SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Damascus Appalachian Trail Center Ground Breaking
DESCRIPTION:DAMASCUS APPALACHIAN TRAIL CENTER SET TO BREAK GROUND\,\nCONTINUES GROWTH OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA’S OUTDOOR RECREATION ECONOMY \n \nABINGDON\, VA – A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Appalachian Trail Center in Damascus\, VA will take place on February 4th at 11:00 AM. The groundbreaking will take place at the site of the new center on Laurel Avenue across the street from Town Hall. \nThe million dollar center is a joint project of the Town of Damascus\, Friends of Southwest Virginia and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The project was funded through an Appalachian Regional Commission’s POWER 2016 grant for coal-impacted communities\, a Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission grant for economic development\, and general funds from the Town of Damascus. \nConstruction of this Appalachian Trail Center will provide visitors with direction and ideas for the many recreational activities and hospitality offerings available throughout Southwest Virginia\, not only the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has committed to providing programming and staff for the Center once constructed. \n“The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is deeply committed to our partnership with Damascus and we look forward to providing visitors with information about the A.T.\, its history and culture\, and other recreation assets throughout Southwest Virginia\,” said Andrew Downs\, Senior Regional Director – South for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. \nDamascus\, or Trail Town USA\, is situated where seven nationally-known trails intersect. The hills and peaks of the Appalachian Mountains call residents and tourists to this authentic small town in Southwest Virginia. \n“Most people don’t realize they are standing on the Appalachian Trail when they stand on Laurel Avenue in downtown Damascus\,” said Gavin Blevins\, Damascus town manager. “This new center will be the town’s opportunity to educate locals and visitors alike on the hundreds of recreational opportunities within minutes of Damascus.” \nFriends of Southwest Virginia’s SWVA Outdoors initiative started in 2012 with the goal of developing the outdoor recreation industry cluster in Southwest Virginia (SWVA) in order to reap the economic benefits of the many natural assets in our region. The first phase of this initiative supported the development of stakeholders groups in eight anchor recreation areas throughout SWVA: the Appalachian Trail\, Blue Ridge Plateau\, Breaks\, Clinch River\, Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail\, High Knob\, Mount Rogers\, and New River. Cultural and natural asset development and access in communities and surrounding environs will be incorporated in ongoing capital improvement and planning. \n“The Damascus Trail Center is one of multiple projects underway in Southwest Virginia to diversify the economy and transform our natural and cultural assets such as the legendary Appalachian Trail into world class destinations\,” said Chris Cannon\, executive director of Friends of Southwest Virginia. “We may not always realize how special this place is\, but the world loves learning our story and then visiting us.” \nDamascus received both a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) funding to work on downtown revitalization and enhancing outdoor assets within the town. A part of the master plan for downtown Damascus is the construction of a destination center as a focal point for visitors. \nFunding partners include the Appalachian Regional Commission\, Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission\, Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development\, and Friends of Southwest Virginia. A further partnership that includes the Appalachian Trail Conservancy\, the Mount Rogers Appalachian Trail Club\, the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission\, the Town of Damascus\, and Friends of Southwest Virginia ensures that this project will be successful and sustainable beyond this single grant to build the Trail Center. \n### \nContact:\nFor more information\, please contact Jenna Wagner with Friends of Southwest Virginia (276-492-2400). For more information and to stay up-to-date\, subscribe to the Friends of Southwest Virginia Partner Newsletter and “Like” Friends of Southwest Virginia on Facebook. \nAbout Southwest Virginia:\nTucked in the mountains of Southwest Virginia is a vibrant culture of music\, craft and stunning natural beauty. It’s a region of spectacular views and rich natural resources. Time spent in the region adds up to something much more than a simple getaway. A different side of Virginia. And a great place to visit for a week’s vacation – or to make a home for a lifetime. Authentic. Distinctive. Alive. \nAbout the Southwest Virginia Cultural Heritage Foundation and Friends of Southwest Virginia:\nThe Southwest Virginia Cultural Heritage Foundation is the coordinating body for cultural heritage tourism and economic development efforts fostering Southwest Virginia’s creative economy. Through a supporting non-profit\, the Friends of Southwest Virginia\, the combined entities help localities\, businesses\, individuals\, artists\, nonprofits and entrepreneurs mobilize and succeed. \nA multifaceted plan identifies the cultural and natural assets of the region; coordinates initiatives\, organizations and venues engaged in cultural and natural heritage toward more efficient operations for all partner organizations; and develops a comprehensive strategy and capital improvements plan to maximize the impact of state investments in this significant restructuring effort. \nKey initiatives include: \n\nBranding and marketing Southwest Virginia to the world as a distinct culture and destination\nDeveloping and sustaining the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace\nExpanding outdoor recreation development initiatives and marketing throughout the region\nPlanning and implementation of downtown revitalization throughout the region to instill a high quality of life within our communities and promote them to the world for a broad spectrum of economic development opportunities

SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Society: Wythe County History
