “Family Dynamo\,” Scotchie is set to unveil his most mature and sonically diverse collection entitled “Everyone Everywhere” on Friday\, June 26. With heavy themes like corporate greed and inequality prominently featured in the condemnatory track “Funny Money\,” more playful tunes like the sweet retro-rock inspired “Natural Romantic” offer listeners a much needed respite from thinking about these turbulent times. An anthem in its own rite\, leading single “Stepping Stone” sets the stage for a short yet pungent magical mystery ride of psychedelia\, funk\, and jam-adjacent rock that is nothing short of enrapturing. The standout “Fear Mongers\,” starts with a hardy sample of Charlie Chaplin’s famed “The Great Dictator” speech (which required official approval from the late filmmaker’s rights-holding office in Paris)\, declaring that “the misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed” and segues perfectly with Scotchie’s “don’t wait / don’t hesitate / ‘cause the poor man can’t give what the rich man always takes\,” artfully encapsulating the current climate. \nWith such timely social commentary embedded into every track\, the new EP could easily be mistaken for a response to the ongoing pandemic\, though the album was actually recorded months prior. Still\, Scotchie welcomes the serendipity\, and encourages his listeners to adopt their own takes on the lyrics\, especially when they can be utilized to reclaim hope. Scotchie concludes the album with a universal offering in the title track “Everyone Everywhere\,” imploring “Even if you feel lonely / when this world is unkind / call on me\, I’m sure you’ll find / even when you feel you got nothing / everyone everywhere’s got something. \nThis is a socially distanced event. Policies will be enforced to enhance safety of all participants\, staff and performers.
