SUMMARY:Crossroads: Change in Rural America Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit Coming to Morristown \nThe Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street\, in cooperation with Humanities Tennessee\, presents “Crossroads: Change in Rural America.” The exhibition examining the evolving landscape and culture of rural America opens at Rose Center on Saturday\, November 2. “Crossroads” will be on view through December 7. \nRose Center and the surrounding community has been expressly chosen by Humanities Tennessee to host “Crossroads” as part of the Museum on Main Street program – a national/state/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations. The exhibition will tour only six communities in Tennessee from September 7\, 2019 through June 21\, 2020. \n“Crossroads” explores how rural American communities changed in the 20th century. From sea to shining sea\, the vast majority of the United States landscape remains rural with only 3.5% of the landmass considered urban. Since 1900\, the percentage of Americans living in rural areas dropped from 605 to 17%. The exhibition looks at that remarkable societal change and how rural Americans responded. Americans have relied on rural crossroads for generations. These places where people gather to exchange goods\, services and culture and to engage in political and community discussions are an important part of our cultural fabric. Despite the massive economic and demographic impacts brought on by these changes\, America’s small towns continue to creatively focus on new opportunities for growth and development. \n“’Crossroads’ allows us to reflect on Morristown’s history\, present\, and future and we are excited to explore what the future may hold for our community\,” said Beccy Hamm\, Rose Center’s Executive Director. “We want to convene conversations about what makes our community unique and are developing local exhibitions and public programs to complement the Smithsonian exhibition.” \nDesigned for small-town museums\, libraries and cultural organizations\, “Crossroads” will serve as a community meeting place for conversations about how rural America has changed. With the support and guidance of state humanities councils\, these towns will develop complementary exhibits\, host public programs and facilitate educational initiatives to raise people’s understanding about their own history\, the joys and challenges of living rural\, how change has impacted their community\, and prompt discussion of goals for the future. \nThe exhibition is part of Museum on Main Street\, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES)\, state humanities councils across the nation\, and local host institutions. The learn more about “Crossroads” and other Museum on Main Street exhibitions\, visit www.museumonmainstreet.org. \nSupport for MoMS has been provided by the U. S. Congress. \nSITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington\, D. C.\, for more than 65 years. SITES connect Americans to their shared cultural heritage through a wide range of exhibitions about art\, science and history\, which are shown wherever people live\, work\, and play. For exhibition description and tour schedules\, visit www.sites.si.edu. \n### \nRose Center\, 442 W. 2nd North St\, Morristown\, TN 37814. 423-581-4330. SUMMARY:Abingdon: Barter Theatre Presents: Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol \nA Ghostly Christmas Story by Tom Mula “Marley was dead to begin with. That must be clearly understood or nothing wonderful can come of this story.” Finally we get to hear the tale of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol told from Marley’s perspective\, which is wonderful indeed. Desperate and locked in a torment of his own creation\, Marley gets one chance for redemption. He must redeem his former partner\, Ebenezer Scrooge. This begins a journey of laughter and terror\, redemption and renewal\, during which Scrooge’s heart is certainly opened\, but not before Marley – in his irreverent\, funny and deeply moving story – discovers his own. SUMMARY:Abingdon: Barter Theatre Presents: The Santaland Diaries
DESCRIPTION:The Santaland Diaries \n*Recommended for mature audience due to language and subject matter This outrageous holiday comedy stars Crumpet\, a rebel without a Claus\, who recounts his true-life tale of being an out-of-work writer doing a stint as a Macy’s department store elf. His encounters\, as an Elf during the season of forced joy\, have become a delightful cult classic for those in need of a holly-jolly antidote! A delightfully absurd look at the commercial Christmas season\, Sedaris’ sharp and hilarious observations have rapidly become one of the nation’s most popular holiday \nshows. Barter’s production will feature one of Barter’s favorite actors\, Nick Piper\, as Crumpet. In Repertory with Wooden Snowflakes NOVEMBER 26 — DECEMBER 29

SUMMARY:Rocky Mount State Historic Site: Candlelight Christmas
DESCRIPTION:“Rocky Mount Celebrates the Holidays with Candlelight Christmas” \n  \nCome experience an old-fashioned Christmas at Rocky Mount’s annual “Candlelight Christmas” event\, taking place the evenings of December 6th & 7th\, and 13th & 14th. \n  \nRocky Mount State Historic Site’s “Candlelight Christmas” tours are a chance to look back at a simpler time\, in which guests will travel back to Christmas Eve of 1791 when the Cobb family home is adorned with handmade decorations of greenery and lit by candles. Meet the Cobb family\, Governor Blount and his family\, and many of the Cobb family’s friends and neighbors. Listen to the stories of firing the anvil\, the kissing ball\, poor man’s punch\, and more. Watch the dances of the time and even be invited to join in. Tap your toes and clap your hands to the traditional music being played. Smell the apple fritters frying in the kitchen\, the pies waiting to be eaten in the dining room\, and the smoke of the bonfire. At the end of the tour\, warm up in our reception area with coffee\, hot chocolate\, and other goodies.  \n  \n“Candlelight Christmas” is a new way to experience an old favorite. This tour is completely different from Rocky Mount’s daily tours and captures a different side of life in 1791. Start a new tradition this year\, or keep your tradition going\, by attending our “Candlelight Christmas” tour. \n  \nCandlelight Christmas tours will begin at 4:30 p.m. on December 6th\, 7th\, 13th\, and 14th\, and will continue every fifteen minutes until 8:00 p.m. There will be some brief time spent outside\, so visitors should be sure to dress for the weather. Walk-ins are welcome\, but it is STRONGLY recommended that you call ahead to reserve your time\, as this is a very popular event. Admission is $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for children. Rocky Mount also offers discounted rates for groups of twelve or more (reservations are required to receive group rate) and discounts for Rocky Mount Historical Association members. \n  \nRocky Mount State Historic Site is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday\, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from the first Tuesday in March through the second Saturday in December. For more information\, call (423) 538-7396 or visit our website (www.rockymountmuseum.com). \n  \nRocky Mount is located at 200 Hyder Hill Road\, Piney Flats – just off Highway 11-E\, midway between Johnson City and Piney Flats. \n