DESCRIPTION:Wythe County history is topic of BHA meeting\n\nBristol Virginia – Wytheville native\, Michael Gillman\, will be the featured speaker before the Bristol Historical Association in February.  Gillman\, who is the Coordinator of Heritage Sites and Programs for the Town of Wytheville\, will present the program\, “Resolved to live or Die”\, Southwest Virginia in the Revolution.  The meeting will be held on Monday\, February 10\, 6:30pm\, at the Bristol Public Library.  The general public is invited to attend this free event. \n  \nWythe County’s history is very strategic to the history of Southwest Virginia.  The current location of Fort Chiswell is the site of a frontier fort built in 1758 as an outpost during the French and Indian War. The fort was of strategic importance during the American Revolution as the guard post over a deposit of lead used by the militia to mold bullets.  It was situated at the junction of the Great Trading Path and the Richmond Road\, near the New River. \n  \nWythe County was created after the American Revolution in 1789 and named for George Wythe\, the “father of American Jurisprudence” and signer of the Declaration of Independence. In May 1790\, 100 acres of land was donated to establish a town and county seat at Wytheville.  The fort fell into disrepair after the county seat and courthouse were moved from Fort Chiswell to its new location at Wytheville.  Gillman will discuss the history and importance of Fort Chiswell\, the lead mines and the Fincastle Resolutions. \n  \nMichael Gillman was born and raised in Wytheville. He is currently the Coordinator of Heritage Sites and Programs for the Town of Wytheville\, Department of Museums.  He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business-Project Management from Liberty University Online. He is an avid Southwest Virginia material culture and decorative arts collector. A member of the Fincastle/Montgomery County Militia of Southwest Virginia living history group\, he most recently was named as an advisor to an upcoming PBS series. \n  \nThe February 10th meeting is open to the public and held in conjunction with the library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”.  Contact Tim Buchanan\, Program Chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, by e-mail; buchanan03@bvu.net. Visit our Facebook page for details\, BRISTOL HISTORY. Judge Charles Flannagan was recently named as the new president of the Bristol Historical Association. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Abingdon Sessions at Barter Theatre: Jill Andrews
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 14th\n\n\n\n\n\nJill Andrews\n\n\nA native of East Tennessee\, Jill Andrews kicked off her songwriting career as co-founder of the everybodyfields\, a band whose mix of Southern genres – folk\, country\, bluegrass – and male-female vocals helped pave the way for future groups like The Civil Wars. It earned the everybodyfields a wide fan-base too\, as well as appearances at Bonnaroo\, The Kennedy Center\, and a cross-country tour with The Avett Brothers. After three albums\, Andrews left that band and launched a solo career\, starting with a self-titled EP and a full-length record\, The Mirror\, that built something bigger a broader on top of her Americana roots. She followed The Mirror with the acclaimed The War Inside featuring a duet with Seth Avett. \nWhile working on The War Inside\, Andrews signed a publishing deal and began landing songs in multiple TV shows and movies\, including Grey’s Anatomy\, The Good Wife\, Nashville\, American Idol\, Hart of Dixie\, and Me\, Him\, Her (2015)\, among others\, including the theme song to SyFy’s Wynonna Earp. One of her songs\, “Joy Parade\,” also appeared on The Music of Nashville: Season 2\, Volume 2\, a TV soundtrack that rose to number 13 on the Billboard 200. \nSince releasing The War Inside\, Andrews has remained busy touring and writing\, opening shows for acts such as The Avett Brothers\, Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors\, Sean Watkins\, and Mandolin Orange\, as well as headlining her own shows throughout the country. Collaborations with friends like Langhorne Slim and Peter Groenwald have led to the digital release of a handful of duet singles and the release of Hush Kids\, the eponymous and inaugural album by the band she founded with Groenwald. These songs feel present\, and they’re delivered the way Andrews always delivers them: with raw emotion that is as real to her as it is to the listener. \n\nMost recently\, she has wrapped up recording on what will be her next album\, singles from which are starting to be released and are available now. The album is due out in early 2020 and is the first effort co-produced by Andrews. It promises to be some of her most personal work to date. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 14th @ Barter Theatre \n \nFor Fans of: Josh Ritter\, The Milk Carton Kids\, Mandolin Orange\, John Cowan\, Vince Gill \n \nTickets: Start at $20 \nDoors Open: 7:15pm \nShow Starts: 8:00pm \nCo-Bill  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrooke & Darin Aldridge\n\n\nHusband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge draw on the traditions of their native North Carolina\, the savvy of a young\, gifted band and their own dedication to ingenuity to create the most adventurous album of their career with their latest critically acclaimed release\, Inner Journey. \n The duo has placed several tracks at the top of the charts on Roots\, SiriusXM\, Bluegrass and Gospel charts. They have received multiple nominations from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and Inspirational Country Music (ICM). Their music videos “Wildflower” and “Tennessee Flat Top Box” and most recently “Every Time You Leave” were heavily featured on outlets including CMT\, CMT Edge\, GAC\, Bluegrass Ridge TV and The Bluegrass Situation. TV appearances include PBS\, Great American Gospel\, The Bluegrass Road\, RFD-TV\, Blue Highways TV\, Songs of the Mountain\, Woodsongs\, Larry’s Country Diner and Music City Roots. \nBoth highly acclaimed vocalists in their own right (Brooke is the 3-time reigning IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year)\, Darin and Brooke combine rich harmonies with impeccable musicianship to create the unmistakable sound that has made them one of the hottest young acts in acoustic music and they’ve surrounded themselves with a band of equally amazing pickers. Darin spent 6 years as a member of the acclaimed County Gentleman and is a highly sought-after multi-instrumentalist. Brooke has been lauded for having one of the most powerful voices in music of any genre. Darin was named the IBMA’s Momentum Mentor of the Year in 2017 for his efforts at teaching and mentoring youth on guitar and mandolin and for giving unselfishly of his time and talents at public events at places like the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby\, NC \n \n\nThere’s a lot about the new generation of bluegrass that sure is inspiring. And Darin and Brooke are two of my favorites of this great new generation. I’m flattered that they included me in their new record and even better\, to find out they are equally as great as people”. \n~Vince Gill \n“Brooke asserts herself as one of the more powerful female vocalists on the scene…” \n~Relix Magazine \n“Husband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge have carved out one of the fastest rising careers on the acoustic music scene today.” \n~Billboard Magazine
