Washington opened its doors for African-American school age children from grades 1 through 8 in 1940 and served in this capacity until integration in 1965. This building was the primary education facility for hundreds of African-American students in the community. The faculty and principles that served here left an educational legacy that continues today. Beginning in 2010\, the town purchased the building and began restoring it into a place that would bring people together through the arts. Renovations lasted for several years. In November 2013\, the building officially opened as the McKinney Center at Booker T. Washington School\, named in honor of not only Ernest L. McKinney but his entire family\, who did so much to serve the people of Jonesborough. \n\nFive years ago\, Booker T. Washington Alumni met to celebrate the 75th Anniversary with a dinner\, music\, and certificate ceremony. To remain safe\, due to COVID-19\, the McKinney Center has decided to honor the 80th Anniversary by sharing images and stories from Alumni. The stories and voices you will hear in this video include Sandy Johnson\, Debbie Johnson\, and Nola Rollins Parks. These interviews come from the Spring of 2014\, shortly after the McKinney Center opened\, and invited alumni to “come back to school” and tell their stories\, which were collected by Jules Corriere and Pam Daniels. The McKinney Center is grateful that these alumni have shared their memories of Booker T. Washington School with our staff. We hope to preserve these full audio files so that generations to come will be able to hear about Black history in Jonesborough. \n\nHappy 80th Anniversary to Booker T. Washington School and thank you to all of the alumni\, staff\, educators\, and families that gathered and learned here. We are thankful for this place and will always do our best to honor that legacy. Find their YouTube page by searching McKinney Center.

SUMMARY:Shady Valley Cranberry Festival
DESCRIPTION:This year has been different than we all anticipated. Because of the Covid-19 virus\, the Shady Valley Cranberry Festival Committee has decided to make some changes to our usual festival. Due to the encouragement of social distancing\, we will not be able to have some of the things we have had in the past. We want to continue with this year’s festival to help keep the sense of community alive\, while also\, keeping our community safe. \nWe have decided to forgo our normal Friday night festivities. This will include our Bean Supper we have to raise money for the Olan Bentley Memorial Scholarship and our annual auction we have had to raise money for the school. Prior to Covid-19\, we felt it was still important to continue with the auction to raise money for the upkeep of the school building. We plan to use the building to hold community events\, help kids with school studies\, and other things to keep the community together. We also plan continue to help with the education of the children in the Valley\, which was what the Festival was created for! However\, because our auction does draw a large crowd (which we are always thankful for)\, we thought it would be best to hold off this year since there was no way to distance people in our gym. Other options were considered\, but this\, we thought\, was the best one. We will try to hold an auction at our Soup Supper in March (which the proceeds also go to the Olan Bentley Memorial Scholarship). Maybe\, by then\, we will be able to hold large gatherings again. \nThe main event on Saturday will still take place. Unfortunately\, the Shady Valley Fire Department will not be having their annual pancake breakfast. However\, the Shady Valley Preservation Society will be serving biscuits and gravy with sausage to all those interested. We will not have the parade\, to help encourage distancing. This will keep people from gathering in large groups to watch the parade. Because of that\, we will be beginning our festival an hour early (10am) and possibly go longer with it if the crowd persists. I’m sure our vendors will love the extra attention. We have also decided to not have the inflatables this year because of the difficulty of sanitizing between the kids playing in them. We are looking into other possibilities for the kids to do during our festival. We want them to be included too! We will still have live music\, along with craft and food vendors set up outside\, as well as in the building. We are also looking into options to spread our vendors out from each other to also encourage distancing. We are asking that any vendors that have sides to their tents\, to bring them to help section off from other vendors (thinking at least two sides). We will encourage masks to be worn and encourage social distancing guidelines. We want this festival to be a great one\, while keeping everyone safe. \n2020 has certainly been a unique year for all of us. We hope next year we will be able to have the biggest and best Cranberry Festival yet! If anyone would like to make a donation\, you can do that by sending it to either the Shady Valley Cranberry Festival or the Olan Bentley Memorial Scholarship at 423 Highway 133 Shady Valley\, TN 37688. If anyone has any questions at all\, feel free to contact us on Facebook at Shady Valley Cranberry Festival\, by email at cranberryfestival99@gmail.com\, or at the building at 423-739-2422.

SUMMARY:Halloween Drive-In Movie and Costume Contest in Unicoi October 10
DESCRIPTION:Town of Unicoi To Host Free Halloween Drive-In Movie and Costume Contest October 10 \n  \nUnicoi\, Tenn. —  The Town of Unicoi will host a free Halloween drive-in movie at its Tourist Information Center Saturday\, October 10\, at 7:30 p.m. at 106 Unicoi Village Place. Sound will be played through FM radio\, a costume contest will be held at 7 p.m. and concessions will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m. \n“The last drive-in was a big hit with our residents\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “People are desperate for events right now and this is one that can be done safely.” \nLike the September event\, the Clinchfield Caboose will support the screen with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot\, and the feature will be a family-friendly Halloween movie. But one big change from the last movie is the addition of Ambrosound\, a local professional audio\, video\, lighting and staging company. \n“We’re excited to partner with Ambrosound for a more professional movie experience this time\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “Todd and his team do a great job at our festivals and I’m so glad we won’t have to worry about equipment reliability … they’ll handle all that.” \nAnother difference from September will be the addition of a Halloween Costume Contest to celebrate the season. There will be categories  for both children and adults  and winners will receive passes to Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium. The contest begins at 7 p.m. and all participants must wear masks. Only contestants are allowed up front for judging while all guests are asked to remain in their vehicles and “honk” for their favorite costumes. The contest will be livestreamed on the town’s Facebook page so guests in the back may have a “virtual front-row view.” \n“We can’t wait to see all the cute and spooky costumes\,” said Shelton. “And we hope the adults get creative too! These movie events are all about family fun.” \nConcessions will open at 6:30 p.m.\, and this time hot dogs have been added to the list. Little Caesars Pizza for $1 per slice or $6 for a whole pie will also be available. The Buffalo Pavilion will house the concession stand and food-handling precautions will be taken\, including masks and gloves and one person to handle money while another handles food in an effort to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 exposure. \nThe movie will start at dark and guests are asked to remain in their vehicles except for restrooms and concessions\, and only one person from each car is allowed in the concession line.  Masks are required if out of the vehicle and guests are asked to please practice socially distancing. An event map may be viewed on the town’s website in addition to the announcement of which movie will be showing. \nSpecial thanks to drive-in movie sponsors Single Dad Homesteading\, Jones and Church Farms\, Unicoi Walmart\, Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium\, The Erwin Record\, Unicoi Dollar General and Quick Stop Market in Erwin for their generosity and support of local community events. \nFor more information or movie title\, visit the Town of Unicoi’s Facebook page at facebook.com/townofunicoitn. Information is also available on the town’s website at UnicoiTN.net.
