DESCRIPTION:The Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University announces a summer exhibition entitled From an African American Perspective (June 15 – August 14\, 2015). The exhibition of 76 works was curated by the late Sammie L. Nicely and features works from his collection\, the collection of Jan and Sylvia Peters\, and the collection of Dr. Jerome W. Wright.\nThe Reece Museum and Nicely\, agreed to curate a summer 2015 Reece Museum exhibit entitled From an African American Perspective. A softbound 32-page catalogue accompanies the exhibition. That catalogue includes an essay by Los Angeles collector\, Dr. Barbara Lang\, as well as essays by the three collection contributors to the exhibition: Nicely\, Peters\, and Wright. The exhibition draws on both African and African American works\, and includes paintings\, sculptures and statuary\, blown and stained glass\, enamels\, basketry\, dolls\, photographs\, pottery\, masks\, and furniture.\nQuite unexpectedly Nicely became ill. After a brief stay at the Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System\, he passed\, or using the term he preferred\, “transitioned\,” on Saturday\, May 23\, 2015. Nicely leaves behind a legacy of love for life and art.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Victory from Within: The American Prisoner of War Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University is a host site beginning July 13 through September 17\, 2015\, entitled Victory from Within: The American Prisoner of War Experience\, a national traveling exhibition developed with partners of the Andersonville National Historic Site in Georgia.\nThe 1\,200 square foot exhibit\, based thematically on the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville\, is designed to educate the public about the stories and sacrifices of American POWs. The four main sections of the exhibit – Capture\, Prison Life\, Those Who Wait\, and Freedom – contain artifacts as well as interactive elements such as audio-visual interviews with prisoners of war. Visitors will be able to explore the POW experience throughout the entire history of American military conflict\, from the Civil War to modern conflicts. In addition to the exhibit\, the National Park Service has developed a curriculum for students based on the exhibit in an effort to further bring the stories of prisoners of war to the community.\nA special program will be held on Monday\, September 14\, to recognize and honor POW/MIAs from the region. That September 14th ceremony will be held in the D.P. Culp University Center’s auditorium after which attendees will visit the exhibition in the museum.
